The .380 is a very unjustly underrated cartridge. It is actually a pretty vicious little round, and at relatively close range can deliver significant hydrostatic shock and considerable penetration. If one understands and accepts that it's just not a .40 or .45 or 10mm, and has the will and the skill to work within those parameters, the .380 is a very acceptably effective sidearm.

My first EDC was a Smith &Wesson. 357 magnum. Years later I switched to a Glock 23 in .40 caliber. Years after that a Glock 26 in 9mm. Currently, my every day carry is a Glock 42 with Trijicon HD XR Night Sights and a 9 round ETS magazine fitted with an XGRIP for a full three-finger grip. I load the magazine with 8 rounds maximum, plus one in the chamber, to ensure 100% reliability. Ammo of choice is Underwood Extreme Penetrator 380+P. This combination has very little recoil, is very controllable and EXTREMELY accurate! I carry it 24/7 in a pocket holster and honestly it's so light and compact that I forget it's there. The best self-defense pistol is the one you never leave home without!

I bought one of these a couple of weeks ago and promptly took it over to an indoor range. I had one box of ball and one box of defense rounds. The first thing I noticed about the gun is how easy it is to handle. It feels good in the hand and the recoil is very light and well matched to the balance of the weapon. The second thing I noticed is how accurate it was. Amazing little groups right away with both rounds. I have been shooting since I was 4 or so and have owned over 100 handguns, including many Glocks (love the 34). This is a pecularly fun gun to shoot. It puts a smile on your face. Carrying it concealed is a bit cumbersome. Mid back carry is best for me if out running. It is heavyish, but if confidence and placement mean anything, this gun fills a strange little niche. There is a video out on the Yt that has 3 women shooting the LCP, a Bodyguard, a Colt Mustang, and the Glock 42. They overwhelmingly chose the 42 for ease of control and trigger performance. I would agree. You might want a little Keltec or similar for a mouse pocket gun as an experienced shooter, but I think just about anyone could pick up a 42 and master it quickly while enjoying the task. Mine will stay in the collection!

.22 long rifle, even when fired from a small pistol, is certainly deadly. However, I don't believe this is the best self-defense caliber for most of us. When I worked at a gun store a decade ago, we used to discuss the delicate, unpredictable trajectory of this round once it enters living tissue. We would joke and say if you shot a bad guy in the chest, the round could end up exiting through his nose. The main thing is that shooting in self-defense is intended to stop the threat from hurting or killing you. A bad guy strung out on PCP could take ten rounds of .22 long rifle and then die in the emergency room 12 hours later. What's important is, did your actions stop him before he could harm you? For me personally, I generally regard 9mm (with expandable ammunition) as the smallest self-defense round. I wouldn't recommend using a .22 unless you're an 84-year-old lady, and that's the biggest gun you can handle.

About every video regarding the 42 begins with "I really wanted a single stack 9mm" or something of that sort. You have to think, the whole reason why they came out with the .380 first is so that every would buy it, then come out with the 9mm and everyone will buy that one too. If they came out with the 9mm first, very few people would purchase the .380. It's all a part of a strategic business plan. The single stack 9mm is coming.

    Hickok,
I bought this gun after watching this video you made. This is one of my favorite EDC guns to carry all year long.
After receiving the gun, I first put Talon grips on it and then some Trijicon Night Sights. The spare magazine I carry is a 9 round mag with a X Grip extension to match the polymer on the Glock 42.
Anyhow, thank you for your videos and for inspiring me to start our own Gun Channel.

My partner shot a dude 3 times cent mass with a 45 acp, and the dude survived. Bullet size is irrelevant, bullet placement is everything. I love a 380 for low recoil, accurate, and easy to conceal. If this gun was a 9mm, it would have to much recoil

I think this was excellent market strategy by Glock. They introduce at G42 in .380 even though everyone wants it in 9mm. Glock lovers will eat it up. Then in a year or so they'll put out the 9mm version and more people will buy it. That way the double dip the market.

