I bought Nevermind on cassette right when it came out. I always thought "Something In The Way" was the hidden track, because there was a long pause right before it. Did anyone else's cassette not have any music after "Something In The Way?
According to Loudwire: The hidden track ‘Endless Nameless’ was mistakenly left off the first 50,000 copies The track, which starts several minutes after the conclusion of 'Something in the Way,' was an improvised noise jam captured when the engineer kept the tape running after a botched attempt at recording 'Lithium.' An error at the pressing plant caused the omission.
This was pretty good but the biggest issue wasn't the tuning of his guitar but that he laid it down without a click track. Butch Vig talks about it during the Classic Album's series on Nevermind
Who will be the next great rock band that'll change everything? Nirvana was, arguably, the last band to do it. When Nirvana hit in 1991, they single-handedly took out Los Angeles cock rock and terrible corporate pop music in one swipe. It was an amazing breath of fresh air. Terrible pop music didn't recover until 2000ish with the Backstreet Boys and Britney Spears. It's 2016 and there still isn't a really great rock n' roll movement that celebrates independent, underground rock.
Very VERY good question. I don't think it will happen for a very very long time. With the way media is today, everything is "instant" and obsessive until the next thing comes along say, a few weeks later. It seems nothing really has a long lasting impact in today's world. We can only hope there comes a new platform and with it, a new band that transforms today's terrible, "popular" music.
my man for what its worth, I'm really really trying to get my band started. All I do is write grunge riffs and half ass songs. if I can find a drummer and bassist to realize my vision then I might not be able to change the face of music but I will contribute to the lost rock movement, it is still alive
Was in 8th grade when this thing dropped. I was into stuff like Metallica, Slayer and Megadeth at the time, along with all of the classic rock stuff. So this thing came along at the exact right time for me. The whole grunge thing was basically marketed directly at my age group. Listening to it now (well the songs that haven't been totally worn out) I can't help but wonder why it was as giant as it became and why it's achieved it's legendary status, a sentiment I'm sure Kurt would echo. It's really good pop punk. Kurt could write a hook that's for sure. I think it was just the right album and the right band at the exact right moment. I love Kurt's voice as the whole "dirty vs clean" vocals deal I land on dirty, but he's not a particularly talented vocalist. He's also not a particularly talented guitar player, although it may have to do with the style of music and the eschewing of long, boring, noodling guitar solos than of his actual ability. The song structure isn't anything special either, it's the Beatles meet (insert punk band here). Like I said, I think it was just different enough and the industry seized on the fact that they needed a new sound to sell as the whole hair metal/glam thing had been played out by that point. Again I think Kurt was pretty confused about it himself. I don't think he wanted to be what the industry made him out to be. I think he wanted to be where music like this belongs, just on the edge of household name but never #1 on the Billboard. I shed a few tears when I heard he died over the radio and I was about as big a fan as they came back then, but looking back I can't help but think Nirvana wasn't ever supposed to be where they ended up.
A side note to go with the video.......Endless Nameless was recorded during Lithium sessions. Kurt got frustrated and angry during the recording session for Lithium and went into a rage filled jam in which Kris and Dave joined in
The problem with Nirvana is they didn't last long. It was January, 1992 and 'Nevermind" hit #1 in the USA. On 5 April, 1994 Kurt was dead. I believe that is 27 months. Not long at all.
Buddy, that album WAS an instant smash. The single and video preceded the album's release by a couple of weeks, and the original 50k pressed sold out so fast the album wasn't available for a week. Please, do your research. That data is so readily available it should be embarrassing.
