It is an alright focal length, I use the excellent Zeiss Loxia Distagon 21mm 2.8 T*, used together with a 35mm Lens it is perfect. I did use the 21mm together with the Sony Zeiss Sonnar 55mm 1.8 T* ZA for a whole day in a very large city doing street photography, I needed a compact and light weight set of two cameras and two Lenses. I often use the 21mm for Nature Landscape photography.
Hi,I have never tried the 20 mm focal length, but it's true that it's very interesting for many purposes.
Maybe, in interiors a minor focal length ( 16-18 mm),can be necessary if you want to show a room in one photo.
¿ Do you think the colour performance of the Viltrox lens is good enough?

I prefer wide primes over zooms as you a dedicated to that focal length and make it work, with a zoom your always guessing if you at the correct focal length half the time

NOT everyone needs this lens. Depends on your style and type of photography. I would recommend it to compliment an a7c for example for light travel or street shooting.
I sold it as I constantly used my sigma 16-28.
My normal lens is 21mm, it gets used about 90% of the time (people, street, architecture).
Great video, currently in the process of moving to full frame (yet to buy a camera) but looking at lens options this was really helpful!

I new I had to get a 20 or 21mm lens about ten years ago, when I bought 'Sieff' a great black and white book of Jeanloup sieffs fashion photography from 60s-70's,
he stated he often only took his 21mm on his leica to challenge himself, unreal pictures

Great video Gerard! The sample photos throughout mixed in were very helpful in showing its capabilities when used right. My current widest lens for my A7C is the Samyang 24mm 1.8 and so far I feel its wide enough for my uses. For $150 though... i may have to pick this Viltrox up -especially since i love how small it is. Cheers mate
Yeah I’m also still using my samyang 24mm f1.8 and I love it, it’s so light also.
The viltrox 20mm f2.8 is a great lens to pick up as it’s cheap and a good way to test if you like 20mm or not
Great explanation and reasons given :) although I'm curious, on the a6700 which lens would you pick (for roughly the same focal length); Viltrox Full Frame 20mm f/2.8 OR Sigma APS-C DC DN 23mm f/1.4?

Some very timely advice. Thanks. I have just WON a copy of the Viltrox 20mm f2.8, and I notice that your main camera is the same Sony FX30 as mine. Is your video advice based on that APS-C camera? I would certainly like to be able to use the new lens, when it arrives at a v-log type distance.

I’m looking to shoot in a studio, I tattoo brows, fine line tattoos and I’m stuck between 20mm or 24mm. I already purchased such an expensive body and have been holding off the lens 😢 I need sharp close ups

Your best to get a 50mm macro lens that you can get some close up shots as well as good environmental shots.
This 20mm would be a great lens for showing off your space and the 50mm would be great for showing off your work.

What about sony 28mm f2 compare with the viltrox 20mm f2.8? Which is better in AF low light and sharpness?
I haven’t tried that 28mm yet and im keen to test it.
Sharpness isn’t the only thing that makes a good lens btw

Get the viltrox 13mm f1.4 for APSC (links above) that’s a 20mm after the crop factor
Using the Viltox 20/2.8 on the A7CR - can crop it easily to a 30/4 and everything in between.
Case well made and illustrated, Gerard. No sweat!😊 My visual “field of view/attention” tends toward focal length that’s not quite as wide - more like 35 to 40 on FF. Viltrox lens star of vid looks like a super value, though - worth adding to tool kit. Cheers!
Yeah I can’t stop shooting at 40mm ahahahah I love it too much, but like the 85mm I always need a different perspective 10% of the time and this little lens has been great!
Good talk about wide angle lenses. 50mm and above are not like toys whereas wide to ultrawide lenses are play toys in the photo/video world to exaggerate to make a point. And they are fun, as you said. I have always loved wide angle lenses. It's as if more of the world is in my viewfinder.
What do you think about the Sony SEL24F28G in comparison to the Viltrox 20nn f2.8?
That’s not a full frame lens it’s for APSC, so you would get a 30mm ff field of view on APSC.
It’s full frame.
I love my sigma 30mm 1.4 and 16 mm 1.4 don't know if I should get this one.
24mm full frame is a great lens, 20mm is even more fun

I really don’t see how it’s click bait when I explain why you should consider a 20mm and why you should look at this compact 20mm as an option.
@@gerardneedham no no no listen...we all know that no one needs this 20mm...but you want to make sure people watch at your video instead another so you put this "dramatic title" so people get curious to understand why this lens needs to everyone??? What's so special in this lens that everyone's must have??? Nothing. It's a 20mm focal length lens. So....camon...you and other UA-camrs...try to make more natural content instead to be one the copy of the other one
