Easily my favorite of the franchise. Love the back story of young Indy - why he hates snakes, why he has the scar on his chin, etc. And the chemistry between Ford and Connery is fantastic.
Also, how he got his famous hat.

Last Crusade does a nice twist on one aspect of his look.
The idea that Indy's entire personality is formed on that one day is such a pulp origin story that it's perfect for the series.
@@LordVolkov It's common for expanded universe material and fan fiction to reveal that Fedora (as he's credited in the film) is actually Abner Ravenwood, which does make a great deal of sense.
As a guy who grew up watching Connery's Bond pull off incredible escapes, it was hilarious watching him bungle the chair escape and set the room on fire.😂

“We named the dog Indiana.” Funnily enough, George Lucas actually did have a dog named Indiana. She was an Alaskan Malamute and was the inspiration for Chewbacca in the Star Wars films.
And Indy actually WAS named after that dog.
I love the whole scene when Henry Sr. says: "She talks in her sleep."
The look Indy gives him and the sheepish smile he receives in return are priceless especially when you realize that Indy got sloppy seconds from his dad.

As I understand, that line was improvised on the spot by Connery, and the look Indy gives him is Ford's ACTUAL reaction.

Henry keeps calling Indy 'Junior', but when Indy was hanging on the edge of the crack he finally called him 'Indiana' showing that his son means more to him than the Holy Grail which he had been searching for for his entire life.
This is absolutely the best of the Indiana Jones movies, IMO. Love the mix of history, legend, and action. The chemistry between Connery and Ford is undeniable even with the humor and the father and son relations. Having the backstory of Indy's youth ties a lot of questions together that really needed to be told.
Regarding Indy's dad's line about wanting to tell him something... it was just that he loved him.
For all of Indy's life, his father was a cold, stubborn, work-obsessed old man who never showed him any affection or love. when Indy 'died' with the tank going over the cliff edge, Indy's dad, for the first time in his life, realised what Indy meant to him. Thus he was heartbroken at his loss, and ashamed of himself for never taking even five minutes to sit down with his boy and tell him that he really did care about him, despite all his bitterness and aloofness. As he says, he didn't tell him ANYTHING, and he's horrified at himself for it.
Hence why, when Indy turns up again, his father immediately pulls him into a tight hug. He realised how close he had come to losing his son, and how little time he had ever spared for him. It all comes together in the ending too, with Henry Sr calling his son 'Indiana' for maybe the first time in his life. Throughout the entire film, he's called him 'Junior'. Throughout it though, he's gained respect for his son, realised his own mistakes, and has begun to set them right, showing his son genuine respect at long last. That's why Indy turns away from the grail, it wasn't any kind of magic spell being broken, it was just hearing his father finally putting INDY above the grail.
God, I love this movie.

@@crankfastle8138 Understanding the implications of a line in a movie isn't 'headcanon', champ. It's called paying attention to what's being shown to you.
At the end when Indy is reaching for the Grail and his tells him "Indiana. Let it go." Is so powerful because the whole movie his dad was obsessed with the Grail and was the reason for their estrangement. In the end it wasn't the most precious thing in his life. I think Indy realized that in that moment. Such a beautiful father-son moment 🥹
Connery shooting the plane's tail and sayin' "they got us!" always makes me chuckle 🤭
This movie is the ultimate father and son story!
The original opening scene to the 1988 Screenplay by Chris Columbus had Indy battling ghosts in a haunted Scottish castle, but this was deemed too similar to Spielberg's Poltergeist.
Another draft had Indy battling The Monkey King over the mystical Foundation of Youth.
It was settled that Indy would team up with his dad to fight off the Nazis for the Holy Grail.
Sir Laurence Olivier was considered to play the role of Henry Jones Sr, but fell ill with Pneumonia and had to drop out.
Gregory Peck (To Kill A Mockingbird) was considered to play the role, until Sean Connery was cast
Laurence Olivier passed away in July 1989, two months after the films release.
The film was a box office and critical success, making $474 million dollars ($930 million dollars today) against a $50 million dollar budget.
It won the Oscar for Best Sound Editing.

