Came here just a little over a year ago (I think) for your AOT reactions, and loved your reactions for your realistic emotions/attitude/reaction to things. I think that's why you stand out, people can sense when someone is real, and when someone is bullshitting and being fake. You're a real person, with real emotions, and you're open with what you have and haven't seen, and don't just fake it for the views, that's why (I think), people respect and love your channel so much, and also why you're gaining more subscribers (rightly deserved so). Love your reactions, you're a gem among reactors and reaction channels 👌🏼 Also when people are putting you through sad and dramatic reactions like AOT, and this Re zero, Is because people see reaction channels (especially a real authentic one, like yourself) As relatable, with your emphasise, truthfulness etc, and see a relation within others who show the same sort of emotions, as they have, and see it as a relative connection. I think one thing that's heavily overlooked is that Subaru doesn't really know what is his latest checkpoint or any details about his power at all. Who's to say its gonna always work, and not just lets say 10 times and its gone? Who's to say he will go back 24 hours in time, maybe he will go back to the very beginning and lose all the connections hes made?

Rem’s death & how Betelgeuse contorted her body destroyed me. But, When Rem crawled up to Subaru & said I love you in her dying breath was the knockout punch. OMG ! Never expected the emotional intensity. Not from an Isekai.
Episode 15 is my favorite episode of Re:Zero. The OST “Requiem of Silence” that plays at the end is absolutely beautiful and synced perfectly with the visuals and the end credits. This is definitely the darkest and most disturbing episode of season 1. But what if I tell you season 2 is like this episode but the whole way through? Yeah, it’s only going to get crazier from here on.
This is exactly what I was thinking! This is by far my favorite episode as it has so many great scenes. And then comes season two which feels like this episode but prolonged over a longer period of time. Can't wait to get more of this series! :D
Episode 15 (the second half of this episode) is my favorite episode, not only of ReZero, but of all anime. From the soundtrack and lack of an opening in the original cut not giving you a moment to breathe, the the sheer emotion and talent in the voice acting for both Subaru and Betelgeuse. genuine masterpiece
Wilhem gave up on teaching Subaru how to get stronger with a Sword because Subaru wanted to result to Return by Death again. Wilhelm was introduced as very perceptive so as soon as Subaru made up his mind to use RbD again Wilhelm concluded he has no desire to become stronger, making training worthless.
1)Julius saved subaru from the knighs, they wouldnt have spared subaru coz he insulted them. So julius decided to duel subaru so that they would be satisfied with subaru getting beat up 2) we already know the sword saint, reinhard called himself as that. but obviously he isnt the same one who helped seal the witch coz that was over 400 years ago, 400 years ago is a very very important time. the dragon refers to the dragon of lugunica which roswaal stated that its his wish to kill it. the sage.... youll see. also reinhard and wilhelm (old dude aka as the sword demon.. which is just a cool title, nothing else) have the same family name... Van Astrea, you might've missed that detail. 3) Also luke, i think you should know about OD... the core of one's mana, aka their mana source . And also. that there's something called divine blessings/ divine protections in this world.. felt had it, Reinhardt as well, and many other characters as youll see in the future plus the ground dragons have the protection against wind which you saw in a comment on the previous video. 4) Remember when they fought elsa that emilia said that she has a trump card? Yea this was that.... Thats why she said she'll never use it coz puck would straight up kill everyone just like at the ending of this episode lol. 5) the first time puck blasted elsa back in episode 2... she seemed unharmed, like not even a drop of blood, and in that same instant ... her cloak vanishes in a small glitter of light, thats another detail about elsa which you kinda missed ig. 6) PAY VERY CLOSE ATTENTION to everything that will be said in the future episodes, you dont need to overthink it, coz they just give you bits of info here and there and give you the final pieces to the puzzle in later seasons.
Yeah, it doesn't get touched on more than this in the anime, so it's fair to say. Julius was ironically acting in good faith when he beat the shit out of Subaru. The entire fight was a farce that Subaru was too angry and jealous to see through.
That‘s also why Julius said Subaru would normally receive the death penalty for his insolence last episode. Also what was not shown in the anime was that Julius got punished by the captain of the knights, that‘s why Reinhard said he tarnished his career.
👀👀 Randomly a recommendation popped up about someone killing robots in the future, and there is a detective robot looking for the killer. Another anime ... I know that's random but just remembered 😂 looked cool.
i'll be honest, when i saw the notification for this video i got a huge evil smile on my face knowing you were gonna be experiencing despair. this is one of the episodes i've most looked forward to seeing you react. this episode was genuinely one of the most fucked up things i'd ever watched when i first saw it and it still is. even after rewatching the show approximately 10 times i still cry, at multiple scenes to be honest but you'll see those when they come. betelgeuse has always been this really weird character that i hated with all my being while also finding him hilarious. his voice actor is known to play a lot of high school protagonist roles, this role of his is completely different than every other role he's done and this episode alone must've gotten him so many job offers. Subaru's va i genuinely think is one of the best voice actors in the entire scene. my favorite episode in the series is reserved for season 2, but before that episode released, this was by far my favorite along with one other episode

