I think that the most interesting part of Subaru's mental health is how he has to juggle not only his knowledge, emotions, and lost bonds with the people around him from other timelines, but the knowledge that without him they would be dead in many gruesome and horrible ways. The difference between his perspective on them and their perspective on him is so incredibly imbalanced and isolating for him that the only way he can go on is by holding onto versions of them that don't even exist anymore in the hopes that he can somehow bring about a similar relation ship to them that he has already lost, a relationship they they don't even know about. To Emilia and the others, Subaru is an enigma that has only just entered their lives, with knowledge about and emotions for them that they cannot understand the source of, and has come in clutch twice with incredibly unlikely saves (in the loot house with Elsa and with the ma-beasts at the manor/village), only to turn around and break all social decorum and insult and shame them in front of the kingdom's elites, before doubling down on his behavior and saying that they, particularly Emilia, owe him! And they are justifiably uncomfortable and distance themselves from him, for all their sakes, leaving him to struggle alone with something that, from their perspective, he is unwilling to share. From Subaru's perspective, he has gone through trauma after trauma, lost connection after connection, and is isolated and alone with nothing but his memories of their lost relationships, the horrors that took them from him, and people who he cares for but is unable to get close to. I don't need to talk about how his entitlement and disrespect for boundaries is not okay, as you've spoke on that plenty, but I must add that he is not entirely wrong in the belief that he alone can save them. As we've seen, without his presence, knowledge, and intervention, they all die. Over and over. His desire to stay close, his fear of being apart, is not just born of an unhealthy dependence on Emilia for meaning, but also on the reality that the further he is from them, the less he will know should the worst happens and he has to return by death to save them. For example, were he in the manor now, he wouldn't have to worry about the travel time needed to reach them to save them in time, on top of having to gather information on both the threats and what preexisting assets he has to protect them. Its such a messy situation, and I am very glad that you not only understand but appreciate the very real mental struggles that Subaru goes through in such a devastatingly traumatic situation. Amazing reaction as usual!
Petelgeuse is regarded quite favorably among fans; not really in a sadistic way, but largely because of the performance of the voice actor, and in a similar fashion to The Joker he works very well as a mirror to Subaru's psyche. You touched on some of these themes in your own commentary, Petelgeuse might be a horrible presence but he plays a strong part of this chapter of Subaru's story and it's really hard to fault him for that at least. Subaru isn't naturally inclined towards revenge or hatred driven motives, but as you mentioned, his feelings are more raw and immediate. I feel like he keeps being pressed into action and one of the big stressors of the story so far is his inability to prepare for what is coming his way
I love "Requiem of Silence," the song that plays over those haunting credits at the end. Also, the VA quality for this show is consistently really good, but the voicework in Episode 15 is certainly up there. Memorable stuff.
I remember when I first watched episode 15 (before it was Thanos snapped and combined with 14), I was absolutely stunned and taken aback. At first I just thought this series was okay, but that episode man... There's very few moments in media that have left me quite that stunned, and I say this wholeheartedly if I had to make a list of top 10 episodes of absolutely everything I've seen this episode would easily make the top 3. Definitely a reward I needed to keep me watching the show after last episode, when Subaru gave me middle school Vietnam flashbacks.
20:26 This is exactly why Subaru throws himself into predicaments like episode 12. He needs information and he also doesn’t know when danger will occur or when his reset point will be or if the reset point will be too late.
The fact that you instantly spotted the thematic similarities between Betelguese and Subaru and the unhealthy devotion and love they show towards unwilling idealised people is amazing, way before it's shown more explicitly through Subaru having to fight off this version of himself before he can kill the end-point manifestation of that mindset. Amazing stuff man, easily the most attentive and educated reactor I've ever seen.