My LCP's are now retired. The 42 is small enough to pocket carry, but is a much sweeter shooter. The best competition to the 42 is a Kahr PM9, which of course has better terminal ballistics, but at the cost of much more recoil. So, if the 42 remains a reliable firearm, I think it will be a home run for Glock, so long as consumers don't mistake it for a primary concealed carry gun (you should still have a G19 or similar on your waist).
    Good video as usual Hickok.

I received a G42 for my birthday this year. I love it. I added grip tape a tungsten guide rod and night sights and the +4 mag extension on all but one magazine.
I shoot Federal and Blazer mostly. No feed problems as of the first 1500 rounds.
This pistol has become my favorite carry gun. I carry appendix and it simply disappears under a shirt.I gave the 43 a try and found I like my 19 and 17 better in 9mm. Only my G21 is more fun to shoot amongst my Glocks.

I just received my G42 yesterday. I must say, it really feels good in my not too large hands. It also points and grips well. I haven't been able to go up to the range yet because of the weather, but it is going to be very mild and in the 70's in a couple of days. I have done some extensive dry firing with it, and I can say that if it fires well as I expect a Glock to do, I will seriously consider this as my daily EDC. My daily now is a G19 with a modified grip, or a Sig P938. However, I am not one of these people who think a 380 isn't enough, or isn't powerful enough, to be a good defensive weapon. I watched some extensive tests on UA-cam on ammo quest, and have acquired a couple of boxes of Precision One 90gr XTP cartridges, and they were showing, on 5 shot denim and gel test, minimum 12 to 14" penetration. And that from a Taurus 2.8" barrel. This G42 has a 3" barrel, and is a Glock, and I expect full reliability from it. I will give it a thorough test with several types of FMJ and JHP ammo, and if it shoots as I think it will, I will load it with the XTP's and carry it with the same confidence as my 9mm's. I, personally, think Glock has hit a homerun with this little jewel.

My ruger .380 max has a good amount of kick. The Glock 42 is a lot easier to shoot. The energy goes straight back into your arms rather than the ruger pushes the front of the gun up causing you to find your sights again. The 42 stays on target a lot easier. But half the ammo.

I read in a gun magazine years ago that the little gun you have with you has more knock down power than the big gun you left at home. The
.380 has almost the energy of a .38 special. Great video. We'll see that Glock in a 9mm before long, but I don't know why they didn't make it smaller. Maybe marketed for countries where people can't own a 9mm, and can't carry.

Hickok45, awesome review of the Glock 42. Yep I've got one and have no malfunctions, zero at all. Shot different ammo, not a malfunction at all. I like the Glock 42 and will carry when ever I need to, due to weather or the situation. Those who dont like Glocks, thats cool. I would ask them what make, model of car or truck do they drive. Ones going to say, the Ford is better than a Chevy, or Dodge. And one might say you are all wrong, the Toyota is the best. We have all read about the guy who drove over 200,000 thousand mile on a Chevy truck, or maybe it was more. Toyota's over 300,000 miles. I would like to know if you found out what caused that malfunction. Might be the magazine, or bad round from not enough power charge, contaminated gun powder, I've had a few over the years. Dirty gun, dirty magazine? Shooter error, not with you Hickok45, you got you fundamentals down in concrete. I like to know if you found out what may have caused the malfunction. One of the tests I do to a new gun, is shoot it fast and slow, different shooting drills, shooting 50 rounds, clean the gun. Then shoot the gun over several months when going out to the range, but not cleaning. I track the number of rounds fired until I have a malfunction. If i do what caused it, just got dirty, bad round, shooter error. With this knowledge I know if I can trust the gun for me, my kids, my wife's protection. My kids are not kids, but there still my kids. What would I say to someone looking to buy a Glock 42, you can't go wrong. I've been carrying a Glock for years and trust them with my life and my family. Ive carried other guns over the years, they were fine, had malfunctions with them to, all guns are tools, they can break. What ever gun you decide to carry, take care of, just like your wife, or one day you gun will not take care of you. Always be safe every time you handle a gun, make sure it is unloaded every time you handle no matter if 5 minutes ago you checked it and now your handing it to a friend. Be safe always.

