Tommy Cooper could get his audience howling with laughter just by merely walking on the stage. He was truly one of the greatest stand up comedians in the he world. RIP Tommy, you are saddly missed. You left a void in entertainment no one has yet come close to fill. I doubt no one ever will.
A mate of mine was musical director at one of his shows. 20 minutes in. Not a single word uttered. Dek said that no one, not even the band could move for laughing. Genius.
@@johnflynn5044 He served seven years, which would be from 1940 - 1947. The whole military force was not discharged as soon as WW2 ended. Some served for decades after WW2 ended.
He was also involved in some rather dodgy dealing after getting involved with some officers who were running a racket stealing supplies. Can't remember whether of not he got sent to the glass house!! Barry Cryer recounted a story about being in a souk in North Africa and trying on a Fez. The stallholder said "Ha, ha, ha. Just like that!" Barry asked him if he was a fan of Tommy and the Arab replied that he had no idea. It was just that every time someone from Britain tried on one of his fezes, they said the same thing...
There's a bronze statue of Tommy (9 feet tall) in his hometown of Caerphilly, South Wales. He has pride of place right in the middle of town, opposite the 12th century castle. He's wearing his trademark fez and open-mouthed smile. You can't help but smile back.
I used to see Tommy almost every day when I was a kid. He lived on Barrowgate Road in Chiswick, not far from where I went to school. Tommy was huge but was such a good, nice man.
I’m absolutely delighted that Americans are reacting to the late great Tommy Cooper. He was both a brilliant comedian and magician. I think it was the Royal Variety Performance when I watching it on the telly with my Mum and Dad when he collapsed on stage. Many people in the audience actually thought it was part of the act. As the curtain went down. I think they went on a commercial break. It was only after the show had finished. It was announced that Tommy Cooper had died from a massive heart attack.
In real life, when Tommy would tip someone, he would tuck something into their top pocket and say “have a drink on me” - only for them to find out later it was a tea bag 😂
Tommy Cooper was very successful on stage, and he moved to TV, had his own long-running series, but few knew that he had the worst stage-fright. He had to have a drink before he went on stage, and after many years, sadly he had a heart attack and died on stage... to gales of laughter. Terribly sad he died, but he was a huge, tall, gangly, awkward man who could cause hilarity even before his act began. Getting from behind the curtains to the table with his magic apparatus ( never anything elaborate ) could take a minute or two and he warmed up the whole audience right away. He also told what would later be called 'Dad jokes', really obvious and silly, but somehow always successful.
I grew up with Tommy as a neighbour and doing little magic shows for the local kids in the garden when he was home! His mum made dure every child had a drink and sweets too! Those days were the best 1970s Wales! ❤❤ a true gentleman was Tommy! Rest in peace never forgotton xx
I had the great privilege of having my parents take me to one of his shows when I was about 12 or 13. He was utterly hilarious from the second he walked on stage and I can remember bragging about it in school for weeks after. I still feel lucky that I was around in the same decades as he was. The man was a genius.
I remember in the 1970s, Tommy Cooper came to our local theatre and my parents took us to see him. He was a great comedian. I also highly recommend Les Dawson and Ken Dodd.
Dude, you have no idea. Tommy Cooper could have a room in absolute tatters by just walking on stage and turning his head. And he was not alone, we had Morecambe and Wise, The Two Ronnie's, Frank Carson, Les Dawson, Frankie Howard and many more. I'm so glad to have live through that era. Today's generation will never laugh like we did.
You laugh because professional silliness makes you laugh. Your funny bone has been tickled. Tommy was a very funny man, and a skilled magician. He could afford to put humour into his tricks. Thank you.
he was the greatest magican, that could make a trick look like it failing, then catch you at the end, it was he spent hours and hours perfecting it, your supposed to see how its down, but that last bit, is how did he do that as some said, the glass bottle, bottle glass, was legendary
“Have a drink on me” as he stuffs something into a taxi driver’s top pocket while getting out of the cab. As soon as he’s gone, the excited, hopeful driver puts his hand in his pocket and pulls out… a tea bag.
I, like millions of others, grew up on comedy geniuses like Tommy Cooper and think we were so lucky to have been around during their heydays. Such a funny man and not a swear word ever used to get a laugh. That is talent.
Tommy was a legend. If you get chance, check out his trick with the box with the flaps and the cube. It highlights his skill at making the trick very obvious, while messing it up....then getting it correct at the end.
Tommy was such a comedian sadly he had a sever heart attack live on telly and in front of an audience and collapsed on stage everyone thought it was part of the act sadly he died either on the way to hospital or in hospital
He was a supreme, Master, of comedy. He could have folk struggling to breathe.. He was actualy dangerous. Im sure sime folk had heart attacks, strokes, epiletic fits, ect, laughing.
Tommy Cooper was not so much a magician as a comedian who pretended to do magic. As you may expect, he was a more than adequate magician. He had some good tricks up his sleeves.
Well what funny world it's great too see an American/Canadian reacting too tommy... Some suggestions for ya bro... Micky flannagan, Billy connoly, Lee Evans, Peter kay, Dylan Moran,... Just a few off my favourites thank me later.. Cheers just scrolling your vids I see you have done some off my suggestions and red dwarf too I grew up on that show
I recall a hat seller in an Arab souk/market, a bit of a tourist area being filmed. He would try to sell his red fez by putting one on and doing a Tommy Cooper impression, 'jus like that, ha hah ha..' When asked about it, he said he'd never heard of, or seen Tommy Cooper, but he adopted the patter because 'All the Brits, they put on the red fez and go 'Jus like that..ha ha ha.'
You should check out the British comedian Tim Vine who messes about on stage with props in a similar style to Tommy Cooper. He's not a magician though, just a brilliant one liner.
As for him joking that he did not feel so good himself, the poor sod died on stage of a heart attack and it took a while before the audience realized it was not part of the act.
love that you love Timmy Cooper . You are so young which shows comedy is timeless except it isn't. A lot of comedy and yes - including Monty Python now looks horribly dated! I would have thought within this reduced appreciation, Tommy would now even then have been a bit niche and very British focused. I love that you love it right now - today! Tommy would be so happy and buy you at drink at the bar..or at leat put a tea bag in your jacket pocket so you could enjoy a drink later.
I got near 30 Tommy Cooper video up , the quality is generally higher too. All the ones you've seen have been cut. A couple of other recommendations I have up. I will say, if you see a bunch of videos, he does reuse his jokes and tricks often since his stuff spanned several years "Tommy Cooper - Bottle glass, glass bottle - 1970" "Tommy Cooper - Cooking with duck - 1973" "Tommy Cooper - 4 eggs 4 glasses - 1970"
The beauty of Tommy Cooper is that he learnt how to do the trick properly and then how to muck it up. Its like Les Dawson who could play the piano but he also learnt how to play it as though he was getting all the notes wrong. If you havent watched Les then you need to go check it out