Here we go ^^ This is THE episode for most of us where Re Zero went from a good show to a masterpiece When you reacted to the OST at the end you said that this song was a masterpiece and you cannot wait to see in which scene it was played. There you go :D Also some things for the episode: If you look closely at the creature at the end and listen carefully for the voice and what it is saying you can get to the answer of who or what this thing was. You picked that up correctly the witches cult members bowed to Subaru. This gives a very interesting new twist to him, his powers and the miasma. Rem and Betty can smell this on him and say it stinks and they call it the witches miasma. The Archbishop in this episode calls it love and asks if Subaru is Pride. This directly indicates that Sloth thinks that Subaru is one of the deadly sins of the witch cult (whatever that means). Fun fact up until now multiple characters have described subaru as prideful aswell. What is really interesting here is Betelgeuse and his title. He represents sloth but if you look at his character he values diligance A LOT which is the virtue directly opposed of sloth and he despises slothfulness. Which is really interesting and weird if he holds the title of sloth. Also dont worry you will get more answers to things about the witch and the cult in the future as you might have guessed ^^ I also like the way you think about the checkpoints of return by death. I heard people say that this makes the show boring because there are no stakes because it doesnt matter if the character dies because subaru can just start over. For me it is much more terrifying because just imagine the pain and suffering subaru goes through every single time by himself and then the mental pain of seeing your loved ones die over and over again in the most brutal way. I can fully understand why my boy subaru went insane in this episode. And as you said just remember the mental torture it would be if you know you can return to make things right but it is too late since the checkpoint is too far gone. Or worse the checkpoint is right before something horrible happened to one of your loved ones. One thing that is important to the return by death ability but not really explained in the anime. While subarus physical body goes back in time and is completely fine and he does not feel pain or anything from what happened in the "last loop" his mental state does not reset. So every single mental struggle that keeps piling up every single loop never goes away by this ability. If you think about it like this its fair to say its more a curse than a ability.

But now he was't try at all, because he was in the mindset that he can "just resolve anything" with Return By Death. 35:37- in her Subaru says this because deep down he is blaming himself for no being by their side when all this madness happe to protect them with his power to reset. 36:49- That's one of the foreshadows moments that we talked about in the OVA episode, when Subaru was about to open the door in Emilia's room. 41:41- in this case Crush and Felis are shocked because those are the exact same words said by Subaru about in Emilia in the selection reunion. So for a women to said the exact same thing about a guy that said that thing about another womem, that show how much love and respect Rem have for Subaru. 49:56- When Betelgeuse ask why Subaru is acting crazy, is because he WAS just faking insanity. He did this for two reasons. First, he really was about to lose it, and second, he thought that if look like that this time Rem would take him to the masion early and not leave him behind like she did in the previous loop. 1:00:10- Another one of the foreshadows from the OVA, when the snow statue of Subaru lose his head in the OVA. 1:02:31- Everytime Subaru loops the Witch smell grew thicker in him, as well when he try to say to someone that he can loop. Edit: I forgot to talk about 3:15. When I 1st saw that 2nd OP I knew shit was about to hit the fan s hard that was going to broke it.
When suicidal people decide to finally do it a lot of them have a last day where they markedly seem happier to people around them. It's because they've given up, so nothing really matters anymore. That's what Wilhelm saw in Subaru. Subaru had given up.

