  • Upon the jungle world of Ziaphoria, the Tyranids of Hive Fleet Tiamet have constructed a series of large, tower-like structures, which are saturated with incredible amounts of psychic energy. But just what exactly could be the purpose of these gargantuan bio-towers?

I'm suddenly picturing a scenario where Chronus launches a full scale invasion of the Eye of Terror with Tiamat following behind, setting up these bio-pylons to slowly close the eye.

Thinking of the Tyranids conquering worlds one by one to quite literally zip up the Eye of Terror excites me. It would force the Imperium to make peace with the fact that they'll never be rid of the Nids and there's nothing they can do about it. Kill them and the eye opens back up but leave them and there will forever be the looming threat of a Tyranid stronghold that stretches the entire length of the galaxy. Hive Fleets could retreat to this stretch of space using the Tiamat Tower worlds as safe havens where they can adjust their plans of attack, but at the same time they wouldn't be able to regrow their armies on these worlds without putting the towers at jeopardy since they require entire biospheres to sustain them. Any fleet bold enough to try to steal from these worlds would be met with violent retaliation from the forces of Tiamat resulting in some interesting Tyranid on Tyranid combat. Would make for some excellent lore progression of the galaxy if you ask me.

I'm adding this to my head-canon. It's the sort of thing GW would tease but fail to do; lest it draw attention away from loyalist power armour.
To keep the plot alive, 40k needs a great game in realspace. It only makes sense that a devastated Imperium would focus on rebuilding and reconquest whilst chaos withers before new hive fleets/new behaviours. Then a great waaagh would rise for a good krumpin' with the gribblies. And so on.

GW usually paints chaos as the ultimate bad guys because they have faces and personality that you can relate to but in the end the tyranids would probably emerge as the actual winners

Playing off that, that’s a very direct and easy way to transition the Tyranids into a whole different kind of problem.
Imagine: The Tyranids finally develop the ability to feed off pure warp energy and corrupted real space alike. Realizing that the warp is literally an all you can eat buffet, they decide that the best way to eat the universe is to chomp on the chaos gods ass until they get enough data to advance their species even more in the ways of warp munching.
By the time the chaos gods look up from the great game and whatever scheme Abbadon comes up, it’ll be just in time to get swarmed by warp Tyranids that literally eat the corruption out of chaos.
In a decent reality this would mean the warp is clean now, warp magic is safe now! But this is 40k.
The galaxy might want the ruinous powers back if the Tyranids shape the warp to match their own hive minded psyche.
The oceans of the warp would turn into a Kaleidoscope of fractured perspective and pure hunger.
Fuckkkkk that. That’s such an L for the galaxy, I really hope the Tyranids never figure out of how get fuel from just the warp. If they learn how to slurp soul energy like a smoothie we are all fuckef

I can see Tiamat becoming a defensive Hive Fleet, considering their diamond hard carapace. Whatever it is, the Tyranids it’s have a brilliant defensive strategy for it. Think, of all the hive fleets running around Tiamet is the lowest threat. It’s not actively running around devouring planets, so you have no reason to waste resources attacking it when other fleets are wrecking ass throughout the galaxy. And even if you attacked Tiamet, they have serious heavy infantry for defence. Whatever they’re building, we’re not gonna know until it’s ready

It might be an egg of some sort, a superweapon. Maybe even a physical avatar or manifestation of the Hivemind Itself. Or even better, the old theories from the fanbase were correct, the Tyranids were made by the Old Ones and that construct is some kind of sarcophagus. Who knows? The devastation of Baal provided a lot of insight into tyranids. Every organ of the tyranids is a symbiotic organism. The brain, muscle, exoskeleton, hell even the heart is a specialized organism woven in to a form. Could that continent spanning organism be like the brain of all the hive fleets, cordanating them all and the towers are like spinalcord in a way relaying instructions to other parts of the body? The tyranids are often thought of as one galaxy spanning lifeform.

Considering Tiamet may have been in the galaxy for 5k years by this point, that suggests they were the first hive fleet sent in this direction. What if what they're doing is converting the planet Ziaphoria into a primary hive node (for want of a better term) basically the manifestation of the Hive Mind in this galaxy and it's taken this long for it to get to the current point. With ever-increasing numbers of Tyranid hive fleets entering the galaxy, a centralised 'leadership' would make sense to coordinate them to each do the tasks they were designed to do. For sure there would be other secondary things going on in the system, maybe ship creches, Norn queen birthing pools and such, the system as a whole acting like a capital system for the Tyranids whilst they're here. Whether that's a purpose Tiamet specifically has or if it's just the first Hive fleet in a new Galaxy begins the process there, I don't know.

