Today has destroyed any excitement I had for this season. Even if he did go down I would still back him to bring us back up the next season. Spineless and short-sighted from the board. They need a reality check
As an Owl I can say miracles do happen. However we sacked a manager (Xisco Munoz) who was hated by fans and team alike and who wasn’t fit to lick Des Buckinghams boots then got lucky with a wildcard. Wrong decision, I just hope you get someone in to work that miracle and you stay up. Chin up mate.
Really sorry to hear this jack it seems absolutely absurd to a Wednesday fan that the board has took this approach . i hope things work out for Des and the oxford fan base
Hi, SWFC fan here. From the outside this looks a ridiculous decision. If you guys were adrift at the bottom (like we were last season) then yes this would have made sense. Quite honestly not sure where you are going find anyone better than Des Buckingham. All the best.
I am so angry about this. Des is everything you would want. Local lad, great record abroad and in England, and made an unforgettable moment at Wembley for so many fans, myself included. We were always likely to go down, and i now i expect we will. I no longer have confidence we'll bounce back up if we go down. I was wanting to see the club in the new stadium, seeing Des making us an established championship team and thinking we were entering a new era for the club. I don't have the words. This is a joke. All I'll say is thank you Des, good luck at your next Championship role. You deserved better.
Met Des a few times in a local pub that I worked in (Bicester). Sound humble guy who didn’t want to brag. Proper down to earth and would hang out and have a few pints with his mates when he had time off. As a Boro fan I had no idea who he was as I never kept up with League One football. When I first met him I asked what he did for work and he didn’t want to tell me. Fast forward 10 mins and his face is plastered across the TVs behind him as he’s sat at the bar. A sky sports interview replay 😂 Bought me a fair few drinks in the 2 or so months I worked there and found him class. Did really well bringing you up and had a great run at the start of the season. Gutted for Oxford fans and really hope the board turn their decision around. Hopefully he gets some good job offers cos on a personal level I really feel for him.
As a Bolton fan I find this decision absolutely mind blowing. This guy is single handily responsible for you being in the championship. He completely out thought and schooled our manager Evatt at Wembley in May. How can it be that Evatt is still at Bolton and Des gets the bullet. Football is sometimes absolutely crazy...sad to say...see you next season I think Jack.
@@davidcrowley1985 hi I'm a Bolton fan also, and I'm shocked that decision of Oxford. I though am not a Evatt basher. I like him and you have to remember what he's done. Wembley 2 seasons running, when did that last happen, As for the loss at Wembley, that's not Evatts fault, it's the players on the pitch just nit performing and our best player getting nibbled in the 1st 2mins, If we don't go up this season then yes Evahas to go, but I think we will go up through the play-offs this season I'm sure of it ⚽️⚽️⚽️
Jack, Pompey fan here, couldn’t believe what i saw on sky sports this morning, i agree what a stupid decision. I hope they don’t regret that decision and hope Oxford stay up.
Des Buckingham , please come back to INDIA🇮🇳. Coach indian national team. We need national team coach. We know what you did in indian football. Oxford or England don't deserve you. Your place is in our heart INDIA🇮🇳.
As a pompey fan it baffles me our manager who you would understand being sacked was given a contract extension by 4 yrs oxford few bad results out the door tough sell to any potential manager
Pompey fan here. Ridiculous decision by the board imo. What the hell do they expect? The divide between league 1 and the championship is insane. Average mid table clubs are spending millions to tread water. Insane decision.
Unbelievable, I can't understand why the board would do that. The only person who will join us is Karl Robinson and I can say none of us will want that
No win situation. Fans complain if the board are too slow to dismiss an underperforming manager, yet they criticise when they take swift and decisive action. Ultimately this will prove to be a brilliant move, or condemned as a disaster. Good luck to Des as he takes charge of a League One side that might pass us on their way up while we head back to the ignominy of League One and, dare I says it, League 2.
Hey Jack. I have been a listener to you and the L1 podcast crew for a while now and always love hearing your passion and views and your footballing knowledge. I feel your pain and upset for the departure. I was surprised as everyone else, particularly when we took so long to sack Robbo, this was the polar opposite. However, i disagree with people who say i would rather get relegated and keep Des in charge. I am desperate to see us stay in the championship, absolutely desperate. Because if we go down, i cant see us coming back up and it could stall the new stadium and could be really detrimental to a lot of things to do with the football club. 1 win in 15 is damming and it was only getting worse. I couldn't see us getting another goal never alone a win. Would i have sacked him? No. But im trying to understand the boards decision and clearly they want results now and to stay in the championship. And that is something i want to see. But the way they done it is shoddy. My partner said to me what has gone so horribly wrong? At the start of the season we looked so good, we were competing, and even the games we weren't winning, we looked good and we were competing. I have to disagree with you slightly because currently now, we are not competing and being well, well beaten in games. Keep your head up and support the new manager. We're all oxford and no1 is bigger than the club. Juat a final thought someone mentioned to me who isn't an oxford fan. 'If we hadn't won promotion last season and were in the top half of L1 currently. Would we have sacked him?' Good question
Regardless of the poor run and results, what exactly is the ownership expectation for Oxford United this season? Could be that he great start in the opening two months may have given an unrealistic outlook, and once the squad starts regressing to it's level the owners have taken badly to it.
