Matt is an absolute beast, and it was an honour being able to film him!
your teams product is so fucking clean
garstka, berklee trained, winning comps since he was a kid. Master class drummer.
"I'm more impressed by linpincott than I was with CAFO" I see, you're a man of culture as well.
I think you'll like AAL titles such as "The Brain Dance", "Para Mexer" or "Physical Education".
cafo just gets more attention because of the intro
@@maaaaaap I mean I love the song but it's not my absolute Favorite but that being said, CAFO changed after Matt joined the band. The way he plays that song is just immaculate.
Para Mexer doesn't get enough love, one of my absolute favorites:)
andrew halcomb Para Mexer is a top 10 minimum for me from them. It’s such a beautiful piece of music.
arithmophobia, backpfeifengesicht
Matt Garstka is my favorite drummer to watch. The "WHAT JUST HAPPENED" reaction is a common one for me haha
Animals as Leaders has such a great sound, and everyone involved is so talented. I remember first hearing their self-titled in 2009 and even though I wasn't into the djent influence at first, I knew that they were going to be a great influence in music. Seen them live probably like 5 or 6 times? For a while it felt like they were on every other bill that I went to.
AAL has a great live performance of The Brain Dance (The Dunlop Sessions), off their last album. I like that song a lot.
This is exactly the reaction I like to see when someone listens to AAL. It's a good yard stick to measure if someone is paying attention to, or listens critically to music.
I went to Berklee at the same time as Matt, he is just one of the greatest drummers on the planet and he keeps getting better. His band Victoria is something to certainly check out
Oooh, he's in another band? I'm definitely interested in that.
Critical Reactions yeah Victoria is just Matt on drums and a guitarist, and they do some crazy progressive stuff with just two instruments. Also Matt mentioned in a Q&A that the album he did with Casimir Liberski has the most difficult drum parts hes ever recorded and after checking it out I can see why he said that. Lol
LOVE IT BRO! Animals As Leaders is the band that woke me up, in every sense of the word! My lifestyle, perception of life, musicaly etc!
WORDDDDD
He's insane. Just found out recently that he streams on Twitch. Plays all kinds of sick "beats".
That's awesome! I'll have to check that out.
Matt streams on twitch? ...shit. I've been missing out lol
Its crazy because Tosin actually writes a lot of the drum parts too. They are a fucking power trio.
Oh awesome whats his Twitch name?
Matt doesn't need a metronome, a metronome needs matt.
also if you want some more insanity with drumming I would suggest these drummers
Dan Presland with Ne Obliviscaris
Baard Kolstad with Leprous, the song Moon is incredible for that
Alex Rudinger with any Good Tiger song
Anup Sastry with something from Skyharbor or Intervals would be really solid
Based on what you’re saying, for AAL, do Brain Dance next
For more Matt, look at the few jams he did with pianist Eldar Djangirov. A track called “Vertigo”, video was sponsored by meinl cymbals. I think the project was called GEM.
I also really like his work on cosmic liberty by casimir liberski, especially the song cosmic liberty.
This is usually my reocmmendation whenever somebody reacts to Matt. The GEM project put out some really great work.
this times 1000
@@fubar1217 would be great if they made an album or released the songs to buy
Daniel Horn On themeinl podcast with matt , they talk about the fact THAT a whole album released sometime soon by GEM
I have a theory on how he manages to keep time in his head: he breaks everything down into smaller and smaller components (i'e hemi-demi-semi-hemi-demi-semi quavers, if there is such a thing) and he voices certain notes in the fill but the rest is, well... a whole bunch hemi-demi-semi-etc. rest notes.
also dude, keep rambling on. I'm a rambler but I love to hear other people ramble too.
The Joy of Motion is one of the best albums of the decade (wether you count 2010-2019 or 2011-2020). I can't believe it's been almost 4 years since their last release, though.
7 years actually....madness of Many is 4 years
@@isaackmojica8302 I know. I said 4 years simce their last release, but that Joy of Motion is their best one, in my opinion.
I would reccomend listening to The Brain Dance or Apeirophobia. They really show antoher, "softer" side of AAL and I think you would really enjoy them! :D
only fair to react to the whole band now... maybe the brain dance performance.
Arithmophobia is a blast to watch as well
The brain dance has to be one of my favorites. Especially live
Seeing them live is amazing. When things go back to normal I suggest seeing them, tickets are usually not that expensive and they tour a lot. I ran into the guitarist Tosin randomly at one concert and shook his hand.
I also met Tosin while we were just hanging out before a concert and we chatted for a bit. Super nice guy.
