    Logic has some midi options you might have missed that allow for controlled randomness on a variety of parameters. With the notes of your choice highlighted in the piano roll, press CMD+9 to access the midi transform window. Live 11 definitely still takes the cake in that category, but you’d be surprised how robust that feature actually is in Logic. It’s worth checking out if you haven’t used it before.

      Hey bud - thanks so much for the suggestion. I've played around with the midi transform window (I show this in some of the other videos on the boombox channel, but it definitely doesn't feel as intuitive or present as it is in Ableton. Last thing I think we we want to do when being creative is go fishing around!

    The biggest advantage Logic has was never mentioned, which is price. Logic is 200$ that’s one time charge and u get it all including updates, now just to get a similar version of Ablelton. Ur paying 500$ to also get the sound library that’s now 700$. Oh and don’t forget every year around Christmas ur gifted with the 200$ updates. So really is it worth a few quality of life fixes to spend 500$ more up front, and 200$ more each yer.

    By default this is an unfair comparison. You’re comparing $700 software to a $200 one, which comes with FREE single version updates. Bought Logic X back in 2013 and I’m still getting updates to this day. Even the ‘mid tier’ version of Ableton with its incomplete set of tools is STILL more expensive than Logic. The yearly Ableton updates costs the same cost of Logic itself. So ridiculous.

    • @kingofdjembe
      @kingofdjembe 7 місяців тому +1

      Logic is incredibly cheap. The reason for that is you have to buy Apple hardware to use it.
      Back in the days, Logic 8 and 9 were $500, which was still way cheaper that its competitors. However, apple computers are not cheap…

    • @drvoodoo3073

    • @watchboombox

      That’s a very valid point. Ableton is more expensive but you can run it on a much cheaper computer. Whereas Logic needs to be on a much more expensive Mac. As far as processing and life span go though, Mac seem to outlast PC and can be a great long term investment

    @Screaming-Trees 8 місяців тому +6

    Actually an important consideration maybe tilting in Ableton's favour is the amount of music production tutorial content there is out there for it. For electronica styles I mean. Most of them include project files and templates and sample content etc to get you started. That can be a decisive factor. You can adapt that content but it's so much easier to just follow along.

    • @NoizeLondon
      @NoizeLondon 8 місяців тому +2

      Thanks for sharing pal - that's a definitely a bonus, but I also think we shouldn't be limited by a tutorial just because it's on one DAW. The same principles can be applied to all DAW's in reality don't you think?

    • @Screaming-Trees
      @Screaming-Trees 8 місяців тому

      @@NoizeLondon Sure. I do think all of this can be adapted of course. I guess my point was more along the lines of it is easier to just follow along. Especially if you're just starting out. Rather than having to look at tutorials and have to translate to your own environment. But yeah, it can adapted to any daw.

    • @teemad
      @teemad 6 місяців тому

      I agree with you but Logic has MusicTechHelpGuy. He has the single BEST YT channel on music production in Logic by far. Even if you don't use Logic there are a lot of cool things that you can learn from his videos and use in other DAWs or even plugins.
      A lot of people who do content videos or how-to guides may be experts at what they do (although a lot of them clearly aren't), but with MusicTechHelpGuy not only do you have someone who actually knows how to teach and is a college-level educator, but also provides entire courses and FOR FREE, right here on YT.
      I spent years in both Ableton and Logic, and I have now been in just Logic for over 5 years. I have kept updating Ableton until v11 but now that Rewire is gone I will not be updating or going back to Ableton. And most of that is due to MusicTechHelpGuy.

    • @Screaming-Trees
      @Screaming-Trees 6 місяців тому

      @@teemad Fair enough. I wasn't actually talking about how-to/tutorials about the DAW itself and how to do things in it. I meant strictly production. Something like this for example: ua-cam.com/video/-12FXunzWaU/v-deo.html
      That guy doesn't teach you how to do Ableton related stuff. The focus is on how to make "that". Whatever that happens to be. So yeah you can apply that to Logic sure but there will be a little extra work required to translate that. I think that was the crux of my point. Do you want to add that bit of extra work to your day? Or would you rather just follow along in the beginning?

    i use both for a couple of years. in my opinion Logic has the best sound engine after Pro Tools, it sounds organic to my ear while Live sounds to digital. you need a lot of experience in sound selection and mixing to make your tracks sound better. also there some areas where Logic shines for example, in tracking or mixing or midi capabilities, customizing templates for better workflow like making screen-sets, customizing key-commands, also its multi-zooming functions. but for basic edm or hiphop productions and fast workflow or sound design or making pre-live-sets Ableton Live is the way to go

    I've worked in Logic Pro for around 9 years and just switched to Ableton 12. I've been using it for a few days and I feel like the sound design tools are very intuitive and easy to use. However, I haven't found a way to properly engineer my vocals and that's a big con. I still have my logic purchased looong time ago, and still, the vocal features are very easy to use (the pitch correction is genius), so I'm considering working with both for different stages. Abe12's UI is trying to be what Logic is already. For example, Abe 12's new "3D" setting already exists in Logic by default. Apple has your back when it comes to lighting and this is reflected in most Apple apps. Track stacks are more sophisticated and easier to use in Logic. Plus, you can do unlimited track stacks in Logic. I can talk about many Logic features that Abe 12 is missing which you left out of your presentation. You failed to mention that ABE 12 is crash-prone (beta software) and not as stable as Logic. There's more.