Can't get over this sacking you are doing better than all the so called experts forecast we sacked mark robins after only being 1 point worse off than last season, football is stupid, good luck for rest of season
Blackburn fan here (living in Oxford), this evening we've had reports that Wolves are trying to nick John Eustace from us. I really hope that isn't true/doesn't happen, but if it does I'd take Buckingham at Rovers in a heartbeat. A manager is ultimately only as good as the tools that he works with and Des has got the best out of what is still only decent League 1 squad at best. Whoever is in charge at Oxford needs their head checking, oxford aren't even in the relegation zone!
No manager will come now, no decent one anyway not if they have achievements like Des has and then after a bad month get sacked, thats absolutely shocking
Hey Jack, good to hear from you. I did NOT expect an Oxford "collapse", did not expect Oxford to walk the League either, but rather, expected a solid mid-table position, for the entire season. This is coming from a Wednesday fan. Yes, it's a long-term project, same like at Wednesday, one cannot deny this, Pep Himself couldn't just walk in and instantly turn Oxford into the next Manchester City.....actually City fans are calling for Pep's head because they're in a "slump", nobody was calling for Buckingham's head, the Owner(s) just thought they'd get some "likes" from the FANS.....well now..... Oxford's upper level management just turned the FANS, against them, and once that happens, there is no recovery for the "decision makers." Still, I don't think Oxford will be relegated, the Squad will make sure of that, it's a decent Squad. Anyway....
From a blades very harsh from the Oxford owners, Buckingham hasn’t had the backing just like Plymouth, personally I think they’ve destroyed the only chance of staying up now, no offence against the fans but the club obviously deserve it now as a club
I can only assume they have someone lined up and want to bring him in before January when the window opens. That's how it looks to me. I think it is a dreadful decision and grossly unfair on a manager who took the club into the championship and deserved the chance to see the job through. I'm a Pompey fan and all three of the promoted clubs are struggling to establish themselves as expected. Oxford made a decent start, but were always going to find themselves dragged into trouble at some point. It was inevitable just as it was for Pompey. To sack the manager in these circumstances is ruthless to say the least. It will be interesting to see how Oxford fans react if Robins gets the job.
I’m astounded mate tbh. He was doing an outstanding job given the fact Oxford were one of if the literal favourites to go down, you guys are fighting an uphill battle squad wise, financial wise, and he seemed to completely get it, and was doing a great job. Getting you guys up in the way he did, and getting you guys to compete as well as you have so far proved he was one of the better managers in the league, nevermind someone who deserved sacking! The last thing I feel you guys need is this instability, when you’re fighting such an uphill struggle like you guys are, the last thing you need is to upset the apple cart and throw everything good that you had out the window. Cos now if the new manager doesn’t hit the ground running the pressure will mount massively, and that’s the position the ownership have you put yous in when you were in a fine position anyway! You guys haven’t even been in the bottom 3 yet! I mean maybe with 5 games to go if you’re 6 points adrift maybe you press the panic button then, but to do it mid December when you’re 20th having been more than competitive is completely nonsensical. I really hope this doesn’t come back to to bite you guys but I really worry now it will. If the new manager doesn’t improve on what Buckingham did, the fan base will turn on the ownership and it can all go south real quick, when it never needed to
Even has a relegation rival looking on i genuinely feel sorry for you he did a wonderful job it sent ripples across the league everyone is quite shocked. The drama of football keep your chin up 💚
Hi Jack, as are you I'm completely lost for words why Oxford would sack Des, He got you promoted and now just because the results are not carrying on the way Oxford started, the board decide to say thank you, but No Thanks. Like you said he will get another top championship club,. Who the heck will want to come and manage a club who have 1 figure on the trigger if the results aren't positive, Crazy simply Crazy
It's not Stupid! it's Disgraceful, Disgusting! Do the Board think we should be running for Promotion? we should be aiming for 21st or above! That Man bleeds Yellow and Blue! I think this is a Karl Robinson Fallout they left it nearly to long! they've OVER reacted! OVER OVER Reacted! I'm SO SO Angry!
Weird one, certainly looked like you're were having a sticky patch but I never understand when a manager gets a team up but then not the time required.