Fun Fact: Sir Sean Connery and Harrison Ford wore no trousers during the shooting of the entire Zeppelin sequence. It was a hot set.
Clean Rats Fact: 2,000 rats were bred for the production. Breeding them specially was necessary, as ordinary rats would have been riddled with disease.
Authentic Battle Damage Fact: Harrison Ford cut his chin in a car accident in southern California when he was about twenty years old. In the movie, this cut is explained by young Indiana Jones (River Phoenix) cutting his chin with a whip.
Authentic Costume Fact: Most of the uniforms worn by the Nazis in the Berlin book-burning scene are authentic World War II uniforms, not replicas. A cache of old uniforms was found in Germany and obtained by costume designer Anthony Powell to be used in this movie.
Young Indiana Jones Fact: Harrison Ford nominated River Phoenix to play him as a teenager, having worked with him before on The Mosquito Coast (1986). When describing how he prepared for playing the role, Phoenix explained that he didn't really base his portrayal on the Indiana Jones character, but on Harrison Ford. So he observed Ford out of character before acting his part.
Dr Tyree's philosophy class is right down the hall - Dr Tyree irl was Harrison's philosophy professor at Ripon College (yay Wisconsin!)

Yes, George Lucas did the story for all of the Indy movies, it’s his creation; he just didn’t want to be responsible for directing
This shows the foolishness of giving directors all the credit for a movie.
Which was for the best. Lucas has never been the strongest director, but he's an incredibly imaginative storyteller.
@@northwindkey His actual script writing is weak too especially his dialogue. He's very good at laying out a framework though that working with the right people can turn into something really special.

FYI the title "The Last Crusade" didn't mean it was the last adventure. The three knights who found the grail were part of the first crusade, and the Joneses finding it for presumably the last time made it the last crusade. Indiana was the name of George Lucas's dog, who also inspired the character of Chewbacca.
The rapid aging of Donovan was one of the best effects I'd ever seen at the time. It was a very early example of morphing technology.
The most impactful moment for me in this movie is that his father never calls him Indiana ever until he really had to get his attention. Which proves he’s stubborn ,same as Indy. But he isn’t an idiot to not know what his son prefers to be called. It’s a beautiful moment at the end which makes Indy realize his dad dose care.
Sean Connery was only twelve years older than Ford, but they had such great chemistry. This is my favorite film of the series.
Harrison Ford is the one who suggested to Steven Spielberg that River Phoenix play young Indiana after having worked with River on The Mosquito Coast, where River played his son. Harrison said that River looked more like he did as a teenager than any other young actor in Hollywood.
The Hindenburg disaster was pretty much what killed blimps as means of transportation, happened a few years after when this movie is set
River Phoenix is great in Running On Empty, which earned him his first and only Academy Award nomination. And of course him starring with Keanu Reeves in My Own Private Idaho.
This movie happened at a moment of transition in my life. The final scene of Indy and his dad and Sullah riding into the sunset still resonates with me.
It's unbelievable what perfect casting River Phoenix was as young Indy, aside from looking a lot like young Harrison Ford, the way he perfectly embodies the spirit and personality of Indy as a teenager is remarkable. Those opening 10 minutes are a wonderful reminder of what a talented actor River Phoenix was, and what an absolute tragedy his untimely death was.
This is definitely my favourite film in the series, aside from having that brilliant opening, the music is wonderful as ever, I love the lighter and more comedic tone of this one, and Harrison Ford and Sean Connery make for an unbeatable double act. It's a fantastic conclusion to the original trilogy, to the extent that I kind of wish that they didn't make any more after this (for what it's worth, I don't think Kingdom of the Crystal Skull is _that_ bad, but it's definitely nowhere near as good as the original three)
IIRC Harrison Ford hand-picked him for the role after they had done The Mosquito Coast together, and for those very reasons.

There was a show called "young Indiana" which added a bit more to the lore of Indiana Jones.
It's stories where a teenage Indiana Jones meets notable figures of the early 1900s.
I remember one episode where he meets Tolstoy
When Indy's father says "I never told him anything", he basically just means he was never emotionally vulnerable with Indy, never told him how much he loves him, etc.
I think this is one of Connery's best roles. He was quippy as Bond, but you really got to see his comedic side in this film, a proper family movie. You can tell he loved the role.

I love how the intro shows us how Indy got his fear of snakes, how he came to using the whip, how he got the scar on his chin, and how he got his hat.
This is the favorite Indiana Jones movie after Raiders for a lot of people. I remember when this came out and people absolutely loved it.
Real testament to Connery that he played a nebbish old college professor and a total badass Russian sub captain in the same year, and he seems totally at home in both roles.

