    Just ordered a rad mini 4 and this video greatly reduced my buyers anxiety. I'm 235 lbs and all the other reviews seem to have a 113 lb person talking about how durable it "feels" after a 3 mile test drive. Keep up the good work!

    Great review! Answered my question on why I was getting some noise from the rear spokes lately...

      Thanks for the comment! Yeah, I’ve found that these bikes need a little TLC from time to time so make sure to stay on top of it.

    I have this bike too and ride it almost every day. I saw your last update video as well. I just replaced my tires today after just under 6000km. My knoby tires I wanted to replace when they were as low as yours in your last video, but I kept riding until the rear was basically bald. Didn't notice any performance issues doing that. It was actually a little better since there was more rubber on the road. Just had to be more careful in the wet. My front tire still isn't too bad with wear tho. Just the rear was gone. I weigh around 170, but all the weight is still more on the rear.
    I have had no real issues with mine overall. A lot of people say they had loose spokes, but they tightened literally everything to max strength on mine. I had the hardest time getting the rear wheel off since the bolts were so tight. The palms of my hands are actually bruised I had to use so much force on the wrench for so many attempts before they even budged lol.
    I had one flat only from a perfectly placed sharp stick. I patched the tire without taking the wheel off and never had another issue. I run mine at about 18psi. I just put on the Kenda K-Rad tires which are a bit thinner at 3.3". They are kind of a cross between the knobby and the slicks. Rolling resistance is lower, but they still have good grip as I ride on dirt roads and grass here and there. The smaller width takes some getting use to. It rides more like a bike and less like a motorcycle now, but still similar to before with the 4" wide tires.
    I agree with the fenders. I didn't wanna get them due to the cost, but they were well worth it. I would be soaked if I didn't get them. Even dirt and grim would coat you if you didn't have them. Glad they include them on new brakes.
    I think for the price it is a great deal. It can do everything very well. The plus is it folds too.

      Glad to hear you're getting some distance on your bike, 6k is awesome! I now have the newer radimini 4. I am working on putting a video together to compare the 2. I should hopefully have it up in the next week or 2.

    The maintenance issues you described are typical of all bikes, just a little more frequent because of the motor assist. Rear bike tires always wear faster they get the most weight and wear.

      @MatthewBechard  3 роки тому +1

      All true and I think I figured out some of the reason I have the center tread wear. I believe it has a bit to due with me running the knobby tires at 23-25 PSI which is a little higher for this tire. More air means less of a contact patch while rolling.

    Excellent review!!! I have the Rad Runner, and am very satisfied with it. Will probably get the controller/display upgrade from Bolton sometime in the future, just for fun. As you, I am satisfied with the power as is, I am all about pedal assist vs throttle only. Good to hear the Mini can last all those miles without any major problems! Keep up the good work!!!

      So far so good, a lot of “issues” I’ve had besides the wheel drama has been maintenance and I have learned along the way. If you’re going to use the bike as a commuter every day then you need to be able to work on the basic stuff. Thanks for the reply!

    FYI the motor is a 500W with 750 peak. Deceptive rating.

    • @MatthewBechard
      @MatthewBechard  3 роки тому +1

      You are correct based upon the research videos I’ve seen on this hub motors. The hub motor appeared to be labeled as a 750w but if you pull out the internals they are consistent with a 500w motor. With that said a lot of ebikes put power to the ground in different ways pending what controller they use and how they are programmed. The measurement that should really be used in my opinion is how much torque does a bike have? There are a lot of 250w mid drive bikes that put down similar torque to 750w hub motor which means for normal usable power they are equivalent. The watts really come into play when you talk about top speed which may or may not be of interested to most ebike riders.

    Great presentation. Thinking about buying one. How far can you go using pedal assist only and the throttle only?

    • @MatthewBechard
      @MatthewBechard  3 роки тому

      When I ride, I ride almost exclusively in the highest power setting. I honestly don't ride the bike much for leisure so when I do ride it is to commute as quickly and safely as I can to/from work/home. I have gone on a few rides for range and with using mostly power level 2 and 3 I got a touch over 30 miles. Your weight and how hilly your terrain is will dictate the range a lot so keep that in mind too. I'm on the rad owners facebook page and there are a lot of people that have said they have done over 50 miles on a single charge using pedal assist 1 and 2.

    Is this a good bike for a middle aged guy to ride on nature trails? Some mountain trails? That's what I want to do, not so much streets

    • @MatthewBechard
      @MatthewBechard  2 роки тому +1

      I would recommend getting a different set of tires if you’re buying new. The Rad mini 4 comes with a semi slick tire that would not be good for gravel or wet surfaces.

    I’m 5’9” 235 lb 63 yr old ,stocky am , I at the bikes limits , should I just buy full size bike and not deal with the spoke problems

    • @MatthewBechard
      @MatthewBechard  3 роки тому +1

      Thank you for the comment. The spoke issue is more of not keeping the spokes tight rather than being too heavy. Also the type of terrain you’re riding on will play a factor too. Off road riding will be a little rougher on the bike in general.

    Hows the fold part? I would like to be able to bring it into an establishment where i sit down and spend some time, i know i can lock it up but paranoid of theft, this is coming from the midwest part of the country

    • @MatthewBechard
      @MatthewBechard  2 роки тому

      The bike is big, unless you have a good decent corner it would be in the way. This isn’t something small like a brompton where you can store under a table in a coffee shop.

    Have you tried playing with the rear tire pressure to help avoid spoke damage?

    • @MatthewBechard
      @MatthewBechard  3 роки тому +1

      Thank you for the comment. I honestly have not tried adjusting the PSI in the tire but I don’t think it would make a difference on the longevity of the spokes.

    • @MatthewBechard
      @MatthewBechard  3 роки тому +1

      With the stock seat post 6 foot tall would be the max in my opinion. You can always get a longer post which will give an extra inch or 2, just a FYI.

    Spokes are also a question of quality. RAD purs low quality. Quality has its price. Calculate price and time and you will find out that RAD are overpriced Chinese bikes for the parts and quality they provide.

    • @MatthewBechard
      @MatthewBechard  3 роки тому +1

      I don't disagree with what you're saying. With that said a Rad bike is much more obtainable for the masses and I would argue that a large portion of the buying group with a Rad tend to be tinkerers. They will do the minor tune up stuff on their bikes and for myself I have learned a lot about basic maintenance. I still plan on getting something a little nicer and capable of carrying my daughter safely, my eyes are on a Tern GSD.