  • @olleyollet

    One of the craziest features about logic that doesn't get enough attention imo. The quick sampler: when you add a pitched percussion sample to quick sampler in the normal mode. Then you right click the waveform. Click retune. Now you have the pitch of your perc sample. for melodic percussion of any kind this is incredible. Even if you use ableton I highly recommend having a few mornings where you set 30-60 minutes aside with the coffee and slowly label your perc samples with their root pitch. for me personally it gets it right 19/20 times. As someone who owns saturn and spectra shout out to roar its incredible and takes the crown. The modulation is super easy in roar and its super easy to just turn one of the boxes with a number and just double click to reset it if you dont like your change. As someone whos had 12 beta since a few days after it was announced I'm personally sticking with logic pro which actually sucks bc i live in a city where everyone uses ableton. I will say with the changes to 12 there is only 1 thing keeping me from switching. It sounds so dumb. but when you force close a plugin with escape or closing it out you have to press the little wrench in ableton to open it back up.
    also the command in 12 for the mixer is option+command+m for the mixer if i understood your question.

    Ableton is midi mappable and does not lose it’a saved midi information.
    At Logic Pro, 14 years now midi mapping is so unstable, it’s been really a nightmare. Every now and then aux sends mapped knobs are lost , don’t work after a few days of work. It’s unbelievable. If logic were consistent in that area, logic would be the best DAW by far.
    Ableton was so great with my performance in theatre because of its consistency. But for live music I still use logic due to my Sampler (exs24) presets. It’s really a decision to move all this work to Ableton. It would take weeks but I’m thinking about it.
    Really, Apple do something with midi mapping. Everybody has issues in the forums so many years now.

    If ableton live 13 would have an option to hide the session view, so you only see the mixer (keeping the option to see the midi / clip / effect view) it would be the ultimate DAW!!!
    That would give you the option in a dual monitor setup to have an arrangement window and a mixing (and midi / fx) window.

    Ableton take a great jump with 12. But I don't like it. I don't like the look n feel. I don't like the ignorance of Ableton in some cases where users wait year by year. Apple has a natural ignorance - I guess it is part of apple philosophy (and im a Apple User btw.) Piano roll in Ableton and the midi features are awesome and useful. The similar finder is great too... Sounddesign ... both far behind Bitwig - and that's the reason why I go with Bitwig...

      Bitwig is based on a fundamental modulation base. All ican be modulate incl. 3rd Party instruments by a bunch of modulators. Not only LFO‘s. Randomizers, stepModulators, segments and you can use the output of tracks as modulation too. And Bitwig has the „Grid“. Three types of grid allows you to create sound in way to create customized synths from scratch. In the noteGrid you creates notes or infects incoming notes and the fxGrid lets you create fx in a freely way with tons of modulations and logical behaviors. You can automate modulations, you can modulate automations and of course you can modulate modulations …
      Just take a Quick Look to „Polarity“ great YT
      Have a nice day.

    Maybe it's a bug on Mac ableton but you absolutely can resize the group tab. I use it on windows which is why i think maybe it's a bug for mac.
    Also on windows it's TAB to change the screen to mixer.
    I used FL studio for a year but the automation is awful compared to ableton, It's capable on FL i just didn't like the workflow of it all.
    I think all DAW's are capable to do most things you'll need you just have to learn that particular software.

    I am a logic users for 2 years now, and a beginner producer.
    I'm thinking of switch to Live essentially because of the midi features (because I think I perform bad at my keyboard) and the samples 'find similar'.
    On logic currently, for those 2 features, I find logic to be basic but functional midi featured, and browsing from the builtin finder is a hassle : samples often miss to play when clicking twice on them, and almost all the time with a tiny little annoying lag after being selected (I have a mac mini m1 1to 16go). Also, in the builtin finder, you don't have a 'go to upper folder' but a 'back' button, which I don't dig :D.
    I have to agree also with one the viewer here : I find logic to be quite "prettier" and usable (shortcuts, overall layout) than Live. That the thing keeping me on Logic.
    For mixing, Logic is also very nice. I love the overall layout when color coding and grouping my tracks, having colored markers, and as said Fabio, you feel like a true music engineer before their good looking mixing console. And you can see the plugin on each tracks easily, manage sends quite easily, automate easily enough too.
    Thanks for the video. It enables me to think about my main instrument (the DAW) and my technical workflow.

    The browser in logic is a mess. Whenever my project gets too big it only plays the transients of the selected audio file.. so annoying. The fact that Ableton syncs the file to BPM is insane. I’d love to make the switch to Ableton (it’s much more accessible for beatmakers & editing audio is amazing) but being able to make custom shortcuts in Logic is the only feature holding me back from moving over

      there is something called LES for Ableton. It's a 3rd Party software made from Ableton users and lets you do something like that and its actually surprising that Ableton didn't implement most of these features themselves. Maybe this helps you😄✋
