this year is going to be my first time planting food plots. we have 200 acres and I'm starting 3 one acre plots and I don't no what I should plant. I learn alot from your videos and understand the lime and weed control I just don't no what best plant
I just had to share with you that I tried your mock scrape with a vine and I got some great footage of a buck making a scrape already. I would love to show you the video sometime. I had 5 visits from does and bucks 👍🏻. The next mock scrape I make , I plan to position it closer to the trail. Thanks Jeff
I've had the same type of results. Found a well-beaten trail, did a little work to move a stand into that vicinity, utilized a natural broken branch that overhangs the trail, scraped it up a bit. I literally have video of a buck peeing in it...and lots of frequent visitors. Awesome!
we have two small chicory plots and intend to plant more. The deer have them down to 1.5 inches tall and don't leave them alone - they are browsed to near oblivion. Probably has to do with the fact that we don't live in an agricultural area... but to say deer don't like chicory simply isn't true. Plus chicory has done the best at withstanding the droughts and heat we have down here (S MO).
Do you know rye has a low forage value and is hard for animals to digest? If you start in spring with a round up ready soybean plot and add in your other favorite seeds after your second spraying you will have a massive amount of food for fall and winter. If you add in clover, you can have free nitrogen to start next planting season with.
Tilling is also about time. There are ways to get the same results if planned properly. Tilling dries the soil, opens the land for possible erosion, exposed more weed seeds and most of the time folks are discing in weeds or summer crops, as opposed to planting something that was building the soil. No till is by far better than tilling for food plots, either with no till equipment or using my ultimate no till recipe. Either way tho, you have to practice effective weed control! Critical in farming and food plotting...
Thanks for the info! Here in SE Michigan we had almost zero rain in August. Got almost no germination out of 50lb oats, 1lb tillage radish, 1lb purple top turnip on a quarter acre. Hoping the rye I'm planning to seed this week with some fertilizer will fair better.
When planting beans only buy round up ready beans. Then spray the plot to kill weeds a day before over seeding with beans or a different crop. Beans will grow untill the first frost or they finish growing. Hint buy a few bushel of beans from the local farmer this fall. Cost around 8 bucks a bushel. These should be round up ready too. A bushel will plant around a acre. I always do my beans in two plantings. So I will have pods from the first planting for late season and green foliage during bow season. I overseeded my beans with beans around July 15th. I live in heavy ag so I dont have to worry about over browsing.
Great video, thanks Jeff. Important to spray that rye at about 6 to 8 inches tall in the spring like you mentioned in another video. I didn't spray mine on time this year and then it gave me some problems. Lesson learned. But yes, after using this method last 2 years, the rye is definitely a good savior to a failing plot. Thanks for all the info and honesty.
My buckwheat came up ok considering hot weather and lack of rain. I planted roughly two acres of buckwheat broken down into half acre plots. It was browsed down completely to the stocks. I have roughly 100 acres with soy bean Ag about quarter mile away. I have never planted summer food. Is it possible my doe population is too high?
Where do you buy bulk seed? Feed and Garden stores? Do they normally keep these types of seed in stock? Or is there a good online solution to this. I’m having trouble finding seed for sale in bulk
I have just recently found your channel and i hate to rush life but i cant wait til next year So i can put your advice to work. Thanks for taking the time to share your knowledge.
This answered my exact questions I was having this week!! I sprayed a small 0.25 acre fallow field 6 days ago, and this confirmed my next steps !! Next season in same spot I plan on starting the No Till buck wheat rotation 👍🏼
Just here to say, I appreciate you! I’ve been watching your videos Every night for 8 months. You put out great and continuous useful content. I have followed your foodplot and land management tips on a 27 acre tract of land I just bought in Missouri for the last 6 months. I already have seen increased whitetail traffic. I plan to follow your recommendations for years to come.