2:30 I forget if this is explained any further, but I believe basically Julius beat the crap out of Subaru because if he didn't, a bunch of the knights were going to try to rough him up or even kill him for his comments about knights from the previous episode. Julius essentially did this to save Subaru from that, despite it tarnishing his reputation. 1:01:15 also super happy you pointed out the soundtrack, this season has probably one of my all time favorite soundtracks across any form of media.
Episode 15 has to be the best episode of Re:Zero ever, if not _one of_ the best. Betelgeuse belittling Subaru’s trauma, mocking his fragility and driving him into further madness by faulting him for Rem’s death, that he was slothful despite all of his hard work and incredible emotional management which enabled him to keep moving forward-that he was ultimately a joke in comparison to those who have suffered ‘true madness’. The most debilitating part about Subaru’s curse is that he can’t share his problems with anybody throughout his loops. He can ask for help, but nobody will be able to truly understand the extent of his pain and grief. The fact that Betelgeuse was treating it as if he had merely tripped and hurt his knee, making Subaru doubt himself and question his morality-it was definitely a huge factor that led to Subaru being almost irreparably broken.

Just to add to my comment, you can tell that the VA for Subaru really tried his best to make the scene feel powerful and genuine, as if he was trying to put himself in his shoes and channel Subaru’s pain into delivering those tear-inducing “I’ll kill you!” lines, as well as that soulful scream after Betelgeuse left. The intensity, Betelguese’s jealousy and hatred towards Subaru (reference to his backstory in S2), and especially how well Subaru’s torment is portrayed… it’s so good! Again, he really gave it his all.
@@shauryasuri3653that's just what makes re:zero awesome. The fact that episodes like "parent and child" and "the taste of death" top this one, which is already extremely good, speaks volumes of tappei nagatsuki's abillity at writing emotional moments, and also white fox's extremely good adaptation.
First time I saw episode 15, I was watching it with my siblings, and we were all crying and begging "No, stop..." as everything was going down. We ended up just quiet as the credits rolled. Will never forget that experience.
The reason why he was acting so entitled at the start was because he seems to have convinced himself that he has a debt and obligation to save and protect Emilia and that by doing all of these actions in return he is owed to be allowed a place by their side. But the problem is that they do not remember a lot of the things he has sacrificed for the people in the mansion, and also in this life they did not have the interaction that started this debt. Until he realizes that he has to start again from what everyone can remember he will continue to struggle
I agree Luke Subaru really is just a well written MC. Its like I been saying since you started your journey of Re:Zero he just is someone you can relate to and is much more humanistic and realistic in that sense that you may know someone like him or relate to him in some situations he's been in. I also love Rem too she is such a sweetheart! Its so funny how only several episodes ago she was bashing Subaru with her spiked ball & chain and now she's comforting him. 💖 I do think Rem does love him more than just friends, but I also think she understands Subaru's feelings for Emilia enough that she will be fine with him being with Subaru because she just wants him to be happy.
Subaru is basically one if the best-written characters *ever.* not even just in anime, but possibly in fiction. he's rude, he's insecure, he's inept, he's a mess, (physically and emotionally.) he constantly believes that he's right despite all other evidence pointing to the contrary. we as viewers continue to watch him building castles out of cardboard as he completely disregards the storm heading ever closer. and it's horrifying. it's terrible. we scream through our screens at him to look up, look up. if only he'd see those heavy clouds! but he never hears us, and he never learns. it's excruciating, it's infuriating. at the most extreme points, we may even find ourselves hating him. but the best of us realize...Subaru isn't just a character. he's a mirror. a mirror that's reflecting back to us the worst and most ugly parts of ourselves. and THAT'S why Subaru is an amazingly written character. he's flawed. he's imperfect. he's stubborn. he's weak. he's a coward. he's annoying. *he is all of us.* and we hate it... but yet we still root for him. why? because deep down, we all want to see the worst of ourselves improve, no matter how ugly or painful it is to watch. we root for Subaru because within him we see ourselves. do you understand how amazing that is?
I've never hated Subaru, the only questionable thing he's ever done until this point is picking up a fight with that knight guy knowing that he won't win. As for everything else he has the right to be cringe. He IS right, he DID save her, she IS in his debt and he could as well take a dump in front of everyone in that court and it still should be respected by her BECAUSE HE FRICKING SAVED HER LIFE.
I absolutely love it because he's so human. A lot of shows have a main character who is just undeniably good and flawless. Subaru is a bad person... but he doesnt *want* to be a bad person. That's INSANELY good writing. I see people say like, "I dont like Subaru because his choices are bad". And the thing is that's 100% intentional. It's not like he's *accidentally* a bad person that would just be bad writing. Even the other characters in the show comment on how dumb he's being. But every shitty step he takes forwards he becomes a stronger and better person. He deserves to be called a good person IMO more than most main characters because he wasnt born good, all knowing, strong, etc. He worked for it.
Yes! For sure. He manages to land roles where the characters are hype af like betelgeuse. He also portrayed Matsouke in Bluelock, another character that was hype af.
That song in the closing credits is SO powerful. What an amazing musical piece to pair with such an emotional and heartbreaking sequence. As horrible as it is, this episode evokes so much emotion, and I love it. It's not what happens in the episode specifically, but the way it can make you feel is what is so powerful. I am very impressed that you recalled snow Subaru's head falling of from the Memory Snow OVA. Many of your predictions have been spot on. You really pay attention to the smaller things that most people wouldnt think to think of. It's not the word special that got a strong reaction, it's how strongly and sincerely Rem said it, despite being such an abstract word. Being special doesn't really mean anything, it can be referring to all kinds of things. And yet after taking the time to think on how she felt, she said it in such a determined way, as if it meant everything. That's what stunned them, it makes it glaringly clear that there is very deep emotion behind it, and yet something that is impossible to explain in words.
That creature at the end is Puck. Remember how he 'joked' about destroying the world should something happen to Emelia, yeah, wasn't a joke. The fun, happiness only gets better from here.