What of the possibility that they are new ships being grown? The smaller bioforms can be made simply enough by the Norn Queens, but the ships must need a lot more resources and a place in which to grow them. As the ships themselves are connected to the hive mind, would it also not make sense for them to be giant conduits for the shadow in the warp?

Then expand that concept with the shadow blocking off access to the rest of the warp.

While the War in Heaven was coming to a close its possible that like any normal being an Old One could have essentially 'lost the plot' and created an organism with the sole purpose of wiping everything out. The bulk of the forces were made to deal with organic foes and then some special 'blueprints' were inserted to deal with psychic opponents like the Ctan and Enslavers. 1. To act as a Relay system for ships, bio forms, and the Hive mind.
    2. Incubators, genetic testing grounds on a massive scale, and Fuel extractors.
    3. Concentration systems for Nutrients like sugar sacks for ants just much larger, a food producer by sucking the planets core slowly while mixing with nutrient fuel, and a home for specialized bio forms.
As for the planets bio sphere still being intact, well, as stated before they probably just learned to farm.

i think tiamat will become the "defender" hive fleet and try to maintain a foothold in the galaxy and we will see more of these tower either start appearing on seeded worlds and or be carried into battle. because theres one thing the chaos forces truly fear... true death. Tyranids deprive the lords of chaos of their most important asset, Followers. Tyranids cannot be corrupted turned or bargained with. With every world devoured more potential followers cease to exist. The lords of chaos know this and fear it.

We know the Tyranids can fight Chaos, like with Hive Fleet Kronus. But what we don't know is can the Hive Mind actively engage the Warp and the creatures in it like the other races can or is the Shadow in the Warp the limit of their power. The other part is the problem with the Tyranids creating their version of Agro worlds. That means two things, one that the Tyranids know about and how to operate agricultural with the task of feeding the fleet and the towers. So the that means the Tyranids don't have to cull the galaxy. Since active agricultural is way more efficient than foraging in the galaxy. But we know the Tyranids don't 'like' to do this for unknow reasons. Perhaps as some suspect its less about bio matter and more about harvesting new/fresh DNA. The other part is signs of active agricultural means the Hive Mind has made the investment of Hive fleet and its resources for what appears to be a long term project. Hinting the Hive Mind knows that consuming the Milky Way will take a long long time.

@@Symbioteposion No lore goes against it.
As for evidence, direct evidence? No, you are right, there is none.
      But indirect evidence? Plenty.
Take what's actually known about them.
Tyranids come from outside the galaxy.
Some lore suggests that the Tyranids are the ones that seeded much in not all of the life in the galaxy.
Tyranids are purely biological beings known for their bio-engineering abilities.
Tyranids are controlled by entirely warp based hive minds.
Tyranids are obsessed with collecting biomatter (far more than their fleets require) and genetic information.
Tyranids are often best thought of not as individual entities but as cells within a larger body.
Now I ask you this, if the Old Ones who left the galaxy during the War in Heaven or even long before then, the same Old Ones who were said to have seeded much if not all of the life in the galaxy and ascended to become purely warp based entities themselves, the same old ones who were the undisputed masters of biological manipulation and who created countless races simply to perform a role or a task that they required, if those Old Ones were to return to the galaxy what would it look like? To manipulate the materiel universe they'd need physical bodies of course, robust ones, ones not easily killed, weakened or subverted. Being weak to warp based attacks they'd need some kind of defence against warp predators. Why would they come back? To "fix" the galaxy, quell the realm of souls and end the Chaos Gods by wiping it clean of life, and then reseed and repopulate it again, this time keeping a more careful watch.
Tell me that a giant hive of beings all slaved to a single overriding will acting like cells of a single larger organism, an organism that is constantly reworking and adapting itself, that comes from beyond the galaxy, that consumes all life, that takes in all DNA it can and in all forms, that leaves empty dead inert worlds in its wake, that projects a shadow in the warp that is nearly impenetrable. Tell me that that doesn't sound like exactly the sort of thing the return of the old ones would look like.

My guess is that the Towers serve multiple functions. Beacons like the Pharos Beacon would be useful to have with the unprecedented Warp activity in realspace at the time. The defensive nature of Tiamat bioforms also suggests that Ziaphoria is something of a fall-back position for the Tyranids, a Fortress system so to speak, for other Tyranid forces that have been routed. The Cadia Pylons' ability to push back Warp-based activity as the Pharos Beacon did with the Ruinstorm also would help on a strategic level, keeping lines of travel clear from Warp interference. So, my speculation is that the Towers probably serve multiple functions.