That's a great explanation of Garstka... he's got time in his veins. I would HIGHLY recommend checking out more of his drum play throughs that are newer. Though Lippincott is great, that was a younger Matt and he's only gotten better with time.
When it comes to Matt's conception of time I kind of agree with Spock's Quote. “When you eliminate the impossible, whatever remains, however improbable, must be the truth.” Great Reaction!
A lot of people mention The Brain Dance as a go-to AAL compositional song, but I think some of the ones where Javier, the rhythm guitarist, seemingly had more influence like Para Mexer showcase a much stronger melody like you're looking for.
He is a blend of most of my favourite styles in prog pushing limits of time. One of my all time favourite musicians.
Matt is so enjoyable to watch! He looks like he’s having so much fun when he’s playing.
Hey man first time watching your reaction video and i enjoyed it! If you think Matt is a beast in this you should watch his performance at the UK Drumfest playing "white lighter " that he composed with Casimir liberski
I consider Garstka to be one of the drummers who are a natural evolution from Tomas Haake's/Meshuggah's influence. He has that similar quality of frequently maintaining a 4/4 groove, usually on the cymbals, which allows his other limbs to do some crazy stuff that provides the illusion of the song being polymetric. Compared to Haake I would say Garstka has slightly less groove, but a more jazzy bent. He tends to do more fills and plays with time a bit more freely and frequently. Great stuff either way.
BTW, that little fill/solo that blew your mind? That's similar to stuff that Jamie Saint Merat from Ulcerate does like every other bar. I still watch him after dozens of times and have no idea what he's doing most of the time.
I'm also one of those that watch the whole video. :)
The thing with AAL is that the discography makes absolute sense when you go chronologically, and if you add Tosin earlier work (Reflux - The Illusion of Democracy) you get a better picture of the evolution of Tosins songwriting, after all AAL started as a kind of solo project with Misha Mansoor help.
Reflux was a heavily prog oriented hardcore band, AAL self titled comes after Tosin disappeared to "learn how to play" (like if Reflux stuff wasn't complicated enough) as such it ended up being a more "traditional" record; and IIRC Misha helped to program drums and record bass and after that Tosin went to find people who could play that stuff. At the end he end up linking with Javier & Navene and ditched the idea of a bassist due to both guitars being 8 strings.
For the Weightless cycle Javier & Navene helped with the songwriting and Tosin was being a bit more experimental, IMO this record is the most accessible and easy to listen to. After Navene departure & Matt joined (sickdrummer has a Weightless live drumcam thats insane) is when the band got really jazzy & experimental.
In The Joy of Motion & The Madness of Many things just got to a complete new level, between Javier & Tosin being absolute monster and Matt time wizardry, I can't honestly recommend this band to anyone who doesn't already enjoys prog music, because is as challenging AF.
One of my favorite bands ever.
TL;DR: AAL = wizards.
The drummer before Matt on AAL is Navene Koperweis. Pretty sick dude too. He plays on Entheos and had collaborated on other proyects too.
The song never really lets you settle. Even during the break, when Matt's not even playing, they're introducing a new polyrhythm. Such a masterpiece. Tosin must've asked, "Hey, Matt, how can far can we take 3/4?"
He is #1 in my list of best drummers (or least in the top 5)! Truly a machine and living metronome (as well as the rest of the members. As a matter of fact, all of my favorite drummers are machines. 💗🙌🏽👍🏽🤘🏽😊
This has to be the best video caption to date
Thank god you chose this song. Great tune! Better than any of the other AAL tracks you have reacted to. Oh hey! There I am in the video!
By the way if you are looking for a good album by them I'd recommend listening to "The Joy of Motion" first. It was actually produced I'm pretty sure by Misha Mansoor of Periphery (I think he did their self titled album as well) and I think it is their best album.
Check out Animal as Leaders - The Brain Dance (live ). It is very beautiful tune!
Awesome reaction dude thankyou
If you want to talk about Matt being a time Wizard, and you're definitely not the first person to call him that, watch: Victoria - Kepler, Victoria - Iris and GEM - Torque. He loves to do a lot of Metric Modulation but the way he does it is so smooth that you can't even tell you're being modulated until it's too late lol. My favorite performance of Lippincott I'll link below as well as the others.

I'm not a technician neither a real musician but what strikes me the most is how Matt seems so relaxed & smiling while digging the sh...out of his drum kit...and on top of that it sounds cool...Crazy..Happy also to see you're being overwhelmed & unable to decipher all his tricks (though you explain a lot in other analysis of their work, but this is reassuring in a way....Music is not only about technique (of course it is mind you), but of course feeling, but what I mean is there's gotta be some "magic" in there, at least I believe it...
