    Absolutely fantastic! David is amazing. I'm one of those that vibrato doesn't happen naturally, so hearing David's take on alternate forms of usage is great. Can't wait for the next episode! 😁

    Another great one -- that distinction between the two vibratos was interesting (pitch vs energy) !

    • @NewYorkVocalCoaching
      @NewYorkVocalCoaching  2 роки тому +2

      Yeah! Vibrato always has pitch - you'll notice that David corrects himself and says that it may indeed have pitch - but there are indeed different types of vibrato! :) -NYVC

    He was told to use straight tone for french songs but french variety has plenty of vibratos to me...? 🤔 Or less in french classical music compared and that's why he was told that. 🤔

      You have to understand that he was in a classical environment, where singing with vibrato is the standard.

    Vibrato is literally going above and below a pitch. You cannot have a vibrato without a variation in pitch. I was waiting for them to talk about what vibrato is, musically.

    • @Tieg
      @Tieg 2 роки тому +5

      There's also tremolo which is a variation in volume rather than pitch. I've noticed some singer's vibrato is actually a tremolo and wasn't sure how they did it until David showed his solar plexus technique here.

    • @NewYorkVocalCoaching
      @NewYorkVocalCoaching  2 роки тому +4

      Hi Craig! Yes! Great point. You’ll notice that David corrects himself at that moment and communicates that it was just his impression of what was occurring. -NYVC

    • @jakethewoz
      @jakethewoz 2 роки тому +2

      You're not incorrect, but I'm not sure what the point is you're trying to make. As a singer, vibrato comes from being totally relaxed and using lots of air, like David talks about at 4:43. This is something that naturally happens when people are really using their voices without adding tension or anything weird to get in their own way. When non-vocal musicians add vibrato, they have to manufacture it, and consciously think and produce a variation in volume and pitch; for most instruments, nothing like that occurs without someone making it happen (like trumpet players gently shaking the trumpet, or string players wiggling their finger). Unfortunately, a lot of singers also think vibrato is something you "do", rather than something that simply "happens". When singing, at least when using vibrato like David describes at 4:43, you don't need to think about changing pitch, rather just opening up and relaxing while using lots of air; this feels like returning to the default for a lot of singers with classical, bel canto training.
      I could be reading too much into your comment, and maybe you know all this, but in case not, I want to help people understand how vibrato works. I guess it's just my little crusade against bad, fake vibrato :)

    • @bharp4390
      @bharp4390 2 роки тому +1

      What David is really talking about is maintaining the central pitch BEHIND the vibrato, rather than letting the vibrato cover such a wide spectrum of pitch that it can throw off the overall sound. He just didn't do a very great job verbalizing this.

      Vibrato can go below or above pitch and you don’t need that much air to do vibrato
