Great breakdown as always. We definitely need more of these. Dave damn near an honorary black man at this point, lol. Another get together after the first few issues of the new lines have dropped would be great. At the end of the day the Krakoa era was great, didn't end perfectly but definitely tried to wrap up all the the story threads that were presented initially. I think a lot of us just got in our head that Hickman was going to have this real long drawn out story for us, but by all reports by the man himself...doesn't seem like that was ever really on the table in the first place. But it was an overall great collaborative effort (kind of like this podcast lol). Lets just hope the next age can be just as good if not better. I think the gauge will be the next X-men event. If the new line doesn't hit....we might end up going back to some of these krakoa era elements faster than we think.

As a fan who just started reading again after X-Men 97, I'm still enjoying the hell out of the early Krakoan era, even knowing how it ends. I got full body chills reading X-Men #7, even having seen a third of the issue out of context - nothing can take that from me.

Hickman was once asked if he knew what they were going to do with Moira after his Inferno. He said NO. I rest my case. And I am also disappointed with him too. Every time Marvel(since HOX/POX) announces a new project from him, I am thinking "yeah right he is going to bail after 5 issues, so why bother?"

Missing out on some good hickman material for a silly reason if that’s true.

My experience reading the Krakoa era comics is very similar to OME’s - attracted by the (naive) thought that all plot threads and themes will eventually come together, but ultimately learning the disappointing truth that creativity and narrative completeness were not the principal driving force behind these comics - corporate decision and collaborative politics were far more impactful.
I am also sad about how certain interesting themes were so under-explore, when they have the potential to make this story not just a great super-hero series, but an epic science fiction/ fantasy story as well:
way of x: religion and the value of life
sabretooth (as blerd also mentions): inequality and the rule of law
sword: politics based on resource monopoly
x-men red: national trauma and identity
x-force: the moral issues faced by intelligence agencies
Most of these were internal issues faced by the Krakoan nation. To me, a more satisfying ending would be one tackling these internal issues, rather than facing an external big-bad. (which is why I like the idea that cypher should be the big-bad: he represents far more of Krakoa’s internal struggle than an AI god outside of time and space)

Hey, you seem like quite the clever fellow, so I figured I'd offer my (late) thoughts on a particular aspect of Ultimate Invasion that I haven't seen discussed in much detail in the lead up to The Ultimates. I thought you might appreciate it as an analysis, or have your own, unique perspective to offer at some point.
So in Ultimate Invasion, I believe Issue Four, I think Earth-6160 Reed/Doom says to Howard in response to asking about the Doom Mask The Maker gave him, "No. He's been very clear about that. The mask is no game at all. It's who I really am." Which made me wonder, within the context of Ultimate Invasion, what led the Maker come to that conclusion.
Eventually after thinking on it and a little inspiration, I believe that while there are other factors that separate Reed and Doom, that the lengths they SEEM to be willing to go to is likely a significant one. Reed 616 seemingly understands that the world is not his to rule or bend to his whim and seems to respect it, as well as those who inhabit it. Believing that certain things are too-
Wait, I just remembered, the fact Reed is seemingly a leading member of the Illuminati, who, to my knowledge, are all about making decisions for the sake of the world as well as going farther than most heroes would be able to. I think that kind of ties into it. Since on multiple occasions in Hickman works, I believe it has been shown that Reed is willing to make larger decisions for the world or others, believing he is worthy of being judge, jury, and executioner, along with whomever he sees fit to serve on the jury. The presence of the Illuminati in issue #1, as well as his willingness to erase the Maker in response to The Maker asking if Reed would wipe the Maker out from existence if he had the chance, could be argued to parallel Doom making choices pertaining to Battleworld with a council of his own choosing and serving as judge, jury, and executioner.
And if Reed, one of the supposed greatest heroes of the multiverse, is willing to make those kinds of huge decisions while ultimately being considered a good or decent person, why should The Maker be considered or behave any differently? And at that point, what makes Reed different from Doom in any significant capacity? He seems to have enough of an ego to think he's worthy of making those kinds of decisions, and he seems to follow through with them, making the line between them likely insignificant to some...probably including The Maker.
At that point, well...I suppose you could say Reed Richards is Doctor Doom...if he wore...a MASK.
Which leads me to the conclusion that the Doom mask not only represents who The Maker thinks Reed truly is, but also the fact that the seemingly main difference between him and Doom...is that Reed hides it.

i like to focus on the great development so many characters received during this era. Some great runs like Hellions, x-men red, etc................Moira although not handled perfectly was such an intriguing character............Beast going beyond dark................The whole Arrako stuff................... all the hellfire galas. ................ The dominion stuff and yes i loved the sins of sinister. the 4 separate attempting for dominion to realize they are all feeding the O.G. into Dominion i think was inspired. ........... Dark X-men was short but good. ............... x-factor was also a great run.
Did everything land perfectly. no. but a lot of the bits in between were awesome.
p.s. a thought about the beast going dark. ...... i find it thrilling that the ""good beast"" we will now be following is not in fact the beast we have known our entire lives. Similar to the we now follow is not the one weve always known. To me this is so neat as i love characters that go bad and these 2 iconic heroes true forms will never be seen the same ever again.
That being said. It will forever be an opportunity missed. Now wether Hickman wanted to leave or was pushed out. We will never know the end of his symphony. But he still layed so many seeds that did pay off. And will continue to pay off for the rest of time in future ways.

I hope the biggest take way from the Krakoa era is that each line within Marvel has a writers room where every writer is aware of what the others are doing so that the whole line has the same direction. I'd like to see this implemented in the Avengers line specially

The Fall of X was screwed. And they didn't even deliver the final issues to my LCS! I still remember the good points in X-men, X-men: Red, and Immortal X-Men. I think with at least the rules and the Ultimate Universe 1660 there is so much potential there. I think that the new X-Men by Mackay (June), Uncanny X-Men by Gail Simone (Aug.), and Exceptional X-Men -Carmen Carnero- in September. There is the sourness, but there also so much potential. I agree though. What was the factual truths behind the scenes on how the story played out. Very curious on that! Get an interview with the writers and Seth. But all hail House of X/Powers of X, all hail Marauders, All hail Legion of X (bring it back, eventually, please!) I'm a Simon Spurrier fan, obviously! Adn rock on Open Mick Eagle!

Great job guys! Fun talk with proper critique of Marvel and its cynical cycle crumbling under the weight of continuity and talent leaving. Krakoa was awesome overall and I very much enjoyed Krakin' Krakoa streams. Plus you can just go back and read the HOX/POX collection and enjoy that for what it was.

The Krakoa era of X men was definitely refreshing change mutants being the underdog and opressed to being a political power. Overall it was a 7/10 Jean getting the Phoenix and Marvel finally tying those two as one was great imo.

You know what bothers me most about the Krakoa era? I don't think Cyclops and Beast interacted once. What about Warren and Betsy/kwanon? After a certain point they never showed Logan with either Jean or Scott (they really wanted to push Jean and Scott). Logan has few interactions with his kids. Storm was kept pretty isolated. There were a lot character dinamics that were wasted or ignored