Oh yeah, Matt is just grooving along here. You can tell this isn't something he's theory-ed onto paper but something that just feels natural to him. It's complex but very much an extension of himself.
One of my favorite AAL songs! Nice!
Edit: I have to agree with others that mention "The Brain Dance". That song is easily their most mature work to date. Every new album I get a 3 new favorite songs by them, but their last album had 3 songs that were such leaps and bounds better than their older stuff. Here are the three songs I recommend by album:
Album 1: Self Titled:
-Tempting Time
-Behaving Badly (my very first ever AAL song heard, instantly got hooked)
-Song of Solomon
Bonus (not released with the album, but kind of a bonus track):
Wave of Babies
Album 2: Weightless (Still my favorite album though has none of my current favorite songs, I'm a sucker for instrumental story telling).
If you care more about composition than technical musicianship, this is without a doubt the album for you. Every song is oozing with mood setting and world building an every detail down to the last electronic note just seems "in place" to do exactly what it needs to do.
-Odessa
-Cylindrical Sea (or Earth Departure, at least one of these two in this category)
-Weightless
Underrated Gem of the Album (an early release, started and stayed one of my favorites)
-Isolated Incidents
Album 3: Joys of Motion
Less world building / story telling than Weightless. Albums 1, 3, 4 are more about tracks that stand alone and instantiate an idea as song. Songs I like more individually than the first 2 albums:
-Lippincott (you just heard this)
-Physical Education
-The Woven Web
Bonus: For something in the album REALLY different from everything else, experimenting with Latin feels, definitely check out:
-Para Mexer
Album 4: The Madness of Many
I'll be honest, most the songs of this album I don't like. But the songs I like, I REALLY like.
-Arithmophobia (you've done this one)
-Inner Assassins (you would dig this a ton, given your eye toward broad composition)
-The Brain Dance (my current overall favorite, but still love the other two listed).
I have only listened to their last two albums and still, this is almost at the top for me aside from periphery and dream theater
@@cgm-hk1et I discovered Reptile by Periphery thanks to this channel. I love that song. But yeah Octavarium by Dream Theater was a very formative song for me as a teenager so it was fun seeing this channel react to it.
there is a thing in percussion called metric modulation where you change the pulse or feel even though the time sig and the tempo arent/havent changed. so for example you can have a pulse of a section be 8th notes and then metric mod into a dotted quarter or dotted 8th and now that mod is the new pulse and it feels weird but it all still lines up because the time signature and the tempo havent changed. then eventually you can go back to the normal 8th note pulse or whatever you want it to be
ua-cam.com/video/ldda7vhmuxU/v-deo.html
@@stevenlee7 simple example: you are playing triplets in 4/4 and the modulation happens, the same rhythm is now quarter notes instead of triplets so you can change the beat accordingly. the tempo changes in this example though
@@stevenlee7 Chris Turner from Oceans Ate Alaska made a video explaining it, look it up it's super fun. Also check OAA out if you don't know them. Crazy drums
it's okay to not know what Matt is doing, we're only human.
The perception of a song when you can see an exceptional drummer playing worth every second. It happens to me with leprous, baard kolstad and whatever song he plays
I think what you keep trying to describe is how Tosin Abasi once put it. To paraphrase what he said, they're working on the concept of poly-rhythmic grooves. I'm happy you loved this guy as much as I hoped you would. I've been blown away by these guys since I discovered them back in 2016, Matt in particular oddly enough, but not right away. What initially drew me in was Tosin 'cause I'm primarily a guitarist, but Matt just elevates the band to new heights. If you could do some more Gojira I'd be thrilled, because those guys blow me away as well. Mario Duplantier is the drummer that inspired me to learn the drums. They're a really interesting band if you take the time to look into them.
So glad you checked this out. Garstka is absolutely a time wizard, hahaha. Please check out more AAL performances! You gotta see what the guitarists do, too.
For another time wizard check out Tigran Hamasyan - What the Waves Brought, to hear him beatbox at Garstka's level while also playing piano at an utterly virtuosic level.
(if you already know Tigran and that's why you haven't checked him out yet, just let me know and I'll stfu, lol)
For the more compositional AAL pieces, I'd recommend starting with a live performance of The Brain Dance. It's a more mellow song where Tosin uses an acoustic guitar. For a fun song with a great groove and solid compositional elements, the crowd-pleaser song Physical Education is a good choice. The main motif used in the chorus is from an older jazz song, I'm pretty sure from the big band era, but don't quote me on that.
But also, Tosin and Javier have a side project they did with a member of the Mars Volta and the drummer from Suicide Silence called T.R.A.M. that was more of a progressive jazz-fusion album. It includes some woodwinds, so it's a lot jazzier.