From a Sunderland fan absolutely gobsmacked as what do Oxford expect this season. Just look at how Birmingham ended up with changing their Manager. Buckingham will walk into another job no problem, good luck for the rest of the season Jack as I think you are going to need it my friend 😂
Sorry to hear about this Jack. Im no expert on Oxford but it seems like the wrong decision. I hope the same doesnt happen to our Mous at Pompey. The fan base there would be devastatrd if the same thing happened to us
Let's see. It might be an ambitious move by the owners. I'm the same, think Des is top-drawer, and would have loved to see him in the job for 5+ years. But,if the owners are looking to stay in the league and compete next season. And they think they have the man lined up to do it. Its their decision. A pretty bold one. 1 Dessy Buck, 1 of our own. Cheers for everything
I've not seen anything to definitively suggest this was only the club's decision. It might be that Des himself needed to do this. He has spoken about his mental health during the dark moments of last season and it could be that his mental health is not where is needs to be now. Perhaps the very fact that he loves the club and wanted them to succeed so much has added such extra pressure and burdens unlike anything he has experienced before in management. He will be a Oxford legend now for the promotion and his exit will do nothing to diminish that. I wish him every success for the future and I am sure it will be bright.
Sad to hear this, your gaffer had you fighting through the division, very short sighted from your board no matter what transpired. Its a very hard division and this will not help your campaign one bit!
So sad that Des has gone, as an Oxford fan he will be remembered for a generation. But tellingly none of his summer signings have performed, and we were definitely heading for relegation under his stewardship. IF the owners put their hands in their pocket in January, and if we get in a new manager who has the experience to bring in the right players, we might just have a fighting chance to stay up. Our owners are worth billions, they have serious aspirations to be a top 30 club. Sadly Des is no longer the man they see fit to take us there.
Derby fan here.... That's twice this season with a weird managerial sacking. Coventry and now this. I quite liked a Des Buckingham Oxford. This is why Paul Warne is the longest serving with only two seasons, because owners are trigger happy and something needs to be done. What happened to the long rebuild. Look at some of the managers that have left clubs and fans are shocked. Rosenior and Hull, Robins and Coventry, Eustace at Birmingham. I think others can think of more.
Am I the only one who doesn’t get the hype with him? Let’s be honest he fluked promotion with a very lucky play off campaign in both legs against pboro and Bolton. 1 win in 15 isn’t good enough for any club and he has no track record in this league, at least someone else may give you a chance say a warnock or a mowbray, Oxford have been the worst side I have seen at the SOL this season, best of luck saying up
Tbf Oxford were going down regardless who was in charge. They have a league 1 squad with limited quality and I called this even after their very good start. Over a long championship season that squad of players is nowhere near at the level. So I don't get the sacking, go down, keep their gaffer who has a proven record now of taking Oxford up and go again. Poor from Oxford. Feels reactionary
You'd have to be blind to not see the huge difference between L1 and Championship. You can't just suddenly make up for that in 1 season (probably more). At Pompey we're getting very mixed performances and that's because it is tough playing regularly against sides with budgets way beyond ours. I'll take the losses knowing we still have a good manager who will learn a lot from this. Yo-yoing these leagues seems to be the norm now so maybe see Oxford again next season. Under Buckingham you'd have been well set for next season. A bit of a reality check is needed in Oxford's boardroom. Unless they've suddenly found several million down the back of the sofa! 😂
1 win in 15......you're being sentimental..(.i was )I was gutted...but now the dust is settling, I think the owners want bigger things soon and cant wait for Des to learn this league will it be a disaster ?😂
We, Coventry City, have played Oxford twice so far this season, and although we won both games at home, I thought Oxford looked a decent team. They played some good stuff from what I saw. Best of luck for the rest of the season anyway.
Sorry jack I don't agree with you saying it's a stupid sacking, performances tactics have been appaling of late and if it was anyone else apart from Des we'd of been calling for his head a few weeks ago. I just hope they have someone lined up or boxing day will be very uneasy for the board, I understand the frustration and anger
Football is a results business, 1 win in 15 is nowhere near good enough. Problem for Oxford was the victory over us (Bolton) in the final at Wembley, scraped into the playoffs got to face an over confident Bolton team who just did not turn up where as Oxford took full advantage.
I would have him at Bolton in a heart beat. Oxford potentially have the worst squad in the league and he is not even in the relegation zone. Could now collapse for Oxford and go back to a midtable bottom half league 1 club. Must be brutal right now for Oxford fans.
