The Strokes' Is This It (in 5 minutes) | Liner Notes
Still one of the greatest albums of all time
Yo, we're a band called Stookvogel. If you like bands like The Strokes, maybe you'll enjoy our music too.
Snap!
Definitely
Jonathan Gillis Not even in the Top 100
Totally :)
I'm gonna cry the strokes are so beautiful
grace :') I knowwwe
the strokes delayed the death of rock n roll for about a decade. cool quote about the alb sounding like worn in blue jeans though.
yeah now we just have these gay dream pop bands copying john lennon like that clown mac demarco
@@defoperator7993 so close but mac demarco isn't bad
i’m currently reading this book called “meet me in the bathroom,” an oral history of new york rock in the 2000s so there’s a whole lot about the strokes in there of course. numerous people mention that that’s how julien always communicates what he wanted with the producer. one quote i specifically remember was him asking to “make the hi-hats sound more yellow”
Def Operator Go listen to some Car Seat Headrest or some King Gizzard
Rock is only dead in the mainstream
still one of the best albums of all time.
feel like a twat, thought this was a shitpost where you guys sped up the album to a speed where it's only 5 minutes long
lilzambezi same
happens to the best of us pal
id actually love to hear that
I thought it was something like a mix...
i’d like to hear that lol
Agreed about the new album cover being better. The brighter color scheme just works way better with the sound of the album.
One of my favourite albums from one of my favourite bands.
Still heavily played in any club I go. (To the point that they almost ruined Last Nite for me.)
In what clubs do they play The Strokes?
Yeah in what clubs do they play rock lol
Asim Hussain, Norman Shaw I live in Italy, there are plenty of venues/clubs that host rock concerts or play exclusively rock music in all its forms...
Like any other country I guess.
Now the question is, where do you live?
in America rock is essentially dead.
Not really
Good shit pitchfork, keep more of these coming out
I still listen to this album. Love THIS The Strokes.
This album has always been in the background of my life. It helped me through a lot. Seeing them live last year almost made me cry haha
They never really topped this one, but damn what a way to debut. Still one of the best albums ever crafted.
There is no "top this one" that's just the rise to fame bs and cliches. But what no one realizes that what actually counts is millions of ppl of opinions not the dumb media or music industry. There new album is a good example of it being loved my millions
@** yes. they're called room on fire and the new abnormal. I'd even go so far as to argue that comedown machine was on par with is this it.
@@gavin0428 I think Room On Fire is actually slightly better than Is This It, because it was more complex and sonically creative, plus the guitar solos are way more amazing. But I definitely disagree about Comedown Machine being on par. I don't think it's even close.
Room On Fire.
@@JAGNFL yeah comedown machine is their worst album
Im glad I torrented them back in the day; NYC cops was always my fave song
My favorite band of all time..they inspired me to start learning guitar. Much respekk
Easily the best rock n roll album of the 21st century.
Abbas Nadeem Elephant by the White Stripes is fair competition though
Or maybe Songs For The Deaf by QOTSA
Abbas Nadeem oh idk about that theres still like 80 years to go.
No
Umm Lateralus? (Not to mention many others but Lateralus is such a great album this doesn’t really compare to it)
one of the best debut albums ever
Here celebrating the 20 year anniversary of this legendary iconic album !!
Love these videos they should do more liner notes on more classic albums
Rolling in the ocean
Trying to catch her eye
Best Album Ever
after listening to this landmark album of them, i can definitely feel their influence on this century's garage/alt/etc. rock songs. i can really feel that Will Toledo's/Car Seat Headrest's Twin Fantasy is VERY influenced by this album
I am so glad that I found this channel. There is video about almost every band I like here
I never understood why Interpol would have never broke without the Strokes until I read "Meet Me in the Bathroom" by Lizzie Goodman and now this video makes more sense
I fucking loved the Strokes in my late teens. I had the chance of seeing their first two gigs in London, at the Barfly and at a mini festival with Trail of Dead, Peaches and Rocket from the Crypt. I still have the Modern Age EP. Good times.
The Strokes were so influential to the revival of rock music. If not for them, modern rock would've just continued to be solely mainstream shit ala Linkin Park, Maroon 5 and Nickelback.
wtf
FunnyComputerGenius Maroon 5 have never been a rock group
Linkin Park is NOT shit
Jonathan Gillis yea, they are
@@Tillermiller868 their first two albums were masterpieces imo
The Strokes and Interpol are my absolute favorites!!
Great video. I just think it fails not to mention that although the album did not sell what was expected, several of the songs on the album were previously downloaded on Napster, a new phenomenon that changed the way music distribution in the music industry works.