Glad you already realize how amazingly written subaru is as a character you can argue about his decision making but he’s acting like a real person would the things he went through and the trauma despite him eventually pulling through won’t just disappear and just like everyone he has an ugly side. Also won’t say who the creature is since the anime will reveal it in due time (everyone please be nice and don’t spoil things that the anime is Gina explain later on anyways) This episode and ending credit scene made Re:Zero jump up Form a good anime to a masterpiece to me. The directing, voice acting, ost and unsettling animation of Betelgeuse was just something on a whole other level

I think it was the year season 2 came out but Subaru's voice actor won a best VA award for his work in the series. Very, very well deserved. Probably my favorite performance from any piece of media

When you did your Requim of Silence reaction you said you were jealous of us knowing what was happening ... how do you feel now? This episode imo is the peek of an anime episode - the way the soundtrack, pictures and emotions come together is just overwhelming.

There's a reason why Shakespeare's tragedies are usually considered masterpieces by literature scholars. THIS. This episode perfectly shows why. Episode 15 of Re:Zero is by far the most effective and masterful work of tragedy I've ever seen in fictional media to this day. Absolutely bone-chilling and incredible imo.
Oh yes... the twister episode. It still hits hard on a rewatch. Rem is great in this episode. The voice actors do an amazing work too. And that credits roll scene with the snow piling up on Subaru's body... chef's kiss.

Yes, this episode! I've been waiting for this reaction video lol. When people say Re:Zero has a lot of suffering, this is probably one of the things that'd come to mind. I love seeing people's reaction to this one. There are amazing episodes after this one but this is one of the most shocking ones this season.

