Sonic Youth's Daydream Nation (in 5 Minutes) | Liner Notes
Вставка
- Опубліковано 1 жов 2024
- From the moment they started playing together in the early 80s, Sonic Youth blurred the line between punk and the avant-garde. When Sonic Youth began work on their fifth studio album, Daydream Nation, those two sides of the band’s identity collided, and they began making music that was more ambitious, and more vital, than anything they’d done before.

Sonic Youth's Daydream Nation in 5 Minutes
Not to brag but I am a very good album
you bet
One of the best
Indeed
No you’re not lmao
Definitely one of the best
I listened to this album non-stop after I quit doing drugs and alcohol. The music some how inspired me to stay the course. Now I'm going on 2 years clean and sober. It has a special emotional value to me.
what a beautiful history, abel
Awesome dude, carry on. Music can bring together all kinds of people and I thank you for sharing with us.
I hope you still doing great men, you can do it.
Sonic youth was one of the bands I listened to the most when I first got clean and sober
I can kinda of understand what you feel
takes a teenage riot to get me out of bed rn :-(
never clicked so hard
Cole Kempton did the mouse break?
Sonic Youth is literally the band that every band wants to be. Their first 15 years are perfect. From Sister to Dirty, there's amazing songs all the way through their discography.
If you can't tell, SY is my favorite band.
What are your top 5 favorite albums from sonic youth? I’m trying to get into them
@@bradleyburns7608 Start with Sister, Daydream Nation, Goo, Dirty, and Rather Ripped.
@@bradleyburns7608 Lucifer Sam gave you a good list, but I'd add in EVOL, because it was recorded in a brick basement and you can tell in a good way. Also, listen to their peel sessions. They cover an Alice Cooper song and The Fall's version of the Kinks Victoria. Sister, Daydream Nation and EVOL are my top three.
@@bradleyburns7608 I'd throw A Thousand Leaves and Washing Machine in their too. Goo is my personal favourite.
@@lucifersam7946 I think we have the exact same taste. Cheers!
Do Corey Feldman´s "Angelic 2 the Core: Funkadelic/Rockadelic"
A 45 minute analysis of Man's Not Hot
R.I.P. Glenn Branca, without you, SY may not have the courage and creativity to create this masterpiece.
Joy division unknown pleasures next please
RHYS KENYON YES
Imo closer is the better album but unknown pleasures is the better shirt
Siamese dream, would be a good one.
an Extra Terrestrial yesssss please
YES
YES!
YASSSDS
not Mellon collie?
Do Husker Du's Zen Arcade or anything by Fugazi.
Mojo Jo Jo Junior Shabadoo please husker dont!

Talking Heads' "Remain in Light" please
Holden Caulfield YES!
Lil Pump's Lil Pump in 5 minutes
Like 5 minutes even begin to decipher the deeper meaning of it
They did Damn as "instant classic" and Lil Pump got the same 7 rating with the Melon
Melon approved this comment hard
In 7 minutes
OOUUU
As Sonic Youth fanatic, i have to say well done on the video, I haven't stumbled across something about this band i didn't know in a while. Great album and great video.
It took me many repeated listens before I finally understood and loved this album. I assume that when people firstly discover Sonic Youth they play Teen Age Riot and Silver Rocket over and over. That’s what I did anyway 😂. I loved the Silver Rocket chord progression and how it felt kind of like like a Pixies song off Surfer Rosa.
I wouldn’t listen to the other songs on the album for ages after this initial discovery. I just didn’t like how unorganised and long the songs on the rest of the album were. For some reason like six months later I came back to the album and discovered the other “catchy” songs like Candle, Hey Joni and Kissability. I was getting closer to appreciating the album as a whole.
Then I left it for ages again... no listens until pretty recently where I decided to burn a copy of the album and have it in my car as a CD. And it was in the car where I finally “got it”. Repeated listens make the longer songs more memorable and once you have the tunes locked inside your head everything just becomes so much better.
My advice, listen to the album on repeat in the car 😜. My favourite song is now Cross the Breeze. Seeing that live must be bloody nuts.