Totally agree, mate. Gutted when you consider amount of time they took to sack the last manager just don’t understand what the board is thinking. I smell a rat something is going on. I think that Des was pushing for us to stay up and board at different ideas. I hope I’m wrong. That’s how it looks to me. i’ve had a bad week this week I did not expect this Ludacris thank you Des Buckingham for what you have done for our club and what you’ve achieved you not be out of a job for very long you rank up there with Jim Smith but look on the bright side buddy your CV will have on it promotion to the championship have a good one💔💔💔💛💙💛💙🇺🇦🇺🇦🇺🇦🇺🇦🇺🇦🫶🫶🫶 come on you yellows let’s get up that league and start believing stick together on this one and the fans get behind this team you can do this
I’ve been thinking about this Jack. I feel the same as you sick the board of Oxford UNITED should have the decency to give the reason for SACKING OF BUCKINGHAM I SHOULD GIVE THE SUPPORTERS AN EXPLANATION FOR THEIR DECISION. THEY DEFINITELY OWE THE FANS WHY THEY DID THIS THE FANS WAS FULLY BEHIND THE MANAGER SO WHAT WAS THE PROBLEM READING IN BETWEEN LINES? WAS IT BECAUSE OF THE TRANSFER WINDOW IN JANUARY BRINGING SOME MORE PLAYERS IN WHICH MEANT PUT IN THEIR HANDS IN THEIR POCKETS? I’M BEHIND YOU AND THE SUPPORTERS ON THIS WE DESERVE AN ANSWER. 💙💛💙💛🇺🇦🇺🇦🇺🇦🇺🇦🫶D B 🫶🫶⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ THANK YOU🏆🏆🏆🏆🏆🥇🥇🥇🥇🥇🥇🥇🥇🥇

This is a stupid decision. I really hope you stay up, mate
Completely echo what you said , as an Oxford fan myself very embarrassed by what the board have done . Still finding it hate to fathom it
Poor decision... I don't claim to know Oxford United well. Mark Robins inbound??? Good luck the rest of the way!
As a derby fan - wtf
1 win in 15......you're being sentimental..(.i was )I was gutted...but now the dust is settling, I think the owners want bigger things soon and cant wait for Des to learn this league
will it be a disaster ?😂
I do think it was very stupid decision, but ive not seen a lot to suggest he's as good as you think?
We, Coventry City, have played Oxford twice so far this season, and although we won both games at home, I thought Oxford looked a decent team. They played some good stuff from what I saw. Best of luck for the rest of the season anyway.
Yes you can go on about how it’s a shit decision but they obviously have a new one in mind
Sorry jack I don't agree with you saying it's a stupid sacking, performances tactics have been appaling of late and if it was anyone else apart from Des we'd of been calling for his head a few weeks ago. I just hope they have someone lined up or boxing day will be very uneasy for the board, I understand the frustration and anger
taken a part of my love for this club away this has
I'm sure he'll be wanted somewhere else soon!
His city is waiting Mumbai City fc again, buckinghams blue army
Just heard. I am shocked. Football littered with barmy owners. Could he do a job at the Den? and maybe you can hire Neil Harris.
Football is a results business, 1 win in 15 is nowhere near good enough. Problem for Oxford was the victory over us (Bolton) in the final at Wembley, scraped into the playoffs got to face an over confident Bolton team who just did not turn up where as Oxford took full advantage.
Bristol Rovers fan in peace I think the guy was hard done by I hope he is on our radar🤞
I don't get why we sacked him he got us to the championship??😢😢
20th Newley promoted why would they do this
Foreign ownership of English football clubs has made it all about money...starts with the PL down....community doesn't matter anymore
I would have him at Bolton in a heart beat. Oxford potentially have the worst squad in the league and he is not even in the relegation zone. Could now collapse for Oxford and go back to a midtable bottom half league 1 club. Must be brutal right now for Oxford fans.
Another pompey fan here. Crazy decision. What alternative universe are the owners living in?
Totally agree, mate. Gutted when you consider amount of time they took to sack the last manager just don’t understand what the board is thinking. I smell a rat something is going on. I think that Des was pushing for us to stay up and board at different ideas. I hope I’m wrong. That’s how it looks to me. i’ve had a bad week this week I did not expect this Ludacris thank you Des Buckingham for what you have done for our club and what you’ve achieved you not be out of a job for very long you rank up there with Jim Smith but look on the bright side buddy your CV will have on it promotion to the championship have a good one💔💔💔💛💙💛💙🇺🇦🇺🇦🇺🇦🇺🇦🇺🇦🫶🫶🫶 come on you yellows let’s get up that league and start believing stick together on this one and the fans get behind this team you can do this
There are some seriously bad ownwers in Football......
😢😢😢😿😢😢😢😢😢⚽️⚽️⚽️⚽️😢🥲😂😂😂😂
of course he had to be sacked hopefully with a new Manager Oxford may be able to stay up
🤡
💙💛💙💛🇺🇦🇺🇦🇺🇦🇺🇦🫶D B 🫶🫶⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ THANK YOU🏆🏆🏆🏆🏆🥇🥇🥇🥇🥇🥇🥇🥇🥇
So sorry for you Jack … as a Pompey fan I feel for you
