    Another fantastic video even though 5 years ago. Beautiful work and I love the trick with the mini drill grinding wheel. Never seen that before.

      Hi Nick,
      I apologize for the late reply. Thank you very much, indeed! Although it came out pretty good, I must say though the arrengment of the stud on the top slide can't give the best clamping abbilities and that is because the top slide dosen't has a T-slot to hold the stud. As for my Proxxon grinder, it copies in a way the work of a milling machine (that I don't have).
      All the best

    You obviously took a lot of pleasure making your tool post installation exactly to your liking. Another fellow might locktite in a factory stud as good enough but in a home shop you set your own standards. However 1045 is excellent fastener material as it's low in cost, is readily machined up to Rc 35, is ductile enough in the annealed state for cold forging, and may be heat-treated to any of the standard fastener grades save those intended for elevated temperature service.
    Polar alignment of the holder to the compound's sliding axis might seem convenient until tool orientation to part feature is concerned - ie: threading tool flank symmetry to pitch cylinder. 40 postions has no convenient increment at 30 degres compound angle.
    Another point is choice of reference surfaces: the as heat-treated face of the holder is never employed as an abutment. The tool shank contacts the lower ledge and back wall of the holder and thus must be considered as reference and location surfaces. The dip in the face you pointed out is likely an artifact of heat treatment distortion.
    I love the accuracy, repeatability, and convenience of the Mulitfix pattern QCTP system. I've used most versions ever manufactured over my career and never once found loose-ness or inaccuracy except in rare instances of 40 years of hard wear and abuse. My personal tooling is based on a "B" set marketed by Enco in the early I '70's and added to via auction finds and Asian import holders. All interchange and repeat to small tenths.
    Whether Mulitfix, Aloris, or some other QCTP system is superior seems to be more a matter of partisan opinion than objective merit. I've used most but I've come to favor the Multifix because of Its 40 position feature. If I want to quickly change the tool lead angle for better chip control I can increment the holder angle without disturbing the orientation or dial settings of my other tool holders. Outside of that one feature, all well made QCTP systems have about the same accuracy, rigidity, repeatability, and durability. But it is that one feature - indexibility - that inspired me to commit to the Multifix system for my home shop.
    My only downcheck for the Multifix system is the difficulty in making DIY tool holders. The spline is a real challenge for a small shop unless you have some form of reciprocating tool shaping capability and part indexing. My solution was an "E" shaping head on a Bridgport mill and a rotary table. It worked well if I was careful but in general it was a PITA to DIY Multifix tool holders.

      Hello Addy,
      I apologize for the late reply. Thanks for your comment, I really appreciate it!
      You are right about the 1045 steel, it has excellent properties. But at that time I haven’t realizes that and convinced from a friend to use harder steel that can stand better the cutting forces, anyway now I know.
      Many viewers suggested me various ways for the alignment of the holder and I tried them all. I didn’t found bigger differences than 0.01 to 0.02mm, so I consider that is quite ok for the tool and the size of my lathe. And yes, it is impossible to set it to 30 degrees for thread cutting.
      Although that isn’t the original Swiss made Multifix, I do like its accuracy and repeatability. The only OCTP system that probably would make me change the Multifix is the KDK system, unfortunately it’s very difficult to find one plus that I don’t think that was ever come in small size to fit on mini lathes! And yes, it’s very difficult to make DIY holders for the Multifix, in my case simple impossible!!
      Thanks again for the comment and your time to watch my video.
      My best wishes to you and yours for the New Year!

    I just rigged the same thing up on my D180x300, but I didn't find it necessary to make a whole new post. I just bored out the main gear looking thingy to fit the top slide, and drilled out the top stud that came with the quick change tool post (it looks like yours already fit though). Being all clamped down by the nut on top means it's never going to move.

    • @JimmysCanal
      @JimmysCanal  8 років тому

      Hi,
      Please forgive me, but it was impossible for me to reply sooner!
      The only thing that actually made, was the stud. And I made that because the Multifix tool post didn't had a matching one for my lathe and the stud from the quadruple tool holder was too high to use it.

    I got my TU 2004V with the 'Multifix' factory installed. I think it cost 45euro in labor. Really enjoying working on it. Nice little machines. Only gripe is the cost of the tool holders ... yikes

      Yes I know Createtool, they have also a shop on ebay. Unfortunately they don't have any tools for sale?? I think someone can contact them only on their official web site: www.createtool.com/
      My humble opinion is that Createtool makes quality Multifix replicas for all the major lathe manufacturers and simply print's their logo on the body of the QCTP. Thanks again!