Hive fleet Tiamat in 3 phases:
    Phase 1: Seize Strategic Territory:
Phase 2: Fortify it, set up communications relays and supply infrastructure.
OR it could be to clear a corridor from Warp distortions.
Phase 3: Then defend that corridor in the way only Tyranids could.
This is a truly terrifying situation. Clearly, the Nids have determined that it is better to keep certain worlds as essentially Fuel production/resupply and command hubs. I can think of only one real reason for that, why do invaders normally stockpile supplies, set up advanced communications infrastructure and fortify strategic worlds?
It's a build-up to a MASSIVE PUSH, they are doing what any army doing before a large-scale operation. If Tiamat had been ordered by the Overmind to essentially set up a forward operating base that can guide in new hive fleets or clear the path from warp storms and demons, then resupply them meaning they won't lose time-consuming contested worlds or fighting demons along the way.

My Theory - The towers are like long distance connectors for the hive mind to extend it's psychic reach and therefore enable the hive fleets to travel deeper into the universe after they've finished devouring the milky way galaxy. That's why the towers are so well guarded. They are absolutely essential to the hive mind's ability to project it's will across massive distances and there will likely be many worlds with these towers spread around the areas of the Universe they have already fed upon creating a psychic link with each other like a gigantic game of join the dots.

I could see it as something like how the nids created the first set of space-based nid ships they use. I mean the nids unless fully built by a outside force, would have had to evolve an grow on planets, and then when they got to a point they needed to escape those planets built ships to escape the worlds. As such what if they took eons to fully an completely transform the world they lived upon into the first an largest of the nid ships for the fleets, and than if you had a nid ship die an the nids on it scattered to the many planets of the system it had died in, than I could see those nids enacting a plan to make a new ship for themselves if they still had a high up nid to coordinate them. It would be interesting though if this is the nid's take on a forge world, and they are using this system as a full on forge system to build a new fleet within the galaxy.

A special issue worth considering here is Nyd Travel. Due to the nature of using gravity manipulation, it causes massive seismic events in the targete System. And I would bet the source system does not fare any better (but most reports focus on the world being stripped, not about the seismic events after Nyds left). So they inherently have issues "importing" food for the System. The stuff has to come from local sources.
On the other hand, maybe this systems is less succeptible to such issues? A rare save system where you can build a part of a "Tyranid FTL Highway"? A System that can take a lot of incomming and outgoing Nyd fleets without the planets being sterilized by permanent seismic activity?
Possible uses for the tower and the system include:
Relay: They might simply be a relays for the Hivemind. Simply and mundane.
Synapse Creatures: It could be the towers (or the whole network of towers) are simply a synapse creature that ranks above the Norn Queens. Something like a Norn King? Sector Admiral?
Blackstone Towers: Possible, but unlikely. Each fleet in itself is a moving Warp Jammer. So there is very little reason for them to exist. If it has such a effect, that is propably secondary.
Beacon/Nyd Astronomican: Between the Brood Minds and the Pharos beacon, there is plenty of evidence that they might simply be beacons for the fleets still in deep space.
Nyd Highway, step 1: If the System was save, this might be the first target in a Nyd Highway. The later fleets have a harder and harder time to find any world to feed upon. They need a low cost way to get to save worlds. And jumping from "Tower System" to "Tower System" might be the Nyd way of doing that.

A thing I noticed the other day was that you have aggressive Behemoth, ravenous hydra, sturdy Tiamat. Not perfect 1 to one comparisons.
But what if behemoth is red in correlation to khorne. Hydra and maybe Leviathan are purple blue like Slaanesh with their excessive hunger. And gorgon and Tiamat are green. Both having the toxin and resilience aspects of the plague father.
Maybe they are adapting the locals and passively tap into the warp. A low level effect compared to the ork was WAAAGH! Field. And the powers of faith by the sisters of battle.
Or more disturbingly. The hivemind isn’t as incorruptible as we thought.
Another theory I had was that ultimately the tyranids want to extinguish all other life. Making the hivemind the only entity feeding the warp thoughts, emotions and memories. Giving them full, uncontested control over the warp. And as a result of wielding such unfathomable amounts of energy and control. The tyranids could suck up stars and black holes, reverting them into less entropic states. Thus making the tyranidsnot just the gods of the immaterium, but the material world as well. No need for farms, no need for Dyson spheres or any other work intensive efforts. But for this ultimate ascension to occur they need to first rid themselves of all other competitors.