The introduction of the GOAT, Petelgeuse Romanee-Conti DESU! Episode 15 is such a banger, when I first watched it while originally airing I just sat there with my jaw hanging. One of the most profoundly powerful pieces of media I've ever witnessed, top 10 easily. It's the episode that made me truly think ''Re:Zero is special'' to myself, and started my fervent love for the series.
Love the appreciation for the content of what sloth has to say, if not his presence lmao. There really is quite a lot of interesting stuff there! Also love that even as things go crazy on the small scale, interpersonal, and character levels, you're still keeping in mind the wider picture of us not knowing if there's a bigger scheme pushing Subaru along. Most reactors I've seen have completely lost track of that particular thought by this point.
I've been waiting months for this. 5:35 Ram at the produce stand is amusing in the LN. Customers almost storm the place and she sells everything except that bag of apps. 7:01 Felis/Felix/Ferris'* treatment is painful so Rem holds him in place. *All 3 names are used from time to time and it's annoying. Rem doesn't have to power of Feli? so it doesn't hurt. I guess. 18:59 "I thought this couldn't get much worse." Ah, I haven't mentioned the Rules of Re:Zero to you. First Rule: It gets worse. Second Rule: It gets *so* much worse. 28:26 "Why is his name Betelguese?" Many important characters are named after stars or constellations. Subaru (A Japanese term for the Pleiades), Al (short for Aldeberan) and quite a few others you haven't met yet.
FWIW, this author names a lot of stuff after stars. Betelgeuse is the name of a red supergiant star in the Orion constellation. Subaru is the name of a star cluster (also known as Pleiades outside of Japan). The Subaru car brand is partly named after the same cluster (hence their logo).
You should also watch memory snow ova, which takes place between arcs 2 and 3, and then frozen bonds ova before season 2. Both of these are canon and fairly good.
when you encounter something that leads you to think "what is this" it is fair to just skip that part and head straight to what is similar to this, where have i seen it before, who mentioned or eluded to this before? because almost every single time it is going to be that case.
i am glad you are still watching this in sub, i know the dub is also good but the cast and performance for the original is just too stacked to match against.
I think it’s also easy to say revenge and anger and hatred is like… bad unhealthy emotions to avoid falling into. I guess because they have also been very prevalent in more recent anime where they lead to a dark path. But I like to try and see it as more then that, with anger stemming from kindness and self love, and is a healthy reactive response to being hurt. It enables action, more then anything I think, as like a fuel. Action in itself can be healthy or unhealthy, but I wouldn’t necessarily be so quick to judge the impetus of that energy. Myself especially have a long history of weird… resentment stemming from overcoming survivors guilt and deciding to love myself, which left me with lots of undirected anger that I didn’t really know how to use. But yeah just wanted to say any emotion is valid and it’s existence itself demands a purpose, which by evolution must somehow be positive. I like to look more at all sorts of emotions and how shows use them and healthy/unhealthy ways to react n such ;o
@@keito204 My friend once said that the difference between a good and bad emotion is whether it's a wind at your back or in your face. In other words the choices it leads to and what it serves 😄
Julius saved his ass from getting executed by making him a public example but also ended looking bad for beating a kid that never held a sword

"We have a lot of work to do"
The irony considering this ends up being the loop where Subaru doesn't do anything
20:26 This is exactly why Subaru throws himself into predicaments like episode 12. He needs information and he also doesn’t know when danger will occur or when his reset point will be or if the reset point will be too late.
Exactly. Also, at that point Subaru doesbn't know if resetes are limited or if he can loop inifnietly.
"surely it couldn't get worst".....famous last words by some guy that is definitely not me

Everyone criticizes Subaru for going to help Emilia here but they never seem to realize he made the right choice
one of the constant things that happened with or without the variable called subaru is emilia helping the child of the appa merchant
She did actually help the appa guy's daughter in this timeline

Subaru (A Japanese term for the Pleiades), Al (short for Aldeberan) and quite a few others you haven't met yet.
Subaru doesn't know his check point when he dies.
8:10 good catch, the author of re zero is inspired by steins gate. the 1st opening of re zero is also an homage to the opening of steins gate.
Here we are in THE episode
Yeah betelgeuse is a direct parallel to subaru, imagine every bad thing he is exhibiting, add madness and crank it to infinity and beyond
With ‘dense love’ I believe Betelgeuse is referring to his witch smell.
