  • I've always found this topic fascinating when it comes to modern game collecting. After learning more about some of the potential limitations regarding game patches, downloadable content, and required internet connections on modern physical games I've found my methods for collecting have also adapted to go along with the changing times.
    Does knowing whether a game is complete on a cartridge/disc matter when building your video game collection?

      Actually in Japan the trend goes to: Buy the game digitally and get a empty case with the cover via post services. Even Nintendo offers this service in JP

      I can see this being the case for Sony (& Microsoft apparently is already out of the complete physical game for the most part), but I have high hopes that Nintendo's next console will continue keeping physical games alive for a little bit longer.

      I highly doubt it. Physical games are still very much in demand and they are a large chunk of these game publishers revenue.

    Another great and informative video Emily. Honestly you can't even trust a "Definitive Edition" game to be complete anymore, even if they have all the DLC on the disc I feel a lot of them still have a patch download at some point. I've gotten so used to downloads just kicking off when I go to install a game. I was shocked to find out the PS4 Ratchet & Clank was all on the disc. I generally assumed that my internet or PSN was down 😅lol

    Prior to delving into this myself about a year ago and subsequently becoming a lot more vigilant, a large portion of my collection went unchecked sadly. I’ll have to be content with the many games I own that don’t have the most recent patch (though I did at least try my best to pick up physicals that can be played offline since I began collecting). The big issue is monetary: trying to resell my incomplete versions/find a reasonably-priced upgrade for limited print games can be very difficult and expensive. It’s worth at least trying though! C’est la vie
    Super hot take - I wish companies would just hold physical releases until a complete version can be produced on cart/disc, since the digital vs. physical split across the industry is pretty much 80/20. It may take 6+ months after release depending on how quickly the devs find issues, but it’s pure logic for physical collectors and preservation. I believe many would be okay with the wait for the trade-off. Hopefully the collectors that want to play Day 1 will understand and be willing to compromise. The nature of game development today makes it especially hard to guarantee a complete game on release day, so a wait period is essentially baked-in across the industry. Thanks for this stellar info Emily!

    • @jasonsumma1530
      @jasonsumma1530 Рік тому +1

      This would be ideal but reality would say that it is near impossible to test for every possibility in a reasonable time frame. I suspect there is a list of common game issues which companies check for but there are probably scenarios where it takes five or six things to line up just right to trigger.

    • @orbalology
      @orbalology  Рік тому +2

      Yeah there are a few games I'm not entirely certain I'll 'trade-up', like you said it can be a bit of extra leg work that may or may not be worth it lol.
      And yeah given how most physical games are not arriving in store/via the mail on day 1 anymore, I wouldn't mind waiting a little bit longer for a more complete package. Though I'm sure this may delay sale numbers which publishers wouldn't want, especially for the AAA titles. I'm glad at least a few of those indie print publishers have been trying to achieve this, even though a few releases have had their issues.

    • @BespokeSlipp
      @BespokeSlipp Рік тому

      @@jasonsumma1530 True, there’s so much that goes into great code! And what orbalology said regarding publishers wanting as much money up front as possible is also a big factor. I wish there was a clear path for content-complete physicals, but I’m happy with whatever companies can accomplish in a reasonable time-frame…as long as they put in an effort and don’t crunch the devs.

When there's no other choice or when I don't think the physical version is that great😂 Like you said, you never know what will happen to digital versions in the future. With physical you can have different types of packaging like steel books or boxsets which add to the fun. There are many places around the world that don't have internet. So I hope they never get rid of physical entirely.

    Having games on the physical media is why I've been enjoying my switch a lot because it brought back the plug and play that I was used to growing up, going to a newer xbox (the one X) was wildly different in the wrong ways, pretty disheartening so I returned it and got a switch on sale. Its great to see sites that also tackle problems with games that even include full games on the disc/cartridge. I really hope nintendo keeps that trend in the next system and I really hope that maybe xbox or ps moves to cartridges as prices for storage gets cheaper and cheaper.

    So glad I stumbled upon this video! I absolutely didn't know about any of these resources... I sometimes find myself looking to buy the 1.0 version of a game because of unpatched glitches (useful for speedruns and challenge runs) so these lists are also very useful for quite different reasons!
    Also the doesitplay site is probably going to be sooo useful... Square Enix has consistently been the worst publisher at this (even across platforms). They save pennies with incomplete game cartridges or codes in a box (outside of Asia at least) and then splurge hundreds of millions on NFTs. These clowns make my blood boil sometimes.

    Hi Emily, thanks for the recommendation of Does it Play, but I wouldn't put too much stock into anything that says no updates required, because I decided to just do a search of some games on there and what I've realized it that it doesn't consider the performance, just if it works.
    What I did specifically was due a search on some pretty egregious releases on the PS4 that needed patches are otherwise the performance imo are just unplayable. I started with the Pathfinder games which they didn't test, so I then searched for Little Big Planet 3 which is listed. Whilte LBP3 states that no update is required, without patches the game will crash repeatedly by the time you even complete the first world.
    However, I searched for another game, Alan Wake on the PS5. This is another game that crashed several times before the end of the first chapter(five actually.) This one is listed in no in yellow and does explain this occurance. This game also has a day one patch.
    So while the website may be of partial assistance, it doesn't inform the player if there are any patches and it doesn't inform of all games that have performance issues. More of a "the game works" sort of thing and that's it.