    The measurement you did actually measured your tool holder alignment to the top slide movement. You are assuming that your top slide is travelling parallel to the ways of the machine. Better would be to mount the indicator base on the machine bed ways and move the whole carriage to measure the tool holder..

    • @JimmysCanal
      @JimmysCanal  7 років тому

      Hi,
      I apologize for the late reply. Some other viewers suggested to measure inside at the holders back where the cutting tool touches. I tried it and the measurement was pretty much the same with what I had measure the first time. Anyway, thanks for your suggestion!! I haven't thought of it and definitely I'll try it and as I think it, probably is the best way to have a more reliable measurment. Thanks again for the suggestion!

    What does the side of the holder have to do with it? Shouldn't You measure against the cutting edge of the tool? To look for parallellism and/or any taper?
    I would put the indicator in a tool holder and check it against a test bar...
    Anyway - good explanations in a nice video! Thanks, Erling in Oslo.

    • @JimmysCanal
      @JimmysCanal  10 років тому +4

      Thank you very much for your comment Erling! You are right!
      Perhaps I should have looked for parallelism inside, where the tool bit touches at the back of the holder?
      But it hasn't so much of run out anyway, only 0,05mm at the center of the holder as you already see in the video (please remember that I followed the instructions as the manufacturer shows in his technical sheet)
      Until now I haven't do any adjustment of the crown gear and the holder works perfect at any angle especially at the two basic 90° angles (parting and boring)
      Thanks again! All the best.

    For that little short toolpost that's threaded all the way down in you could use any kind of metal any kind of steel I should say I can't see there being any kind of flexing in that short amount. I would just use 4140 I've never even heard of Swedish steel

    At around the 7 minute mark you turn the bolt to fit the hole very precisely, then later you bore that hole larger. Very puzzling.

    • @JimmysCanal
      @JimmysCanal  8 років тому

      Hi,
      Yes, it is a bit puzzling because I forgot to put some pictures with measurements. If you go on 3:44 you will see that after I remove the stud from the top slide it remains a small round metal piece (this is part of the casting and has 17.96mm diameter, I forgot to put a picture ). The crown gear has a hole at center with 13mm diameter (I mention this at 5:14), but I also forgot to put a picture with the measurement. So, I bore the center hole of the crown exactly 17.98mm x 6.58mm depth, go on 17:04 to see. I’m sorry for that.

    The run-out across the face of the tool holder doesn't really matter, I think if you are going to index the tool holder then it needs to be done at the back face where the tool bit butts against. or the tool it's self

    Hi Jimmy,
    I'm wondering if you could get the "factory fit" part from Optimum in the first place so that you don't have to machine the part to make it fit?
    I'm asking that because I have d210-400 form optimum and its qctp is quite expensive. If your scenario is usual in industry and it is always expected for us to modify parts to fit even if supplied by OEM then I might as well look into non Optimum sources of qctps.
    Thanks,
    Bruno

    • @JimmysCanal
      @JimmysCanal  8 років тому

      +Bruno Batarelo
      Hi Bruno,
      Thanks for asking! The tool post can’t be fit right away to the lathe (only if you order a new lathe and a QCTP to the supplier, then the factory adapt it for you) for your lathe it's the SWH-A . Because this belongs to accessory tools the manufacturer gives a data sheet with info and mounting instructions to do it yourself.
      Check this link: www.createtool.com/ these multifix clones are not have any difference with my QCTP, they must be modified also to fit on your lathe. I think that even if you buy another type of QCTP like the Aloris you will need to modify it to fit on your lathe, because of the design that the top slide has on all the small Optimum lathes. I hope you find a good quality QCTP in a reasonable price without to need to modify it.
      Thanks again

