  • Interview with the 2018 New Ideas Contest finalist
Nikolay Sadilov, head of the technology team for Shop 6 and Shop 7 in Perm, was selected as a finalist for the New Ideas Contest in 2018. He had this to say about the competition:
    - Last year I entered the New Ideas Contest with an idea to automate data collection in Shop 6 using barcodes and a portable data terminal. The goal was to improve storekeeper efficiency. After scanning the barcode, data is transferred to the information system. This process automates what was previously done manually by filling all data out on paper. Having to use paper and pen took a lot of time, reduced our operational efficiency, and slowed down production.
According to initial estimates, the new automated data collection system will save around 1000 hours of work for the shopkeeper each year. Software development began in April. The system should be up and running in Shop 6 sometime in September or October.
Entering the competition and thinking through the automation process built my knowledge base considerably. Working with the IT department and programmers to build the system exposed me to additional experience I would not have otherwise had. And of course, receiving the monetary reward was very gratifying.
I am currently working on an experimental product assembly mandrel for Shop 7. If I can get it ready in time to build a prototype, I plan to participate in the New Ideas Contest again this year.
