  • Disney's Encanto is a perfect example of how Family Systems Theory is modeled in our roles within our own families. In this complex, yet relatable film, I'll be analyzing roles within the family - including sibling positions, scapegoats and generational trauma.

      Actually there are two different types of generational trauma there is single generational trauma which only the immediate next generation feels but are able to break it and heal. What happening with the Madrigals is Intergenerational Trauma. It is that when one suffers they can’t help but to pass it down, and because of daughters usually take after their mother it adds a new layer and each daughter after suffer more and more trauma. It was always going to be Isabela and Mirabel would be the first to break.

      The original ending would have been better.
      After the collapse Mirabel sees her mother unconscious and badly injured because she was able to overcome casita attempts to keep them safe. It’s obviously a back injury( most likely a spinal injury.) Believing her mother is dead. Mirabel runs away to the river but when Alma starts calling her name Mirabel fight or flight reflex is triggered and she believes Alma is going to yell at her again and runs across the river. Alma arrives to see Mirabel vanishes around the bend.
      She goes back to pack. And then makes her way to the city. Passing by the ruins of her house.
      In a corner of a city park she sees Mirabel crying. Dos Oruguitas plays.
      At the end they make up. However Mirabel says this:
      I don’t think I can even return.
      Alma: I said the same thing about this place but it brought me back. Pedro always said destiny isn’t up to you.
      Any take your time oh your mother is fine. I have a friend here you can alway come back. Two years later, the gifts are muted and casita is despondent. Only for Antonio to reveal a letter telling Mirabel’s coming home. The doorknob is removed and as Mirabel arrives she is giving that doorknob and magic is full back with her and Alma holding the candle. And both of them discovering their true gifts. The four elements.

    This was such a delightful movie, and I really appreciated that there was no twist villain, with the closest thing to an antagonist being Abeula. Most of the conflict revolved around the family's past, and their relationships with each other.

    The creators of Encanto are said that although not shown in the film Camilo suffers from pressure and has insecurities, although he hides it under his cheerful attitude. Although he appreciates her gift, it makes him question his sense of self, and constantly morphing for others tires him.

    Great analysis! Very easy to understand! I just wish the movie had a scene where the family members apologized for all the terrible things they said about Bruno. It felt like he was accepted into the family again as if he had done something bad, but it was Abuella and then the family/ townspeople that painted a bad picture of him as a shameful scapegoat child

      Maybe they will touch on this in that Disney Plus series that was announced? Maybe the family and townsfolk noticing Bruno sort of clenching around them, like he still us friendly but they cannot get close.
      I wish Isabella apologized for being a bitch to Maribel (and Pepa as well) but I think maybe Isabella has a history of mean girl behavior where the towns girls fawn over her but don't want to be her friends.

    I used to be the Bruno of the family, as in everyone blamed me for everything, they assumed I had malicious intentions even though my intentions were always good and I loved my family dearly. I tried to stay in their lives without getting in the way, like how Bruno lived in the walls, but after several years I realized I was going crazy (much like how Bruno was) and just left. I don't talk to my parents or sister anymore because no matter what I did, even when I was being helpful, they would put a dark twist on it.

    As someone from a large family with low scale generational trauma (internalized perfectionism and father-issues) I really felt seen in this movie. Especially the part when Bruno says “Yeah, my gift wasn’t helping my family, but I love my family, you know?” Generational change is extremely difficult and often painful. Wonderful analysis.

    A great metaphor for what's going on in the family can actually be seen in the doors. Every family member except Dolores and Bruno, the eyes on their doors are shut. Dolores and Bruno are the only ones who have eyes open because their gifts have let them see and hear the truth of what's going on. If Mirabel had a door, the eyes would also be open. Everyone else in the family are asleep, pretending nothing is wrong while the pressure of perfectionism is actually breaking them.

    I broke into tears when I saw this scene in Encanto it was just so sad how Bruno felt like he was an outcast and he didn’t belong in the family he misses them so much as well but he’s so afraid to come now because the family thinks he’s a bad person but he’s not

  • @GrifMoNeY

    The scene that really broke me was Dos Oruguitas. Abuela has been carrying that trauma for *decades*, never sharing with anyone how it truly affected her, never showing her real pain. Nobody in the family could possibly relate, because she's dedicated her life to making sure they lived in peace. She even wrapped it up in family legend, telling the story over and over, but only the facts, only the sanitized version, never how she really felt and what she lost. And it all culminated in her realizing that she never got over it, that this trauma was destroying her family.

