    I just replaced the radio on my 03 Jetta. This tutorial is very helpful. Two thing to note - You don't need the additional wire extensions as he mentions. No need for them. Actually, I had difficulty pushing the radio in place with all of the wire harness/connectors taking up space. I installed a double din radio. I had to pull it out 3-4 times to move all that stuff around to make room for the radio. Also, definitely connect the red power wire to the Yellow 75x nut as he describes. You gotta pull apart the underside panels like he mentions, but it only takes a few extra minutes. Thanks!

    Great video....... Must say it saved a lot of headaches thanks. FYI as said in the video the space is very tight, in order to make more room I relocated the factory harness just to the left behind the dash. In addition I used crutchfield's harness and I did not have to run the red wire to the terminal under the dash.

    thank you! the "profession" installation of my pioneer unit spliced the red power into the yellow which drained my battery. after deducing it was the radio I removed the radio fuse which kept my battery full but no tunes. after I watched your vid I ran out to rewire the red to the wiper fuse and once again I can rock out to work ty ty ty!!!

    i just got done installing now of these in a 04 jetta with monsoon system. And not all wires are color coded exactly on both sides. Most cars won't match on both. And also most importantly YOU DO HAVE SWITCHED POWER. I will check in the morning what color it is, but the stock unit has 1 constant power and 1 switched connection also call the ignition 12v wire. i sure hope you enjoy your stereo :)

      Was gonna say the same thing. Just more wire to get cluttered. You can pull on factory harness enough that it’ll come all the way out of the dash compartment

    Why do I need to extend every cable if the original cables already reach the old radio and the pioneer cable already adds additional length?

    • @timmyl2005

      So you can waste your time of course!! Come on man get with the program. LMAO!! Just like soldering all your connections and then using electrical tape. If you really wanna make the radio sound good add 6.5 feet to every wire run it over to the passenger side and loop it around the airbag support brackets a couple times and then back to the radio. Don’t put it so it interferes with the deployment of the airbag. Keep the wires parallel with the dash. You will pick up 18 Watts per speaker by doing that !! Free power. It works because there’s a flux capacitor inside the airbag and it boosts any audio signal that comes close to it. Don’t believe me Google flux Capacitor passenger air bag find out for yourself. I had to upgrade my door speakers from the power increase.

    "Constant" means the wire is always hot, even when the car is off. "Switched" means the wire is hot only when the key is turned on. You can just run short wires to the constant and switched wire on the harness. Why would you need to run 4 foot long wires under the steering wheel?

    • @80HDPotatoTree

      +Billy Joe There is no switched wire on the factory VW harness. He even said this in the vid.

    • @TechGuyJay
      @TechGuyJay 7 років тому +4

      Yeah, for whatever reason, VW decided to be jackasses, and, rather than have a true switched power line, it sends a signal to the factory stereo that tells it to turn itself off. Aftermarket stereos have no idea what to do with this signal, so they just stay on constantly. That's why you have to wire them to an actual switched power source within the car. There are electronic devices that will receive this signal, and simulate what the factory stereo would do, though.

    Are you a "professional" installer? I'm not a fan of butt connectors, electrical tape, and excess wiring. Those are the reasons why I do my own installs now. At least you used a factory harness adaptor. Most shops just hack off the factory harness and butt the wires on. Making future upgrades or OEM difficult. Good video though. I'll deff refer to it when i do my upgrade. Also for anyone who doesn't want to spend $10 on removal keys, I've used metal nail files with success. For about $1 or less a piece it's a lot cheaper.

  • @snowboard13gcuz
    @snowboard13gcuz 8 років тому +5

    I don't understand why you had to extend all those wires a couple of inches? there is always plenty of length when adding a wire harness.. and i'm not sure if its a cheaper wire harness problem but I've installed the harness with steering wheel controls and didn't have to run that extra power on wire anywhere.

    OMFG, no... You do not put the fuse at the radio, you put the fuse as close as you can to where you grab power from.. THIS is how cars catch on fire..
    You spent all that time soldering the connections, and you didn't heat shrink them? C'mon, electrical tape is amateur hour.

    • @timmyl2005
      @timmyl2005 5 років тому +1

      You don’t know what your talking about. I always put the fuse as far away from my radio as I can. I run the wires from the battery to the trunk on the drivers side then up the passenger side and to the rear of the radio. Then put the fuse behind the airbag so if I need to change the fuse I have to remove the airbag. Plus if I can’t make the car payment I have all that fuse I mean wire to remove my car payment. LoL. Ps. I solder all the connections and use butt connectors 1/2 inch from the radio. Trim the pioneer harness as short as possible pioneer wires have to much resistance .

    Once the pioneer sits inside the plastic surround/cage/install kit thing, how does it stay in place, the video cut before it was fully pressed in. Is there a click? You said it would be difficult to take out, so maybe i should wait until my amp and sub are connected to the unit before putting on the plastic piece ? Thanks

      I read that there is a security feature on the cars that causes the deck to not turn on if the dash kit is not pushed in all the way. Be sure you push it in until you hear clicks...

    How about if you wanted to do the opposite? Remove the after market double din radio? Would it be the same?

      You need a navstar module from nasa to complete the install. It helps with the gps.

    thanks again for the video. You showed me the bolt and nut under the dash which is where I attached the wire that made the area around my 10amp fuse too large. Now I can't put a usual 10amp fuse in there without it falling out! Any ideas on how to make it stick muscleammo? Thanks again.

    Where do you tuck the harness? I cant seem to find a spot, it seems too tight.

    Awesome tutorial - one question - is that long red wire absolutely necessary? I'm not quite clear on it's purpose. Is that the new radio's main power source?

    I was installing a 7 inch dd Pionneer today on my 02 gti. I have the same kit as in the video, but cant manage to get the stereo in; It only goes a lil over halfway in. Im thinking it could be from all the wires from the back of the dd? Help

    • @timmyl2005
      @timmyl2005 5 років тому

      Connect it to the flux capacitor wire. Stay under 88 mph. Less you have your shoe laces tied tight if not get Velcro shoes from Walmart.

    I understand wiring red "switch power" to 75x, but what's up with the orange "illumination" wire? You added the 4 foot wire, but didn't show where it goes. Can I just wire it to the harness? 75x? Or should I splice into "dash adjustment switch" middle wire?

      Michael Watkins He's saying either one is fine. You don't need to do both. Choose which way you're going to do it, then do that. Don't do both.
