    Algebra I on Khan Academy: Algebra is the language through which we describe patterns. Think of it as a shorthand, of sorts. As opposed to having to do something over and over again, algebra gives you a simple way to express that repetitive process. It's also seen as a "gatekeeper" subject. Once you achieve an understanding of algebra, the higher-level math subjects become accessible to you. Without it, it's impossible to move forward. It's used by people with lots of different jobs, like carpentry, engineering, and fashion design. In these tutorials, we'll cover a lot of ground. Some of the topics include linear equations, linear inequalities, linear functions, systems of equations, factoring expressions, quadratic expressions, exponents, functions, and ratios.
    About Khan Academy: Khan Academy offers practice exercises, instructional videos, and a personalized learning dashboard that empower learners to study at their own pace in and outside of the classroom. We tackle math, science, computer programming, history, art history, economics, and more. Our math missions guide learners from kindergarten to calculus using state-of-the-art, adaptive technology that identifies strengths and learning gaps. We've also partnered with institutions like NASA, The Museum of Modern Art, The California Academy of Sciences, and MIT to offer specialized content.

    Sal, you are the absolute man, I mean it. You came up with this idea for a free online school for anyone, and look what you've done with it! Amazing. I am very impressed sir, and I appreciate it! One question: When will I actually be able to get a post-grad degree in Math on KA? Peace man.

    what if the slope = 0/number

    • @tubeblack35

      That would be a slope of 0, a horizontal line. Not to be confused with a vertical line or undefined slope.

    Some of the language used here is completely different to that used in British schools, confused me for a bit

    • @martyspandex
      @martyspandex 9 років тому +1

      Alex Jones What parts in particular?

    • @AlexJones-ei9dt
      @AlexJones-ei9dt 9 років тому +1

      For example we never use the "point-slope" phrase to describe the y=mx+c, we would just say it's the simple form for the equation of a linear graph

    • @AlexJones-ei9dt
      @AlexJones-ei9dt 9 років тому +1

      martyspandex also we would just say "gradient" when describing the slope, although that might be a simplification

    • @Dr_Durrani
      @Dr_Durrani 8 років тому +2

      that's just British vs US, like use using analyze vs analyse... hope you understand what I am trying to say :)

    • @martyspandex
      @martyspandex 8 років тому +1

      I have only just read this reply.
      He is not using the point-slope to describe y=mx+c; he is using it to describe another form of a linear equation which has the 'point' and 'slope' contained in it. It is a lot clearer using the point-slope term when referring to this form of the linear equation in virtue of having the point and slope in it. There are several different forms of the linear equation: point-slope formula, the slope-intercept formula, and the standard form of a linear equation. All these names inform what type of linear equation it is, so we can use the appropriate one with the information we are given.

    That's a great explanation you made us all understand but the -8 is suppose to be a +8. It's finding the difference between the 2 points so it would be 9-1= 8

    • @SidyWidy

      you don't always have to do both points on the graph you can do either one and it would still be the same equation if you did it for (6,1). even if you did both problems you would get the same answer for both equations.

    Perhaps a more efficient way of determining the equation of a line given two points is by using a method from Vedic Mathematics. Using this method, we can determine the equation of a line from two points immediately without the need to write any down besides the answer. The method is as follows: given two points (a , b) and (c , d), determine the equation of the line going through these two points. The solution is as follows: (a - c)*y = (b - d)*x + (ad - bc) The method is fast and efficient. What do you think?