Thank you very much Brent, really appreciate it and it means a lot! I'm excited for you and I will try to keep the content coming as best as possible ☺️
I start my food plot in the beginning of spring and is slowing dieing off. Should I go ahead and mow it and plant it again most of it was the throw and grow and I had mix chickery and some other stuff in it. This is my forest food plot I had ever made. Thanks
Nice video thanks. In my area of SW MI deer love chicory and seem to select the chicory at times in my clover patch. Probably more of summer food though. I use a similar system but don’t do with buckwheat. I frost seed clover every March as my cover crop and seems to establish well. I have to mow one time in late May to knock out weeds and the rye before it develops seed. Late July gets one spray of glyphosate. Then Fall plot is Oats and Brassica mix in August then top dress with Cereal Rye in September. Perhaps I have a doe factory but I just harvest a bunch and I’m lucky to have the depth of cover for bucks. Been working great for years. What would be advantage of buckwheat vs my plow down clover method?
Hi Jeff , great information! I have a 1 acre soybean plot here in Central PA. It has a electric fence so they are doing well . My question is ,,,,can I broadcast brassicas into my soybeans before they get too big , for when the beans get chewed down ? My thoughts are the brassicas will come up after beans get hammered, and brassicas will carry on growing???? Kind regards
Hi Jimmy, you sure can...but only when they are about to turn and the soybean leaves allow sunlight to hit the germinating brassica. So you just have to watch the timing. Will be a great 1-2 punch for you! Can over-seed heavy rye in September on a portion too! Deer will love the fresh young rye growing in the beans...
Winter Rye is an amazing cover crop. We planted 12 acres here in NJ in mid Sept and within 5days it was 3-4” tall. By Oct 1 it was 6” tall and green. Perfect for our wedding on the farm and the horses.
I also wanted to share that your buckwheat rotation has started on our first food plot. It’s doing phenomenal. I plan on planting cereal rye for this fall. However I jumped the gun a bit and planted buckwheat the 2nd week of June . The buckwheat is already chest high, any thoughts on how to handle this? Should I go ahead and plant cereal rye the first week here in August. (Seems early)The buckwheat has a few seeds forming already. We are in the northern half of Ohio.
Great info here. I really appreciate all the info you provide. Good stuff. Are there any videos planned for more difficult habitat? specifically how to improve mountain forest property in the mountains of west Virginia? No fields...no farms in site?
It’s crazy to go look at food plot bag mixes and really look and see what they include. So many combinations that if you look close don’t mix well for management.
Have you any suggestions for a dry west central Texas new food plot? I just started with a new tractor. Shredded, plowing this weekend to try to break up the never plowed soil. It's in the Conch Valley, super dry, no irrigation.
That’s for these videos been point out a lot of things we have been doing wrong! In southern maryland sandy old tobacco ground normally plant fall plots in late August early September. Normally don’t get our first frost till early November. On our failed clover plot from this spring that’s came up as mostly grass. Mowed it a couple weeks ago hoping to help control but just not enough clover in it. If we spray mid August with round up and 3 weeks later do a broadcast brassica planting and roll it and spray again if needed and then follow up with oats 3 weeks later if conditions are right we should get a good crop.
@Jeff. Do you think oats or wheat are likely to out compete brassicas+clover mix when planted as first round of fall plot (oats/wheat to be used as cover crop)? Plan to top/over seed with rye 4-6 weeks after first planting.
Yea, I decided not to take your advice in the spring and planted soybeans! About 3 weeks ago I bush hogged the whole field which consisted of 99% Xanthium weed (cocklebur). Terrible. I have since tilled it under and waiting for weeds to germinate before I kill it and plant rye and clover(for spring green up.) I live in south east Tn and your advice is right on!
