    I’m a grandma, and while your creativity in your art is obvious, it’s not really my “prefered flavor” for art. I listen because your wisdom helps me. Thank you for talking us through the life of a creative from your perspective. It is soooooo valuable. I’m not out there with a “platform.” I am making nothing to sell. What I am doing is trying to capture in a beautiful way something to pass on to my children and grandchildren that will outlive me. I don’t want to go wide. I just want to go immortal! :P Just for those I love. And your content crosses that barier so that it isn’t about drawing a robotic picture, but being poured into whatever one is passionate about.

    I like the raw quality to this video, how to use social media and what it’s really for are things that have been going through my head as well, and I’m sure many can relate to that struggle. I agree that newsletters seem a lot more efficient for building a solid fan base; with more space to express yourself, it’s easier to touch people’s lives to create a meaningful connection with fans. Whereas Instagram posts can feel limiting, or like you’ve gotta feed an ever hungry algorithm. Also, gotta say, I was just thinking it would be cool if someone drew a dragon mech, then I saw this video, love it! Haha dragons/dinosaurs and robots/cybernetics are some of my top favorite creative elements. It would be awesome to see a collection of these dragonmechs in a story.

    I actually found this more compelling to watch than other vids where the topic is super focused. Sometimes I sit down to watch a single-topic video, but after the first five minutes I feel like I basically know what the person is saying. No need to sit through more of it. But on this video, I was intent on hearing what you were saying the whole way through.

    I already wasn’t posting much leading up to 2020, but just prior to COVID hitting, I asked myself “If I just stopped posting entirely, would anyone care?” The answer as it turns out, is “No”. And in the four years since, it’s unbelievable the MENTAL LOAD that has been lifted from my brain. I don’t have to think about what is worthy of being posted or shared. I also don’t consume either, apart from YT, which has freed up so much time. The number of books I’ve been able to finish reading has skyrocketed. I’ve had time for creative projects. Granted, I’m not in a creative-type career, so I don’t NEED an audience, so grain of salt. But quitting social media was one of the best decisions I’ve ever made.

What if this dragon mech guy was a very smart and strategic being who's on a mission someone that has a long scheme spanning over lightyears and galaxies. Every big brooding monster skull has faced have primal instincts and basic goals and to throw into the pile a giant monster that thinks and fights like a trained warrior with a clear civilized objective would be a new and cool challenge!

    I always find it a little weird that I encounter so many artists that want to make comic books, but yet never sit down and make them. I am not sure if it is a confidence issue or something else. I hear tons of artist talk about watching or reading motivational material to inspire them to create their comic books. It seems like these people spend more time trying to get inspired instead of sitting down and getting started on their projects. To me if you procrastinate and need inspiration to make a comic book...then maybe making comic books just isn't for you. I don't know. I know I love the process and the thrill of getting my story out there. Whether people like it or not never really concerned me. I know I like my comics and have a blast making them. Making comic books is not hard as it is more of a grind. If you do not like the grind, then comics will be a struggle for you.

      @@jakeparker44 I'm sorry that was not directed at you personally...I was just making an observation. I have talked with some other comic book making friends of mine and we wonder what stops these artists. If anything I am super pump to see and buy everyone's comic book. I guess I just get bummed out when people don't make them...because I want to see and read all people's personal works of art and stories. I hear people tell me all sorts of cool ideas for comics that I want to read and then it never happens. Maybe knowing people out here are excited to read their stories could be a big motivation for some.

    • @jakeparker44
      @jakeparker44  2 роки тому +1

      No need to apologize. I appreciate your perspective, Aaron!
      I think creating a comic is one of the hardest pursuits a visual storyteller can undertake. Regardless of how fun it is to make them, or how much the creator loves comics and wants to be a part of that world, it still requires a ton of creative inertia to write a story that works, then be able to draw the characters, environments, and panel to panel storytelling, and to have the graphic design sensibilities to make everything work together nicely. That’s if you’re doing it on your own. Putting a team together to do this is just as hard. There's roadblocks at every step of the process.
      Then the runway between making a comic, and actually making money from a comic is extremely long. If you are a hobbyist you might just quit if it becomes more work than fun. If you are serious and want to do it professionally, you have to balance making comics with making a living. Sometimes there's no creative energy left in the day after putting everything into your job.
      I think every comic book, the good ones, the bad ones, and even the ugly ones, are precious miracles that defied all odds to make it into this world.

    • @aaronhumphres2990
      @aaronhumphres2990 2 роки тому +2

      @@jakeparker44 Glad you didn't take offense. I have been making my own comic books since I was in 6th grade...now I am 45 and still making them. I discovered the medium and just fell in love with it. Thinking back I can recall overcoming many hurdles in my storytelling process. I think any artist does this in any medium he works in. I do agree comics can compound the hurdles by combining so many different artistic pursuits into one. Writing and drawing can be challenging enough on their own without combining them into the unique language that is sequential art. I will agree that not all my comics were successes, but then again I am personally always a sucker for a challenge and tend to not give up.
      Right now I am finishing up a 300 page graphic novel (Only 24 more pages to go). Doing something like this has helped me identify my weaknesses in my storytelling and art along the way. It has also helped me improve a lot and identify what is actually important. I have been focusing a lot on body language and storytelling a lot more to portray emotion in my characters. I have also been experimenting with panel usage and scene to scene transitions as well. I think doing a project this big helps me in the same way that your Inktober idea helps people with inking by immersing yourself in the craft and working through your mistakes and identifying your strengths. If you are curious you can see my books here humphresillustration.bigcartel.com/
      I think most successful artists love the process of creation more than the final results. No matter how many unsuccessful pictures I make I can always draw another one. I think so many people get caught up with being successful with every artwork or comic they make that is freezes them up. Worry and doubt can hinder any endeavor and stop people in their tracks. They always worry is this going to be successful financially or will people criticize me. I always tell them you will never know unless you make it and put it out there. Of course this can be easier said then done for sure. I feel if you let go and give yourself over to the sheer act of creation that energy will be transfused to the final outcome and make it better. I always suggest try your hand at whatever you want to do and let nature takes its course. Your best skill and talent will come thru at the right time. Let go of victory or defeat and realize this work is an expression of you and that to me is what art is all about.

    Hey Jake, So that's a pilot brush pen? I have a couple of the pentel ink brush pens and i notice that I can't add any type of wet medium to it like watercolor or markers without it reactivating and smearing. Will that ink brush handle water color without smearing? Thanks dude 🙏

    • @jakeparker44

      I have to wait for it to be very dry before I go over it with marker. ANd then if the marker is too wet it will activate the ink again and get smudgy.
