What do you think about this drum set?

It Sounds fantastic. I had a 73 Black and Silver badge, in purple Sparkle, got it from Steve Maxwell, it also sounded lovely. Left it with a friend in NYC when I returned to the UK. Never returned to US and never saw it or my friend again. All I have to show for it is a 13" tom I brought back. I like to think its out there somewhere, being played regularly.

It sounds great. I remember Slingerland from that Era and a buddy of mine had a 1973 chrome over wood double bass (virgin), and it looked and sounded amazing. DW should really start moving on this line and reintroduce it to the younger drummer's..

They really do sound wonderful. That being said, I had the edges done on my Cloud Badge RK snare. It went from the old vintage sound to a more dynamic vintage sound. I play it often. I also did the edges on my 75 Slingerlands. They can tune up high and sing or down low and they go into beast mode. I am frightened to think of what those drums are capable of if they got a little buzz cut. I think you would create a monster touring drum set.

      Butt ugly, pitts or no.
Sound good. Back in '66 I was back and forth between Slinger's and Rogers, Went Rogers because of Swiv-o-matic and loved the sound of the Dyna-Sonic Chrome? Steel?--can't remember although it's probably on the receipt I still have, somewhere. Those things and my man, Dave Clark, yeah, I pounded, no lessons, by ear pounding. Didn't have the 5 bucks a week for lessons and mom said nope, not paying. PO'ed cause I gave up piano after 6 years, essentially '$2 a week for 6 years, down the drain, wasted!', biggest...no, 2nd biggest (exwife, biggest) mistake of my life. She offered me a Hammond B3 and Wurlitzer tone cabinet if I stuck out 4 more years.
Yep, idiot boy, yes I was. So stupid I kept the girl she said was nuts instead of taking the '68 Camaro Rallye Sport convertible she offered me to can her butt. See, told ya, idiot.

I have one of these kits, It was called the Concorde, twin 24” bass drums 12” 13” 14” 15” toms, 16” 20” floor toms. Didn’t get the bongos or the snare but it is an amazing sounding kit. The 20” floor Tom is a literal cannon!

Years ago I got a copper wood set drums were bass 22"
    The toms were
    6",8",10,12",13",14",15",
    Floor toms were,
    16",18",20",
The snare's were 5x14 and 6.5x14 both were TDR snare's.
But the coolest thing was the 6"-14" mounted toms were Slingerland "Cut Away " toms. Talking rare sets

I had a copper over wood TDR snare. I think it was 6.5 x 14 with the TDR strainer. Absolutely great sounding drum and as long as you could protect the copper from oxidyzing it looked feakin' awesome. I bought it in 1973 after seeing the Santa Clara Vanguard drum corps introduce that color and it looked incredibly badass.

Oh!!!! I've only seen a couple pictures of that copper drum line! Would love to have seen that! Late last year I finally found a 12x15 copper 10 lug gut snare! Unbelievable flame maple interior. It sounds soooo great with a clear dot Remo on it. I brought back to life with a NOS gut assembly and some love. My experience is some of these are incredibly pitted but others are just fine... maybe a climate thing, maybe a manufacturing thing. I have some pristine snare drum examples that look like they were made 5 years ago.

As a young guy, I grew up, through high school, playing Slingerland Drums (marching, concert and drum sets). I liked the TDR throwoffs, especially on their marching snare drums. Fast forward to college, Slingerland was used for marching percussion - the snare drums were interesting thin maple shells, with a clunky throwoff.
For me, the brand represents nostalgia, and I’m glad that you are enjoying your set!
    Cheers! 🍻

Absolutley. People can be as nostalgic as they want to be regarding classic drums...The drums sang, but the hardware I grew up was awful. Flimsy, easy to strip threads, etc. I remember when Tama first appeared. Drums wer ok but the stands, etc were tanks. Now pretty much all the hardware is decent.

I have a Mid-90’s Slingerland Studio King Gregg Bissonette signature kit that was owned by John Luke Hebert of King Diamond. It was actually used to record KD’s Voodoo album. A few years after I bought them from John Luke, Gregg did a clinic in my home town. I brought the kit for him to check out. He was so excited to see it he ended up playing it for part of the clinic and signing the inside of the kit.
I love that kit so much. Not only does it have an amazing story, it’s just one of the best kits I’ve ever heard. I miss Slingerland so much. I hope DW does something good with the name.

Ian Paice & Phil Collins, both Englishmen, are the only drummers who readily come to mind using right hand hi-hats with floor toms on the left. My guess is the 'reverse set' might chiefly be an English or European approach/mindset/conceit. I rarely see American drummers playing southpaw kits. What's your theory?

