*NOTE* For those who've been asking, the metal structure on the front of the locomotive was temporary rigging for the IMAX camera. The camera had been mounted on the left-front of the engine's smokebox that morning from Vancouver to Skamania. What you see from 3:20 to 4:10 is members of the film crew removing the camera and placing it in a different location on the engine. Because they did not have time to remove the front rigging at Skamania, they ran with it the rest of the way to Wishram and removed it later that afternoon. The movie that 4449 was out performing for is called "Train Time", a documentary/educational film done in partnership with BNSF about the workings of a modern rail system. The film is being directed by Stephen Low, the man behind the documentary "Rocky Mountain Express". While the film will center mostly around modern freight trains, 4449 (along with possibly a few other steam locomotives) is slated to make an appearance. When I was a kid in grade school, our class went on a field trip - a train ride up the Columbia Gorge - thru tunnels all the way to Wishram. It was a cool trip for a 7 or 8 yr old boy - and loads of fun tangling our tongues over that name -- Wishram.
I do love to see a steam locomotive being operated properly like this!!! No black smoke from the stack and constant power/speed indicates that the steam cut-off is set perfectly and balanced with the throttle so the only visible exhaust is the condensing exhaust steam. It is always amazing that when the exhaust sounds are removed how quiet all that reciprocating and rotating machinery is and this video demonstrates that in spades. One of the best 4449 videos here on UA-cam.

Stafford Northern Railroad Locomotives aren’t supposed to have black smoke coming from the smokestack because that means there is poor fuel efficiency or the fuel is not being burned completely. An example of this was when 4449’s fire was run on diesel fuel in 1989. There was thick black smoke because the diesel wasn’t burning completely and they had to put in a lot because it emitted less heat than oil fuel. When the fuel efficiency is perfect and you’re only burning the fuel you need, the only visible exhaust will be the condensing steam, sometimes not even that.

Honestly, I feel sorry for anyone who had never had the chance to next to one of these huffing, puffing, majestic behemoth machines. There's nothing to compare to it.
My favorite one was BC&G #4 back when she was running at NCTM as Southern 604. Only working steamer that I got to climb up in the cab of back when she was running under her own power at the museum.
4449 lives up to her name of class, she brings that gorgeous pacific coast sunshine wherever she goes as she steams along and sings through her whistle or talking through her stack for her viewers. :) A reason her kind were called the world's most beautiful train.
OK .... starting at 7:00 this has got to be some of the finest pacing shots I've seen. I hope this video clip gets archived by every foamer out there. I hope in another 50 years another generation will see what pre-computer locomotive technology can do. Designed with slide-rules, utilizing decades of trial and error engineering, using American made steel, this is fine example of technology goodness. Bravo to you for this video.

She is owned by the City of Portland, Oregon. Yes, millions of dollars and thousands of man hours have been put into her in order to preserve her in working condition. It's all a labor of love. Long may she operate in order to educate the "diesel only" hordes who have never seen a steam locomotive or ridden behind one.
Sadly with all these climate&emissions mandates being forced on this world now..it's only a matter of time before the govt.orders these to be scrapped...
I wish I knew of this video before I stopped teaching! The pacing work is superb. I taught (computers/ technology) a section on the building of the Transcontinental Railroad and showed the students videos of steam engines in action. I'm 70 and remember seeing this and it's sister engines in service on the San Francisco peninsula and at Railfair in Sacramento. The first comment I got from a student after watching a steam engine was, "Is it on fire?!" I then explained how the locomotive works, in simple terms. This video could allow me to explain, or teach how it really works from the piston going back and forth, the valve gear, the firebox and boiler to the driving wheels. "Do you know the train moves forward or backward 80" on each revolution of the wheels?" Very amazing work. Thanks!

The locomotive was built by Lima Locomotive Works in Lima, Ohio, for SP in May 1941; it received the red-and-orange "Daylight" paint scheme for the passenger trains of the same name which it hauled for most of its service career. No. 4449 was retired from revenue service in 1956 and put into storage. In 1958, the SP donated the locomotive to the City of Portland, Oregon. The City then put the locomotive on static display in *Oaks Amusement Park*, where it remained until 1974. As a kid, I went to Oak parks many times and always spent a couple minutes gazing at ol' 4449. What a sight.

These steam locomotives amaze me. The hours and labor of the dedicated people who restore them. I have never seen a running one since I live on the east coast. At least not one the size of a 4-8-4. No Diesel Electric will ever inspire the awe of the massive Drive Rods and Power of the Steam Driven Locomotives. They have a sense of being alive, and untamed like a Dragon Breathing Fire. Those who have never witnessed these massive beasts have no understanding of them. We Lost when they did away with them.

I had the great pleasure of riding behind 4449 almost 10 years ago from Minneapolis MN to Winona MN and back thanks to a partnership with the Friends of the 261 organization.