As usual Hickok is correct: "it's a gun". We should be celebrating Freedom of Choice with all the various manufacturers and calibers instead of being an elitist about a particular gun maker or caliber. I love my G20 but I'm happy that my couson loves his M&P 40 and my buddy loves his Baretta 92 9mm. I have another buddy who loves his James Bond PPK on .380. Since I posted my last post on the G42, I have made some mods to mine. First, I sent the G42 back to Glock and they modified the mags to make them feed better. They installed a new slide lock lever and a new trigger. Upgrades from the original. I was having trouble with the slide locking back with the mag not empty. After much testing, I came to the conclusion that I was kind of "thumbing" the slide lock lever while firing two handed, causing it to lock back at different times. I removed the slide lock lever and put a little washer in the space that the lever occupied. I know it does not lock back on the last round any more, but I don't care, I want total reliability, and I do love the little Glock and it fits my hand perfectly. It is totally reliable now. I added a +1 mag extension from Galloway Precision, I added Talon rubberized grips for a great grip, Ameriglo night sight on the front, and Glock metal night sights on the back (G19 sights modified to fit the 42). Lehigh Defense has just come out with a 380 round called Xtreme Penetrators which is one heck of a 380 round (see ammo quest test of this round) So I'm gonna pack the G42 with confidence now. I know people wanted this in 9mm, but the perfect 9mm single stack already exists. It is called the M&P Shield. I put Talons on it too, and Ameriglo O/G night sights. My Shield has no thumb safety, and in my opinion, there is no small 9mm better than this on the market. I load it with Lehigh Max Expansion 105gr. These are my two EDC's. Both of these pistols conceal, and shoot, extremely well. I am very happy with both of them.

Glock made the 42 in .380 because they are trying to go after the women and young beginner shooters who want a soft recoil hand gun. It seems as though Glock has silently changed their slide release lever for the 42. I saw a side by side comparison of two 42's, one manufactured in January, and the other in March. The portion of the slide release that contacts the notch in the front of the magazine follower has been reprofiled, and was rounded off a bit on the portion that is closest to the ammunition in the magazine. I wonder if the Buffalo Bore's wide hollow point was actuating the slide release as the next round in the magazine was being fed in.

    • @hickok45
      @hickok45  10 років тому +9

With further study, I believe that's exactly what it is. I've honed mine down a little, but I need to work on it just a little more. Since mine seems fine with all ammo I've tried, except the Buffalo Bore, I don't have any serious problems to deal with. Still, I'm going to carefully take a little more off the release.

hickok45 I suspect the tooth profile is only half the story. My wife had same issue with normal ammo. The stop's spring might be shade too weak. When the gun muzzle-flips, the inertia of the stop makes it rotate against the slide and toggle it.

    My opinion on calibres:
I do not own a gun, never have fired a gun, live in a country where guns are very strictly regulated (Ireland).
But I watch a lot of gun videos on youtube and know a thing or two about them.
For an every-day carry gun, why is calibre important? Common sense would tell me that shooting a guy 5+ times with .22 is going to put him down or seriously injure him (if hit in the right spots). At the end of the day, a bullet is a bullet, it is going to do damage.
Please correct me if I'm wrong (which I very well may be)

    • @terrywaters6186
      @terrywaters6186 7 років тому +6

      You're not wrong. Here's why.
We have in the U.S, this organization called the FBI that had a very bad day once so, ignoring the fact that not hitting their target was the main problem, they went on and laid the blame on the firearms and ammo police have been using the world over for the last hundred years or more. They decided the problem was that they were inadequately armed and thus published a new standard. So now everyone here thinks this minimum standard for an FBI agent is the minimum needed for every Walter Mitty walking to his car at Walmart at night and anything less will only to serve to make the bad guy angry at you. Plus it helps sell more expensive guns and ammo. It's not unlike the outdated belief that in the U.S.that anything less than a V-8 engine was inadequate for moving a car down the road.
You make an excellent point about .22 caliber which was the caliber of choice for Mossad agents that hunted down the perpetrators of the Munich Olympics massacre. I for one do not feel inadequately armed carrying a .22 because for one thing I'm confident I can shoot it accurately and rapidly.