Great job on this video! Interesting story, too ...I didn't know this stuff. I used to love Slingerland drums. Had a simply amazing custom kit made back in '77 at Frank's Drum Shop in Chicago on Wabash. 6, 8, 10, 12, 13, 15, single headed "power" (deep) toms, 18 & 20 floors ...monster 26 x18 kick. A Neil Peart "sort of" kit with a Zeppelin similar-size kick. $2500 back in that day. Black wrap around 5-ply maple shells. All Yamaha hardware drilled into the bare Slingerland shells right there in front of my own eyes. Rims, lugs, mounts, etc. I was 17 back then. Not only was it an awesome experience & much, much fun, but the kit itself sounded off-the-charts. Freakin' amazing. I had a Slingerland "black chrome" (over maple) set before that. THAT was an amazing kit, as well. Is why I went to a Slingerland shell for my custom build. Slingerlands used to be exxxcellent drums. This was a cool video! I remember these well! Thanks for this!

I got a 14”x22” kick back in 1974 copper wrapped over wood Slingerland. Still the beat sounding kick I have ever had and still play it now. It was an error in shipping or the person who bought the kit did not want a double bass kit, whichever I would up with a kick I just love even though it has much patina on it. Have though I may un wrap it and refinish since its maple but so far just left it to be.

Neil Peart used the Concert Tom's in the Copper Finish. They were added to his original Slingerland kit and can be seen on the cover of "All The World's A Stage," live album. They modified the photo a bit, so the Copper and the Chrome on the main kit, blended better.

I had a set just like this one that I bought in 1970's. The copper did exactly like the second tom you showed. Considerable tarnishing and pitting. The set sounded fine and at the time my favorite drummer Phil Ehart was endorsing them. But the shells looked terrible after a few years, so I ended up getting rid of them and buying a Pearl World Series (which sounded great but had a similar problem as the Slingerland set, it was white and had been in fluorescent lighting that yellowed the toms).

I bought one of these drum sets at a thrift store about ten years ago. It has 10, 12, 13, and 14 inch concert toms and an 18” floor tom. The bass drum is a 26”. The real interesting piece is the snare drum…6.5x14” but the batter side has 12 lugs and the resonant side has 6 lugs. I mainly just use the snare drum and occasionally the bass drum. All the drums are pretty corroded, but I don’t mind it so much anymore…gives it some character…but I also didn’t buy it new.

My first new kit was a 1974 Slingerland 5 piece in natural wood (I'm old) which I bought from The Drum Shop in downtown Detroit. Natural wood was the cheapest finish - all the wraps were more expensive. It was the worst set of drums I've ever owned. When the tom shells were set on a glass plate they would all wobble like a drunken sailor - just terrible edges. The stain was uneven and looked like it was finished by a blind man. They sounded like playing cardboard boxes. The COB snare, though, was a beauty. I trashed the rest of the set but still own and occasionally use the snare. It's sad but not surprising that Slingerland went out of business.
Also, occasionally watch your videos and still learning from them. Thank you!

really amazing looking kit. So cool..I have a question as a NOOB "drummer". I say drummer in quotations because i never call myself a drummer. I just say I make noise. SO having that out the way. I dont mic my kit. I simply dont have the money, knowledge and i guess "need" for it. BUT my question is, how does this kit sound just recorded with a phone? or webcam? or other lesser quality means? Do most kits just sound similar? THEN when you mic them can you change the way everything sounds from there?? Thanks for any information you care to share..

    • @StephenTaylorDrums
      @StephenTaylorDrums  4 місяці тому +3

First off, I need you to start calling yourself a drummer. This is a really important identity shift that we are actually seeking when we start playing the drums. To Call yourself a drummer, you simply need to regularly play the drums. That's it. So you're a drummer.
Different devices sound different when recording a drum set. Phone recording audio is typically pretty harsh and favors thw high end of the sound spectrum. The room you are in has a lot to do with it as well. I have found that a good way to record the drums with decent audio straight to a camera is by using a go pro. They have some compression that the go pro adds that make the drums sound OK. If you mic them and record, yes, there are whole softwares (pro tools, etc) that allow you to massage and tweak the drum sounds to be better.

Once you accept that COLOR SELLS DRUMS nothing will strike you as 'odd'. 'SELLING' was really the name of the Game!! I have owned and played Slingerland drums for close to 50 years and you can really appreciate them when they are played softly; hitting them that hard really doesn't give you a sense of their overall musicality. Uhh, I bought a 1973 set of Slingerlands in antique copper. It tarnished out in six monthes. Ohh and the sounded as bad as the chrome set. I called them and they replaced all the shells!! They told me keep the old shells.I got just wood mahogany stain. Uhh I still have them. Great sounding set. Uhh Slingerland had kind of a bad image.
