  • Months after the City of San Diego implemented its new organic waste recycling program, some San Diegans say they’re now dealing with unintended consequences.
    People say they’re seeing an explosion of gnats, flies, maggots and other bugs and insects inside their bins.
    “Lots of flies doesn’t smell too good," said one San Diegan.
    "As soon as I open it up there’s like 4 thousand fruit flies that came up into my face. I think it’s perfect for like yard waste, like leaves, tree trimmings and things like that, but I don’t know if it’s a good solution for compost especially with the hot weather coming up its going to get worse," said San Diegan, Nick Adams.
    Some people said they’re concerned the waste could attract rodents and other animals.

    If you are a home owner or rents a house, you can easliy compost your food waste into the ground, that is what we been doing for years and the end results is having a very nice fertle yard for our plants.

    I bought a composter from the city of Phoenix about 10 years ago for 5 bucks. They cut off the bottom and drill holes around the outside down low. I used mine for gardening. The city uses the old used plastic garbage cans that had the wheels knocked off and turn them into the composters, instead of throwing them away. I never had a bug problem.

    So the answer is to keep you food scraps in your REFRIGERATOR until pickup day?! I have actually kept a plastic bag in my FREEZER for egg shells, coffee grounds, banana peels, etc., then dump in my apartment dumpster after a couple of days!
    No mess, no smell, no bugs! 🤗

    It helps to have yard waste in the bin, and then put the food waste on top.

    Use compostable bags and wash all your bins/containers weekly after pickup regardless if they're recycle, garbage or green.

      However, you can't dump the compostable bags into the green bin the with food scraps. Not allowed.

      @@greggross8856do you know why? Are they not really compostable?

    • @greggross8856
      @greggross8856 8 місяців тому

      @@rabasac37 Have since learned why. Apparently, they are compostable, but they don't decompose as fast as the food waste we put in them, which interferes with the whole composting process. Eventually, somebody will invent a better compostable bag, but not yet.

      recycling bins are suppose to be the cleanest bins, so they don't need to be washed often, just rinsed once in a while. if recycling bins aren't mostly clean, then there is some kind of contamination

    The gases from these bins are more dangerous than the bugs. Since the beginning of this compost thing respiratory problems have been on a rise. I personally have suffered for the past ⁴ months with respiratory problems.. I know that it has plenty to do with the bad order coming from these GREEN bins.

    • @Amrepdude499
      @Amrepdude499 10 місяців тому

      How would you suddenly develop respiratory issues from the green bins when it’s literally just the trash you were previously throwing in the black bin separated out? It’s the same amount of waste as before just put into a different cart! Same amount of waste, same amount of gases.

    They mention yard waste and compost but , isnt it funny that just a few years they was requesting that everyone go with artificial turf/ grass 🤔 to conserve water. How much of this ridiculous spending are we going to continue to put up with? Like bike lanes no one is using and turnbouts that make no sense.

    Nothing other than placing your compost, rather say, food waste inside another color or type of cart. Where did everyone use to throw your food away before? My point is, rather you throw in your grey, blue or green, is not going to stop all the nasty flys and rats from being attracted to it. However it does make a difference on our earth.

    That's some questionable advice from the City spokesperson; who is going to keep "food waste" in their refrigerator?! Yeah...I'm sure the wife won't mind that at all... Fortunately, we have a lot of garden trimmings, so that goes into the green bin first. Also, we get the Sunday newspaper delivered, so we have enough newspaper to wrap food waste completely. But, if you live in a condo or apartment (no garden/lawn trimmings), and you read the newspaper only online, you're going to jump through hoops to recycle food waste.
