The WNBA is an inspiration to my grandma. She was paralyzed for 13 years but one day while a WNBA game was on the TV she was able to get up and go turn it off.

Back in 2006, this girl who I went to junior high with was going to sing the national anthem at the NY Liberty game. I was a teen and went to a private school so I had no ID. The tickets were at will call for me and my boy. The ticketing lady wouldn’t give me the tickets because I couldn’t “ prove “ who I am. I told her respectfully who would want to steal WNBA tickets. She thought about it and gave them to me 😂.

The New York Liberty had to do that. They were losing money playing in Madison Square Garden, they had to move to a smaller 5K seat arena to keep operating costs low

It's not even the wnba being less athletic and dunking less than the NBA. Wnba "athletes" are far from it. They look extremely uncoordinated, not athletic at all, and don't seem to even know basketball. It just looks like a playground game or pick up game. If I were NBA players, I'd mention female Olympic athletes. Those girls are elite, and entertaining to watch. There's just something about watching another individual master and perform at the top of their craft. Don't see that in the wnba, and if you do it's too few players. They alone can't represent the league entirely and save it.
Completely agree. Every time I see WNBA players, they look so slow and don’t even seem to jump that high. Compare that to watching Simone Biles jump 10 feet on the air in the Olympics. Or if you wanna use a team sport, women’s volleyball. They truly are amazing at their sport. WNBA players just aren’t entertaining as athletes.

Lower WNBA pay until they're making a profit, and then slowly build from there. If it's at about $100,000 now, cut it to $50-60 grand on average, more for better players, less for worse, until you're in the black.

I went to a WNBA game. Seats were like $26 after taxes and I still left in the third quarter because it was unbearable to watch. I was more upset I paid for the parking at the venue

The funny thing is EVERYONE says lower the rim… but in the WNBA highlights I only see one or two attempted dunks…. Whats gonna fix the dribbles, the shots, the goofy back to back plays…. Sure a dunk would be nice I guess? But I don’t watch the nba bc of dunks I watch it and most ppl watch it bc of SKILL…. Women in my opinion don’t move fluidly enough to have certain skills or to make them look good so even if women start dunking they will be soft dunks… PLUS the Euro leagues pay women way more so why don’t they just go over there? Like they have options the WNBA is just one league

People get hooked onto the NBA because of posters or the potential. And it looks more natural because it's not soo tall. If you're having to calculate how to throw something onto a cliff or tall shelf, then you will move less fluidly because there is less comfort.
Lowering the rim will produce less airballs and missed layups especially at the end of games when fighting fatigued

not only that but there are multiple instances of them making a series of such poor plays that they become confused and forget which basket they are supposed to be running to, and they all just switch it in their minds mid play when they see the person with the ball running to a hoop, and they play defense against a team trying to score in the wrong hoop... I really like the fundamental game in wnba however the game is boring to watch. No lobs, no dunks. I barely see any one getting crossed up. The only exciting plays are from good team work and passing

I heard a point made that I never thought of. A women reaches her athletic peak faster than a man. A guy is going to start slowing down around 32 give or take. For a women it's more like 26. The reason tney don't want high school or college girl getting into the league right away is due to the small size of the league.Players will have to be cut or retire younger. Even if the league becomes more popular they can only add maybe 2 more teams. There would be no more 15 or 20 year careers. It would be about getting all the top college players into the league every year. They'll have existing NIL deals and sponsorships.
Gate keeping the youth is another reason this league will always be trash. The NFL is a young man's game even more so WNBA IS TRIPPIN

What's truly amazing is that the size of the ball in the WNBA is smaller and the 3pt line is closer to the rim but making a suggestion to lower the hoop is met with dismissive and/or combative tones. If that is the reception you get for offering a suggestion then I say leave them to sink or struggle until they gain some humility. When they start to complain just plug your ears.

I love watching women’s college basketball but can’t get into the WNBA. Some of these ideas would probably help.
I disagree - sports might be entertainment to you and I, but it isn't to anyone who plays the game. Basketball has to remain basketball, otherwise your watching a circus. Lowering rims, making the 3pt line shorter or other suggestions that change basketball into something else shouldn't be done.

Volleyball is a great example. The nets are lower, which allows the women to hit, block, jump serve, etc. Volleyball is also one of the only pro sports where the women make as much as the men or more in many cases, because they actually sell tickets.
Why is it so hard to explain basic economics? If i was paid to play a sport I love, while my employer was negative in revenue, i would count my blessings. I also wouldn't talk crap on the men subsidizing my failing company.