Edit: spelling
Harrison Malone it took me a while to listen to the rest of the album because I couldn’t get over how amazing Teen Age Riot was. Especially those opening chords. Felt like what church is supposed to be
VinWizzy I guess that’s what I was trying to articulate... I didn’t delve deeper into the album straight up because of how great the first two tracks were
In the same boat as you were in, will definitely try again. This album didn't hit me immediately like Sister did so I mostly wrote it off
The intro and outro to cross the breeze is a Masterpiece
Obama Christ I still haven't listened to Sister that avidly. I need to dedicate some time too it. So in your opinion, it's an easier record to listen to than Daydream Nation?
The Avalanches' Since I Left You next!
Raimox112 that would be a very fascinating video
Raimox112 agreed
Raimox112 definitely
Raimox112 The most overrated album in history
in what way?
This is my favorite album EVER!!!!!!!!!!!!! I really wanted a Liner Notes of this album (or any other SY)
Do Beck's Odelay or Bowie's Low next!
Odelay is 👌👌👌
The outro of cross the breeze is fucking amazing
Yessssss, now we just need The Microphones: The glow Pt 2, & the Dismemberment plan: Emergency & I
Kritzberg exactly
I would love to see Refused's Shape of Punk to Come done like this, such an amazing album!!
Their best album of the 80s, which is saying something massive, but I don't know if I consider it their best album tbh. If it is their best, it's a tie best. It's definitely in their top 2-3. Maybe #2. Okay, it's their best. After "Washing Machine" that is. Fuck it, it's their best album. I think. Maybe. I don't know.
Nikola Demitri My favorite is Sister, followed by Goo. For some reason, Daydream hasn't really clicked with me other than a few songs.
I personally prefer Sister. But this one is also really really really good.
Sister-Daydream Nation-Goo are tied for #1 for me. Hard to say which of those three is better.
I really fucking love Washing Machine and their 2002 album (which I cannot remember the title at all, but I remember the album cover has the little girls in what appears to be a berry bush garden and the bushes are covered in nets) along with Sister, Goo, Daydream. They're all hard to choose from for me.
Nikola Demitri Murray Street
Slanted and enchanted
One of my brother's friends randomly gave me this on cd when I was 14. 15 years later it stands as a solid top 5 of all time for me.
Fuck yes
Fugazi (any album) in 5 minutes
Diego Torres if theyre doing any Fugazi you bet your sweet ass it’s gonna be 13 songs
Diego Torres either way any album from fugazi would be fucking DOPE
they did it lol
fuzzydunlop45 Strange they did In On The Kill Taker out of just about everything else they could have done for Fugazi. I mean, its still an amazing record, though I would have preferred a Linear Notes over 13 Songs, Repeater, Red Medicine, or The Argument over In On The Kill Taker.
@@TheFonz995 nope repeater
I'm probably in the minority that prefers Dirty over Daydream but oh well very good album nonetheless.
YESSSS its that time of the month we get liner notes
Liam?
omg hi matt
One of my favorite albums of ALL TIME
Glenn Branca's - The Ascension next pls
Or Minutemen's - Double Nickles On The Dime
Wish there was a full Pitchfork classic for this one, without a doubt, one of my favorite records of all time!
Harvest or After the Gold Rush or On the Beach?
Sonic Youth redefined what great sound is
Feels by Animal Collective please
I kind of feel like Kim Gordon's roll was underplayed in the video regarding Sonic youth's sound. She was easily the most artistically literate and most likely the driving force behind going into a genre bending direction. I feel like Moore just wanted to be a rock star.
She overshadowed the rest of the band. Every single member is important and crucial to their sound but people are only obsessed with her. The audacity lmao
Persistently astounding album
John Higgins :(
Rites of Spring’s Self Titled in 5 minutes
The Chameleons Script of the Bridge would be awesome!