So for planting winter rye.. you suggest disking if needed.. just broadcast the winter rye on top the soil and leave it be? Or would it be better to drag the soil after broadcasting.. thanks
You talk about small hunting plots and travel plots alot in other videos, ever plant a no till plot on a gas line? I'm in Southern PA and this particular gas line is a huge travel point for deer from bedding to farmland, problem is it is all weeds so its used alot in summer but not fall, just doing it on a gasline seems weird, maybe I'm over thinking it I've never done food plots before but your videos are making me want to try it. Your no till method has me the most interested cuz like you say not everyone can afford the big farming equipment Great videos also btw
Thanks. Our buckwheat is looking great, except on one hilltop food plot. Will use your tillage radish/oats blend on that plot. Thanks for the relevant learnings.
@Whitetail Habitat Solutions Just tried to purchase your web class, but the checkout process is broken. :-( I sent a message through your contact form on your website with a link to a screencast showing the issue. Hope to hear from you soon. Thanks.
@whitetail Habitat solutions I have 3/4 acres open ready to plant, sprayed with Glyphosate 1 week ago. i have ordered brassica from Northwood whitetail and also have a 50 lb bag of Soybeans. Would you mix them or split the plot?
Quick question...if I have bare soil in mid northern Michigan and im going to plant cereal rye in August/September. Do i still need to fertilize with the seed or just plant the seed ontop of the soil? Thanks again and great informative video.
Perfect timing for this vid! I tried your ultimate no till strategy with buckwheat this season on a new 1/2 ac plot at our VA mountain home to try converting field secession into fall food. After the turkeys ravaged the seeds and the deer destroyed the sprouts, I'm left with 4" tall buckwheat and the weeds are trying to get a foothold once more. Planned to spray again and plant brassicas and rye 2nd to 3rd week of Aug.
Jeff, on the no till where you seed into buckwheat, smash and then glyphosate. Are you using a round up ready seed? I was told by Antler King and Whitetail institute if I spray glyphosate over their seeds it will kill them as their seeds are not round up ready.
Hi Casey if they told you that they misunderstood you. You can spray all the Glyphosate you want over the seeds and it will not harm them in any way. Glyphosate is a post emergent. It will only kill plants that are already growing, not seeds. I am sure they just misunderstood the question... BTW, been doing this for 2 decades ☺️ With zero failure. Will do it again with roughly 15 acres of my own plots this year.
My buckwheat was ate down before growing over a foot tall which let weeds eventually grow up in between the buckwheat. What can I do to avoid over-browsing causing this food plot fail in the future?
Same problem I had this year as well. Buckwheat never managed to get over 6-8" in height and the weeds took over. I'm planning to mow and bag it this weekend. Lightly disk and plant. Then hit it with RU. Hopefully that will salvage my plot!
Drought in mid Michigan this year has been terrible. It's so sad seeing like 4 little buckwheat sprouts out of everything I planted. :( I really hope I can still establish my clover and brassicas without the buckwheat. Definitely about to stock up on a couple hundred pounds of Northwoods rye grain when it's back in stock!
@@whitetailhabitatsolutions9751 Yes! totally agree..hung my last 2 stands last night within bow range of my mock scrapes on my travel corridors parallel to my borders that connect my bedding and feeding! been a long 7 months of hard labor all based on your knowledge! never been so excited for bow season. Exodus trail cam will be here by the weekend!.
Hey so it’s summertime right and I got a picture of some nice bucks during day light but I haven’t got trail camera pics of them in like a month what does this mean
When you say 2 quarts per acre of glyphosate, do you mean pure glyphosate or a product that contains a certain percentage of glyphosate? I have a product that is 50% glyphosate, so should I use a gallon of that per acre?
Hey Jeff! I love your videos. I live on a doe factory in North Alabama. Do you have any opinions on how livestock such as cattle affect a deer herd. Could I lower doe numbers by grazing cattle in the summers? I have a lot of old field habitat. Maybe if I put cows in there, does would go somewhere else? Thanks!
Hey Jeff, can you do a video on how you retrieve deer on your property without blowing it out? If shot in the morning or shot in the evening... I know a guy who as soon as he shoots, he's on the ground, stomping around, walking back and forth... blows the entire area for the other hunters hunting the piece. I wish he would stay in the tree, focus on where he shot the deer, where he hit it and where he saw it last.
