the fact abuela is always saying pepa has a cloud and not asking her why she has the cloud is so sad but so realistic at the same time, especially in the context of a family

      This is the real answer.
To Abuela, each of the family members was defined by their power, not by who they were.

Just another example of Alma not fully understanding what these gifts are. She wanted the cloud gone, but couldn't fully understand that it was tied to Pepa's feelings and what she was asking of her. As effective as it would be if it worked, emotions don't turn off or reset, only built up and released.

I actually feel bad for Pepa. Of course, everyone in the family has some issues with expressing their emotions freely because of Abuela, but when Pepa is upset, you can literally SEE it and it can affect others a lot. So all her life she was probably forced to always be happy, and all her negative emotions just always kept building up, never being properly released :(

I have cataplexy . So In times of high emotion stress I'll have sudden loss of muscle tone and my body can collapse. If I don't keep my emotions under control then I lose control of my body. When my father was dying. I had to sleep outside in the car one night during a thunderstorm,, Because I couldn't get my arms and legs to move. I'll try to scream out for help but no sound will come out. During My worst cataplexy attacks, Starts with loss of my vision everything goes black, And then my whole body crumbles as I lose feeling In my legs the rest of my body. I can't see I can't feel I can't speak but I can hear everything and conscious of what's going on around me. Terrifying and frustrating.
At 1st I saw myself relating to Louisa, But with a lot of these videos coming out and finding more characters are relate to more. I went from Louisa to Isabella and now peppa. I find it interesting how at face value of watching the movie I see myself in these characters and I think I'm absolutely sure and I don't have that much connection with the others, Until I watch a video like this and and I see them at a different angle I didn't see before. so fascinating To me. It helps me to look at myself my memories and everything in a different perception. Shutting more light upon the bigger picture. And condos such a great movie , thank you. For your videos.

I’m glad that the writers gave Pepa such a supporting husband. When you reach the end of the film and Bruno tells her to just let her emotions out and that it’s okay for her to express herself, Felix jumps in a says “That’s what I’ve been saying!”, and it’s true. If you rewatch the film, you can see how differently everyone treats Pepa. Abuela is always telling Pepa “You have a cloud” or “Calm down”, which just upsets Pepa even more. However, Felix won’t tell her to calm down or get rid of her cloud, and instead tells her to just move it somewhere else. For example, “The flowers, the flowers!”. Felix isn’t telling her to get rid of her tornado, but he’s asking her to move it so it won’t damage the decor. This actually seems to help Pepa calm down a bit because he’s not telling her to stop being anxious, but just to take it somewhere else.

  • @farenorenda

My head cannon is that Pepa's anxiety over her clouds is because Abuela keeps pointing them out, usually in a negative light. That Pepa isn't upset about them until it's pointed out. Cuz if tears leads to rain, not all tears are sad. You can have tears of joy over events... like a wedding. But if you're always told clouds = bad, you'll never see a cloud as a moment of joy.

I was actually wondering if the storms aren’t the kind of emotion but rather the strength. So her wedding is a huge moment for her, and generates a hurricane. At the end she can joyfully dance in hail because she’s just that happy. Her anxiety and breathing exercises are from a lifetime of trying to not feel ANY emotion strongly.

As someone with an anxiety disorder I felt so bad for Pepa. She's feeling the same things as everyone else, but her power makes her emotions so obvious so literally she can't hide it. And because Abuela keeps trying to get her to control what is essentially uncontrollable for the sake of appearances and order, she feels anxious about being anxious (and anxious about her emotions changing the weather) which makes it that much worse. There's nothing worse than the fear of fear, and the fear that you're going to lose yourself to your anxiety.

      Me: can't, doing the Bathroom.
Someone: why can't you just pause and do it now?
Me: because I'm already on the bathroom, and if I stop everything to do something it'll put everything out of oder!
      Someone: what order?
      ~
Someone: want help with the kitchen?
Me: uh, sure, wanna wash dishes?
      Someone: how about I mop?
      Me: NO
      Someone: why?
Me: because that's the last step!
      Someone: step?
Me: I was thought to clean the kitchen in certain order, mopping is the last thing you, so we don't mop until everything else is done.