4:50 very well said! You would be surprised how many people watching this show call out Subaru, calling him pathethic and saying stuff like "they would never act like Subaru" ;) Well, what do you know.
Because they're not wrong. Most of them wouldn't act like Subaru, at least not to the same degree. Subaru's characteristics definitely exist in a lot of viewers but most viewers don't manifest his good or bad qualities to the same degree he does. So its absolutely reasonable for most people to denounce Subaru for his flaws because they see themselves as better than him. And its reasonable for most people to belittle his strengths, because his strengths are so unbelievably unrealistic. Many people in his shoes would have long since given up maybe even after the first instance of Return by Death. And to bring it back to what Luke said at the timestamp you mentioned: Nah, he's mostly right there but it IS a human thing to be able to forgive, forget and move on. It's just not a common human trait unfortunately.
@@Jaxter0987 I guess what he's trying to say is how some people tend to overestimate themselves and belittle Subaru for his actions. Of course as a viewer watching the whole picture from the outside you can see all the logical and best actions to take, but I doubt many would be able to do that if they were in Subaru's shoe. Saying stuff like "just kill yourself and fix the day" I know I wouldnt be able to kill myself over an argument or some bad decisions especially when I'm not sure if it'll even work. Subaru is a good written character because he is so human, he has his good and bad side he has big flaws and sometimes contradicts himself and everything does effect him which makes him realistic.
This was one of the best episodes I've ever seen, I remember crying watching this, and I still do. It is indeed brutal, great reaction! I really enjoyed it, such an awesome show!!
Thanks for the honest reactions. This series is tough. It pulls you into sadness, confusion, and anger, but there is also some great development, some awe inspiring victories, and euphoric highs. There is so much to experience and learn.
If you think back the show briefly discussed multiple witches but the worst being The Witch of Envy which brought calamity to the world. From there we can reasonably assume the other witches are named after the other sins.
The "dont you touch him!" always makes me emotional, it shows how much she loves him , she doesnt want someone like that touch subaru, who is her reason to die, that moment also makes me tear up when she shouts that, (Minor spoiler for non webnovel readers) - also how she shouts the exact words "dont you touch him!" in act 7 in last moments in fight VS soldier , even though Rem is in a state she is in yet still shouts the same words, THE BEST Subarus Voice actor also won an award for voice acting, Subaru is the best voice acted character I heard so far, its just mostly screaming in pain, yeah, but imagine how many times he had to shout like that to capture the pain.. uff And yeah, Satella, "the witch of envy", who consumed(means killed) other 6 witches of sin(sloth,greed,pride,etc...) (it was in a book subaru was reading in earlier episodes) is very, very powerful, she was indeed sealed by a master swordsman, a sage and a dragon, everyone in the world knows that,well, since, she DESTROYED half of the world and they still werent able to kill her, only to seal her in a place... Master swordsman is the first swordsman from Van Astrea family, where Reinhard(current master swordsman) is from and Wilhelm, Sage - people just know he/she exists/existed, and the dragon mentioned is the dragon Lugunica, the one thanks to which the current country lugunica exists

To explain the thing Wilhelm was saying about not teaching Subaru the sword: Basically the decision Subaru had made at that point, "If i just get the chance i can make any problem go away" was basically that he can just throw his life at any problem without needing to ever actually develop as a person, thus abandoning the idea of ever gettting stronger. Wilhelm realizes that Subaru is no longer actually trying to improve, he's just going through the motions because he doesnt believe he actually needs to change. If Subaru doesnt even want to get stronger, then its a waste of time to teach him

When I saw that ending (for episode 15) for the first time, seeing those credits roll with an amazing OST playing and snow falling, my impression was basically "Oh wow, this felt more like an ending to a movie trilogy", or something like that. I'd say my top 3 favorite episodes from the first season of Re:Zero are 11, 15 and 18 (not necessarily in that order). Those three episodes just stood out to me that much, not that any of the later episodes in this season are bad or anything because I think many of them are excellent episodes. But it would be hard to deny how amazing (and brutal in many ways) episode 15 is. What I personally like the most about episode 14 is probably Rem's letter to Subaru. It just hits so much harder when you see what happened to Rem. Also, in the cave Rem crawling towards Subaru, freeing him, telling him to live and saying she loves him is just a beautiful but sad scene. Just think about it, after these events when Subaru returns by death at the end of the episode Rem never wrote that letter to Subaru or told him she loves him, and only Subaru remembers those events happened although that doesn't change how Rem feels about Subaru at the start of Subaru's new cycle.
He he, i was waiting for this jaw drop reaction in the end of ep. 15.. One of the best and craziest episodes in anime history for me, and i have seen a lot. Glad you liked it.

I think one thing that's heavily overlooked is that Subaru doesn't really know what is his latest checkpoint or any details about his power at all. Who's to say its gonna always work, and not just lets say 10 times and its gone? Who's to say he will go back 24 hours in time, maybe he will go back to the very beginning and lose all the connections hes made?
Or maybe he will go back to point, where somebody/everyone already died....
that really is the annoying thing about return by death, it dosent come with an instruction manual so subaru always has to learn the hard way.

It's just so awesome. Even the subtle change in the still image we see while it rolls, how the snow covers everything and the storm picks up. The build up, the song, the everything. Really show how motivated everyone working on this series was

Episode 15 is my favorite episode of Re:Zero. The OST “Requiem of Silence” that plays at the end is absolutely beautiful and synced perfectly with the visuals and the end credits. This is definitely the darkest and most disturbing episode of season 1. But what if I tell you season 2 is like this episode but the whole way through? Yeah, it’s only going to get crazier from here on.
This is exactly what I was thinking! This is by far my favorite episode as it has so many great scenes. And then comes season two which feels like this episode but prolonged over a longer period of time. Can't wait to get more of this series! :D

Episode 15 (the second half of this episode) is my favorite episode, not only of ReZero, but of all anime. From the soundtrack and lack of an opening in the original cut not giving you a moment to breathe, the the sheer emotion and talent in the voice acting for both Subaru and Betelgeuse. genuine masterpiece

Wilhem gave up on teaching Subaru how to get stronger with a Sword because Subaru wanted to result to Return by Death again.
Wilhelm was introduced as very perceptive so as soon as Subaru made up his mind to use RbD again Wilhelm concluded he has no desire to become stronger, making training worthless.