My son and I love these old trains. We have the privilege of seeing them here in Chattanooga Tennessee at the Railroad Museum. If you have a chance get here and witness these amazing machines.
It is awesome to see this steam powered bit of history... the Columbia River Gorge is the perfect scenery for shots of this train... this train was leaving Vancouver WA one day as I passed over the I-5 interstate Bridge... I barely saw it as I passed under it... it had a diesel mixed in it that time... it was heading up the Gorge that day too

I remember the good old days, when I was a child, of the steam powered trains, we had to wait for to cross in front of my dad's car. Wow, what a sight!
I remember in 1951 we lived in Douglas Arizona, used to go to the depot and see the Sunset Limited and the Golden State (la to Chicago) pass through. Usually the were pulled by diesel at that time but the lesser trains, Argonaut and Imperial were still steam. A lot of the time they had cab forward as power and it was a major procedure to lubricate the locomotives during the stop. Great to watch. Unfortunately the lines between Douglas and El Paso were pulled up in the sixties and now the Sunset limited runs from Tucson via Wilcox, lordsburg, and Deming to El Paso. Great memories. The BNSF polished stainless steel passenger car consist looked good behind #4449. The stainless could use a buffer pad & some polishing compound. But they're still not as beautiful as the painted to match passenger cars #4449 had in her past. She truly is the most beautiful train in the world. Great video! Fantastic job filming the chase.
Most of the BNSF "stainless steel" cars have added on corrugated skin, and the metal they used has a natural dull look similar to the Pullman version of "stainless" cars. Or it might even be painted. Only Budd cars and some ACF cars from that era were all stainless or aluminum.

Grew up in San Francisco in the 40s/50s. Had friends in Palo Alto, we sometimes visited. When we did, the ritual was to go a couple of blocks to the SP mainline and wait for the Daylight to come thundering by. “Don’t get too close to the train, you’ll get sucked under!” The ground shook and the wind generated by the locomotive were awesome. How I wish we could all experience that today.
what a perfect scenery of steam train at night with a rainy weather its always satisfying with those lights on, plus the train is the 4449 daylight which makes it even more better and those silver cars rather than a mixed colors of coaches is a real beauty. it makes me feel better to see the daylight run without that diesel I hope they'll always let her run freely, just like this

Whenever I think "trains", the Daylight nearly always comes to mind. It's such an iconic design, that even those who aren't railway enthusiasts will think of this loco's image. I love that she's still in service and looking better than ever.
Love all the sound! I was lucky enough to be around when the last of the steamers were going the way of the dodo. The SP had a steam switch engine which ran along a track on the west side of Daly City, CA. Probably in the late 40's andc early 50's. I lived about 100 yards from the rails. Loved thse steamers then and love 'em now! Thanks.
A very good job on your production. Your shot of having 4449 slowly glide into the frame was very beautiful. Also on that shot was the capturing of the sound of 4449's piston and running gear. Exquisite. Another shot I liked your long shot of 4449 going across the water. Letting her come into frame and panning with her till the whole train was passed was something you don't see too often. I also enjoyed the last crossing. A nice low angle. Nothing like a steam engine when it's cool and damp! I fear though that after the accident in Denver this weekend steam's days maybe numbered. Everybody bows to the insurance man and rates will no doubt go up now. I hope not. That would be a sad day if nobody wanted to pay the high price. Railfans have got to be so careful. I hurt for his family. Sorry this was so long.

Anyone else notice that when he was driving beside the train the middle of the wheels and part of the arm turned red? There was also a point when the edge of the back wheel was red
The GS-4 and GS-5 Classes were some of the most beautiful if not _the_ most beautiful steam locomotives ever built. Not a statement from an impartial observer. I am old enough to have occasionally seen and more often heard 4449 and one or more of her sisters in service back in the Fifties on the L.A. Division. I do remember the steam whistle then had a higher pitch. When stopped or moving slowly it now sounds like a steamboat. In the shots where the locomotive is approaching the mic at speed it sounds more the way I remember it. That would be due to the Doppler Effect. It indicates to me that the tuning may not be that far off. I've also read that the GS-3, -4, and -5 had Nathan Air Chimes to supplement the steam whistle and the combo may be what we heard. Excellent video with good audio and atmospherics.

A diesel-electric is added on the private car excursion to provide HEP.. This train has a dedicated HEP car that is next to the last car. The 4449 cannot provide required electrical power to allow modern coaches to operate.
Well 4449 could generate electrical power in the ballpark of around 90 volts AC, unfortunately that is no where near enough to power modern private coaches. Some require 3 phase 480 volts AC and other are like your typical RV and need 240 or 120 volts single phase. It's all depends on how the coach owners have modified and retro fitted the coaches with appliances, air conditioning, electric heat, electric water heaters, outlets for devices even all electric kitchens and laundry rooms like Ringling Bros had..
This is a superb video, my 3rd time of watching. The pacing from around 6:40 and the long distance view that follows (until around 12:00) would be worthy of a video in itself. That pacing is almost hypnotic and is the best I have seen. Well done.
Even taking Amtrak from Portland to LA and Back behind a pair of Diesels is quite something, or it was to me this last May. These are *more* so in almost every way.

