For more than 20 years I worked in the construction trades. It was often how I paid for new tools for my woodworking. So When my oldest daughter asked me to help them install a gate in their existing fence, I though I could take that opportunity to make a how to video.
They have an older home with a six foot cedar privacy fence in the backyard. There is an area that needed a gate, as the old one had broken long ago.
In this video, I cover step by step how we built a new gate and integrated it into the existing fence.

Love this helpful video! As I'm about to begin my project, though, I'm wondering if I can use the same method if I want to build a shadowbox fence and gate? Just wondering how to place the pickets correctly so that I'd be able to "cut out" the gate. Suggestions?

I noticed your socket was coming off repeatedly. Get some electrical tape and do a wrap where it meets with the socket. Squeeze the trigger and let the driver do the wrapping for you (taping the adapter and socket together). Socket won’t come off anymore. When you are done reverse the drill and pull the tape while unwinding.

Love the life hacks! I never would have thought to build it all attached and then cut it loose after installing the hinges. I was stressing building a new gate, not now. AWESOME!!

Thanks so much for this how to vid. Helped greatly for me. One note: the latch you used can be taken apart and reversed so that the locking side is on the inside of the gate. Also, you can flip the mechanism upside down so it rests on the latch most of the time preventing sag (for sloped gates). Great vid and thanks again for your effort.

Well done vid! I am building an identical gate and fence. For those watching and reading this; if you want to dress this style of fence and gate up just a bit you can run a 1 x 4 across the top on both sides and cap it with a 2x4 or 2 x 6. That will add weight to your gate so plan accordingly. I would also recommend always using metal poles. Anyone who’s ever dug holes for posts will tell you you only want to do that job once! Great vid.

You saved my life with this video thank you. Well done my friend! My gate started sagging right away though and it rubs a bit but I'm not going to redo the end. I should have left a bigger gap where it closes.

5:01 - That is REALLY good advice! I battle a little depression on a regular basis. Mine is related to teenagers. Concrete is so much easier to deal with!
But seriously, this was an EXCELLENT video! I loved your thorough, easy-to-understand presentation. I've built gates before. They've all sagged over time. I needed your video a LONG time ago!

  • @nonparticipant4671
    @nonparticipant4671 6 років тому +4

James does it again! Nice work. I ended up putting the spring loaded hinges to close the gate automatically. Well worth the money in my opinion- especially if you have dogs.
BTW, if you have sagging issues down the line, using a turnbuckle with some 1/8" wire rope from top hinge to lower corner will repair and prevent future issues.

This is such a wonderful, wholesome, and educational video ❤ I watched a few other videos on repairing a gate but they were just confusing. I learned more about repairing a gate watching this video than the others.
I also gotta say, you're an amazing dad. I truly love that you are teaching your daughters(and me 😊) how to be more handy. My dad taught me what he knows and its helped me so much. As a military spouse, it really helps knowing how to make home repairs on my own since my husband often is out training and stuff. You're raising strong, independent women 💪🏼 Keep up the good work ❤

Awesome detailed explanation. I was going to pay somebody to do it but I'm plenty capable, just never messed with fences. I'm a new home owner and there's plenty to do so saving $ on the things I can handle myself is imperative. I think I'll save time and buy a fence section and 2 posts and knock this out in a day. Thanks!

I don’t know if you still read your comments, but I’m going to write it regardless. This is top notch work! I’m “sorta” handy, but building a gate has intimated me. I have one that’s sagging and butt ugly, and I’ve wanted to replace it for years. THIS video is concise, accurate and worded excellently for novices. Thank you! Now, I guess I’ll take out a second mortgage on my house before heading to Lowe’s to get some outrageously priced pickets and 2X4’s. 😂 Great job!

I think your best advice was the cone around the base of the post. I set fences and build gates once in blue moon as a handyman. However, I don't have any help so I defer big jobs. Since the guy who built my neighbors fence never came back to finish installing the gate, my neighbor hired me to do it. Now the span was two great to use the house to hinge it with and or hinge it using the the end 4X4 securing the fence. So with a 6 foot span, I chose to use a 4x6 anchored around 30" down with 1.5 bags of cement. But before I set it, I mark just above the base of the 4x6, pull it back out, then using some painters tape and some cheap roofing tar, I smeared the base with it before putting it back in the hole. 13 years later, my gate is as solid as ever but the fence is a mess. More than half the posts rotted at the base and the sagging between the spans was embarrassing because the builder didn't use not diagonal center supports, or turn his 2X4's vertically

And you hit the most important thing, bevel up that concrete so the post doesn't rot prematurely!!!
Here most fence is pressure treated pine. and fences don't last because nobody bothers to do that!!! Glad to see your keeping your crew busy!😀