The chemistry between Harrison Ford and Sean Connery is what makes this my favourite of the series. What's kind of funny about the father/son portrayal between the two characters is the fact that the age gap between Harrison Ford and Sean Connery is small.
Lesson learned today: find yourself someone that looks at you as V looks at rock formations around Petra.
Despite only being 11 years difference in their ages, Harrison, Ford and Sean Connery, make a fantastic father and son duo, a great Father’s Day film
My favourite of the trilogy. It took what made Raiders so enjoyable, and built upon it with Indy's backstory, the inclusion of his father, as well as more locations. Not to mention Indy actually getting the grail (even though he lost it in the end due to Elsa) was a more satisfying final act, than him basically spending the finale of Raiders tied to a pole until the villains brought upon their own demise without him having to do anything.
I remember Spielberg and G. Lucas engaged Sean Connery being Indy’s father because James Bond had inspired Indiana Jones’ character.

The Last crusade isn't referring to the last Indiana Jones movie. It's called that because it's the final quest for the Holy Grail.
Partly true, but I do think I recall back on the day they hinted that the name also referred to it maybe being the last one.

Important to note: Indy and his dad aren’t immortal now. The immortality effects of the grail stop when you pass the seal in the temple. “That is the boundary and the price of immortality.” Edit: The grail would likely still work outside the temple, and that’s why it collapses to try and stop anyone attempting to take it out. Someone pointed out “what’s the point of having it guarded if it becomes a useless cup past the seal?”
I’d assume the things Henry wanted to tell Indy were along the lines of “I’m proud of you and cherish you/love you, you’re very accomplished, I’m sorry we weren’t closer and I made you feel less important than my studies.”
But wouldn't that mean his father's bullet wound would reopen and he would die?

The way I see it, you have to keep drinking from the Grail (within the temple), probably once a day. If you stop, then the immortality will cease effect and you pass on. And as the knight said, the Grail cannot leave that temple - so you could never drink from it outside the boundary. The knight seemed relieved that he could pass on, now that someone would take his place as the guardian. Though it's possible that having drunk from it at least once gives you a strength beyond normal, which would explain Indy's survivability in some incredulous situations in later movies (no spoilers).
@@bwiedor In the Mr Sunday Movies video he says it’s been theorized the grail pretty much gives you a fresh start health wise, and that’s why he can still adventure pretty well

You absolutely must watch River Phoenix in "Stand by Me". All the actors did an amazing job in that movie, but he (in my opinion) gave the best performance.

23:26 Yeah, the zeppelin 'airships' were a big thing back then for air travel. The Hindenburg disaster in 1937 (one year before this film took place) and how widely that event was covered in news led to a decline of it as a suitable form of air transport. I believe it was 1940 or so, just as WW2 was about to begin in earnest, that they were entirely phased out.
What Indy's dad meant about wanting 5 minutes with him, was having time to emotionally connect with Indy, since he was an emotionally distant father when Indy was growing up.

