If we all repurposed what we have, just laying around, as he's done for the second time, we'd live in a less wasteful world. I repurpose everything on my homestead multiple times!
@@domading2759 stfu dude. this is a perfectly fine build for keeping deer out. especially with the cost of building materials. you're an embarrassment and a fucking asshole.
I had a few ideas for your gate but most of them are already covered, like adding a X brace to the gate to stiffen it up and a bigger wheel, especially in the grass. I think I’d make the gate out of two by instead of the one by, I wasn’t sure why you used the glue, it didn’t really stiffen the gate much and it just made it harder to replace the chicken wire if you ever need to. A good idea for a cheap, heavier duty hinge that you could use on a number of projects now that you have the idea for it. When you notched the bottom piece of pvc I thought you could notch or double notch the pvc hinge that rides on it so it would hold the gate in a closed or open position. You asked for suggestions, so this comment isn’t trying to demean anything you’ve done, just a friendly comment. Thanks and keep up the good work!
Thank you for this video, your fence looks great! This gate is exactly what I can install in my garden. Love the idea of the wheel at the bottom of the gate, that's genius and the curve you placed to reduce the tension on the pvc pipe. this can work and will save alot of money too!
I appreciate your video. For non-professional carpenters like myself it shows we can put something together that will work without spending a ton of money and without taking a whole weekend. I’ve got too much to do to spend a lot of time and money on one thing. That hinge is very cool. I believe I’d put a couple of braces across the middle and maybe some reinforcement in the corners, little triangle shaped things, and it would stiffen it up a little more. I love the idea of using stuff I already have. Especially the trampoline turned kite!! Love it!! 😁
I drill through the PVC (empty) then put a screw from inside to the wood. I made a lot of rings that I put on my trees then drop in a solar light. works great and they don't get damaged like lights you put in the ground.
I made my whole gate from PVC. Light weight, cheap and self tapping screws will shoot right in them to hang your chicken wire on.For the pivot i hammered in ground a piece of steel pipe and had PVC T-fittings on bottom of PVC gate so just lift gate up and lower open PVC onto the pipe and you got a hinge. I just left a bit, maybe 6 to 10" above ground and it works great. Suppose you could have more if you wanted. My gate isn't as wide as yours but think you'd still be fine ...easy to lift just a bit then swing it open. I even put a small pin on the opposite side of the hinge as a latch at the bottom where it can't just be pushed open.
The missus showed me this video. Lots of potential. The basic structure is awesome. I think the PVC would be ok to keep it one piece. A 4" cordless grinder with cutoff wheel is hands down better for cutting chicken wire/fencing. Needs a diangle brace and the wheel is way too small. Good luck
Your "trenching with a sawzall" video popped up in my feed (great video btw), which then lead me here. It's easy to edit a video to make it look like you're an expert that never makes a mistake. Posting a video where things don't turn out exactly as planned is much harder. Having watched this I learned some neat tricks I wouldn't have thought of, plus some things to avoid. Also, the video clips you insert are excellent!
Initially I had no idea how you would attach the PVC to the gate. Then you started attaching the 'braces' and I had a d'oh moment ;) The UV issue someone else mentioned is definitely a concern, it's brittle enough without UV breakdown. I was amused and appreciative of the trampoline turned kite gate ;) Reuse, recycle, adapt ;)
well... I had zero faith in the correct operation of that hinge.. but as a new sub, I can say, very innovative, and well done. When we moved onto our acreage, I ended up having to try to deal with deer as well as our new German Shepherd Dogs by creating a "back yard" and high enough fencing to keep the deer out. I ended up going to Tractor Supply and getting an 8' and a 12' gate for the various applications and used a T" post assembly in one case and 8" timber posts in the other. I would suggest putting some sort of flagging material on the chicken wire so the deer get used to seeing something that will block them from just running through it in the beginning. When I ran a couple hundred feet of fencing down one side of the property that had mostly been unfenced forever, I got some banner penant type stringers from Amzn and ran them along the top of the wire so they'd see them. YGEOMER 300pcs Colorful Pennant Flags Banner 375ft, although I think I only got 100 ft. of banners.
I think a good UV Stabilized Paint might help that PVC Last longer in the sun. In the AZ Desert, that would turn black and shatter in about 18 months without some sort of paint protection. Good idea for an improvised solution.
Sir you need to add a cross board or from corner to corner to give it stability. You may also try attaching the C clamps to the PVC that way it will help with the rubbing between the PVC parts.
I found it hilarious that you've got all that weight on the side of the T post but still put a level on the gate when securing the hinges. Temporary solution for sure but way better than what I'm using. I just used the end of the roll of chicken wire and swing it open and closed.
should have put in a brace from the top hinge side across to the bottom opposite side corner to corner would have kept the gate from sagging. good job for your first gate build!!!!
Do you expect that to stay square. In a year you’re going to make a much needed revision when it’s out of shape and drooping. How about re-enforcing now with a big X shaped pattern of boards going catty corner to catty corner?
For your PVC hinge, drill holes in one side of the pipe that are large enough for the head of a screw to go through, Then drill small holes in the other side and just screw the pipe directly to the gate. The PVC will stay put, won't slide up and down, then you might not need a wheel at all.
Not the greatest idea I have ever seen, but you are starting, and that's good. One question though, why didn't you straighten up the fence posts and then make the gate fit the hole?
This is one way, complex complicated. It would have been another way to do is to attack a 2x4 to the stake and clamped, and just use regular large hinges for the door.
Your T-Post diagonal braces would be stronger if you used U-bolts to tie them together at the top and tension wire at the bottom. Either way that heavy gate will be better supported if you double or triple up the T's.
Nice idea… Except, reducing the surface area in contact DOES NOT reduce the friction❗️ In fact, if the contact point is too small, it can even increase the friction and wear, as the pieces dig into each other ‼️
Obviously, not farm raised. Dude, loop the end of your garden or field fencing around the T-post and tie it to itself. Then use wire to make a loop of wire at bottom & top of end post , that is in the ground. To close gate, just set bottom of looped t-post into wire loop and push into soil. Then hook top loop over top of t-post to close. Done! Keeps cattle, sheep, dogs, wildlife in or out. And most humans aren't smart enough to get in/out either! Lol total cost ...
What a flimsy gate! With as much or just a little more effort you can build a proper gate.. That thing won't last half a season.. Give us an update on that thing in a few months
Cut a “bushing” out of scrap 1”x. Cut a hole in the center with a hole saw just big enough to slip over the post. Wood should be big enough to sit on the bottom pvc but not so big as to interfere. Now sit the hinge on top of bushing and both sides can slide. - just an idea; haven’t tried it.
Use an old lawn mower wheel on gate for easier rolling. Nice gate, I like it.
I did not think of that.. I should have!! 😀 Thanks for watching!

I’ve left pvc pipe outdoors for years in Delaware, no degradation yet. But you could use pvc electrical conduit which is uv protected.
I like the electrical conduit idea! thanks!
A quick coat or two of any exterior paint provides great uv protection.

Make the gate hinge on a corner braced post.
that way you can keep the post vertical and a well built gate won't need the wheel.
Great thought! Thanks for watching!
Very clever!
I made a similar gate using 1/2“ EMT instead of wood. If you put a diagonal brace on each corner, it will stiffen it a lot. They don't need to be big.
Good info. Only question I would have since the wheel is on dirt/grass; would it not have been better to get a larger wheel?
Thanks for watching! I totally agree.. I may do a follow up with all the improvement suggestions I am getting. great point!

wrong. the brace goes from hinge side bottom to outer edge top. No need for X, just one brace as described.