It is a real joy to nsee Tommy still being appreciated so long after he left us, what an amazingly clever man.
RIP Tommy Cooper. Keeping it 100 and proving he was a legend. The man died on stage. Keeping the show going until the very end.......
I remember seeing that, it was live on TV and everyone thought it was a joke, part of his routine, even in the theatre.
He was 6 foot 4 and was a vetran, being called up in 1940 and serving for seven years.
A great entertainer and still missed.
The war only ran for 6 years and five if he signed up in 1940

I initially thought that it was part of the act, but quickly realised that something was badly wrong. RIP Tommy.
London here! He was bloody magic - natural comedian! Glad you get it!!
I grew up with Tommy Cooper. He was brilliant and very clever. Your reaction is fantastic. Thanks for bringing back some great memories. 👍

It was so sad that that happened, he was such a legend,I love him so much, his comedy was so funny, being there for that must of been heartbreaking ❤
They thought it was part of the act.
ialso watched when he died, i was on holiday with my grandparents i was 8 years old
Still see it in my minds eye the now
I remember watching it aswell. It was the royal variety performance
Unique👍👍👍👍 Born in Caerphilly Wales to a Welsh father and English mother
I remember in the 1970s, Tommy Cooper came to our local theatre and my parents took us to see him. He was a great comedian. I also highly recommend Les Dawson and Ken Dodd.
You need to watch a film called The Plank, it starred Tommy Cooper and Eric Sykes virtually a silent film but very funny visual comedy.
Keep up the good work, mate.
Your reactions are just like my own when I first saw Tommy on the tv back in the day.
👍thanks tommy xx
My Dad adored him. This age of humour was innocent and lovely.

nice thing about that irish joke is they were always portrayed as stupid in jokes at that time but that was the smart answer.

Also the box with the cube, where you can hear the box sliding before he opens up the other side to show nothing.

He was a really good family entertainer!
More of Tommy Cooper..please
I worked with Tommy just before he died , have a lovely picture with him in front of the Floral Pavilion New Brighton around 1983-4 ish
Great reaction as always
What a amazing family his brother was special to
He was truly funny, one of the best. I managed to buy a compilation dvd and am so glad I bought it.

One of my favourite jokes of his, I’m on a whiskey diet I’ve lost 3 days already
Luv it. Thanks for the memory.
Excellent entertainment, back in the 70's we only had 4 tv channels & most of it was light hearted entertainment.
I only remember 3 BBC 1,2 and ITV.

Watching old comedy is bittersweet. Now wearing a fez is “cultural appropriation”, even having a heart as pure as Tommy Cooper
I miss this, proper comedy 😂❤😂😂
He is so so FUNNY 😅😅😅😅😅😅😅😅😅😅😅😅😅😅😅😅
Saw Tommy Cooper at a very drunken, midnight cabaret, at Butlins in Somerset, back in '77. Even funnier live, still got the ticket stub
A nation cried when he died, still one of our best comedians.