Pretty cool, but their is nothing that new Nirvana fans need to know. All they need to know is that it's all on the music man! Plus, they had their time of their lives playing kickass songs to people.
Endless Nameless was the result of the band not being able to record Lithium in the way that they wanted - he wanted. After a couple of days of it, in frustration, they cobbled-together and blew-out what we now know as Endless Nameless. It's a tantrum! :)
He's not technically correct about Something in the Way. Vig did not 'convince' Cobain to to record this way. They were not getting the sound they wanted, and Vig asked Cobain how he wanted it to sound like. Cobain - with guitar in-hand - played the song in the control room and that's when Vig asked him to stop so he could put speakers in the control room. This is why the song is so quiet and you can hear every texture, strum and nuanced speech from Cobain; Vig dampened very other sound.
did they just say radiohead was inspired by nevermind? pablo honey came out the same year, they wouldn't nearly have had the time... and creep came out in 1992 there isn't a chance they were influenced until the bends
Are you sure? I mean I love Radiohead but I'm pretty sure you can hear a lot of grunge in their earlier work. Of course the Nirvana influence ends there.
That’s an interesting point, Radiohead were influenced by grunge at the start but not sure if it was Nirvana in general. In fact, I have never heard any of Radiohead’s members mention Nirvana in any interview..
You missed the fact that "Come as You Are" was a blatant ripoff of "Eighties" by Killing Joke even down to Geordie's special guitar tuning. There was a lawsuit about that until Kurt's death where Killing Joke dropped it.
I first heard Bleach post-Nevermind. I hated it that first time, but it later grew on me. I still think Nevermind and In Utero are better albums, but I definitely like Bleach.
Fun Xerio I really don't understand how anyone could possibly think that, his singing and song writing improved exponentially on never mind. bleach has some good stuff on it, but it's not great like nevermind
The production of Nevermind does sound a bit "slick" and almost synthy, the 80s were still refusing to die. If you want proof of what Kurt WANTED - listen to the production on In Utero. The raw yet close sound of the guitar strings on "heart shaped box" undistorted, then crashed against the chorus were a revelation to me at age 13. Having digested Nevermind completely, In Utero truly seemed like what they SHOULD have been sounding like the whole time.
I hate anti-capitalists. They claim to "hate capitalism", yet they love making money, which is the point of capitalism. Kurt Cobain and the rest of Nirvana, as well as other anti-capitalist musicians/bands like the garbage RAtM, are huge tools because of this. I can respect Nirvana for their musical talents (RAtM have none), but that's all I have respect for. If you're in a position or business to make money, maybe you shouldn't decry the system that allows you to get rich through your own merits and hard work. Just sayin'.
I'd still rather famous people use their platform to spread an anti-capitalist message then the majority of famous people who willingly join in on the all-american pull-yourself-up-by-your-bootstraps narrative.
Everyone has that first rock record that opens the door to a new world.....NEVERMIND was that album for me thank you Kurt
The same
Highway 61 revisited was mine
Ironically mine was a rap album that sampled almost exclusively classic rock songs. Cry baby by lil peep 🤷🏾♂️
Mine was sheer heart attack
Same
I love Nirvana. I've always been into hiphop, but they got me hooked pretty fast.
then you should listen Kid Cudi´s Straight bullet to heaven. He mixes grunge with hip hop
That album is terrible though.
Evan Binkley
No way. It is the new Sgt. Peppers
ahahahahaha
Real shit yo 🙌🏾
Then you might also like Alice in Chains, Sonic Youth or the Pixies
Sooo if you want to play Endless Namelles you have to smash your guitar
Thanks your for the advice!!
Specifically ram it into a mixing board and fuck the knobs and switches with your headstock, but yeah!
This is a cool series. Keep em coming Pitchfork.
There's something about how this video was made that's really appealing. I wish there were more like this.