To me its the greatest trilogy ever made I cant even describe how much I love these films, also yes its still a trilogy in my eyes haha
4:46 so a fun fact, this brief scene of young Indy and Henry Jones Sr. living in Utah, has been explained as being right smack in the middle of Indy's formative years, as outlined in the hit TV series 'The Young Indiana Jones Chronicles'.
Honestly, the show is worth checking out because it provides so much background about Indy's childhood, you see his mother, how time strained the relationship between father and son, and even see where Indy gets his love of knowledge/archeology, as well as watching him grow up very quickly during World War I.
The show was broken down into two chunks of time, Indy's childhood from 1908-1910 when the family goes on a literal global trip as his father has been invited to guest lecture at various universities across the globe. And then from 1916 until the latter half of the 1920s, where audiences see Indy enlist in the Belgian army, fight in the war, return home, and go through various adventures in New York, 1920s Hollywood etc. all while across the show he meets/interacts with various historic persons including Lawrence of Arabia, Pablo Picasso, Princess Sophie and her father Franz Ferdinand and so on.
By "rightful owner" the Sheriff means the person who found it... i.e. the guy with the hat. The law doesn't recognize what he did as "stealing" the way Indy does.
Raiders may be a perfect film, but this is my favorite. Connery and Ford together is exponentially iconic.
This is the best of the three. It's how i prefer to think of Indiana Jones' end, riding off into the sunset with his dad and his pals.
You’d enjoy the early 1990s TV show “The Young Indiana Jones Chronicles”. It had two phases: Indy’s childhood and then his late teens / early 20s. Episodes alternated and occasionally had combined cameos. All were originally narrated by “old Indy” aged 90+ but those “old Indy” scenes were only kept in the televised and VHS versions, they removed them from the DVD releases later.
This is the best Indiana Jones movie not only for the back story but just the acting.
This is the film that made me want to be an archaeologist when I first saw it at the age of ten!
I also had the joy of visiting Petra in 2009 after my first archaeological field season, and one of the things that blows my mind so much about it is that it feels *exactly* like the end of _Last Crusade._ To get to the city of Petra you actually do pass through the same slot canyon they show in the movie: it's nearly a mile and a half long, and in parts as narrow as ten feet from one side to the other. And then all of a sudden the canyon abruptly opens up and you come out right in front of Al-Khazneh, the very same building they used for the temple. If you ever get the chance, V, please do visit it - it's a spectacle that no picture can really do justice
I remember seeing a "making of" and they said when they were thinking about who could portray Indiana Jone's father, Spielberg said "There's only one person who could play Indiana's dad." He went on to explain that he meant, the character of Indy is so epic, only another epic actor could fulfill the part of his dad...or something like that. I'm paraphrasing of course.
When River died years and years ago, it gutted our generation. He was the golden child in that family and would have really been an A-list actor today.
My favorite Indy movie. Also has the best conversation in the whole franchise. When discussing sleeping with Elsa.

V, the actor playing Donovan (Julian Glover) played General Veers in The Empire Strikes Back, and Hitler (Michael Sheard) played Admiral Ozzel.
Connery was unbelievably perfect in this role. On the level of RDJ/Iron Man and Depp/Sparrow.

After he thought his son fell off the cliff. I think Henry Jones Sr wanted to tell his son how much he loved him and how proud he was. They were the only things that are important.

This is my favorite of the Indiana Jones films! Hands down.
- There was only a 10-year age difference between Ford and Connery. They approached Connery because James Bond, the role that made Connery a star, was a huge inspiration for Indiana Jones. There are lots of little nods to the Bond films in this film as well. Like Donovan shooting Henry with a Walther PPK (007's handgun in the Bond films).
- River Phoenix was cast as the young Indy because he had just recently made a film with Ford called 'The Mosquito Coast' and played Ford's son. When you watch that film, it's easy to see Phoenix kind of acting a bit as Ford does...which he brought to the young Indy role. Side note, 'The Mosquito Coast' also featured Helen Mirren, who is now playing Ford's wife again in the Paramount+ series '1923'.
- You might not realize it, but Alison Doody (Dr. Ilsa Schneider) was also the Governor's vile wife in 'RRR'.
- Originally, this was the swan song for the franchise...so the "Last Crusade" part of the title was meant to have a double meaning. However, they made two more since.
- The film cemented a friendship between Ford and Connery, who from all accounts got along famously, that lasted until Connery's death.
And she just happens to have a collection of whips...
One of the greatest adventure films ever made. The characters, the acting, the score, the cinematography, the ideas... Just brilliant fun.

Yes! I’m glad you saw this movie! It’s one of my favorite Indiana Jones movie and technically my favorite sequel to Raiders of the Lost Ark!
If you want to see more from River Phoenix, "Sneakers" is a great choice. A great cast and a really fun, enjoyable movie all around.
One of the writers, Jeffrey Boam, created a short-lived wierd western TV series with a very similar feel to this movie starring Bruce Campbell called the Adventures of Brisco County Jr

Just for your information, the Zeppelin was a very common way of transoceanic transportation back in those days. The dock of New York City was at the top of the Empire State Building.
She frequently criticized things for “not making sense.” Perhaps after watching the “Indiana Jones” films after this one, she’ll have a deeper appreciation for 1 of the 2 best adventure films of all time.