Hi Steve! Glyphosate is a broad based killer, 2-4D is a broadleaf specific herbicide and holds MUCH more power to kill broadleafs. Common ag mix...2-4D kills broadleafs that Gly will not.
JEFF You have changed the way I look at food plots! I enjoy your video's so much that the hunt is secondary to all the fun in prepping and planning throughout the summer/fall. Never stop the content!
Hi Jacob really depends on where you are located but not until Labor day in most locations. You can push that back to mid Sept in locations like Southern OH, IL and IN
Actually the best kind of soil for my ultimate no till system...even if you have to begin the process by tilling in buckwheat around June 1st. That system was born out of poor soil... ua-cam.com/video/CwzP0yME2AU/v-deo.html The buckwheat becomes your quality soil layer...
Tough call. Of you can see the ground pretty easily you can spray right now, and seed and spray again in mid August. If the weeds are too thick, you may want to till now, then spray in 3-4 weeks while broadcasting seed on the same day with a high quality cultipacker like the Packermaxx
@@whitetailhabitatsolutions9751 thank u FYI I learned a lot from ur videos and I just put in one water hole with a mock scrap i hope it works thanks Jeff
What would you recommend to over seed a soy bean plot with? Oats or Rye? Brassicas? I have a plot of soy beans that seems to be a little thin and getting over browsed so just looking for some advice on what to come spread on top of the exposed soil.
It will depend on the row spacing of the beans (IMO). A tight canopy may only allow rye and radishes. A more open canopy may allow an earlier seeding of brassicas.
Depends on your sprayer rate. There is not set amount. I use a 40" boom with 2 nozzles on the back of my ATV at about 7-8 mph. That will use 25 gallons to spray 2 acres. You need to figure out your coverage rate and then add chemicals
Put my Brassicas, peas and beans in yesterday. Plenty of moisture here in west central MN. Wanted to get it out in the moisture, future forcast looks drier, so wanted to get it what moisture we have. Rye will be put in later. :D
I follow your advice to a "T", Jeff. The only issue I'm having is my plot is on a very slight grade and it seems everytime I plant, a thunderstorm washes my seed down to the low side and I get lots if bare ground and so I reseed again. I was thinking of lightly discing with my ATV across the grain of the slope, thus creating crevices to catch the seed. It wouldn't be deep at all but thought it could help and wouldn't add much work because my plot is only 150 yards from my house. Thoughts? Thank you so much for all the info over the years and congrats on the channel growth.
What would you use to kill weeds on a field edge when a soybean field (farmed field) is nearby? I'm afraid to use chemicals that could float into the soybeans and kill the farmer's crop
When winter rye is planted this fall, it will green up the following spring, correct? What is done with it the following summer? Do you kill it off and plant new in fall again? Thanks, Matt
Boy that really depends...in most cases yes, in particular when planting the big seeds. In some cases there is too much weed trash for Brassicas...just depends on type of weeds and overall % of buckwheat
Hey Jeff, thanks for all the videos over the past many years. I'm in Northwest Pennsylvania and experimenting with a couple small (1/4 - 1/2 acre) woodland opening plots this year using your ultimate no-till method. Soil wasn't the best to start with, coupled with the absent rain making my buckwheat pretty sparse. Still going to follow through with oats, grains, peas, and brassica in about 3 weeks. If things aren't looking good and still have a lot of bare soil I'm planning on heavy seeding winter rye. QUESTION - Have you ever dealt with Triticale? It seems to be gaining in popularity and just thought I would ask for any experiences before possibly experimenting with it in place of the rye on one of the plots.
Crazy idea, my father owns a farm and I'd like to add rye grain after he chops the corn off. The corn field will have stalks but almost zero weeds... I think it's a 250 pounds per acre. What are your thoughts?