1)Julius saved subaru from the knighs, they wouldnt have spared subaru coz he insulted them. So julius decided to duel subaru so that they would be satisfied with subaru getting beat up
2) we already know the sword saint, reinhard called himself as that. but obviously he isnt the same one who helped seal the witch coz that was over 400 years ago, 400 years ago is a very very important time. the dragon refers to the dragon of lugunica which roswaal stated that its his wish to kill it. the sage.... youll see. also reinhard and wilhelm (old dude aka as the sword demon.. which is just a cool title, nothing else) have the same family name... Van Astrea, you might've missed that detail.
3) Also luke, i think you should know about OD... the core of one's mana, aka their mana source . And also. that there's something called divine blessings/ divine protections in this world.. felt had it, Reinhardt as well, and many other characters as youll see in the future plus the ground dragons have the protection against wind which you saw in a comment on the previous video.
4) Remember when they fought elsa that emilia said that she has a trump card? Yea this was that.... Thats why she said she'll never use it coz puck would straight up kill everyone just like at the ending of this episode lol.
5) the first time puck blasted elsa back in episode 2... she seemed unharmed, like not even a drop of blood, and in that same instant ... her cloak vanishes in a small glitter of light, thats another detail about elsa which you kinda missed ig.
6) PAY VERY CLOSE ATTENTION to everything that will be said in the future episodes, you dont need to overthink it, coz they just give you bits of info here and there and give you the final pieces to the puzzle in later seasons.
Yeah, it doesn't get touched on more than this in the anime, so it's fair to say. Julius was ironically acting in good faith when he beat the shit out of Subaru. The entire fight was a farce that Subaru was too angry and jealous to see through.
That‘s also why Julius said Subaru would normally receive the death penalty for his insolence last episode. Also what was not shown in the anime was that Julius got punished by the captain of the knights, that‘s why Reinhard said he tarnished his career.
Explaining this is understandable, because it was very subtle in the anime and was not touched upon in the future.

i'll be honest, when i saw the notification for this video i got a huge evil smile on my face knowing you were gonna be experiencing despair. this is one of the episodes i've most looked forward to seeing you react. this episode was genuinely one of the most fucked up things i'd ever watched when i first saw it and it still is. even after rewatching the show approximately 10 times i still cry, at multiple scenes to be honest but you'll see those when they come.
betelgeuse has always been this really weird character that i hated with all my being while also finding him hilarious. his voice actor is known to play a lot of high school protagonist roles, this role of his is completely different than every other role he's done and this episode alone must've gotten him so many job offers. Subaru's va i genuinely think is one of the best voice actors in the entire scene.
my favorite episode in the series is reserved for season 2, but before that episode released, this was by far my favorite along with one other episode

When you reacted to the OST at the end you said that this song was a masterpiece and you cannot wait to see in which scene it was played. There you go :D
Also some things for the episode:
If you look closely at the creature at the end and listen carefully for the voice and what it is saying you can get to the answer of who or what this thing was.
You picked that up correctly the witches cult members bowed to Subaru. This gives a very interesting new twist to him, his powers and the miasma.
Rem and Betty can smell this on him and say it stinks and they call it the witches miasma. The Archbishop in this episode calls it love and asks if Subaru is Pride. This directly indicates that Sloth thinks that Subaru is one of the deadly sins of the witch cult (whatever that means). Fun fact up until now multiple characters have described subaru as prideful aswell.
What is really interesting here is Betelgeuse and his title. He represents sloth but if you look at his character he values diligance A LOT which is the virtue directly opposed of sloth and he despises slothfulness. Which is really interesting and weird if he holds the title of sloth.
Also dont worry you will get more answers to things about the witch and the cult in the future as you might have guessed ^^
I also like the way you think about the checkpoints of return by death. I heard people say that this makes the show boring because there are no stakes because it doesnt matter if the character dies because subaru can just start over.
For me it is much more terrifying because just imagine the pain and suffering subaru goes through every single time by himself and then the mental pain of seeing your loved ones die over and over again in the most brutal way. I can fully understand why my boy subaru went insane in this episode.
And as you said just remember the mental torture it would be if you know you can return to make things right but it is too late since the checkpoint is too far gone. Or worse the checkpoint is right before something horrible happened to one of your loved ones.
One thing that is important to the return by death ability but not really explained in the anime.
While subarus physical body goes back in time and is completely fine and he does not feel pain or anything from what happened in the "last loop" his mental state does not reset. So every single mental struggle that keeps piling up every single loop never goes away by this ability.
If you think about it like this its fair to say its more a curse than a ability.