Garstka made an album with Casimir Liberski (pianist) , I highly recommend the first song - New Life.
I put that in my "watch later" so fast.
@@CriticalReactions Hahaha nice👍
@@CriticalReactions I join the request for reacting to Casimir Liberski. Being less heavy than AAL, the magic of rhythms in their music is even more expressed. You will love it for sure. (but my choice is the track "White Lighter" )
Lmao, never seen you so animated. This has been a really fun week despite your disclaimers about watching drums :p
Yeah dude, that little fill threw me way off. I like to think that I have a strong enough understanding of core music to process most of what I hear but even after a fifth listen I still can't comprehend that fill. I really need some sheet music for that thing 😅
Hey, I watched it through so I got to hear about your plans. I sometimes also skip on parts of the discussion if I'm not super interested in the particular song you're reacting to.
He told "1" to go play for a few seconds, then snatched it back up just in time for dinner! 😁
If you're doing drum cams. Between the buried and me, Blake Richardson. There's a series that follows him through all 3 songs of parallax
my mans you gotta check out travis orbin sometime, i think it would be fun to watch a fresh experience. the stuff that dude pulls is insane
Listen to Mestis thats Javier the guitarists other project. As for animals, Their most recent album as well as weightless are my favorites for composition.
I know you have a bunch of comments about this recommendation already, but your should react to The Brain Dance next because it's probably the strongest song in their entire discography composition-wise. A few other recommendations if you want some less show offy stuff:
Modern Meat and On Impulse from their self titled album
David and Isolated Incidents from their second album, Weightless (just know that this is their weakest album by a fair margin but they still have a couple gems)
Another Year and The Woven Web from The Joy of Motion
Ectogenesis and The Glass Bridge from The Madness of Many
This is overwhelming but I feel that you get a decent view of the more melodic side of the AAL discography with these selections
Knew you'd be blown away on this one. Matt is truly insane beyond comprehension.
I mean honestly if you like Lippincott you will be blown away by their whole album The Joy Of Motion.
The Madness Of Many is also just a masterpiece of an album, you will like anything from that album too.
Animals as leaders be like a Dream Theater with the post graduation kkkkkkk
Garstka is an alien. Love him! 😎
There's something dark and sinister about this track that I dig a lot. Every player on AAL is simply insanely talented. Awesome choice to react to. Great input as always, Bryan!
Matt's a beast. My top drummer. Love their old stuff but the new stuff is good too. I left a list of songs from each album on your cafo review you should definitely check out..... Thank you for this. My dad being a drummer.jammimg alot. I always follow and honed in on drummers.i too love focusing and dissecting music. Great review
I just subscribed to this channel, but I'd love to see what you have to say about the band Oblivion. The main guitarist is a musician/composer, leading a more old school death metal sound, but there's tons of fun and interesting sections of their songs. I'd suggest 'Reclamation' off of 'Called to Rise'.
HELLO FROM THE NUTMEG STATE (CT) IF THE PLAYLIST FOR DRUM CAM VIDS ISNT ALREADY FILLED PLEASE GIVE A LOOK AT MARIO DEPLANTIER FROM GOJIRA... HE'S CONSIDERED THE NEIL PEART OF PROG METAL...IM AWARE YOUVE DONE A GOJIRA REACTION BUT THAT SONG AS GOOD AS IT IS STILL ISNT THE BEST SHOW CASE OF BOTH THEIR COMP SKILL AND DOWN AND DIRTY CHOPS TO PULL OFF THOSE ARRANGMENTS...KEEP UP THE GOOD WORK BROTHER PEACE FROM THE NORTHEAST....
Matt's a machine, one of my favorites tunes of AAL
I wish I could play the drums like that lol
I'm back: Russian Circles - 309 (Empros Live session) *or* Harper Lewis
I just came across your channel and I see you really appreciate good stuff. This is why I'm gonna recommend something really fucked up for you to check - Meshuggah - Bleed ( the drum cam video of Thomas Haake) and Infant Annihilatior - Cuntcrusher (again the drum cam video). If you haven't seen those, they're gonna blow your mind. First one is a display of mad fuckin' rhythm and the second one is just....just unbelievable at some points throughout the playthrough.
Check out the Matt gartska "tooth and claw" drum cam video
I would love to see you react to Rush. La Villa Strangiato and 2112 are great.
Love drum playthrough videos. Give Aric Improta of Night Verses (Instrumental like AAL. Aric does some crazy stuff) or Eloy Casagrande of Sepultura (so much power) a shot some time!
I posted a comment on your CAFO video about what songs I think you should check out. I made a little description of each top pick that highlight their talent as artists.
