The difference is Ken Freeman was a talented composer and pioneer of the use of synthesisers and most of the 'composers' of today are bedroom DJ's . Not in the same league. That's why this will always sound better i.e. the original 1986 session. The BBC was also staffed differently in those days by people who had worked their way up through making programmes. Now it's all gone a bit crazy and political so most of the programme decision makers are inept and driven by 'isms' rather than creative talent.
This is the original opening title theme grafted onto the later recording of the end title theme. The original commercial release mixes both the original 1986 Main Title and End Titles together for one long track. The BBC also had a stereo version of the 'epilogue' motif (the horn and guitar bit you hear before the end titles) that was used on some episodes. I think the original version was the best recording.
I actually grew up watching this as a child and loved the drama, seeing actual realistic medical stuff going on enlightened me as an emo child, then all of a sudden I started getting repulsed by it when I became a tween, I remember realising that the stuff that was in this show could happen to me in the future and then I got all scared, who else? I'm ok with the show now though, it's a classic, cool.

The latest version is weak, thin sounding. I often wonder if they dare say "No, go back and try again" to the composers who rehash it.