Jeff- Is a half acre too small of a plot to plan half brassica? Should I fully plant cereal grains instead? If so, when do I plant the full cereal grain? Late August? Thanks
I started using your ultimate no till method this year with buckwheat here in Northeast PA. I just finished up building some micro plots in the woods where i cut down a stand of dead ash, so i am getting ready to seed everything this week. Rain has been minimal recently. Anyways, the buckwheat looks great and it is almost a shame to sentence it to death, but i know it is a must. My only question i have is how do you repeat the process in the spring? Do you just recommend spraying everything in april/may and disking it up and planting the buckwheat june 1st, or just broadcasting the buckwheat onto the surface and packing it? i started with a plowed and disked plot, broadcast the seed and then drug it in with chain link fence this year. I had germination in 4 days. I am just not sure how to repeat the process correctly. Thanks again for your videos and sharing your knowledge.
You’re the man, I love every post and can’t wait to see the next one...Always fresh content and reminders of things that work! I love the fact you’re ATV/planting by hand no big equipment and get results. I love G.D. TV but not everyone can afford a seed drill and Hydraulic crimper. Thanks for letting me watch and learn! I have 40 acres in Medford WI. I would gladly pay you for a break down, if possible?
What book do you have out with, that knowledge penned in? NO WAY I can retain that without reading it several times. I swamped and saddle bagged my wheel horse 3 times mowing the DEAD weeds down in the semi dry marsh so, I can get it tilled for my sugar beets. Getting pumped up for season.
Whitetail Habitat Solutions It does. It is our first year owning property and we are trying to follow your food plot plan but the buckwheat got taken over by weeds. So it is reassuring to get a video like this! Thanks!!!
I planted buckwheat this past June, had a pretty good drought here in northwest pa this year, I have a bunch of weeds with the buckwheat that came up. What’s your thoughts on how to proceed? I was thinking about putting gly to it this week to kill it, then in the next 2 weeks spread my seed into the dying weeds and buckwheat when I know there’s some good rain coming and mash it down. Not to sure what process to do. Thanks for your videos, I’ve been watching for years now. I love all the info you give to us to use on are own property’s.
I just sprayed for the 3rd time yesterday here in SE WI. Wasn’t able to get my buckwheat in this year. Just waiting for some rain now to get my brassica and clover/chicory down. Have Rye on stand by. Do you have a cut off date when waiting for a rain?
Seems you're really pounding this information home I appreciate it all for certain season opens here the 15th of September I broke my right foot foot today, life is full of challenges
Hey Jeff, I'm doing the no till plot. Buckwheat is doing awesome. One thing, my buckwheat is four feet in some area's, I should plant fall seeds asap, right? Wasnt sure what would happen it let buckwheat grow too high
Hey Jeff, I have a 3 acre plow of plow down clover and it over cane with lots of weeds and grass. Can I just kill it then over seed it with fall forage blend?
Jeff...we have been fighting the food plots this season, as we did not get the most important first kill done effectively. I realize you have stated this before, but how many gallons are you putting down per acre with your RU spraying. I also believe you are mixing 1.5 to 2 gal RU per acre. thanks, Bob
That means a lot to me Curtis...that's a long time and I r ally appreciate it! Hopefully you think the channel has been consistent and heading in the right direction 👍
@@whitetailhabitatsolutions9751 Your killing it.i get it and understand your angle and self taught knowledge. Keep having fun. The lands you hunt are very different from our farm in Southwest Minnesota. We have very open areas up here on the Buffalo Ridge and the Orange army always makes problems for our farm during gun season. I myself am a naturalist and a green builder so thats how I run my farms. It is more difficult and sometimes my food plots are not perfect. But they do hold the deer and our farm is one of those that naturally grows a deer herd in the fall. The biggest problems we have are the neighbors who hunt our property line and shoot into our farm. Did you know that in Minnesota that you can shoot into another farm to kill a deer. And if you do not have your farm legally posted that person can walk on your farm to retrieve the dead "poached" deer. Last year the "orange army' shot a doe on the neighbors. should of been down in ten feet but it ran a half a mile from where it was shot onto our farm and the orange army thought I would let them go get it while four pickup trucks were posted on all access around the farm waiting for me to go find his doe and push my farm. I spend a lot fo time on this farm making it a bow property. And still the orange army tries to mess it up. Out here in Lincoln County MN during gun season I will have to watch thirty men pushing the neighbors farms while pick up trucks race around the section shooting our of windows at the deer that they bump. Its a sad state of hunting our here. But everyone knows to stay the Xuck off our farm now. They know I won't take the abuse. The problem is we have no game wardens out here. anyway.