The 4449 is so beautiful. A milestone of Locomotive Design. When this Lady flying over the Rails through the USA, she is calling with her whistle:"Come alle here and watch me how beautiful I am on my old days. I am a Lady!"
The BNSF polished stainless steel passenger car consist looked good behind #4449. The stainless could use a buffer pad & some polishing compound. But they're still not as beautiful as the painted to match passenger cars #4449 had in her past. She truly is the most beautiful train in the world. Great video! Fantastic job filming the chase.
Most of the BNSF "stainless steel" cars have added on corrugated skin, and the metal they used has a natural dull look similar to the Pullman version of "stainless" cars. Or it might even be painted. Only Budd cars and some ACF cars from that era were all stainless or aluminum.

Great video. SP 4449 is such a beautiful steam locomotive, no wonder she's so popular. 7:39 is probably the best shot, seeing the side rods going around and hearing the rods clank around.
Steam, the penultimate visceral experience. This was the first big steam I saw running with the Freedom Train. She will long outlive my 69 years.

I worked on the SP from 1972-1997 retiring on 1-2-97 the day of the up merger with sp so I can say the same thing!

Grew up in San Francisco in the 40s/50s. Had friends in Palo Alto, we sometimes visited. When we did, the ritual was to go a couple of blocks to the SP mainline and wait for the Daylight to come thundering by. “Don’t get too close to the train, you’ll get sucked under!” The ground shook and the wind generated by the locomotive were awesome. How I wish we could all experience that today.

what a perfect scenery of steam train at night with a rainy weather its always satisfying with those lights on, plus the train is the 4449 daylight which makes it even more better and those silver cars rather than a mixed colors of coaches is a real beauty. it makes me feel better to see the daylight run without that diesel I hope they'll always let her run freely, just like this

Whenever I think "trains", the Daylight nearly always comes to mind. It's such an iconic design, that even those who aren't railway enthusiasts will think of this loco's image. I love that she's still in service and looking better than ever.
Love all the sound! I was lucky enough to be around when the last of the steamers were going the way of the dodo. The SP had a steam switch engine which ran along a track on the west side of Daly City, CA. Probably in the late 40's andc early 50's. I lived about 100 yards from the rails. Loved thse steamers then and love 'em now! Thanks.

A very good job on your production. Your shot of having 4449 slowly glide into the frame was very beautiful. Also on that shot was the capturing of the sound of 4449's piston and running gear. Exquisite. Another shot I liked your long shot of 4449 going across the water. Letting her come into frame and panning with her till the whole train was passed was something you don't see too often. I also enjoyed the last crossing. A nice low angle. Nothing like a steam engine when it's cool and damp!
I fear though that after the accident in Denver this weekend steam's days maybe numbered. Everybody bows to the insurance man and rates will no doubt go up now. I hope not. That would be a sad day if nobody wanted to pay the high price. Railfans have got to be so careful. I hurt for his family. Sorry this was so long.

Yes, it is sad to hear what happened with the UP 844. But I don't think mainline steam is dead because of it. We'll all just have to wait and see what the verdict is after the investigation.

Julian BIZDOACA I don't know for sure but it wouldn't surprise me as most that ran on coal converted to oil.
Yes, 4449 burns oil.

Anyone else notice that when he was driving beside the train the middle of the wheels and part of the arm turned red? There was also a point when the edge of the back wheel was red

The GS-4 and GS-5 Classes were some of the most beautiful if not _the_ most beautiful steam locomotives ever built. Not a statement from an impartial observer. I am old enough to have occasionally seen and more often heard 4449 and one or more of her sisters in service back in the Fifties on the L.A. Division. I do remember the steam whistle then had a higher pitch. When stopped or moving slowly it now sounds like a steamboat. In the shots where the locomotive is approaching the mic at speed it sounds more the way I remember it. That would be due to the Doppler Effect. It indicates to me that the tuning may not be that far off. I've also read that the GS-3, -4, and -5 had Nathan Air Chimes to supplement the steam whistle and the combo may be what we heard. Excellent video with good audio and atmospherics.
4449's original whistle was stolen many years ago when it was on static display.

Wonderful video of an even more awesome locomotive, a real treat to see the 4449 running at the speeds she was designed for and without any diesel backup.
A diesel-electric is added on the private car excursion to provide HEP.. This train has a dedicated HEP car that is next to the last car. The 4449 cannot provide required electrical power to allow modern coaches to operate.
Thanks, I mean a diesel power unit , I could have been more clear. And your right about the 4449 not being able to provide head end power.
Well 4449 could generate electrical power in the ballpark of around 90 volts AC, unfortunately that is no where near enough to power modern private coaches. Some require 3 phase 480 volts AC and other are like your typical RV and need 240 or 120 volts single phase. It's all depends on how the coach owners have modified and retro fitted the coaches with appliances, air conditioning, electric heat, electric water heaters, outlets for devices even all electric kitchens and laundry rooms like Ringling Bros had..
This is a superb video, my 3rd time of watching. The pacing from around 6:40 and the long distance view that follows (until around 12:00) would be worthy of a video in itself.
That pacing is almost hypnotic and is the best I have seen. Well done.