As a parent Indy's dad becomes more and more relatable. There are so many things that you want to show and tell your kid but so often they aren't mature enough or in the right space to pay attention to it, so you push off having those conversations hoping for a right moment later.
There are no other movies. This is a trilogy. This is the end of Indiana Jones.
Trust me.
I visited Petra last week while on vacation and I HAD to come back and comment here just to brag. I'm a grown man and I almost tear up when I was walking through the rocks and suddenly the Treasure appeared before me. It's stunning.
I've seen many reactors double-take when they realize Indy & Henry are Eskimo brothers, but I'd never seen any do a triple-take until seeing V do it here.

FYI Sean Connery is also in alot of James Bond movies as well. I Highly recommend starting that series with him.
A great movie to watch with River Phoenix in is Sneakers. It has an all star cast; Robert Redford, Sidney Poitier, Dan Akroid, Mary McDonnell, Timothy Busfield, Sir Ben Kingsley, and James Earl Jones. It’s a hilarious suspense comedy
Fun fact. This is indeed the last Indiana Jones movie.
what i find most amazing in thi, is that the treasure in itself doesnt matter, Henry was a man of faith, and he looked for the grail as a godly mission, but when he got there, he realized that this was aready enough, fiding it, and knowing that his son understood enough of god's path that he managed to pass trough all the trials and reach the end, he was now sure that there was a god above that watch over us, that life has a meaning, and that he had a son that he loved that he could live this life with.
If you didn't recognise him or his distinctive voice, the actor playing Sallah is John-Rhys Davies who played Gimli in LotR and voices Treebeard
I love how Indy talks about "This is usually when the ground falls out from beneath your feet" and in the end... IT DOES!
This is my favorite of the four, with Raiders being second, then Temple of Doom, and Kingdom of the Crystal Skull coming in last. It will be interesting to see where the 5th one ends up in people's rankings.

@VKunia Must be special watching all the excitement, story, and characters in Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade for the first time. I'll never forget watching it at the theater as a kid. It solidified my Indy fandom right then and there. I've always loved this film and the rest of the Indy films.
River Phoenix is in the movie Stand By Me as child. As a young adult he did a movie with Robert Redford and Dan Ackroyd, Sneakers.
Lucas co-wrote Indiana Jones with Spielberg.
The line about Iine about Indy being named after the dog, is a nod to Lucas's Alaskan Malamute.
During the time when Lucas was writing Star Wars, he would drive around Northern California, with his dog; Indiana sat next to him. This furry co-pilot he had became the basis for Chewbacca.
Another fun little fact relating to Star Wars is that Michael Sheard appears as Adolf Hitler, whom Jones briefly encounters at the book-burning rally in Berlin.
Although a non-speaking role, Sheard could speak German and had already portrayed Hitler three times during his career. He had also appeared as Admiral Ozzel in The Empire Strikes Back and as Oskar Schomburg in Raiders of the Lost Ark.
In the same scene, Ronald Lacey, who played Toht in Raiders of the Lost Ark, cameos as Heinrich Himmler.
Also, Julian Glover who played Donovan appeared in The Empire Strikes Back as General Veers.
The "Last Crusade" part isn't meant to mean it's the last film of the franchise, it's a reference to Indy making the "last crusade" to find the holy grail.
After quite a lot of years and watching this movie regularly. I've finally made a realization or just a personal canon about the Grail and the Seal...
The grail does not bestow immortality. It gives you continuation.
Water in it becomes an elixir that will sustain you and prolong your life as long as you keep drinking it regularly. The grail cannot be taken past the seal as we've seen and such is the price of immortality: You are stuck inside a cave with the cup for all eternity because if you stop drinking it and leave, you will eventually age and die. Like the other two brothers did.
And you're stuck because if you are someone chasing eternal life you'd be scared out of your mind that anyone would take your place, prevent you from coming back or even being so stupid as to try and remove it from the temple in your absense.
I don't think the knight eventually minded or minded dying. He did his Duty. He guarded the grail until someone worthy came along to best and relieve him. I would guess he was tired and welcomed the end.

Good catch, V., that those slot canyons are created by running water. Nearly all of the time they are dry, but very rarely a heavy thunderstorm will send down a flash flood to carve them every so slightly deeper, over hundreds of thousands of years. There are many similarly beautiful canyons in the southwestern U.S. (California, Arizona, Utah, New Mexico) ... a shorter trip than to Jordan, but 'fraid there is nothing to match the Monuments of Petra.