I bought my first Glock in December. It was the 42. I couldn't get it to cycle, and I tried 6 brands of .380. I called Glock customer service, they sent me mailing labels, and they said they would check it. I also had to send them the magazines that came with the gun. Glock customer service rep was very nice. Today I got my 42 back, about two weeks. I noticed they gave me 3 new magazines. They magazines I sent in had the number 2 on the end. The new mags had the number 3. So I am thinking they upgraded the magazines. Also it looks like the feed ramp is different. I have not fired it, but I bet it will cycle now. While waiting for the 42 I went and got me a Glock 43. Hickok45 sold me, I like his wisdom on shooting.

XDs owner here. I always enjoy your videos Hickok. And while I do agree that this gun is smaller and lighter than the XDs 9mm, you have to remember that the XDs 9mm is the exact same size as the XDs 45 (which I own.) It's safe to assume that they did that for the sake of simplicity, as both guns share most of the same parts. If they had designed a 9mm version from scratch I'm sure it would be smaller. Point is, you have 6 shots of 9mm, or 5 shots of 45acp, in a gun that is only slightly larger than the Glock 42 chambered in 380. And the Glock is larger than many other 380's as you pointed out, so overall it does not make sense to buy one (in my opinion.)

Just a thought on the Buffalo Bore. If it is loaded much hotter than the other rounds (which I hear they tend to be), and especially if it the 42 is a blowback model (which you indicated), it may have caused the slide to cycle too quickly, and not allowed the next round to feed in the shorter time. Just a thought.

I believe it boils down to one simple thing. Glock knows that if they produce the .380 first, some people won't wait to see if the 9mm single stack comes along. They will sell BUNCHES of .380s to people that would Not buy a .380 but will because it is a Glock.and Glock does not make a single stack. - - Then down the road, they will come out with the 9mm single stack knowing that a lot of people that bought the .380 model, will shell out the bucks for the 9mm single stack too, no matter what. They get the best sales numbers that way. - - - DON'T put your best stuff on the market first! You will miss sales that you would have gotten to people that didn't want to wait. - - Jus my opinion but I bet I'm correct.

I bet you're right. They're not stupid, actually, they're really smart. They know what people want. People want the single stack 9mm. So they're making sure they get sales out of their other new models first.

Love The 42, I Bought It For My Girl 2 Carry (Not That It's Only For Women 2 Carry, I Would Feel Decently Confident Carrying It). Hickok, Scratching Your Magazine Hurts My Soul Bro!! My OCD Needs Perfection. Good Vid Bro!

Guess you didn't read correctly... I said I bought it for my girl, and I said that I would feel decently comfortable carrying it... Like if it was my only option?? I shoulder holster full size guns, never compact size.

filoIII Personal preference. Guns within the same caliber feel better in one's hand opposed to other people, not to mention shooting sight and kick. A .380 Kahr and Glock are both easily concealable. You simply choose your preference. At the end of the day, the likelihood that you'll ever shoot a gun in self defense is extremely low for the average American. A gun is basically cologne - it makes you feel good that you have it on. Pick your scent and stay out of harm's way.

filoIII it is longer than the kahr, but its also skinnier which for carrying in a pocket, id rather have skinny and longer than fatter and shorter

I love my Glocks, but it is obvious that Glock has no idea how to make a true single stack magazine. The magazine for this pistol is huge when compared to the Kahr 380. The same thing for the .45 caliber Glock 36. Its magazines are huge compared to the single stack magazines on a 1911. And since there are companies that are selling 9mm's that are smaller or equal to the size of Glock's .380, why even bother with a model 42? Give us the single-stack 9mm that we have been asking for...oh, wait, I almost forgot, never mind, I already have a Walther PPS. Great video Mr. Hickok. Thank you.

