TOO HOT FOR CREW, IT’S JUST US 2! - Atlantic Crossing Part 3 - Ep 171

- Join us as we continue sailing across the North Atlantic Ocean from Europe to the tropical Caribbean in our Bluewater capable Hunter 42 Passage. We're approaching Cape Verde in days 7-11 of our transatlantic. The days are getting longer and hotter and as the swell climbs, the winds die, making for some interesting downwind sailing conditions. Wing on wing sailing versus asymmetrical spinnaker sailing is put to the test while showing how we they boost morale when a long passage seems never ending.

Wow! Pancakes on a passage. That’s a nice treat. Enjoyed the episode…thanks for sharing.
Our pleasure!
Ahh the joy of sailing long distances, many hours of boredom combined with some minutes of shear terror.
I've been there for both!
Holy cow. I've been following your channel for over a year. How do you NOT have 100K+ subscribers by now?
thanks for sharing real life even if you think it might be boring, it's great to help me prepare for what may be in my future.
Next time you lose the fish, open the bale and let the line back out. Sometimes, the fish will attack your lure again. Great episode!
We were hoping for a second bite, it’s happened before!😆
Glad I have a "Live" subscription to the non-government optical satellite imagery, the eastern Atlantic sailing vessels are all crystal clear as there is an abundance of sunshine. Oh look....
LOVELY! I'm so jelly! What a great passage, this is what I want so bad! Smooth seas and light winds , what a dream! Thanks guys, you two are keeping me following my dream of sailing some day! :)
LOL....risque....now that cracked me up...
🤣
Hi from BC. going for a run through the the mountains in the snow. Love Scotland. Cheers
Enjoyed your video, a little cheeky all in fun. Take care & smooth sailing. Wow, two Atlantic crossings, you got to be proud???? Hopefully your folks will visit once you get to the Bahamas (or there abouts).
💙🇺🇸💚👍😇
Pretty nice passage so far. A little more wind would be good but be careful what you wish for! Those pancakes looked good! Food is indeed the highlite of each day. Sail on!
About the sourdough bread and it failing.....Take the time estimates in recipes just as rough guesstimates. Better to just look at the rise. The time changes quite a bit depending on the ambient temps (and also humidity). If it didn't rise enough last time, then just leave it longer.
That’s what I’ve come to realize, it’s so hard when we’re moving and the temperature varies on the regular! 😅
I bet! Even for me in a house that doesn't move, the difference between winter and summer is huge. Rise times in winter can be up to 50% longer vs summer. And it still takes me a few mediocre attempts to dial it in.
Always a nice video to watch
So Sunny , that remember me on Vacation on Kos island
Süper very nice video thank you so much
Groovy episode.
we love your videos, and yeh slow is not that good, but you got a beautiful boat, and lady for company, your not at the office 9 to 5, and your not stuck in a wheelchair every day like my wife, so c,mon folks smile and enjoy every day we have on this beautiful planet. Soon you will be in paradise.
Love your travels - your videos (and quality) are top notch!
Interesting that your ongoing dilemma with asym. Vs wing on wing. I have the same conversation with myself every time I fly it.
Yep 😅 ends up being a lot of dousing and hoisting
So,
you can go wing on wing with your Jib, you can do so with the main & spinnaker. If your pole won't reach the clew, you can put it on the sheet to wing it out to weather.
You can also (if your angle is deep enough & apparent wind is light) put your main on the windward side. It will accelerate wind into your kite, giving you increased apparent wind in the sail.
Very enjoyable video!
Great video guys. Enjoying your adventures especially from ON in February. Lol
Nice video
Putting the main up will help stabilize the boat.
Yep! but not when dead down wind and the winds aren’t strong enough for the swell size to keep us stable 🫠
@@SailingJibsea I’ve centered it and flattened the hell out of it. It can dampen the rolling.
The Pose lol
At the end? 🤣
Yup, absolutely@@SailingJibsea
Safe trip! 😀
You guys are fun. !!!!!!!!
Did you find out which boat was on the Horizon?
Hopefully you figured out how the spinnaker is chafing 😮
We sure hope so!
Could be a little sea sickness. I know sometimes I get super drowsy, not really sick though.
Great video …. Question … I don’t see you talk about navigation much …. What do you do as far as ship log, logging your position etc.? What’s your contingency plan when your electronics fail? Just curious
We have several devices that we log our position. We also have paper charts in the event every device were to fail
@@SailingJibsea be safe!!!!!!
Great video as always! How is your power consumption when cruising? Do you have ample power, or do you have to conserve at times? Thanks...
On passage we turn things off that don’t need to be on, prioritizing our autopilot and instruments. Trying to balance our boat as much as possible and only turning starlink twice a day for weather and brief communication. Especially when it’s a cloudy day
Is that a taffrail log you are dragging? Is it tied into the SOG/STW (ie Boat speed) display?
I laughed aloud with the somersaulting comment. Haha.
it’s just a line we put out for an emergency in case someone falls in there’s a small chance of something to try to catch onto
Jesus christ, Steph. That thumbnail. 😳
I need to get into shape. 😑
Let's play a game: How to have a successful sailing channel? Aaaand go!
Hi guys...how come you didn't stop in Cape Verde?
We didn’t have a need to
One knot = one nautical mile per hour
if it's warm enough you don't need any clothes no one is around, just don't get sun burned.
👍
Clearly you lift regularly. How do you manage to do that on a boat?
when i’m under way i only use hand lines .
Enjoy it while you are still young and beautiful ;-)
what do you use for internet?
Starlink
they say they like it that way. Then - Kirkland Signature Daily Facial Towelettes
Get some really long oars and a drum.
U guys have an OF fans?
Wrong cut of spin for dead downwind
We weren’t dead down. We always kept the wind on a broad
needless to say i would rather have seen the other crew member baring a little. ha ha sorry
Ahh come on Steph! How about pleasing instead of teasing?😻❤️
Not sure which is more boring, the sailing, or watching this video.
Not sure what’s more pointless, the comment or the rudeness.
No such thing as a knot per hour, it is like saying mile per hour per hour, a knot is a nautical mile per hour.
Knots per hour is a measure of acceleration-if they were going 6.1knots and accelerating at 2.2 knots per hour, after 3 hours, they would be going 12.7knots….they’d have to ditch more than their bathing suits to go that fast in their Hunter 😮
haha highest we've ever gone was 11 its in her and that felt FAST!
1 knot per hour = 1.15 miles per hour approximately I amariner ocean going
@@43bobbyg You are talking about one knot, a knot per hour is not used, as ericmichell said, it is a unit of acceleration.
And two knots are what came loose from her string bikini.
I wouldn't make it ... this video makes me sea-sick just watching it! 🤢 lol!!!
Wait til you see the rest of the way!!🥴😆