Look into the notill system. Spray Seed rye Next spring spray seed buckwheat Then sprayed in August and use more rye- oats mix. Rocks become a non issue
I asked this before but I have new plots that I just got permission to create on the land I hunt. I also don't have access to equipment other than my lawn tractor so I mowed an acre of 3-5 foot grass over this past weekend. I am going to spray this week to allow for some regrow so the gly takes. Am I S.O.L. on planting how you plant with forage on one half and brassicas on the other half or would it be best to layer the rye this fall so it acts as a smother crop? Keep up the good work!
Hi. Mike! I would actually spray immediately, so the chemical soaks right into the root system. As long as you can see the soil...or get seed onto soil...you may really enjoy a mid August Brassica planting. I would actually spray now, seed in mid August and spray again at the same time if needed. The rye may actually be too small to get thru the thatch. In hindsight, always better NOT to mow, because it puts a layer of thatch in the ground this time of the year to get seed thru. So the Brassica may give you a fighting chance because the seeds are so tiny...may be able to get thru to the ground in a few weeks.
@@whitetailhabitatsolutions9751 I was going to try to get all the thatch off after it dried a little either by blowing, sweeping or bagging and then dragging the dethather. I just have lawn equipment so starting is interesting.
Mike Immel I went through it myself a bit earlier this year. After spraying twice I mowed all one direction to clear off most of the thatch. I have a good amount of bare soil now. Your challenge may also be compaction if you never broke the ground at all and have a lot of thick vegetation like grass. I used a tooth drag after my second spraying to rip the top soils dead roots and I now have about 1/4 inch of fine soil for a bed. Definitely brought up a bit more weeds/grass but I already sprayed the regrowth again and I’m in good shape. Not ideal like Jeff said but can be done.
@@TheGuyFromWI - I am also from WI! I am hoping dragging the dethatcher rake followed by going over it with the bagging attachment will get the thatch and will allow for better soil-to-seed contact or that's what I am hoping for. All the work put in now should make it WAY better come this time next year. My hope is high but my expectations are low for and great plot this fall but anything is better than nothing.
Mike Immel having a bagger should be a big help. Especially if you haven’t mowed it already and have a bunch of dead compressed thatch on top of the soil. Live and learn, I was bummed I wasn’t able to get my buckwheat in this year for a smother crop. I have the seed and everything, but I’ll be in better shape next season with having better expectations. If it’s your first planting you might want to look into a soil test. Whitetail institute has a test that was about $20 with shipping and I got my results in 48 hours after they received it. Saved me hundreds of dollars on lime and exposed deficiencies that caused crop failure in previous years. I’m looking forward to a better plot this year. Jeff’s advice has been huge.
Glad to hear you say mixing clover with brassicas is ok! Do you still recommend light oats and peas also planted in with brassica as a sweetener or will they all compete with each other?
Definately...you can frost seed any time after Sept 15th to October 1st. You just have to get seed onto the soil. Do not till or disc to plant at this time...you will just create an explosion of weed growth next Spring. Then use Simazine prior to spring green-up, and a combo of 1 pint per acre of 2-4D and 2 quarts per acre of Gly 2-3 weeks after spring green up.
When planting my plot, if you were unable to get buck wheat established and you've killed your plot, should you just broadcast your seed or will the soil be to hard and dry for it to take? I can lightly disc but that refers back to your weed issue. Thanks Jeff.