Was watching his live stream on twitch recently and someone asked him if he counts when he plays. His answer was that he counted so much repeatedly over years, he no longer counts anything and it all just falls into place as he's playing. He can improv and be thinking well ahead and putting together these quick time puzzles between the standard times the others are playing in instead of counting.
Matt Garstka=PR beyonder
Alex Rudinger=Thought Robot
Xenochrist or "the march" at the meinl drum festival is a good start!:D
"The Brain Dance" by them live on Dunlop Sessions is absolutely phenomenal
Matt garstka, metronome of the universe
Three tracks came out by "GEM", I guess it's promotional and Matt sessions with 2 other brilliant players it blows my little mind heh! Search for "crazy tweaks" "vertigo" and "torque" ... sponsered by Meinl cymbals I think.
Even more impressive than that fill to me was the grooviness of the tom fill that came afterwards
He's playing polymeters with himself lol... He's not really all over the place, he's keeping two different time signatures going at the same time.. At least that's how it seems to me.
Madness of Matt..
I hope the next reaction to an Animals As Leaders song is the Dunlop Sessions version of The Brain Dance. That song is frickin' immaculate
If you're checking drummers this week, here's drum cam of The Ocean's drummer playing their new single Jurassic: ua-cam.com/video/hWtckYkufao/v-deo.html
He just missed the cut for the week. We'll get him on the channel eventually though. :)
Point to point is a short one that I like. Also, the woven web and another year.
Matt is a destroyer of worlds on drums.
If you want a good video to watch the whole band play Lippincott, check out their Guitar Center video. Tosin also talks a little bit about where the song kind of originated from. ua-cam.com/video/3UqlXHE56r0/v-deo.html
Garstka is a beast, no doubt.
I've posted this on a few videos now and I'm determined to keep repeating it: check out some Car Bomb! Gratitude or Vague Skies would be good starting points. If you're into this kind of complexity you will enjoy them, and Elliot Hoffman is one of the few drummers out there who's on Garstka's level, but way less well known.
Car Bomb is one of my most requested groups. We'll get to them eventually :)
Caligula's Horse - Salt
Matt is a beast, but about having the time stone, check out some Virgil Donati stuff, especially with On the Virg
You shoul check out -overtime by knower (live band sesh)
The main riff is in 11/8, but Matt is superimposing 4/4 on it with a backbeat. Completely bonkers.
Bro you need to listen to the madness of many by aal. The drums on that album are wild
it would be sick if you reacted to messiah complex by haken! Such an amazing song imo
In the sense of him feeling time just *different*, he really reminds me of Marco Minnemann.
I'll have to look him up. Thanks!
@@CriticalReactions he was the drummer for Porcupine Tree's frontman, Steven Wilson. Maybe check Luminol ua-cam.com/video/E3MpGBwGdVk/v-deo.html , I think it was particularly relevant in this case because it generated a lot of build up towards his first major solo album (for the previous 2 his solo career was still a side project) and Minnemann was the drummer. I think you'll really enjoy it, it has some Yes vibes.
6:54 is my reaction every time Matt goes off
Jia - amass (featuring Casey Sabol, Matthew Gartska)
Check this one out sometime
Meshuggah or Betwen the buried and me, crazy drums hahaha
It'd be cool to see your reaction to the live performances of "Iris" or "Kepler" from Matt's side project, Victoria. It's just him with one guitarist.
Matt and Larnell Lewis are the two drummers that I listen to that just melt my brain trying to comprehend. I feel unworthy of calling myself a drummer listening to them
Pls react to Petrucci recent solo album. Temple of Circadia track and the entire is indeed what instrumental world needed. This track reminds me of the awesome chemistry of P etrucci and the ex DT drummer Mike Portnoy and seems like this had to be featured in the Systemathic chaos album., the one with the perfect mic between drumming and guitar.
If you love this one, PLEASE check out Ectogenesis by AAL.
I suggest Breaking the Broken by Control Denied to reaction.
Oh boy, if you want your mind being blown, you should react to School by Bobby Jarzombek
Hey man you should check out Torque by GEM. If you're looking for excellent composition, GEM has everything you're looking for! You'll see Matt at his best.
Tooth and Claw drum playthrough.
While this band I'm going to suggest is a little... intense, the drummer for Car Bomb is without question the holder of the time stone, but he also carries the chop stone. Beware, you are entering into no mans land with this band
Blake Richardson parallax: 1 drum through? Good sir
"WHERE'S ONE?"
Matt is fucking jacked now
Seth Angerer-Kynikos. You'll LOVE it.
3:35 My reaction to every AAL song lol
