I've never thought about the fact that Knuckles' first interaction with another person (who wasn't one of the little animals on Angel Island) was Eggman. His first impression of society was manipulation and betrayal. Heck, he might have previously had the same ideology as Sonic for all we know. His "fight first, ask questions later" mindset could also be linked to that encounter with Eggman. In hindsight, Knuckles could have kept the Master Emerald safe by immediately taking out Eggman. Maybe he "learned" from that experience and decided to eliminate any potential threats before they have the chance to become genuine ones. He's just such a tragic character. Sure Shadow went through a lot, but at least that was in the past and he has freedom. Knuckles is just screwed. He is stuck guarding the Master Emerald until it (and Angel Island) are destroyed, a group is formed to protect it, or he dies. I love his character so much.
Both him and Shadow are loner types, but they’re such opposites. Knuckles was always alone, while Shadow became alone due to loss. Knuckles got duped by Eggman, while Shadow tricked Eggman. It took a long time for Knuckles to become a full member of Team Sonic, but Shadow had almost immediate cohesion with Rouge and Omega.
It's weird how the introverted lone wolf characters appeal to me a lot more when the series is all about friendship and teamwork, Knuckles is one of my favorite characters in all of media, then Whisper is my favorite comic character. He's just a man trying his best to do what he thinks is right in a situation he'll never fully have all the answers to, who can also punch the superpowers out of people, that's just so cool to me.
I like that both Sonic and Knuckles are rewarded for following their paths, neither is bad in their ways. That's why it bothers me that Frontiers tries to remove Knuckles from his guardian title.
Great character analysis. Not many people truly understand Knuckles and are quick to attribute his blunders to lack of intelligence when it's really his ignorance and him having trust issues, which totally makes sense when you remember he's been alone for the vast majority of his life and the one time he meets and trust someone from the outside world they betray him and nearly destroy his home and the Master Emerald. Things he devoted his entire life to protecting. I also like how you highlighted how Sonic & Knuckles are polar opposites which explains why Knuckles usually works alone while Sonic is usually around his friends.

Knuckles does work best alone for a while, but then, in later games, I believe he works best with others. It feels to me like character regression if they're keeping him isolated. In IDW, he just decides to be stuck on an island after fighting Metal Sonic without any build-up. Also, Sonic's ways often win out. You'd think Knuckles would learn a thing or two while being cautious.

That is probably why Shadow has such easy cohesion with Rouge and Omega. Or with Eggman in SA2, where he not only wasn’t tricked, but he actually earned Eggman’a full respect and trust and he tricked Eggman himself. In contrast, Knuckles fell for Eggman’s sob story and butt heads with Sonic long after the incident, instead of fully trusting Sonic.
I would like that he finds out more about his echidna kind like in Sonic Chronicles. But alas, we may not get that because of one hack writer had to ruin it just because the echidnas of said game were based on his and he got into a hissy fit (yet he’s fine with ripping off other people’s work).
I never figured i would relate to knuckles, but i kinda do in some ways. I’m introverted, i often feel like i don’t fit in, lack a sense of belonging or a connection to others, even tho i have my online friends and family, i don’t have very many friends IRL, so i often feel lonely. I have a strong sense of justice, I’ll always try to stand up for what is right. Sure, I can be a little too trusting of others (Like Sonic in a way) but that’s just because I have trouble seeing red flags. Luckily i have family and friends to help me with that. I often spend time alone, and while I wanna go and socialize with others, that’s easier said than done. It’s incredibly hard to find people who you can relate to and connect with, all the people I’ve talked to IRL are great, but I don’t feel a connection with them very much. I still struggle with a lot of things. Procrastination, being independent, and dealing with anxiety, self doubt, and insecurities. I’m an optimistic person, but even optimists get anxious. Anyway, I’m excited to watch the knuckles TV show, it looks great! I know it’s gonna be a fun time
The sonic series does a really great job portraying different personality types that we can relate to in some way or another. I hope that like Knuckles you can find ways to overcome your struggles of self doubt, anxiety, and insecurities. I'm rooting for you! And yes the Knuckles show is going to be a blast!

I'm torn. On one hand, being alone suits him and his story. On the other, I love when he's involved and I would love to see him grow beyond the bearing the weight of the responsibility of guardianship.
You know. As much as I do want Knuckles as part of the group, part of me also agrees Knuckles is best as a lone wolf. What I liked about Knuckles despite the whole controversy with he was portrayed is that he was a strong yet reasonable fighter. Sure he was aggressive, but unlike say Wolverine or Ralphael Knuckles wasn't an angry brawler. He has wisdom and is smart. Part of me feels Knuckles could work best by having him reunite with the Chaotix since they starred in a spin off. Another thing is that I Knuckles is the most interesting of the cast backstory wise. Yes we had learned the downfall of the Echidnas, but I wished to learn Knuckles when he grew up. Especially his childhood. Out of all the rivals Knuckles feels the most underappreciated. Metal, Surge and Archie's Scourge were rivals who were struggling to find their true identity as a clone to Sonic. Metal wanted to be the true Sonic because he believes he is. Scourge wants to prove he's more than just an Alternate Universe of a evil sonic. And Surge is struggling to find her place because her only purpose was to end Sonic as well as dealing with the loss of her previous life. Shadow is a foil to Sonic who has to deal with the past. Sonic is freedom and the will to enjoy life. While Shadow has to prioritize that he isn't free. He's stuck in the past and dealing with the struggles. Yet just like Sonic he learns he must not just live for his late friend Maria, but live his life. As for Jett from Sonic Riders, he's what Sonic could've been had he been a prideful person without a heart. Jett is a brat and manchild and even if Sonic can be a jerk at times he doesn't hold the same pettiness as Jett. Knuckles isn't a person who prioritizes with identity or being an egitistical wannabe. While he does support the past like Shadow, but unlike Shadow his is more subtle. Knuckles is alone, he is destined to protect Angel Island no matter what, and also that is his life purpose. At least Shadow is living his life but as an Echidna its Knuckles priority to save the Master Emerald. Which is why I wished we had a Knuckles spin off where we learn more on Knuckles. Especially his jobs besides guarding the Master Emerald. Just like how in some entries in the franhise such as being a treasure hunter or protector of nature. I'm sure his tribe had different occupations he prioritizes. And that's why I appreciate Knuckles. As a kid I never related to him and thought he was a meanie. But as an adult I understand Knuckles is like us. Sonic represents us as kids and teenagers. Wanting to do what we all want to do. But Knuckles represents us growing up and realizing in life some of us are limited and we may not get the same choicee. Though with the help of others just maybe we can just live.
Okay I really feel like you don't really understand Sonic as a character I understand why you would be confused because Ian Flynn keeps writing him as a hero. Sonic is not a hero he doesn't do what he does because he's Noble he does it because he feels like it, he doesn't let Eggman or other villain live because he's forgiving and wants to give them a second chance, it's because he enjoys their battles and the Chase.
Knux has always been my fav sonic character, i was insainly dissapointed when they made him look like a dumbass, thank god we are getting is original self back