      Ευχαριστώ πολύ για το σχόλιο σου Λεονάρδε, το εκτιμώ!
      Αν έχεις τον κλασσικό 4πλό εργαλειόδετη που έχουν οι περισσότεροι τόρνοι όταν τους αγοράζεις τότε η λύση είναι απλή, κάτω από την μανέλα βάζεις λεπτές μεταλλικές λάμες (δοκιμάζεις διαφορετικά πάχη) μέχρι να κάνεις τον σωστό συνδυασμό ώστε η μύτη του κοπτικού να είναι ακριβώς στο κέντρο της τόρνευσης. Να έχεις υπόψη σου ότι κατασκευαστικά οι 4πλοι εργαλειοδέτες έχουν πάντα 3-4mm μεγαλύτερο ωφέλιμο ύψος στην υποδοχή των κοπτικών έτσι ώστε βάζοντας λάμες να φέρνουμε το κοπτικό στο κέντρο της τόρνευσης, αλλά και λίγο πιο κάτω όταν αυτό είναι αναγκαίο (κοπή σπειρωμάτων, εσωτερική τόρνευση).
      Αν τώρα σκέπτεσαι να αγοράσεις αυτόματο εργαλειοδέτη σαν αυτόν που παρουσιάζω στο βίντεο, θα πρέπει να δεις εδώ: www.createtool.com/list.asp?cid=33 πιο μέγεθος είναι κατάλληλο για τον τόρνο σου. Βάση του περιθωρίου των 16mm, νομίζω πως το κατάλληλο μέγεθος είναι το Α: www.createtool.com/article.asp?id=55 συνιστάτε για τόρνους με δυνατότητα διαμετρικής τόρνευσης από 150mm-300mm. Αυτό είναι το link για το μαγαζί που έχει η παραπάνω εταιρία στο ebay: www.ebay.com/usr/createtool_china και αυτό είναι το link ενός Γερμανού πωλητή με μεγαλύτερη γκάμα σε εργαλειοδέτες και αντάπτορες: www.ebay.com/str/pewetools . Επίσης μπορείς να επικοινωνήσεις με την αντιπροσωπεία της Optimum στην Αθήνα: store.dk.tools/ και να συγκρίνεις τιμές.
      Μπορείς επίσης να δεις για αυτομάτους εργαλειόδετες όπως είναι οι Aloris, Dorian, Dickson κλπ. τύπου με πιστόνι η σφήνας. Ελπίζω η παραπάνω πληροφορίες να σε βοηθήσουν. Καλή συνέχεια!

    it looks like you need to tighten the Gibs in your compound the way your indicator is wobbling when indicating square on the new toolpost.

    • @JimmysCanal
      @JimmysCanal  10 років тому +2

      Thank you very much for the comment!
      The gibs was tightened properly. Another viewer pointed this also by saying that I should had look for parallelism, indicating on the cutting tool. So I did another test to check for parallelism by indicating inside the tool holder (I checked all the holders that I have), where the cutting tool touches at the back. I found that, with careful positioning and tightening the crown gear of the tool holder, I have a little less than 0,01mm run out at the center of the holder, I think that this is acceptable?
      Then I made another test, this was for check the squareness of the holders. I took two solid steel squares, the first was a common 3'' DIN 875/2 and the other was a 3'' Starrett master square. I was surprised by the results; all the holders have an issue with squareness!! this explains the 0,05mm run out on the first indication at the edge of the holders. Honestly, I didn't expect that a pricey tool could has a finish like this, anyway I must live with that!
      Thanks again for your comment!
      Cheers

      ***** Funny, I was watching that flutter on the indicator - not knowing that the divisions were 0.01mm - and I thought that it was picking up on surface roughness.
      Given that the edge you were indicating on is not really critical for the function, a finish roughness of 0.01mm (0.0004") harms nothing but the appearance of the part. And, the concavity of the center of the part of 0.05mm (0.002") doesn't bother me too much, since the ends are true to each other.
      I've worked with older US made machines that aren't that true in the functional areas, and could still make good parts.
      I found the Optimum brand machines for sale here in the US, and they are priced as if they were made in Germany, not just routed through Germany from China... You definitely would expect more for the asking price...
      Cheers,
      Eric

      chemech Hi Eric, Thanks for the comment! Definitely agree with you. The finished parts are exactly as you described on your comment!! and it not bother me, but always it remains the question "I paid so much to buy a tool, why isn't ok"

    • @chemech
      @chemech 9 років тому +1

      Hi Jimmy,
      It seems like fit & finish are no longer priorities these days...
      I'll guarantee you that the Chinese manufacturer was not paid enough to care all that much, and yet it gripes us to pay EU or North American prices to get a less polished article...
      And don't get me started on paying made in USA prices for files made in Mexico & India... The importer ended up apologizing to me and the retailer who sold me those particular files!
      Although, their replacements from their Mexican factory did turn out OK...
      So, it's not that imports are necessarily low quality, just too many importers who no longer care that much about their products... :^(
      Glad that your QCTP has turned out to work OK, even if the fit & finish isn't all that you would desire...

      Hi Eric, again your are right when you say
      "So, it's not that imports are necessarily low quality, just too many importers who no longer care that much about their products"
      also applies the big companies issue they don't pay enough to the Chinese, Mexicans whatever the country from, because the only thing they want is fast easy money!
      Unfortunately sometimes we can't do anything about this because we don't have any other option.

