Hourglass from At the Drive-In's 1998 album In/Casino/Out recorded live in studio in July 2021 - originally aired during Half A World Away Global Stream
ATDI without Jim Ward is like Led Zeppelin without John Paul Jones - you've literally lost half the band. Out of every rendition of this track I have heard throughout my life, this is my favourite version. Jim, you're a hero. I'll work with you one day.
This song always reminds me of an old friend who took his life in 2011. He was quite a good street artist. One night, we were at the pub drinking together, and he asked me what I would write if he handed me a spray can. My response was, "I wish I was astronaut." I told him it was a line from this beautiful song. He thought that was amazing. We had planned to go down to the beach and paint it in a big mural along the foreshore. Sadly, we never got that chance. Thank you, Jim, for writing such amazing music. I miss you El 🚀 🖤
Same here dude. This song always brings me to tears with along with some of the best memories of my best friend and all the great times we had recording music together.
I love ATDI but after they broke up I realized the most influential part of ATDI was always Jim. I value Sparta, Sleepercar, his solo projects even more then what ATDI means to me. I am from Las Cruces and I have been your neighbor and fan my entire life. I've shared beers and laughs with you at Hope and Anchor and I know ATDI and Sparta are just bands but your music helped me grow up. Thank you for everything Jim
I had a chance to see atdi in NY but they cancel the show minutes before they were supposed to go on. I am really glad they did, because it’s not atdi without Jim Ward. Glad to see him doing what he loves to do.
Sometimes a song hits you at a moment in your life where it becomes a part of you and your own story. This is definitely one of those songs for me. Arguably my favorite ATDI song.
I always called this song the first sparta song. It took a long time to realize that it was jim singing lead on this one. But that being said it shows how much cedric and jims voices belong together... it sucks that they cant find a bridge to make that happen any longer. My band just lost our bassist because he couldnt handle we werent heavy enough i guess. I still dont know how to deal with it. With him we were the most synergistic band ive heard in a long time. How does one go on?
Sucks me in, taking a ride And I'm wishing for the satellite Grabbing vein pulling down on the radio Laughing at the face that's bending down I'm all alone so far up here And my oxygen's all gone Bend the metal My glory box has failed We're rocking in our reclining chairs Drive away that car That brought us all this harm Those are the pieces of my story line I'm all alone so far up here And my oxygen's all gone Truly stressing realization I wish I was an astronaut Eight hour bitterness all for whose sake Stain glass Sunday school charades
A lot might be said of past drama concerning Omar and Cedric, but one thing has remained consistent, Jim Ward exhibited class and took the high road. The Mars Volta might be my favorite band, but I would much rather share a meal with Mr. Ward. Seemingly a genuinely good hearted guy. Oh, and El Gran Orgo and Inter Alia/Diamanté pale in comparison to everything involving Jim Ward.
I like El Gran Orgo. I think its one of their better albums. Maybe because without knowing the drama I was introduced to the band on those songs when I was young. It's just really straight forward with good simple lyrics.
The first ATDI song where u got to shine truly man. Was a joy to hear your solo set at sound wave festival in Melbourne all those years ago and chat with u after dude. Stoked to hear some new Sparta lately
I remember meeting you at Tricky Falls before Green Day. You were buying a beer when I recognized you. I was starstruck. Lol. Glad you let me take some pics with you. I also remember at a sleeper car show someone yelling THANK YOU FOR BEING BORN. it was awesome. And you were like"That's the heaviest shit anyone has ever said to me."
Lste 90's , 2000. Jim is such a big part of ATDI just like every single one of the guys in the band. :( I met Cedric and Omar in a Mars Volta show back in 004. Cedric was born in Redwood City ca , the Bay area. I was actually living in that same town at that time.We talked about it in spanish lol. I lived there for a looong time.
Saw this comment and thought it was hilarious. It was on some old thread. This song is about the many failures of the Russian space program. black_cow_of_deathon May 10, 2002
One of my favorite songs. Not it almost has literal meaning. Diagnosed with endocarditis been in the hospital for 2 months. I wish I was an astronaut and just be away from this.

one of the best musicians in music history. This song is my anthem

@elliotlocochon Oh man, I just realised you have the same name as my late friend ❤

Always loved Jim Ward, true musician. As well as a songwriter.. Hometown hero!🫡💯
Love at the drive in but always loved Jim’s contributions the most.
Jim is what made atdi beautiful
100% agree
Omar's avant-garde with Jim's talent for melody is what made ATDI special. More so than the successor bands.
I had a chance to see atdi in NY but they cancel the show minutes before they were supposed to go on. I am really glad they did, because it’s not atdi without Jim Ward. Glad to see him doing what he loves to do.
You know how certain songs blast you back in time? This one does that for me. Every…single….time.
Sometimes a song hits you at a moment in your life where it becomes a part of you and your own story. This is definitely one of those songs for me. Arguably my favorite ATDI song.
💯 this, it was literally years before I realised it was Jim singing
@@Jadedgoober7 I could see that. The only reason I knew is because I saw them live in 99 before I had even heard a recording.
Every time I saw Jim play a solo show someone would yell out for him to play this and it never happened. Glad I get to see it now.

Never thought I’d heard you sing this song again! One of the best ATDI tracks and a great take on the song.
So amazing to hear you sing it, such a classic Jim.
Sucks me in, taking a ride
And I'm wishing for the satellite
Grabbing vein pulling down on the radio
Laughing at the face that's bending down
I'm all alone so far up here
And my oxygen's all gone
Bend the metal
My glory box has failed
We're rocking in our reclining chairs
Drive away that car
That brought us all this harm
Those are the pieces of my story line
I'm all alone so far up here
And my oxygen's all gone
Truly stressing realization
I wish I was an astronaut
Eight hour bitterness all for whose sake
Stain glass Sunday school charades
At the drive in was Jim’s band he started it in highschool
Every morning since 2021 I start up my day with this song/video.
Jim ward you are a legend , greetings from México
I fucking love you, Jim. Never stop mate 🙏❤️
Matt Miller is such a champ and a hero for sticking it out, too. Homegrown talent never fails.
Love jim ward and these 2 guys are the last of SPARTA
Truly, stressing, realization
I wish I was an astronaut!!!!!!! 🤘🏼😆🤘🏼

I feel like Ward grounded the band. Which is a good thing. Like McCartney did for Lennon. Even tho Lennon is my favourite Beatle
I remember asking Jim on ig if he would play this song at some point. He said maybe. Year later I find out he actually did. And its amazing.
Best tune on that record
Omar and Cedric thought they were above Jim when he was looking down on them both.
Jim is the god damn man and Sparta proved it.

Don't know how many times I've come back to this, but one of my favourite songs. such an emotionally charged song. truly amazing