  • @marvincorre4783
    @marvincorre4783 2 роки тому +13

    All of the characters in Encanto was toxic to each other by blaming each other, misunderstanding each other, not showing empathy and always putting so much expectations towars other family members.
    All the things that Abuela did to the family was inexcusable but once learning her perspective and her backstory, it is understandable on why she put so much expectations and responsibilities towards the family to be perfect all the time. She witnessed her husband murdered in front of her which traumatized her for life and caused her to put expectations and responsibilities towards the family so the family wouldn’t suffer the same fate as what Pedro did.
    Mirabel was blamed by the family for things that she didn’t do. Even though she wasn’t involved in any event, she was always blamed and penalized all the time. She was also shunned by the family just because she didn’t had a gift. She tries to be happy and positive but in the inside, she is feeling negative emotions and insecurities. All the things where Mirabel was excluded caused the friction between her and Isabela. Mirabel wants to be perfect instead of being the spacegoat, Isabela is everything Mirabel wants to be. When she realizes that her sisters and the family is suffering, she doesn’t put them into consequences for what they did to Mirabel, she shows empathy and understands their feelings like where she comforted Luisa after Luisa told Mirabel the pressure that she was subjected to and where she wanted Isabela to grow carnivorous and exotic plants instead of beautiful flowers so Isabela can be free instead of being perfect.
    Just like Mirabel, Bruno was also blamed from the family for things he didn’t even do. His visions was really bad which caused negativity and chaos. The family and the townspeople portrayed Bruno as the “bad guy” just because his visions provided bad moments in their life. Bruno left the family and exiled himself to protect Miranel after seeing Mirabel in the vision implying that Mirabel “might” be the reason why the magic is dying. He didn’t want Mirabel to experience the same treatment like he did.
    Both Luisa and Isabela was pressured by expectations and responsibilities by Abuela. Both the family and the townsfolk ordered Luisa to do all the responsibilities instead of doing the work themselves. The expectations got so bad that it developed stress for Luisa. She harbored the feelings by acting happy and positive all the time. Isabela was the “Perfect Golden Child”, everything she did had to be perfect to keep the family’s image. She didn’t wanna marry Mariano in the first place but she did it to make the family and Abuela happy. She also harbored the stress that she was subjected to but it also caused the friction between her and Mirabel. Isabela wants to be free, her own self and not being perfect. Mirabel is everything Isabela wants to be but she can’t because she doesn’t want Abuela to be harsh towards her.

      i feel like, personally I noticed with my narcissist dad I would usually be the golden child but he would flip over barely anything and then I become the scapegoat, this wouldn't be based off my actions and just his views and manipulation flipping over time. And the middle child is another dynamic that you will be apart of your identity irregardless if you are also the scape goat or golden child but it will impact the dynamic you have if that makes sense so yes I feel like you could be all three

      I was adopted by my grandparents and I can tell you 100% I have been all three of these aspects and placement. And Bruno at times. Always misplaced, but expected to be perfect, and a pillar of strength all while being blamed and treated as the bad one when I was only trying to help. My family still does this and it got really bad when my mother passed in 2021.

  • @zc8673

    I really think this movie brushes over serious lifelong abuse as if it were a simple misunderstanding that can be resolved with a hug and a "sorry".
    The way Mirabel both apologizes and the PRAISES her abuser towards the end absolutely boggled my mind. All while her abuser not only has absolutely zero consequences for her actions, but also gets everything she wanted in the first place, all for a flimsy promise of "I'll get better" with no follow through to be seen.
    The songs make jokes of the children's experiences while not condemning the actions of abuse that both led them there, and are still occuring. Luisa's crushing song turning into a donkey dance number. (Before you say, "but its a kid's movie", Inside Out managed to do an even better job of being nuanced and enjoyable while not making jokes of the characters pain.)
    The overplayed and overpraised "we dont talk about bruno" being all about scapgoating him and essentially forcing him into exile while not condemning those actions, but instead attempting to pull at your heartstrings when you see his self-made plate a couple of scenes later, as if he wouldn't have any negative geelings towards the people who abused and neglected him his whole life but tather is desperate to be with them again. At the end he's accepted back as if he did something wrong, not as if the family was willing and ready to apologize and make it up to him.
    These are just a couple examples of where this film managers to completely drip the ball, having a decent representation of abuse but somehow ending up praising and encouraging the abusers.

    • @HeatherThomCounselling
      @HeatherThomCounselling  2 роки тому +10

      That's a good question! I think it depends on their age and maybe personal experience - they might be able to see some resemblance, but the concepts are complex to grasp and the movie barely scratched the surface when it comes to family systems. I imagine that the movie is moreso for the parents and emerging adults to reflect on their own family systems and to make changes in their future, if they choose. The movie is a great at starting the conversation though!