    Nice job installing the toolpost, I have the same lathe and was thinking of doing the same upgrade. I had planned to use the size up (A) but note the smaller one you use (Aa) is a lot cheaper. Are you happy with the smaller one or would you now advise the size up.

    • @JimmysCanal
      @JimmysCanal  4 роки тому +1

      Thank you very much for your comment Mark, I really appreciate it!
      When I bought mine I didn't have many options on choosing between the two sizes for various reasons - but I will not stay on that because it will take long to explain.
      I'll say that I am satisfied; I think that the Aa size is perfect for lathes like ours and smaller ones like the Sieg C2, C3. What I call a short of ‘a problem’ with the Aa size is the fact that it can accept up to 12mm cutting tools, meaning limited variety on indexable tooling; now, with an A size toolpost you can choose among a wider variety of 16mm indexable tools, but using them must be with care since the lack of power of the lathe can't hold the cutting pressure will created, (higher speeds and feeds as well higher chip loads, otherwise these tools they will be dragged in the part instead of cutting it).
      Without been the expert here, I'll say that it will be wise to check the following links to see the measurements for the Aa and A tool posts - the Aa definitely fits on the lathe, but I don’t know for the A size:
      www.createtool.com/article.asp?id=41 Aa size
      www.createtool.com/article.asp?id=55 A size
      I think that if the A size fits and not been very big in size for the top slide, it will be nice only because you will be able to use some special 16mm tooling that they can do external face grooving and turning or external turning and grooving only by changing inserts.
      Again all the above are just my opinion and not by any means must be taken as expert knowledge!
      Here are some sellers you can check for prices: www.ebay.com/usr/createtool_china
      www.ebay.com/str/pewetools
      I hope that all the above will be some kind of help.

      Hi Barry,
      Forgive me for the late reply. The lathe is made by Optimum Machines: www.optimum-machines.com/ and the model is D180x300. Now the company have changed the code number of the model and upgraded a bit. The new model is Opti turnTU 2004V: dk.tools/pdf/OPTIMUM/opti%20lathe.pdf
      Optimum Machines has a plant in China and most of their production are made there.

      Krispin Gord it's a german company that has their components made in china and then they do the final assembly in germany so they can say "made in germany" on them. the performance of the machines is of course largely operator dependent, however i would not recommend buying them: short lifespan and mediocre quality. not worthy of the "made in germany" stamp.
      in order to make them work well and live longer than 3 yrs under normal use you would have completely rebuild the machine, put in new bearings (non chinese) and tighten the backlash in the gearbox.. then you might have something..too much work and expense considering the purchase price

    • @chemech
      @chemech 9 років тому

      HolzMichel Well, I found their US Distributor is Grainger - not known for being a low-cost provider...
      For the 7x14 (180mm x 355mm) size, the price is about 3x what I would have to pay Micro-Mark or Little Machine Shop - not discount suppliers, but not the high markup places either...
      Thing is, for $700, I'm less concerned by rebuilding the machine after 6 months of daily use ( a particular project, and much more intensive use than the machine was ever intended for) - when the plastic high-low selector gear shattered... The Chinese bearings on the SIEG are a size commonly used for motorcycle forks, and the Japanese replacements were cheap, so I did them at the same time...
      If only the darned headstock casting wasn't so tiny... a really tight place to try to work!
      Cheers,
      Eric

      Gracias por tu comentario mi amigo, ¡realmente lo aprecio!
      Ahora, antes de continuar con cualquier compra, es importante que sepa el tamaño apropiado de QCTP para su torno; para hacer esto sigue este enlace: www.createtool.com/list.asp?cid=33 es un fabricante con sede en China (creo que Createtool suministra QCTP en la mayoría de las marcas de maquinaria poniendo sus nombre en la herramienta). Ahora, el enlace anterior abrirá una página con todos los tamaños disponibles de postes de herramientas y soportes de herramientas, desde el tamaño Aa hasta el tamaño E; haga clic en "MÁS" para ver datos técnicos y parámetros para cada tamaño.
      Por ejemplo, mi publicación de herramientas es de tamaño Aa; Los datos técnicos están aquí: www.createtool.com/article.asp?id=41
      No sé si puede comprar directamente desde sus sitio, pero puede hacerlo fácilmente desde sus cuenta de eBay: www.ebay.com/usr/createtool_china
      Compruebe también este vendedor de eBay (con sede en Alemania): www.ebay.com/usr/pewetools Tiene una selección más amplia de tamaños de postes de herramientas y soportes: www.ebay.com/str/pewetools
      Espero que estas informaciones sean de alguna ayuda para que encuentres lo que necesitas
      Saludos desde Grecia

    That sure is an expensive tool post. Anyway one thing that I don't understand is why are you doing the modification? Shouldn't it just fit the lathe right away - out of the box?