Tiamat's towers are a massive network hub that pulls in, organizes, and then redistributes all the information the various genestealer cults collect for the greater bulk of the Hive Mind to process as it emerges from hibernation as it nears the galactic edge . . . . Or its the B side of a warp gate that will lead back to the last galaxy the Tyranids consumed and their primary forces are still waiting for the vanguard to establish the beach head . . . or its the Astronomican for the genestealer fleets to utilize once they consume Big E and crash the Imperium's ability to maneuver from system to system . . . . or finally, its a warp weapon which the the Tyranids have been building to kill the Hadex Anomaly which the Imperium will realize only after they have already destroyed it and fucked themselves out of a way to close half of the Great Rift.

We know that different hive fleets act slightly different from each other and we have thanks to 40k Theories the actions of Hive Fleet Hydra acting as a built in Nid recycling system. Why can't we have a hive fleet who's purpose is to be a Nid communication system for the active Hive Fleets we know of and thise we don't. Tiamat mission could be to help coordinate the separate hive fleets so as to bring them under the direct control of something we have not seen yet and coming in reinforcements plus telling said reinforcements what to expect and where to expect it. Nids have a nasty habit of evolving to all that the galaxy has to throw at them and they don't stay beaten for long. The "Brain Hive Fleet" and reinforcements that Tiamat is about to call for might just be the end of the galaxy as you know it.

What if Vulkan led the Imperium after the War of the Beast?

The could be the organic equivalent of Blackstone constructs meant to drive back the Warp breaches into real space.

    Hive fleets. Must co-operate.
    Queens. Must co-ordinate.
Fleets without Queens go feral and do their own thing.
Queens must be kept in order.
Feral zerg must be brought into the fold.
For this purpose we need more power. And guaranteed supplies of matter to sustain this power hungry project.
And with central guidance fleets can keep threats at Bay, or attack staging areas.
The Tyranids don't have a concept of the warp. The warp was distorted across this one galaxy. Gaining control over the warp to make food more pliable would be nice. But first the hive must learn. And it must adapt. And it must grow. And the easiest way to accomplish this is to eat the squarts (completed) and grow their central core hub.
    Maybe planet sized communication arrays?
With as much power as the Light of Terra.

wait a minute.. 7 planets controlled by a Tyranid Hive, contructing towers of pure dark energy in the warp? What if this hives end goal is to transform the 7 planets into 1 large Tyranid/Hive fleet hybrid and then devouring the other Hive fleets in the galaxy to absorb all of the information necessary to ultimately destroy the galaxy..

What if they are trying to create thier own version of the webway? It could be the first "webway" gate in a new network

I cant help but see the parallel in the pilgrimages of tiamats adherents and the black ships of the imperium. Wouldnt it be easier to fuel the golden throne if the psykers came of their own free will and you could utilize far lower grade psykers so that the common citizenry would make suitable fuel? Perhaps that is their game; a far more efficient version of the Throne, to attract warp vessels and warp spawn alike, like the lure of an incomprehensibly large angler fish or the sweet scent of a pitcher plant.

living beings sacrificed to fuel mysterious installations, yeah that's quite a parallel. But maybe in this early stage Tiamat's construct is those pilgrims are sufficient because only their biomatter is needed. maybe they gonna need something stronger when these things are complete. But Tyranids already have these psykic bioforms so they can spawn them if needed. looking at the imperium, if common citizens would be suitable fuel for Big E's throne there would be no need for shipping in dangerous psykers. Common citiziens flock to Terra in their millions, dropping dead arriving at the eternity gate.

@@phreakazoith2237 we understand the so little about the golden Thorne's function, we dont know if those that die before the eternity gate AREN'T helping in powering it. We do know almost nothing, only that psykers are used to power the throne and it's dangerous to be around. What of the danger is that it sucks out anyone's soul that comes to close to power itself? All humans except for Nulls are at least latent psykers in 40k, albeit very weak ones relatively speaking. Additionally, strong belief has power independently of psychic powers in 40k, so people who believe hard enough to get to the eternity gate in spite of knowing that it's a death sentence have to be contributing to the god emporer somehow, similar to how the sisters can perform miracles if their faith is collectively strong enough. And there are thousands of them, a never ending horrific death march to the door, never wavering, never ceasing, by their tens of thousands they come all to die before Him. If singing some hymns and believing really hard has the tangible effect of diverting bullets and spawning in living saints there is absolutely no way those people make their shambolic pilgrimages isnt doing SOMETHING.
