Cruis'n World is the 1996 sequel to the 1994 arcade racer Cruis'n USA. Cruis'n World allows players to race on various tracks around the world. The game also features more cars than Cruis'n USA. This game introduced stunts to the Cruis'n series. They served to dodge obstacles, take close curves, and gain extra seconds of time. from: en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cruis%27n_World Tool-assisted speedrun (TAS) of Cruis'n World Arcade (1/3) El Diablo in 21:41.54 GOAL: -Complete the game as quickly as possible -Try to beat the times on Twin Galaxies at: www.twingalaxies.com/game/cruisn-world/arcade www.twingalaxies.com/game/Cruisn-world-rev-l23/mame -The first thing you learn while playing this game is that you never need to brake or release the gas pedal. All curves can be taken at full speed, but you lose speed when sliding. -I did not see any advantage in choosing the manual transmission -I did 3 TAS of this game improving my times in each one. I decided to post all three, not just the last one, because I think there's something fun to look at in all of them. -1 - El Diablo in 21:41.54 This video -2 - Humvee in 21:11.27 Coming soon -3 - Coming soon -As my main goal is to achieve the best possible time, I didn't mind not finishing first. To finish first, you have to be a little lucky. The first cars must be involved in an accident, otherwise the chances of finishing first are very slim. ===Special moves: ==Horn -While racing, press Start to honk the horn. The Humvee will fire its machine gun instead (but without causing damage to anyone). ==Wheelie -To do a Wheelie , double-tap the gas pedal. You will accelerate a little faster for a short time if you are not close to your maximum speed. I did some testing and it's useful when accelerating at the start of a stage. (I used it on the 3rd video) This gave me a few more mph (less than 10) for the same distance. -To jump over a slower moving car or one coming at you, pull a wheelie right before you hit it. If you do it right you should still be pulling a wheelie when you hit the car you are jumping over and will not crash. ==Ride on Two Wheels -Double-tap the gas (Wheelie) while turning a corner. ==Jumbo Flip (1 second bonus) -When you are going up a hill, do a wheelie at the top. The car will do a Back Flip. -And one second per backflip will be subtracted from your time at the end. ==??? see video 2 or 3 ==??? see video 2 or 3 ===Comments: -In this first TAS, I am learning the game and I hope to spot things that I will be able to improve in the next TAS. -For this first video I selected the El Diablo car because I wanted a car that sticks to the road. -I tried to do a 'Jumbo Flip' at every opportunity, on every jump, to get 1 second bonus as many times as possible. -Australia: I wasn't able to jump at all the places I should have, mainly because of the traffic. -Australia: even with 5 jumps, my time is much slower than the best time on Twin Galaxies. (1:17.45 vs 1:08.99) I'm starting to think there's something I don't know about. It is surely not the difference of 3 mph with the fastest car that explains this significant gap. -Egypt: Again, my time is much slower than Twin Galaxies. (1:34.21 vs. 1:27.60). I think there are more places I could have jumped. -Germany: I was 2 seconds slower than the time on Twin Galaxies. -Italy: Once again, I was 2 seconds slower. I'm not sure what I could improve. At least I finished first this time, thanks to the others who had an accident. -France: Again, 2 seconds slower. -Mexico: Many other jumping opportunities are available, I should have done more. ===Notable Moments: -0:10 I used the view buttons to select another car and change its color. Hold view 1 or 2 for a selection of 8 more cars. Press View 3 to change color. -0:39 Instead of colliding with another car, you can jump over it with minimal loss of speed by performing a Wheelie. This is preferable to a collision with another car. -1:50 Turn the corner on two wheels (double-tap the accelerator when turning a corner) -11:10 The game seems to have problems detecting collisions between cars on stairs. But I wouldn't recommend doing this in a real game since I tried it several times and it didn't always work. -27:01 I did a Wheelie so as not to slow down too much due to an inevitable collision ===Shortcuts: -Hawaii 0:51 -China 6:30 and 6:59 -New York 25:12 and 25:19 -I have found 2 more shortcuts not shown here, see my other videos -In conclusion I am far from beating all the times posted on Twin Galaxies. There's probably a trick I don't know about (As you'll see in video 2). -Everything I did in these TAS is achievable by a human with a little luck (or not just a little?). I didn't use any special tricks or cheats, just precision driving. Midway's always been like that. Even Gauntlet Legends would speed up the rate of life loss if you went too long without putting in a token (I never saw it; the players here never got that good). Operators gotta make a living, yannow. The problem isn't rubberbanding, it's getting to the front in the first place. Too much success and the top opponent just gets too strong. TASVideos doesn't like these type of games.
@@hawaiidkw1 its surreal that the AI dont experience speed loss _ever._ theres no rubberbanding in the cruisn franchise however they can take hills and corners at max throttle and never get slowed down by them. and that makes them difficult to contend with. once theyre able to pull away from you, theyre gone unless they crash. the only time the AI willingly slows down is when they tap their brakes in anticipation of possible evasive maneuvers. but because its only always a single tap, they will 99% of the time crash out regardless.
Glad you decided to do this. I know that racing games that have one super-powerful nemesis were never too popular (I remember both "Ironman" Ivan Stewart games spending a _lot_ of time in attract mode), but they have a place in arcade history and are worth remembering. If nothing else, they're always good for reminding us why nobody makes these kind of games anymore. (The current paradigm, of course, is "give you absolutely nothing even if you _do_ by some unfathomable miracle finish first , but nobody seems to want to talk about that.) "BALLS". Heh. "Handles like it's running on", maybe. And of course the Humvee's gun does nothing but make lots of useless noise, making it functionally identical to a normal horn. 😆

We-l-l-l, the subject of video game violence was a touchy one in the 90's (as anyone who's lived through the Mortal Kombat insanity knows), but there's always wiggle room. Note that the animals just turn into various chunks with absolutely no blood, so you could argue that this is no gorier than a meat section at a supermarket. I'm pretty sure that skewed it into the "goofy" or "cartoony" box enough for the professional busybodies to give it a pass. Of course, Midway covered themselves with a "no animals were harmed in the making of this game" disclaimer, which I found a smart move and also pretty funny. 🙂

Insane that you can have the fastest time possible, but not reach 1st.
You can just hear the twang of that rubber band. More quarters!