Thanks Jeff! I have a question. Do you have any suggestions on hunting a specific deer when you have a neighbor that hunts as well? I put in a good plot to help my chances!
Daanngggggg man... that's crappy. I'm in Lorain County Ohio! (I noticed your username). If you're ever looking to hunt somewhere else up here, or need an experienced buddy to tag along with you at one of your spots, feel free to let me know. I've got a few MONSTER 4yr+ bucks up here right now ready to harvest this year (but I can only take 2 of them myself, but we need to take 4 of them out to strengthen our ratio here.) :)
I dont know if this will help you bit when we plant buckwheat we cut a evergreen tree down and drags over our food plot to cover that up so our birds dont get it all
I love how passionate you are. Having just purchased some land my food plot is small but growing each year. Do you recommend using seeds that are left over due to buying too much from last year?
Winter rye is cereal rye. Never plant rye grass. I made that mistake years ago planting buck on the bag seed it took two years to kill the rye grass! That stuff is worse than weeds.
Whenn you put out the brassicas, you mentioned putting out cereal rye and oats with it, did you mean half the plot is brassicas and the other half is rye/oats, or is the entire plot brassicas and you just split up the rye/oats 50/50 on top of the full brassica plot?
Great recovery info Jeff, my plots are 60/40 buckwheat to weeds. What would you recommend for that ? And when is the 2020 Best food plot mix video coming? Thanks again
I challenge you to go chemical free. Why do you ask. Well the birds and the bees and possible cancer to start. It is possible to do this with out chemicals, or at the least you could cut you chemicals down by half. But thats my challenge to you. Now you could take up this challenge and let it fail. Or you could make it happen and make the world a better place. So if you accept this challenge you might surprise yourself.
Your information is the best!

@@whitetailhabitatsolutions9751 appreciate the response. Those are great points.

Where do you buy bulk seed? Feed and Garden stores? Do they normally keep these types of seed in stock? Or is there a good online solution to this. I’m having trouble finding seed for sale in bulk
All of your videos have helped me establish a plan with confidence on my new property. Thank you so much Jeff.
I had a clover plot fail , spiked toothed it and spread 6 lbs of winter rye . Should i roll it or let rain set the seed ?
Putting my last round of spraying in this weekend and hoping for rain in August. Your no-till method has been my go to for the last few years.
Bravo nice video...i have extremely sandy soil and new plot. What would u recommend to build up vitality of plot....not factoring in deer attraction?
@@whitetailhabitatsolutions9751 Great !! Thanks Jeff
Brian man so true...sad. more with fillers, bad seed and then buzz words to suck your dollars away! Crazy...very few you should trust
I'm in Southern PA and this particular gas line is a huge travel point for deer from bedding to farmland, problem is it is all weeds so its used alot in summer but not fall, just doing it on a gasline seems weird, maybe I'm over thinking it
I've never done food plots before but your videos are making me want to try it. Your no till method has me the most interested cuz like you say not everyone can afford the big farming equipment
Great videos also btw
What do you think about birds foot trefoil? How do you deal with wolfs? I’m in northern mn
How do i kill wild ferns, so i can plant deer food plots or cover plants?
Whitetail Habitat Solutions thank you Jeff, I appreciate the response!
Awesome! Thanks Jeff
Thank you and you are very welcome!! Love this time of year - really pulling some stuff together this time of year and lots of fun!
Thanks!
Thanks Jeff, been learning from you for sometime now , have great info! and i have had some killer plots because of ur teaching and vids.
Jeff - what is the purpose or advantage of mixing the 2-4D and glyphosate? Vs one or the other?
Hi Steve! Glyphosate is a broad based killer, 2-4D is a broadleaf specific herbicide and holds MUCH more power to kill broadleafs. Common ag mix...2-4D kills broadleafs that Gly will not.
What seed company do you use again i forgot
JEFF You have changed the way I look at food plots! I enjoy your video's so much that the hunt is secondary to all the fun in prepping and planning throughout the summer/fall. Never stop the content!