One thing you didn't talk much about is the effect Abuela had on Pepa. YES!! Exactly!!! There's nothing wrong with Pepa's emotions or the way she expresses them. It's because she always has to surpress them that they BECOME a problem. Even though it was rushed in the end, I love how Bruno tells her that she should let her feeling 'go' and when the family, the 'casita', is healed again, we see her and Felix happily dancing in the rain.
It was never that Pepa's emotions were a problem - they were MADE into a problem and her constant surpression of them BECAME a problem.
Seriously, that family is the posterchild of the toxic family full with posterchildren of children of toxic families, and Pepa is one of them. She is the child who is never allowed to show what she really feels and always has to project the 'happy happy family face' towards the outside. Then we have the Golden Child and the Scapegoat in Isabela and Mirabel. Of course we also have the child who sees the problems in the family and dares to adress them only to then promptly be pointed out as the 'squeeky wheel' and becomes the 'problem child' in Bruno. We have the child who is capable in an emergency and so has to shoulder ALL the burdens until she breaks in Luisa, and the child who knows the problems in the family and becomes the secret keeper (Dolores). And that's just the tip of the iceberg. And it all sprouts from ABUELA. ABUELA is the problem, not Pepa's emotions.

    • @alexursu4403
      @alexursu4403 2 роки тому +23

      Copy pasted from somewhere else:
On Pepa's wedding day, it's likely - no scratch that - definitely because of how Abuela kept telling her to act happy. The stress and expectations from that would've probably lead to the hurricane even if Bruno would've gave no "weather report".

There's one aspect to Pepa's character I was hoping you'd touch upon. When she begins the song about Bruno, Felix sings accompaniment, reinforces her lines, mirroring her in both tone and posture. But each time he does, Pepa looks on at him in annoyance until she storms of, saying, "Are you telling the story or am I?" After he dotes on her a bit, she's fine with his accompaniment and no longer reacts.
I thought this was a very interesting reaction. As you stated, Pepa probably feels less like a person and more like an event, and probably excuses herself from a lot of interactions entirely. So when the spotlight is on her, she's loath to let it go; it's something she's needed but, because of the storms, she had to tamp down. Felix is insightful and picks up on her moods and thoughts quite well, balancing her out. It is a nurturing relationship.

I think a lot of the problem here is that Abuela has one ideal emotion for her - and that emotion isn't happy, it's calm. Pepa is clearly happy when she's dancing in hail at the end. She has a moment with Camilo earlier that is so loving and sweet but it is raining, and you can see that she has so much more comfort with expressing her true self away from her mother - and with her doting and loving son who cares for her. Abuela has taught her that clear skies is the ideal but that means that not only is she blocked off from fully experiencing her negative emotions, but she's also not really able to feel the full range of positive ones without being told that she is disturbing others.

They live in a very lush green village that wouldn't need only sun to grow but also out-of-season rain. How could Pepa help? By making it rain on command in other words by being sad on command, as if her emotions weren't hers to feel but others to dictate. @@purplezombie4940 highly sensitive people can be misdiagnosed with autism due to overlap in some sensory issues, among other things. For example, being overwhelmed by lots of noise, or irritated by a tag in your clothes to the point of distraction and meltdown (commonly in younger kids). I once thought "oh, am I autistic?" based on certain aspects common in autism, but I clearly don't fit the actual diagnosis criteria. Same goes for OCD and ADD. Highly sensitive is a much more accurate match for me as a whole. Though, of course people can be both.

Pepa strikes me as the embodiment of the happiness industry: smile, feel positive, show only joy, and the world will be bright and sunny. In her case, literally. That is just as much self-suppression as her nieces, Isobela and Louisa, have to deal with. Plus, everyone has to treat her with kid gloves, given that frustration could flatten houses or destroy the year's harvest: when Camilo is giving her tea to help her calm down, is he being a loving son or a child with first hand experience of how bad Mama's wrath can really be?
Sure, she can get away with snapping back at her mother, because she can never have the perfect masks that others can wear. But that seems a very small safety valve.

There's probably some natural worry for the destruction her anxiety could cause, but I doubt he's afraid of her hurting him. He calmly sits her down, reassures her, and tries to helps her breathe deeply, with just a calm look and tone. When she gets startled and accidentally zaps him she looks worried and sorry. We don't get to see the aftermath of that tiny clip but from what we see of Pepa being apologetic whenever her powers bother someone or worried that they would, she wouldn't intentionally hurt anyone, much less her children with them.