I remember the hype around the band (before the album was released) because I had already listened to some songs I downloaded on Napster. At the time there was a rumor that the name of the album Is This It was a joke with the fact that the band was already known before the album reached the shelves of the stores and the question Is This It was about whether the album was really worth anything.
my favorite album in the whole fuckin world I stg it's art
Finally some good content. I think I'm going to go on a Strokes binge and listen to every album again.
Happy 20th anniversary! 😁
One of my Favorite Albums 😍
How wouldn't Interpol exist without the strokes? They formed before the strokes and didn't even have any inspirations from them.
lol.
I was about to comment the exact same thing.
Interpol wouldn't exist without Joy Division though lol.
Interpol wouldn't have this success. Interpol and so many others bands, became loved and famous, after that the Strokes created this new "Indie rock" scene. Without the success of The Strokes, the genre wouldn't have this dimension at all. Before The Strokes, the genres that dominated the rock scene was the nu-metal, the rock-rap...Awful genres. The Strokes are synonym of revival of rock music.
So yes, without the Strokes, Interpol wouldn't be Interpol.
KERLOND whilst it's undeniable that Interpol's success did rest a little on the indie scene created by The Strokes, the way this video phrased it was as if the Interpol crew formed and became a band because of the strokes - when actually Interpol had much of their debut written before they had even heard of the strokes in 2001.
i just love them their music gives me life it makes me so happy i just cant explain it yk?? its like i cant get enough of them. every time any of the boys are mentioned or i see them or hear them i just get so exited and bubbly its weird but maybe someone can relate hahaha
So you are a fan?
New York City Cops is such a good fucking song too.
"The Libertines, Franz Ferdinand, Interpol, The Killers, and The Arctic Monkeys likely would not exist without Is This It."
Elaboration on this? Very interesting statement.
Well, Interpol was already a band and had already put out EPs before Is This It was released, so that part's not really true.
+Bam Ham These bands wouldn't be the same in terms of fame or sound. We can easily hear the influece of Strokes in these bands. I think that's what the narrator wanted to say about that.
+Victor França That is nonsense though. He just said it to make the band sound more important then it was.
I think the first Interpol LP "turn on the bright lights" liner notes would be cool to see.
Well for one Brandon Flowers said he threw out like half of the Killer's debut after hearing Is This It for the first time. And Alex Turner and the other Arctic Monkeys have said they were only really listening to hip hop before Is This It.
2:08 sounds quite Joy Divisiony
Best album ever
I LOVE THE STROKES
Why they stop doing these videos their so amazing and educational
changed everything for me
the best album
what a great album.
New York City Cops is amazing
La cosa de el álbum "Is This It" se volvió más grande que la banda misma.
Eso les jugo en contra con los años. Segun la critica y sus "fans" que según mi opinion siguieron haciendo muy vuena música dehando atras ese debut.
BEST FUCKING ALBUM FUCK
The strokes ♡
Beautiful
My heart ❤️
The guru JP Bowersock
do talking heads 77 pleaseeee!!!!!! or remain in light
Next time,
Talking Heads' Remain in Light,
R.E.M.'s Murmur,
and Gang of Four's Entertainment! Please!!
For The First time, did I actually see someone mention the Vines!
ok coming from a nu metal fan I can say I love the garage scene. and this is probably my favorite album of all time. sure im into the deftones, system of a down, korn, and pod, but I can sure say the strokes stood out from the rest and made an amazing album. (mainstream nu metal sucks tho) limp bizkit, crazy town, linkin park, ect
The Real Mexican And you also love American Football, strange
The Real Mexican You have a horrible taste in music. POD??? I mean really.... lmfao...... Please expand your taste in music.......
Wow system of a down is not mainstream now?
Do vampire weekends first album
classic
this album is so homey
regarding 1:05
The Strokes foundation = 1998
Libertines foundation = 1997
Interpol foundation = 1997
just sayin
yeah that's true but it's also true that they probably wouldn't exist the way they exist without the Strokes...also Pete Doherty was a massive Strokes fan.
Michael Bauer same way nirvanas success spread fame for everyone in the grungey genre , strokes success shed more light on artists like Interpol & libertines. I'm guessing that's the point they're making.
That's how I interpreted it. Much like how labels swooped into Seattle and signed every band after Nirvana, they did the same in NYC after the Strokes.
If you heard Libertines early music it was completely different. They even admitted seeing Strokes on TV and consciously making music like that
Yeah they were formed but they never reached their typed without the strokes influential style. Buddy do more research and be a lil more open minded
which metal album will they do on this annotated notes
metal sucks
ya boy bhagudia I'd guess something like Metallica's Black Album. An album whose story is well documented and which was extremely successful commercially, as well as important to the style of the artist.