    Thanks for all the resources! I can’t imagine someone picking up a used copy of No Man’s Sky or Cyberpunk years from now and not even being able to play anything close to what those games are right now. I completely understand the mindset of buying the PS5 edition as opposed to just upgrading the PS4 version, as that’s also what I’m planning to do for FF7R and Witcher 3.
    This online era is somewhat mixed for me as it’s great that they can fix game breaking bugs, but at the same time it feels like a lot more games are being pushed out with them, making them unplayable without the patches, and then also what am I supposed to do with a physical copy of Overwatch now?

    I think this sort of thing is a lot better than it used to be. I remember when PC games could be a nightmare because not only did you need to find patches but they were very specific to the build of PC you had. I had lots of problems with the older Tomb Raider games on PC to get them to run (this is quite some years ago). Especially Angel of Darkness I had to borrow a PC to play it as my much more modern PC wouldn't play it. This of course a thing of the past now. Regarding Xbox you really have to have a constant internet connection to play games on them since the Xbox One (and now the series x). You can play some games offline but there are many drawbacks to doing that. Also for older Xbox games (ie 360 or earlier) there are many games that will only run on the original hardware they were made for. If you are lucky you can purchase a digital only emulated version (ie backwards compatible) but this is only the more popular ones. Whether you can still get the patches need for the more rarified physical versions though is rather hit and miss.

      That's really disappointing to hear about the modern xbox systems 😞 And you bring up a good point about the older PC games.

    Hi Emily, stellar content as always.
    In my experience the only company that try to release the most complete games inside the cartrige is Nintendo itself.
    There's are a very few third parties companies that release their game without the requirement of download any critical content so the game can work decently. Sadly this is the reality nowadays.
    Also something I don't like about companies with their Switch version of their games is that they rather to go for the cheapest cartrige, the ones with small storage, because the big ones are very expensive to produce, so the rest of the content must be downloadable.
    A clear example is to compare different versions of a game. For instance. Spyro Trilogy, or Bioshock Collection, The Resident Evil Collections or the future release of NMetal Gear Solid Collection Vol. 1. Is ridicously the poor content that we get inside the cartrige. Ther'e no logical reason why buying a Switch version of a game is more expensive than a PS4 or PS5 version.
    This is a couple of reasons why I stopped collect a lot of multiplatform games on the Switch.

    • @orbalology
      @orbalology  Рік тому

      The thing with a few of those download required cartridge games is that they eventually moved to a code-in-a-box, like the bioshock collection. Really such a waste of plastic 😅

    Cold Steel 1-2 have issues with mist and similar effects on the PS4 Pro. The normal PS4 and PS5 doesn't have this issue. It's not game breaking, but there are crazy FPS drops that anyone will notice. It only affects a few parts of the game though. It's fairly easy to transfer save files from PS5 to PS4 though, so I will definately try on the PS5 next time I play CS2.

    Just to clarify. When you put FF7R PS4 version in your ps5 you DO NOT need to play the ps4 version. You get an option to only download the ps5 version. At that point, you just have the ps5 version on your console that you can access ONLY when you have the ps4 disc in like a key. I've played both the ps4 and ps5 version on my ps5 with no issue, so I have a feeling that issue is few and far between.

    Thank you, Emily, for sharing this. I just checked my Octopath Traveler's code in cartridge (it's 002) and compare it with Crisis Core (which is 000). And yes, there's a 700MB+ update on Crisis Core vs 100MB+ update on Octopath Traveler. Interesting, but there's no way to know that from looking at the case, right..😶

    I've been getting back into PS3 lately and I upgraded the internal storage (160GB to a 500GB MX500 SSD). So I was inserting each of my discs and downloading any updates they had and doing any partial installs. I guess I'm just conditioned now to expect updates, so it was surprising to occasionally find that there were no updates available for a game, I _think_ 'Resistance Fall of Man' and 'Enslaved Odyssey to the West' had no updates.
    Although reading online, it looks like the only digital version of 'Resistance' added dual shock support (launch title, before the they settled the controller patent lawsuit) and updates for that game were through a now defunct multiplayer server (?), rather than Sony. Add that to the list of problems with modern-ish games,

    A topic I’ve never thought about. Until you mentioned it in a previous video I had no idea that there were updated cart releases. I guess my plan is just to make sure I download all updates and do backups before servers go offline. This is why I soft modded my PS Vita and PS TV and just loaded everything onto SD cards and made sure all patches were downloaded then backed up the SD cards.

    It is very good to know all these things for example Remothered in the west published by sedesco doesnt have the game fixed bug like the Japanese double Remothered published by 3200. There are quite a few factors right now. Heck going all the way back to greatest hits on ps2, 3, and so on had bug fixes and even extra content. Also I think it's neat that I can kind of play both versions of the game and see where the bugs are and what they are and what was wrong with the game and everything
