  • From Ennis we hit the towns of Whitehall, Butte, and then Helena. On the way the timing and circumstances worked out so I could be in a nice dark, cloudless, open area on the 2nd peak night of the Perseid meteor shower!

Go for it! Depending on where in the US you live you can make short trips at first to test our your setup and gear. Once you get in the groove doing it for longer trips gets normalized and becomes less worrisome.

looks like someone having a well earned Margarita. I like Cows, they’re a bit dirty though. Bet you’re glad you did not choose to cowboy camp though that night. In Santa Barbara on the mountain tops above, we were photographing Andromeda with a 8” telescope for Class at Brooks Int. Just standing around in the dark and a meteor of Copper entered the atmosphere with us being the projected path. I was a beautiful intensely bright green and I wasn’t were weren’t going to die. But it did drop and burnt out in the area of Vandenberg Launch area. I also went to photograph a Vandenberg launch on that same rock, and I watched lift off on the horizon and the rocket enter the clouds, then it didn’t pop out of the clouds and began falling back down out of the clouds, and they detonated it. Then the funny thing going down off the mountain the radio said that Vandenberg had called off the previously scheduled launch, that was a good laugh.

I drove up to Paradise at
Mount Rainer a few years back to watch the meteor showers. Amazing!

I bet! Before I went here I checked the light pollution maps but lights from Helena still bled through. I'd like to somewhere even darker. I remember Paradise being super dark! It was where I got my very first Milky Way photo. Good memories there. I was also hoping to see a bear along the Skyline Trail at night but nothing.

This years Perseids didn't seem to be as busy as last years. Beautiful night shot though. Then again all of your camera work is Awesome.

I've heard the Perseids are getting less active every year. Kind of a bummer.

Been thinking the same thing past few years @@JayWandersOut . Then again Perseids is just a dust trail that Earth just happens to run into every year. Like the saying goes: "Timing is everything".

Watch "Mr. Sunshine". Beautiful, and unfortunately cry-out-loud sad.