That's the great thing about all the different choices of guns. Me personally I love this gun but you are absolutely right it is a bit big compared to all the other guns in its class.

Thank you Hickok 45. Nice demo, very informative. We are not allowed them in the UK. We have to keep the shotguns and rifles (BA etc no semi autos except .22") in the locked gun safe`s. We however can keep a hammer, pick axe handle, Samurai sword etc in the home. Years ago I had a 1911 and a S&W model 29, and a few others all banned now. I had a M1 7.62 a Lee enfield .303 and a Garand that had the breech slugged and it took 7.62 (308). The number was 4929.... I forget the rest. The LE was D6428 and the M1, I forget. Mini 14 also .223". Semi-auto full bore rifles are banned in the UK also. Keep using your guns or you will lose them and once they are gone you will never get them back (legally). Keep up the good work, I love it. Mike.

I read a review reporting the same issue with lockback and the guy reported that it happened with hot ammo. Pretty unfortunate since you really need a hot .380 for it to be viable for defense.

I believe the feed problem was due to a magazine issue. I have the newest version with a dozen of the new mags. No issues at all no matter what I feed it. I have yet to try any of the new polymer rounds through it. Anxious to see how those do.

    • @OklaBoondocks
      @OklaBoondocks 4 роки тому

Tbh you don't NEED a hot .380 round for it to be viable with current ammo these days. Plenty of very effective HP rounds offered currently that actually produce wider and equal wound channels than some 9mm. I've been behind a weapon for 35 years for a living and have ZERO issues trusting my life with a .380 round. I will usually stagger rounds in my mags... HP/HB/HP/HB ... repeat..... for penetration and expanding capabilities at my disposal when carrying.

  • @RainmanE350

The Glock has a longer barell than the competitors (Kahr etc). There is potential for making the 380 round more effective than it is in short barrels of the competition. Choose your ammo wisely. The Glock is much more reliable than a Kahr. Much more. You will shoot it more accurately. The G 42 is light and thin. Go for it!

I think hickok would argue the reliability point.... since he really likes Kahr for a carry gun as is apparent through watching many of his vids.

singletrack29349 He represents one data point, I, too, have only my experience with a PM9. Check out all the QC failures on KAHRTALK.COM. Too high a percentage of their PM and CM series need gunsmithing work. Broken followers from out of spec feed ramps, cracked magazines, slide locks which don't work. It has gotten worse in the 2 years since I sold off my PM9

RainmanE350 I was thinking about getting a kahr. I need a little pocket gun for summer. I usually carry a g23, and i have a pf9 but am not sure that i want to trust my life to it. I had a LCP but thought the trigger sucked bad so i got rid of it. I have a lightweight j frame from s&w custom shop and its nice, great trigger, but only 5 rounds and its thick. I want something at least 6 rounds and magazine fed, small, lightweight, dependable.. Any thoughts? What did you go to after getting rid of your kahr?
I dont mind paying up to $600 or so, but dont want a $3000+ 1911 compact or some other custom pistol.

TAC-Z If you're willing to spend $600... look at the Sig P238 or P938 .... just a suggestion. My buddy likes his bodyguard 380. I just carry an XDS 9mm IWB.

My Glock 35 was locking open on certain ammo brands as well. It turned out that some 40 S&W bullets were catching on the slide lock lever and lifting it up. My Glock armorer removed a small amount of material from the slide lock lever where it usually touches the mag follower and that cured the problem. The best way to see if this is your problem is remove the slide and place a full mag in the gun and push the top round forward and see if the bullet touches the tab on the slide lock lever.