To be perfectly fair, most of the time we see Bruno is when he's interacting with his niece. The times he interacts with his mother and sisters are during their reunion and he's attempting to explain himself to them in a sincere way. It's entirely possible that he HAD occasionally been mischievous with Pepa and Julieta growing up. He IS still their little brother, after all.

Pepa dancing in the hail reminded me of probably one of the most important things I've learned about emotions and mood from therapy. I have Bipolar Disorder so something I've learned to ask myself when I feel intense emotion or a longer lasting mood is "why do I feel this way?" to distinguish whether there is a reason I'm feeling this way, or is it an episode. Expanding on that, I've also learned that just because an emotion or mood hurts doesn't mean it's not okay to feel them. Giving your negative emotions time to play out and letting them exist is really important, even if it's painful to do at first.

What I find adorable about Pepa is that given her gift and being raised by Alma, you'd expect her to be a "toxic positivity" type of person (think Joy in Inside Out) - and she does try to do that, but completely fails every time. She can't do toxic positivity, no matter how hard she tries. She's incapable of being anything but completely authentic, all the time. Perhaps that's what Félix likes about her; he's always authentic too.

I love how you described the reunion between the three siblings, because Pepa's reaction to seeing Bruno again is something I have seen happen myself, and it's something really special.
    Story time!
My mother has an older sister who is mentally ill and has to take meds to keep herself sane and not slip into a very cruel form of paranoia, something that was left unchecked for an incredibly long time when she was young. This made her develop an incredibly strained relationship with her parents and my mom.
Eventually she cut ties with everyone and moved away to France with her husband and (now) two sons, basically disowning herself from the family.
My moms told me several stories of awful things she'd done to her or their parents, almost in the same sense Pepa and the other Madrigals talk about Bruno.
Anyway, many years pass by then. My grandpa died, she sought out contact again in that time with my mom and grandma, and she even eventually flew back to meet them for the first time in years. She had changed.. Was no longer the person she was in her youth. She was dutifully taking meds for her condition, allowing her to level out and act like herself again. Didnt even remember the awful things she did in their youth apparently.
Anyway, I went with my mother to visit my grandma's place (where she was staying) as a bit of backup, and I got to see firsthand how during the entire ride my mom was tense, not looking forward to it. But when we arrived, and she actually /saw/ her sister? I saw how years of anger and grudges just.. Wash away in an instant as she went over and even embraced her. It was as if none of what had happened mattered anymore. My mom described it to me like that after the fact as well. She had missed her older sister so much, even if she had buried those feelings for so long. Nowadays, they have a pretty positive and healthy bond where they send eachother care packages every few months and talk regularly. (with my grandma too)
At the end of the day, my mom did tell her that she was never going to forget the hell she had put her and their mother through.. But she was glad to see that she was herself again, and wanted to mend what was broken.
Anyway, that's why I thought the reunion scene was so touching and realistic. Sometimes negative emotions just.. Wash away the moment we see someone for the first time in years who we cared for a lot.
    Thanks for reading!

Being positive all the time is not healthy, and I knew it since the beginning. Even pointing it out to her using Pixar's Inside Out didn't sway her (she just seemed to assume I was 'being negative' again and brushed me off to 'discourage the negative emotions'). Honestly, i think its just done for the song. Peppa is the one telling Mirabel the story, Felix just happens to be in the room! When someone is talking about something that you are interested in or excited about, of course you want to share your perspective! Felix is a loving husband and father. He wants to support his family, the people he loves and cares about. When he sees Peppa in distress he does what he can to try and calm her down. He also tries to teach her that its ok to feel what youre feeling in the moment, to not bottle up your emotions, something that she has been all but forced to do her entire life. Felix doesnt do all of that because he has to, he does it because he WANTS to, because he really loves Peppa and he WANTS her to be happy, not because its his job.

  • @DogFlamingoXIII

I don't think that Pepa's desire for her wedding day to be so perfect was entirely on her. Of course, all brides want their wedding day to be great, but the line Felix sings in "We Don't Talk About Bruno" is most telling, when he sings, "No clouds allowed in the sky". Alma kept such a stressful hold on making the Madrigal family look so perfect to the public that big events, like the wedding of one of the first generation of powerful keepers of the gift had to be perfect -- no clouds allowed in the sky. She was terrified of not being able to do things right for her mother. She had such a difficult time with anxiety, and everyone could see and judge every feeling she experienced. Anytime she didn't have the proper emotion, everyone was there to make sure she knew she was doing the wrong thing (except Felix, Bruno trying, and Camilo growing into the role). We should also give her credit for the fact that when Casita came down, the weather was clear, because she was trying to find Mirabel and make sure she was okay and that gave her the ability to keep things under control.

