- Ever since House of X and Powers of X rejuvenated X-Men fandom in 2019, one of the most consistent questions I've heard has been "What are the essential comics of the Krakoa era?"
After a near 5-year journey, that's a lot of comics, and not everything is vital to enjoying and understanding this fascinating era of X-Men. So, I've set myself the task of selecting the 10 collected works that best summarize the Krakoa / Hickman era of X-Men, and provide the most invaluable contributions to the grand metanarrative and overarching plot.

About Comic Book Herald:
My name's Dave, and Comic Book Herald is a labor of love designed to help new, lapsed, and curious comic book readers explore and enjoy the wonderful world of comics. I've been developing reading orders, chronology guides, and detailed comics recommendations since late 2011. Comics can be confusing and intimidating; I try to help. - Розваги
I wish you'd make more short videos like this. 15-30 minutes is the sweet spot.
I agree, these shorter videos are way better. Do both the long form and the short ones please.
I used your guides to get back into X-Men. It not only helped me crawl out of a negative right-wing grift rabbit hole athiest youtubers dragged me down in the mid 2010s, but It gave me something to drown out the depression of lost family members.
Wow that's awesome to hear! Comics (and Dave) are great
As a new reader, this is overwhelming. I want so much to get into this world, but this is a lot. I've only read a few X-Men comics, and of course, seen the movies. Thanks for the recommendations.
Agreed, just starting to get into collecting full runs, and yeah same I’ve only read like the books from the 80s
Great list as always Dave!
Well done!
Thx man. I was looking a guide to the best stories to cut some of the others. To me it's not a problem the amount of reading, but as an high schooler I'm on a very strict budget.
Great list dave. I personally would have swapped hellions for way of x / legion of x / uncanny Spiderman. Seems more crucial to krakoa. Also they are amazing series (mostly).
You missed Hickman's new Mutants issues are not in his omnibus... They were great and important to the cosmic element of his story.
Are these in order of reading order (starting with House of X and powers of 10)? Or are these just your top 10 picks that can be read in any order? I’ve never read an X-Men comic and I’d like to find a place to start and get caught up! Thanks for all the great guides :)
yes these are in the correct reading order except for one
for the comics at Number 5 (Al Ewing X-Verse) you read *SWORD* before Hellfire Gala (No. 6) and *X-Men: Red* after Inferno/X Deaths (No. 7)
Personally, I wouldn't do a most recommended book, instead I would do most recommended writers:
1. Jonathan Hickman (obviously, head of X)
2. Gerry Duggan (marauders, X-men, essentially head of X post hickman, from a certain point of view)
3. Benjamin Percy (x-force / wolverine / fall of beast)
4. Tini Howard (betsy braddock / excalibur)
5. Al Ewing (space & Arrako)
6. Keiron Gillen (eternals & immortal x-men - AXE)
7. Si Spurrier (everything nightcrawler)
8/9. Ed Brisson / Vita Ayala (New Mutants)
10. Zeb Wells (hellions)
Top 5 X-Men Writers of Each Decade would be great.
tini howard's only alright and important for excalibur and somewhat relevant on knights of X, past that though the rest of it can be pretty much ignored and don't really impact the rest of the krakoa setting unless you really want to see a lot of sucking up for betsy's character.
Gillen was crap. Man couldnt write himself out of a bag.
No xforce? No sins of sinister? No inferno?
what are the other 2 books you didn't recommend lmao
Sabretooth and Ayala/Reis New Mutants :)
No Si Spurrier-verse, which means no books that explain Mother Righteous. Oof, that's a tough choice.
Also no Vita Ayala 😮. New Mutants vol 3 where Magic turns over her realm to Maddie Pryor is right up there with Hellions, and more important to the continuity than most of X-Men Red.
Dark Web X-Men has the most emotional moment during the Krakoa era where Jean Grey and Maddie reconcile. It's Gerry Duggan's second best work during Krakoa era, and a key moment in continuity.
The immortal Xmen broke me, too much sniffing one own farts.
I still hate Marvel for not following Hickman's original plan 🙄
🙄
Hickman's X-Men was a mid tier run. I trust the man who gave us Immortal X-Men to land the plane.
I believe we know by now it wasn't as simple as scrapping his plan and more of there wasn't a solid plan in the beginning in the first place and Hickman is there to revitalize various parts of Marvel not just X-men
Hickman’s the one who left lol. How are you going to follow the outline of the person who jumped ship? Some of the best content (immortal, x men red) came after Hickman left
hickman left them since he wanted to do his own thing, not much they can do when he probably just gave some vague ideas on the direction of the story if he stuck around.
“Fascinating era of X-Men” hahahaha
Conceptually? Absolutely. In execution? It left much to be desired...
"Essential Krakoa Comics" is an oxymoron.
Krakoa was the worst era in X-men history. The X-men went from being an analogy of prejudice to narcissistic a-holes.
Awful. The only stuff i buy is great covers. The Art Germ Emma Frost stands out. Loving Peaches Ultimate X as its as far away from this as possible.
You can't honestly expect people to believe these books are any good, right?
Yes he can, because despitecwhat some anti-Disney grifterscwould have you believe, these actually sold quite well.
@@LikaLaruku HOX/POX sold well and some of Hickman's early run, but the rest? Absolutely not. X of Swords? A v X E? You're going to claim those sold well?
@@illithidloreThe proof would be on you to show what was selling and where Xmen land among it.
Cant honestly expect me that you could prove such a simple thing.
We don't all want to read the claremont run for the 100th time in a row. The franchise needs to move on and try new stuff, be bold. The Krakoa era has kept the X-Men alive so yes, those stories have fulfilled heir purpose.