Johnny Thunders & The Heartbreakers L.A.M.F
the unicorns who will cut our hair when were gone
still a great album, but Sister was the real turning point! and maybe their best
I have to agree that Sonic Youth are one of the greatest bands of all time , certainly one of my favourites , from the Bad Moon Rising LP up until the mid 90's they made some of the best music you'll ever hear , one thing I hate tho is Kim Gordon's vocals , all those songs that she ruined with her singing , songs that were musically fantastic and well written only to be spoiled by either her grunting , over exerted 'punk' style delivery or her more subdued and out of tune type delivery , either way it's like taking a razor blade to a great painting or scribbling over one with a marker pen . I understand that dischord and dissonance were an integral part of their overall sound and that's partly why I like them but there are good and bad ways of being dischordent or dissonant and Kim Gordon falls into the bad category . Listen to how good Lydia Lunch sounds on Death Valley 69 and imagine her in place of KG , I think it would have been a vast improvement overall . I would love to hear all the Sonic Youth songs that she sang on remixed either as instrumentals or with Thurston or Lee (or Lydia Lunch) doing the vocals . It's a crime for her to have ruined them in this way ..
Isnt Ian MacKaye in the video for Teenage Riot?
Yup so was Dennis Wilson and Mark E Smith
I've been waiting patiently for this...
Murray Street is my favorite. Washing machine is also incredible.
Okay but please never use the word 'thrash' to describe the Ramones again. Ugh.
"captured the national mood during the waning days of the Reagan administration", the mood that got Bush elected?
I think Sister is better
One of the greatest and most influential albums of all time. 10/10
i swear i’ve seen u on rym before
@@Ben-ql6hc Yep Same name on PFP
DO MAGGOT BRAIN
The key is... more about feel. Feel art don't force it. Flow state
Classic.
Such a legendary yet underrated album
It’s known as their magnum opus and is in the Library of Congress. It’s not underrated whatsoever.
i find it really funny that this was posted the day after I really started getting into Sonic Youth. love this series
At 2:21, what guitar is Ranaldo using? Looks kinda unfamiliar to me.
All I know is that it's a Fender
SIster > This
That's it, i love you.
the j mascis is president went over my head what?
Keep making these videos, They're so good.
do klf's "chill out."
I just watched a movie called daydream nation and now I think it’s about these people because all the names line up
Such a classic...I'd love to see Funeral by Arcade Fire in 5 min.
I never understood why this album is considered better than Sister or Evol or even moon rising, especially sister. For me it is just uninspiring. When they don't have inspiration they play too fast and loud. Guitars, drums everything is loud, their songs are muddy without choruses or anything remarkable.
Unknown Pleasures next, please !
Screeeeeeeeeaming. SY forever
always wanted to like this band but could never find more than a handful of tracks to listen to and enjoy...no idea why as I like SO many genres and sounds, I even write music myself...they've just always sounded so "light" and "messy" and "out of tune"...I'll keep on listening to them though. I'm sure it's just me...usually is!!
sonic youth is punk?
I'm guessing you won't ever do swans - soundtracks for the blind, but it's the better album so
Fucking love this album. Please do London Calling!
Didn't know Pitchfork was just a bunch of /mu/ enthusiasts
Sister >>>>>
Do Phil Collins' "But Seriously" !
Screamadelica?
Did they mention Providence Hit-Single?
Please do Double nickels on the dime and Zen Arcade
Primus' Frizzle Fry would be nice
These are too good and too short Pitchfork, I need more !!!!
teenage riot aka J mascis for president
Hounds of Love would be amazing!
Evol is better
Permanently tuned to ‘thread’.
I feel fortunate that I've seen them live twice.
Hardcore drumming???
One of my favorite bands (or albums) of all time
DO HERZELEID BY RAMMSTEIN
Do pink flag by wire
please. please. PLEASE. do funeral by arcade fire :(
Dirt should be a good one
my favorite album ♥
So happy I found these. Great stuff
one of the best albums ever . love .
i need a teenage riot, to wake me up right now
Do one on Dinosaur jr
❤
Awesome!!!
I just fell in love with this thing a week ago.
Anyway if you love music like this, check out Neutral Milk Hotel's In The Aeroplane Over The Sea, Slint's Spiderland, or Godspeed You! Black Emperor's Lift Your Skinny Fists Like Antennas To Heaven. These are all different kinds of music, but they're all fantastic albums. Aeroplane the best out of all of them though.
I love Lift Your Skinny and Spiderland, but I think Aeroplane sucks lol.
hell yes