When is it best to plant winter rye?
Hi Jacob really depends on where you are located but not until Labor day in most locations. You can push that back to mid Sept in locations like Southern OH, IL and IN
@@whitetailhabitatsolutions9751 what about northeast texas?
We spray and till. Unfortunately my soil is too poor, rocky and with too much clay to no-till. We've tried it. Never works.
Actually the best kind of soil for my ultimate no till system...even if you have to begin the process by tilling in buckwheat around June 1st. That system was born out of poor soil...
ua-cam.com/video/CwzP0yME2AU/v-deo.html
The buckwheat becomes your quality soil layer...
Should I till my food plot then spray them before I start planting?
You may need to emphasize the difference between rye grain and rye grass, so people use the correct rye. Thanks for info.
Oh for sure...hundreds of times for years...almost daily
What would you recommend to over seed a soy bean plot with? Oats or Rye? Brassicas? I have a plot of soy beans that seems to be a little thin and getting over browsed so just looking for some advice on what to come spread on top of the exposed soil.
It will depend on the row spacing of the beans (IMO). A tight canopy may only allow rye and radishes. A more open canopy may allow an earlier seeding of brassicas.
2qts per acre to how many gallons of water Jeff
Is it too early to plant winter rye in early July? I planted my 1 acre plot on July 1st and the winter rye is coming up great. But is it too early?
If you have half buckwheat and half weeds can you spread seed and smash down
Boy that really depends...in most cases yes, in particular when planting the big seeds.
My food plot if partially weedy. Should i spray the problem spots or everything?

I needed this video. 🙌
Ha, likely quite a few folks will ☺️ Really hope that it all helps
Whitetail Habitat Solutions It does. It is our first year owning property and we are trying to follow your food plot plan but the buckwheat got taken over by weeds. So it is reassuring to get a video like this! Thanks!!!
Very cool...good luck, there is always hope!
I have standing clover with a lot of weeds. What can I use to kill just the weeds to add more clover this fall?
Clethodim
I also believe you are mixing 1.5 to 2 gal RU per acre. thanks, Bob
Just sprayed again this morning. Most of the weeds were dead. But I want them all dead.Going to plant brassicas next week if all goes well.
I do like your channel man. Have been watching for a couple years now.
The problem is we have no game wardens out here. anyway.
Hi Jeff Great information! I have a lot of rocks in my food plot in WV Should I rake them up or will I get more weeds?
Look into the notill system.
Spray
Seed rye
Next spring spray seed buckwheat
Then sprayed in August and use more rye- oats mix.

This is gonna come in SUPER handy for my little girl and all her 'hunting plans' I have to hear about all the time now. Lol
Can you plant switchgrass in the fall for stratification and then spray simazine in the spring over it?
My farmer sprayed all my food plots and corn and then planted beans after he told me we wasn't going to plant and I cleared everything.
Couple detail questions Jeff.....
Glyphosate 41% or 50%?
Are you spraying around 12 gallons an acre? Thx.
What to do about birds eating the majority of buckwheat seed on bare soil? I was going to go back out and spread more. Any ideas here?
H Aaron I haven't had that happen before? Definately keep the weeds down and the soil will be all set to broadcast seed in in August 👍
Got everything ready to get planting. can't wait to get rolling.

Ekk.. I jumped the gun and planted some clover earlier. Winter Rye will be the go to more than likely if the deer keep hitting the plot hard.
I would plan on adding around Labor day heavy...clover doesn't tend to catch up this time of the year
Are you saying winter rye grass or cereal rye
Winter rye is cereal rye. Never plant rye grass. I made that mistake years ago planting buck on the bag seed it took two years to kill the rye grass! That stuff is worse than weeds.
What's better this hunting season, shooting a monster buck or 100k subscribers? Great Work!

Yes for sure 🙂 NOT RYE GRASS
I challenge you to go chemical free. Why do you ask. Well the birds and the bees and possible cancer to start.