great vid... a bunch of things I didn't know! and I've been following them for 20 yrs now!
I bought Nevermind on cassette right when it came out.

TerminalSaint that's the coolest thing about this album I've ever heard about this album. AND I REPLAYED THIS ALL IF 2015
I had the vinyl, Something in the way was the last song.
This was pretty good but the biggest issue wasn't the tuning of his guitar but that he laid it down without a click track. Butch Vig talks about it during the Classic Album's series on Nevermind
I absolutely love your video editing, keep it up!
What about some jazz for the next album? Like John Coltrane's Giant Steps or Miles' Kind Of Blue/Milestones/Sketches Of Spain
His comment says more about _him_ than anything else.

In Bloom was thought up before the new takes cause Dave Grohl credited Chad with coming up with the drums at the beginning
i honestly prefer in utero
I prefer bleach to be honest
Bleach is their best album in my opinion.
@Draevon May very ape still gives me chills.
Jesus and the Mary Chains' Psychocandy?
A side note to go with the video.......Endless Nameless was recorded during Lithium sessions. Kurt got frustrated and angry during the recording session for Lithium and went into a rage filled jam in which Kris and Dave joined in
That’s fucking awesome about the smashed guitar and the microwaved record, never knew about that stuff
Channing played on In Bloom too....
The problem with Nirvana is they didn't last long. It was January, 1992 and 'Nevermind" hit #1 in the USA. On 5 April, 1994 Kurt was dead. I believe that is 27 months. Not long at all.
Love this

This series is great
You guys should do one of these on one of Stone Temple Pilot’s first three albums
Do Pink Season by Pink Guy

Pablo Honey =/= grunge music

It's more like Nirvana and Radiohead both got inspiration from REM. I think that's the more accurate connection between the bands.
#soakedinbleach
Is it still on Netflix? It's an excellent documentary that every Nirvana fan should see.
Atonio Vasquez It’s got nearly zero evidence to support its theory, it’s a piece of shit.
Beat Sunshine exactly, it’s like writing an essay on a myth, then adding bullshit facts
Incesticide > Nevermind > In Utero > Bleach
you're entitled to your absolutely incorrect opinion I suppose
Do Alice in Chains Dirt album!
they microwaved nelson's album? NICE!!!!
Radiohead weren't influenced by Nirvana. That would be the pixies.
Wat lmao
well, at the earliest they were a grungish band
other way round bro pixies influenced kurt big time
Jett Vassallo Kurt loved the pixies dynamic, you can hear it in the flow of nevermind that quiet loud quiet loud mash up.
Tauren are you seriously suggesting Nirvana influenced the Pixies? lol the other way around. Nirvana borrowed heavily from the Pixies and the Melvins
Nelson lol
Oh man the guy who narrates this has he goofiest voice i’ve heard
Who are these guys? Nirvana? 😜
Ali g or butch vig?
You don't need to know anything just listen to the music
Leo Cachero did they say you did...?
EXACTLY
It’s all in the music man it’s all in the meat!
You missed the fact that "Come as You Are" was a blatant ripoff of "Eighties" by Killing Joke even down to Geordie's special guitar tuning. There was a lawsuit about that until Kurt's death where Killing Joke dropped it.
Do GG Allin's entire discography
i agree with cobain, its far too slick and over produced, in eutero was the far better album
If you mixed the Melvins, Bay City rollers, the pixies and Sonic youth...you get Nirvana..just saying
Gravy channels so?
Bay City Rollers? What? How?
Anon B the poppy melodies
666 views when i get here :/
interesting but not really enlightening. Cool or whatever
Don't really understand the likes, that was horseshit.
Green day wasn't influenced by nirvana lmao
They started becoming a band the same time nirvana did
Bleach was better
I first heard Bleach post-Nevermind. I hated it that first time, but it later grew on me. I still think Nevermind and In Utero are better albums, but I definitely like Bleach.
I appreciate the humour of Bleach. It is very ironic and jokey
Fun Xerio I really don't understand how anyone could possibly think that, his singing and song writing improved exponentially on never mind. bleach has some good stuff on it, but it's not great like nevermind
Bleach & Fecal Matter >>>>>>>>>>>> everything else
The production of Nevermind does sound a bit "slick" and almost synthy, the 80s were still refusing to die. If you want proof of what Kurt WANTED - listen to the production on In Utero. I saw Weezer FUCK YEAH
This is one of the weaker episodes, unfortunately.
Nirvana is good but way overrated.
Always liked the album, but couldn't watch their videos. Couldn't stand that Cobain guy.
Why? Did you hate him for his looks?
Useless video with some incorrect information
Bleach by far their best work

guess we should all just quit our jobs and be homeless then.
u the kinda guy that would have a go at peasants for revolting with pitchforks given by their masters.
I'd still rather famous people use their platform to spread an anti-capitalist message then the majority of famous people who willingly join in on the all-american pull-yourself-up-by-your-bootstraps narrative.
Your logic is fucking retarded. You’re a critique of capitalism? Haha, do you own things?
Please don’t answer that it was a rhetorical question.
Pearl Jam > Nirvana