    • @JimmysCanal
      @JimmysCanal  10 років тому +1

      Thank you for the comment!
      The tool post can’t be fit right away to the lathe (only if you order a new lathe with this QCTP, the factory adapt it for you). Because this belongs to accessory tools the manufacturer gives a data sheet with info and mounting instructions to do it yourself.
      So I turn-out the hole at the bottom of the crown gear based on the instructions,
      as for the stud that I make, is because the old was too high for the new tool post.
      Jim.

      Seem like Optimum hasn't changed their attitude toward customers, who is so stupid to buy something you have to finish themselves? Or the design of the lathe is flawed if customer can't use accessories right away? I ordered Wabeco, and no I don't like their Multifix holder, I like AXA germany one. And believe me if I have to maschine something like this after 300Eur for holder I better return it and get the aloris toolpost

    • @chemech
      @chemech 9 років тому +1

      ***** I think that it's because Optimum buys the lathes from one manufacturer in China, and the toolholders from another supplier over there.
      Here in the US, the SIEG 7" (180mm) lathes from China are very popular, and the A2Z QCTP is an affordable Aloris style toolpost which is a very popular add-on. I do not recall needing to do any modifications to mount mine... (These lathes fill the niche which used to be the domain of the old Atlas/Craftsman 6x18 lathes.)
      The Chinese aftermarket wedge-type QCTP in the 200 size (BXA) which I fitted to my Chinese import 9x20 (230x500) required some fettling work.
      The funny thing is that the 200 size QCTP only required a custom T-nut to fit on the compound of my 12" Logan lathe built in 1954...
      Thing is, we have the tools to make the tools, and a little bit of work to make sure that things fit up correctly is just the price of doing business if you want to get the best performance from your machine(s)...
      Cheers,
      Eric

      chemech Hi again, here in Greece things are different. We don't have suppliers like - Little Machine Shop and Micro-Mark. There are suppliers who have tools for big machine shops and they import only a few things for small machines like mine. So it's one way, we must buy directly from the distributor (always expensive) or from a US shop. When I was looking to buy my QCTP, I saw the A2Z or the small version of the Aloris type, the 0XA. But the price of the tool+shipping+Greek customs, it was equal to the price I found here for the Optimum QCTP sad but true! Anyway, we must live with that.
      Thanks again for your comments!

      Hi Jimmy,
      I can understand why things are different in Greece - politicians everywhere have a tendency to pass laws with unintended consequences...
      And, our machining hobby is probably not something they would even conceive of as a possibility...
      Still, I'm a bit disillusioned that within the EU you have difficulties in getting affordable stuff...
      I've seen a few videos with Metafix - or clones - QCTPs, but they cost us as much here as they do over there it seems - ~$430 - about 3x what my A2Z ran here...
      Best of luck in dealing with your local conditions, and congratulations on the high quality work which you are producing!
      Eric

      Thank you for the comment! I apologize for the delayed answer, I was away from home for a few days and just now saw your comment.
      It's an excellent lathe tool post with great advantages, but personally I could work with any type of QCTP. The only problem for me is the fixed shoulder with the stud that is on the top slide of my lathe. If my top slide had a T slot it would be perfect, I would had better control on the clamping force of the QCTP as well as more positioning choices. Thanks again for your comment!

    Great video! I have a 65x65mm base for my toolpost, what size multifix would you recommend? The Aa or A? :) I'm in a dilemma, the entire length of the lathe is about 1000mm, so its a small one, but i am worried that the Aa is a bit too small in fact :/

    • @JimmysCanal
      @JimmysCanal  10 років тому +1

      Thanks for your comment Luka!
      It's difficult for me to say! To choose the right size tool post for your lathe, first you must know the center height of your machine (meaning you have to measure from the top of the vee way of the bed up to the turning center) or else to know the max. turning diameter (swing) of your lathe. The second is to measure the height from the base of the top slide (where the tool post sitting) up to the turning center. For instance my lathe has 90mm center height, 180mm max. turning diameter and the height from the base of the top slide to the turning center is 25,5mm. As far as I know the Aa size is suitable for lathes with turning diameter from 120 up to 220mm and the A size from 150 up to 300mm. Check these links: www.createtool.com/ www.createtool.com/article.asp?id=41 www.createtool.com/article.asp?id=55 you will find the technical data for the Aa and A size Multifix tool posts. Hope that helps you?
      Thanks again.