I practiced religiously at my local park as a kid. By 8th grade I could dunk on that hoop. Not fancy windmills just a basic get in over the rim dunk. I could hit any shot at any angle on the court at that park. I quickly realized when I played games at school and other gyms my park was a little lower than high school gyms. I practiced so much at my park all I had to do was practice 30-45 shots before the game and slightly adjust my release point to get comfortable. To hear any professional complaining about making adjustments makes me cringe.
Their pride and thumbing their noses at the work involved in building a fan base that'll sustain profits is why the league is failing, I've always advocated for lowering the rim, I get geeked and hyped watching rec games bc they'll put it at 8.5ft and I get to see some middle age guys turn back the clock to dunk hard af. entertainment always has to come first.
I felt the WNBA had more hype and excitement during its infancy with the Houston Comets dominanting. Remember that team? Oh right they don't exist anymore. Imagine having a team that won 4 championships in a row become defunct in just over 10 years of its existence.
Remember the Three Time WNBA Champion Detroit Shock led by Bill Laimbeer.. Oh right they got sold and became the Tulsa Shock that folded and are now the Dallas Wings…

The other part of this equation that usually gets left out is that most people just don’t have time to follow another league. I get that the WNBA season occurs during the NBA season, and that might bring in some basketball purists, but I suspect a lot of people are just going to watch another league/sport like MLB. People only have so much time and the WNBA is way down the list of alternatives. If you don’t like it, then seize the means of production, massacre dissidents, control the media, and distribute the goods after calculating prices using labor theory of value. Or just lower the damn hoop.

If the worst NBA team played against a WNBA team made up of their best players, how many points would the WNBA players score?
If both teams played hard and they used the men's/NBA ball the score would be around 150 to 22. If they used the women's/WNBA ball the score would be 170 to 30, and if we are talking playoff intensity the women may not even break double digits in scoring, they would be very easy to lock down with good defensive NBA players.

if you wanna watch a good female pro sports league, a new womens hockey league just started, and its really promising and entertaining AND fast paced
I think basketball in particular demands an extreme amount of athleticism to be watchable, and women just don't have the height and musculature to reach that bar. Hockey seems much more doable coz it's more hand-eye coordination and reflexes, plus being able to skate well which can be developed with time invested.

The record for women’s vertical jump is 26 inches. They need to adjust the rim to reflect the ratio. They just need to lower the rim to 9ft the moment one woman dunks on another the sport will blow up.

So true. Tons of sports have incredibly talented athletes, but they don't draw crowds. If you don't sell tickets, get views on TV, sell merch, etc, you can't expect to make the same money. The top curlers in the world are very talented. Same with table tennis, like he said. Same with every fencers, high jumpers, and every other sport you usually only see in the Olympics. If people only watch you in mass numbers once every 4 years, you aren't going to get paid the same as sports that sell out coliseums all season long, every season.

When I played on mini golf tours, we had to pay very high entry fees, because that was the only way to fund the prize pot so players got paid for winning. Professional drivers have to bring sponsors with them to get a seat in a car. Why do WNBA players get paid to begin with when the league doesn’t turn a profit? And the first opportunity to actually gain popularity and corporate sponsorship comes along wrapping in a pretty ribbon, and they leave her off the Olympic team🤦🏻

I used to play for a semi pro soccer team, we'd get between 2000 an 4000 fans at games, we got paid $1000 per month, if WNBA players started getting huge contracts it would be an insult to all the semi pros out there.....

I think the MAIN reason for the WNBA was when they became a LGBT league. I remember when Swoopes left her husband for a woman and the league celebrated that like it was a good thing. She left her husband, not cause he cheated but because she fell in love with the assistant coach. That turned a lot of people, myself included off. Since then, they have doubled down on it being an alphabet league and even focused their kiss cam on same sex couples. Imagine being a conservative and going to a game with kids and that is the primary focus. It is a huge turn off. Even most of the players being studs and the known sexual harassment of straight women that has been downplayed even though there are players on record saying it happens............sorry I just don't see it ever being mainstream.

i havea solution for the wnba to even surpass the NBA. have them play in shorter sexier uniforms. i would definitely watch that over warriors vs lakers.

Everyone claiming that lowering the rims would make the WNBA more popular are dead wrong. EVERY SINGLE ASPECT of women's basketball is completely unwatchable, from the dribbling to the passing to the shooting to the defense to the general athleticism. Watching WNBA players is like watching middle school boys basketball, which is about the skill level that WNBA players are at.
Shaq saying "all that's missing is the dunks" is peak comedy. A few more clumsy dunks won't make a bit of difference in WNBA ratings. Nobody will EVER want to watch that crap, even if the rims were lowered to 6 ft.
