I carry a 342PD everyday. My philosophy is also along the lines of this is what I always got with me. Pocket holster and i'm done, unless i'm doing a lot of driving or riding than on the hip is better. I also factor into statistics. I see no reason to carry 2 lbs of weight everyday while taking pains to conceal a large gun, when in the end if I ever had to use a gun for self defense either just a show of the gun might save me, or at most 2 shots fired. The J-Frame really is the best all around carry gun for every average person.

I sport a Sig P320 now, but my previous carry gun was a Model 66, the 642's big brother. I just liked the extra round and the .357 capability. I agree 100% with revolvers being great carry pieces. The reliability, safety and simplicity of them is very desirable for people who carry but don't want to make the care, maintenance and operation of a gun their life's work.

I carry my 642 most days. It's a great revolver. Mine has the crimson trace and I use a DeSantis pocket holster. Very comfortable in front pocket. Only 15 ounces. Winter time I carry my Glock .45 Good video!

I have lots of guns, have to agree with you. In the middle of the night and you hear a noise, nothing to think about, just grab and go. My gf can grab it and just pull the trigger, nothing to thonk about. One other point,a lawyer told me this is the best gun to have from a defense in the court point of view. Revolvers dont look mean, jack web and kojak had a revolver. Double action means no hair trigger and a prick lawyer trying to guess your motives when you cocked it.

Very nice review of the 642! All the sentiments that you conveyed regarding this revolver are all excellent points. I honestly believe that this revolver is the ultimate carry gun (and this is coming from a person who owns several semi-autos). Couldn't agree more on the statement that you made saying that if one is only going to own one gun, this is it.

I have two and I'm giving one to a family friend for a first gun, I'm sending them your video because you do a better job explaining why these are so great. I've had every little carry gun under the stars and I keep going back to these j-frames.

I have the same carry gun I love it, the only thing is the finish came off after about two years so what I did was I took 1000 grit sand paper sanded the gray finish off use mothers polish and polished the aluminum to a highgloss finish it is beautiful

I really like that front sight on your j frame..I have always loved wheel guns, I actually have a snub nosed k frame with bantam grips that isn't that much bigger than a j frame but you get an extra round 6 vs 5 and the added weight makes recoil slim to none even with the hottest load you can come up with in 38 spl. If I could only have one handgun it would more than likely be a good quality 38/357 revolver. great video.

I've got a little Smith Model 36 that I carry around the house. I use an Uncle Mike's inside the pocket holster with it. I also have a five shot speedloader in my other pocket. I have owned that little pistol for years; and yes, I would trust my life to that firearm. When outside, running errands, I will carry my little revolver. Other times, I will either carry my Colt Lightweight Commander in 45 acp; or my Glock 19. Nice revolver that you have. New Sub!

Great video. Through the years, I've owned (and still do) quite a few Chief Specials - M36, M637, etc. but I've never owned a concealed hammer model. Think I'll go out tomorrow and buy one!

J frames are great. My favorite is the 60 with a 3" barrel.
How well do the Safari grips secure it to the belt or waist band? Could you run or jump with it?

I concur. The 642/442 airweight snubnose J Frame revolver is the ultimate ccw. I carry a 442, but I'm partial to the look of black guns. I replaced the synthetic boot grips the gun came with, with a set of the classic wood stocks like on the Chief's Special you showed on the video, and painted the back of the front sight with white model airplane paint. I carry in a Remora holster, usually aiwb, sometimes pocket, and occasionally owb @ 3 o'clock.
One thing that you said concerns me. Carrying the way you do, and especially after the trigger job, nothing protects the trigger from unintentional engagement.

How did you get the Big Dot sight on your 642? I'm assuming that you would have to get a gunsmith to mill off the original sight and cut a channel for the Big Dot, yes?

He's short-stroking the trigger. Releasing it enough to engage the hammer again but not far enough to index (rotate) the cylinder.

I got the same gun it's a tough gun to shoot for a beginner the trigger pull is very heavy out of the box....As far as those grips what perfects the trigger for a beginner I recommend a holster for every gun.....There are a lot of guns I would choose before this one for a beginner.....I'm not saying that this revolver not good it's a great gun but for a beginner no way would I recommend it..

I'm a gun novice who started with the 642 because of it's simplicity; however, it's a very snappy handgun that is not much fun to shoot, making my early experience unpleasant. I'm much prefer the Glock 26.