OH MY GOODNESS!!!!!!!!!!
they have the when it started instead of new york city cops? weird. UK and USA versions are different but it's the online version tho
coheed sweatshirt at 0:50
I'll save you all the time: it's essentially a dumbed-down version of Marquee Moon by Televison.
awesome video
I can't say these bands wouldn't exist...but Joy Division, has to be the reason this type of music exist...
love these!!!!
The libertines up the bracket in 5 minutes
Fuck yeah
i fucking love julian
It's a good album...
whatever people say i am, that´s what im not
Last night
do one for funeral by arcade fire
Saying that Libertines likely wouldn't exist without The strokes is a bit of a stretch...Especially since most of the Up the bracket material was already ready by mid-2001.
imagine making a video about a classic album and getting a lyric wrong - ‘they ain’t that smart’ !?!? it’s ‘too’ not ‘that’!
it's a perfect album and sadly they never lived up to it again
jonwthan richman angles and room on fire are still really good tho
True, all their other albums just have 1-2 good songs on it
scylla019 that's just like, your opinion man
think again
LMAO dude that's your opinion but holy shot each album has atleast 5 bangers. Pretty sure you havent heard the newest album..
and i thought i was popular; just for liking them
I'm probably the only person who thinks First Impressions of Earth is their best record. I do like the first two as well, but the albums after FIoE have been awful (in my opinion).
FIOE changed my life. I haven't been able to stop listening to it for 3yrs. I get that it could be a bit hard to chew on at first for some people, but the album is so fucking underrated.
And yes I use Moretti as an alias often.
I've heard a lot of shit about FIOE, but I also think it's one the best. Honestly their only record that I dislike is Comedown Machine, Angles is a diamond in rough, Is This It and Room on Fire are just pure pleasure.
First Impressions of Earth will always be my favourite! I agree with you completely, their latest album's have been suckish since FIoE...
I just hope their new album (they are "apparently" working on) goes back to their original sound
I agree 100%
That album is pure genius.
Hu
Too bad their next couple of albums are not as good as this.
Could you please do more research before saying things like without the strokes there would be no interpol. Interpol was a band before this is it came out.
mando diao's debut is still better
stop
Room On Fire is better
lies contrarians tell themselves vol. 1
***** Both are perfect but ROF contains my absolute favourite Strokes songs, Automatic Stop, so it wins. After that it's a tight race between 12:51, You Talk Way Too Much, Is This It, Someday, Barely Legal and Ask Me Anything
Room of fire is very good but Is this it is their masterpiece.
i agree with you good sir .
none of the songwriting on room on fire beats someday, last nite but there are really good songs just not that level perfection
I love the Strokes and Is This It, but still I think the album is overrated.
The Strokes suck.
i didnt care for the strokes
First two albums are great but the rest of their output falls flat. No band ever had it easier than the strokes did (and still do). This band could release an album of Michael Bublé covers and they'd still sell out stadiums. Crazy.
Gerry Shalam That's obviously not true, loads of bands have reached that level of fame and recognition
indie-kid bubblegum pop music we all have nostalgia for. It's nice, but it's on the same level of stuff like The Ramones who wore the fashion of a style they didn't sound like.
what?
INDIE-KID BUBBLEGUM POP MUSIC WE ALL HAVE NOSTALGIA FOR. ITS NICE BUT ITS ON THE SAME LEVEL OF STUFF LIKE THE RAMONES WHO WORE THE FASHION OF A STYLE THEY DIDN'T SOUND LIKE.
never knew we had to type louder for the hard of hearing
FeatherInferno37 hHahahahahhaha
I saw the Ramones 3 times in the 80s and they definitely DID sound the way they looked! Granted the studio albums, even the classics, are quite weak but live in their heyday they were a blasting combination of noise rock & bubblegum
The Velvet Watered-Down
THE LIBERTINES CAME BEFORE THE STROKES, they hate the strokes and were already signed when Strokes released their debut. They did not were influence by The Strokes.
Awww!!
pete is a massive fan of the strokes
The libertines were nothing before is this it
sh they don't hate the strokes pete is influenced by the strokes so shut the fuck up fanboy
"The Strokes may not have saved rock and roll"..
That's right. Nothing seminal about this album. Like Ok Computer it confirmed that innovative rock albums had become a subgenre and that the current "it" rock band could no longer be the face of music.
U2 and Coldplay were the only ones that came close in the 00's, and they basically did heritage rock/pop.
I agree with what you are saying to some extant except that u2 and coldplay suck.
aaaaaand history has not been kind to the Strokes. They turned out pretty terrible.
Mj F Seem to be doing better then you...... Who are you again???
you're fucking insane
What an overrated album. These rich kids just wanted to get a band together with daddies money and become rock stars, and then everyone hails this mediocre album as a classic? Utter bollocks.
Agreed. That boring album is the same awful and generic song repeated 11 times.
So overrated
hipster
Best album ever
New York City Cops is such a good fucking song too.