LOVE these videos! I always learn something that I can apply to my life from her videos! I also love how sweet and soft of a voice she has! I have a very loud voice naturally and I'm an in-home geriatric nurse so all of my patients suffer from at least a little hearing loss. So I talk louder for them and then I get home after spending all day at work and I just don't realize I'm yelling when I'm talking about the weather or what to have for dinner tonight xD

I really love this whole analysis. I think we all can learn how to control our anxiety and our destructive thoughts. Do you think you could do Julieta soon? She's someone I relate the most, cause she strikes me as very empathetic and caring.

I relate to Pepa mostly on the spiraling episodes when i get hit with an anxiety attack where my brain thinks this one thing I said or did is going to lead to the world ending or someone I care about being hurt. I've gotten better about it over the last few years but it sneaks up on me every now and again.
Also as said by many people here Felix is a s rank tier husband.

I remember watching this tv show, supergirl season 1, where due to red kryptonite, she unleashes all the negative emotion she has bottled up throughout the years, her way of doing so wad through anger, and I remember every time I watched it I would get so angry as well.
Her emotions affecting mine cuz I’m absorbing it

I am not an outwardly emotional person, but I my feelings are 🐸ing *deep* and difficult to understand for me. they often come so unexpectedly, they come delayed to the actual cause or suddenly when I don't know what they mean. I need time to properly decipher and process them to logically understand why they're there.
l could relate to pepa because of the need to always being on edge because of a potentially looming thunder storm...that's what it sometimes feels like.
Also she's stimming with her hair and I love that.

I want to get to a point where I can handle mistakes as gracefully as you did there. You forgot the earrings - a detail that would make the costume look complete - yet you used 'magic' and made a joke out of it midway instead of tiring yourself and redoing the first half again. I love how chill that was, and the joke actually made me smile.
A lot of the time, I worry too much about things going the wrong way that I forget how well things usually go. This week, even though I've practiced piano every day for half an hour, I still wasn't ready to show my teacher the piece I'm supposed to play. I worried I was being lazy by not upping the time, even when my boyfriend pointed out that I don't focus as well on longer practice sessions as I do with more compact ones. I started stressing that I'd look like a total idiot in class the next day, but today, my piano teacher cancelled and said he was busy getting settled back in after a New Year's vacation. It all turned out well in the end - I get more time to practice, so I'll most likely be ready by my next lesson on Monday where we'll do the show-and-tell for the piece, but I just wish I hadn't spent all that time worrying.
Sometimes I focus so much on the end result that I end up with a perfectly played piece that brings me no joy at all. But then what do I focus on? Practice is boring, I mess up while repeating the same song over and over to try and prepare to play it well by the next class, only to either beat myself up if I mess up on the day-of, or play it perfectly and toss the accolades aside to focus on the next piece.
I want to play piano because the idea of playing it well and actually enjoying it is appealing to me. But if I'm not enjoying it when I focus on the journey or the final result, what am I supposed to focus on?

Bruno: just asks Peppa "what about this weather, hu?"
Peppa: "HE WANTED TO RUIN MY WEDDING! LOOK AT THAT MISCHIEVOUS GRIN!"

  • @inukaiya1509

I heard some people say that "mischievous grin" was probably bruno just awkward smiling because he was trying to make a joke to calm her. But for Pepa it probably seemed like a mischievous grin of trouble.

In Pepa's scene she's not dancing under snow. The speed at which it's falling and the way it bounces off of Felix's head makes it pretty clear that it's hail. It's not just annoying weather, it's literally *painful.* Really underscores how difficult it would be to put that weather out of mind.

I love the fact that you mentioned distraction. For me personally if I have to keep discussing what is making me upset or someone brings it up I just feel worse and it’s better for me mentally and emotionally to either think of something else or do something else e.g. exercise, going to clothing stores, watching UA-cam videos unrelated to the problem

Everything little thing has a massive effect, and isn't timed or caused by movement on Pepa out of proportion with anything else has to deal with. Bruno thought it would cool them down, but Pepa doesn't have a direct choice in it so it was a huge reaction.
