    That was one of the most comprehensive coaster tests I’ve ever seen! Nice work! :D

    I'm so glad you included the demonstration of the features! I'd have never known without this... (Excellent video!)

      I didn't want to leave any room for doubt as to what they're capable of. ;)

    The demo at the end reminded me of one of those Family Guy scenes, where Peter does the same thing for an extended amount of time (like falling and saying "Ow" several times more than you were expecting), basically McFarlane running it into the ground. Very funny! :)

    Damn that book reading shot was so painfully long. Great video!

    That is a riveting demonstration on their use! I could not look away.
    I think the neighbors are going to get some new coasters.

      Thank you. I should have given a warning to prepare people for the ending.

    If you have a trim router you can sit it up so the bottom is facing up and then just use your round over bit like so

    Nice job, man! Coasters are fun because the patterns you can come up with are only limited by the imagination.

    After gluing up the block, I would have cut strips off for the coasters with a band saw. I have a GuidePro featherboard that makes it super easy and safe. Then you don't waste nearly as much material.

      Absolutely... not to mention the various sponsors that give free or discounted stuff to the content producers.
      I like the woodworking channels, but it gets a little frustrating to see so many of them doing the sponsored route. Not a fan of this practice. But to each their own I guess.

    Izzy Swan demoed a handheld "Y" shaped hold down for use holding short stock for a miter saw ... They seem quite effective.

    Man, that was a dramatic ending to this video. I was NOT expecting that at all. Glad you are ok!

      It was touch and go for a while, but they work ok. :)

    I'd take a scrap of 4x4 and double-stick tape the end of it to the left end of that expensive chunk of cherry and maple, like the 4x4 is a pencil and the coaster stock is the eraser, get 2 or 3 more coasters out of the project. Double-stick, over a 4x4 surface, should be more than enough to keep the miter saw from pulling it loose.

    These are good looking but because they are sealed the condensation might pool and run off. If they were not sealed the condensation might travel thru the end grain and leak out the bottom. Did you consider inlaying a piece of cork into the top of them?

    Noticed you used your new 8" jointer (we spoke at Weekend with WOOD). Hope it's working great for you. I'll check out the table build.

    Hey Brian, great video and coasters. If you do a follow up project video would you please go over if the condensation wicks through. Not trying to be a troll but I’ve always wanted to make these as gift but I’m not sure how they will work. Thanks and love your channel!

      That's a valid concern. In my case I applied several coats of poly (curing in between) until the pores no longer absorbed any more finish. I don't suspect that this will be a problem.

    How about cutting the rest of the block on the band saw and then running them through your drum sander?

    • @GarageWoodworks
      @GarageWoodworks  6 років тому

      The drum sander has an 8” minimum length for stock. Otherwise that should work. I might just carefully bandsaw it and see how clean the cut is.

    • @dschlic1able
      @dschlic1able 6 років тому

      You could use double sided tape to fasten them to another longer board.