16:00 - and Wilhelm notice in the follow day too, because before Subaru was realy try do to his shame of the duel. But now he was't try at all, because he was in the mindset that he can "just resolve anything" with Return By Death.
35:37- in her Subaru says this because deep down he is blaming himself for no being by their side when all this madness happe to protect them with his power to reset.
36:49- That's one of the foreshadows moments that we talked about in the OVA episode, when Subaru was about to open the door in Emilia's room.
41:41- in this case Crush and Felis are shocked because those are the exact same words said by Subaru about in Emilia in the selection reunion. So for a women to said the exact same thing about a guy that said that thing about another womem, that show how much love and respect Rem have for Subaru.
49:56- When Betelgeuse ask why Subaru is acting crazy, is because he WAS just faking insanity. He did this for two reasons. First, he really was about to lose it, and second, he thought that if look like that this time Rem would take him to the masion early and not leave him behind like she did in the previous loop.
1:00:10- Another one of the foreshadows from the OVA, when the snow statue of Subaru lose his head in the OVA.
1:02:31- Everytime Subaru loops the Witch smell grew thicker in him, as well when he try to say to someone that he can loop.
Edit: I forgot to talk about 3:15. When I 1st saw that 2nd OP I knew shit was about to hit the fan s hard that was going to broke it.
Wilhelm saw "the thing that only he can do" which means he doesn't want or need to get stronger because he can "solve" it different way
When suicidal people decide to finally do it a lot of them have a last day where they markedly seem happier to people around them. It's because they've given up, so nothing really matters anymore. That's what Wilhelm saw in Subaru. Subaru had given up.

2:30 I forget if this is explained any further, but I believe basically Julius beat the crap out of Subaru because if he didn't, a bunch of the knights were going to try to rough him up or even kill him for his comments about knights from the previous episode. Julius essentially did this to save Subaru from that, despite it tarnishing his reputation.
1:01:15 also super happy you pointed out the soundtrack, this season has probably one of my all time favorite soundtracks across any form of media.
Episode 15 has to be the best episode of Re:Zero ever, if not _one of_ the best. Betelgeuse belittling Subaru’s trauma, mocking his fragility and driving him into further madness by faulting him for Rem’s death, that he was slothful despite all of his hard work and incredible emotional management which enabled him to keep moving forward-that he was ultimately a joke in comparison to those who have suffered ‘true madness’.
The most debilitating part about Subaru’s curse is that he can’t share his problems with anybody throughout his loops. He can ask for help, but nobody will be able to truly understand the extent of his pain and grief. The fact that Betelgeuse was treating it as if he had merely tripped and hurt his knee, making Subaru doubt himself and question his morality-it was definitely a huge factor that led to Subaru being almost irreparably broken.
funny enough i dont think this is even the best episode of re zero. I like a few s2 episodes better than this. and this is a phenominal episode.

Just to add to my comment, you can tell that the VA for Subaru really tried his best to make the scene feel powerful and genuine, as if he was trying to put himself in his shoes and channel Subaru’s pain into delivering those tear-inducing “I’ll kill you!” lines, as well as that soulful scream after Betelgeuse left.
The intensity, Betelguese’s jealousy and hatred towards Subaru (reference to his backstory in S2), and especially how well Subaru’s torment is portrayed… it’s so good!
Again, he really gave it his all.

You can practically see it killing him inside...and yet he craves more. That's what anime like these do to you man.
First time I saw episode 15, I was watching it with my siblings, and we were all crying and begging "No, stop..." as everything was going down. We ended up just quiet as the credits rolled. Will never forget that experience.
The reason why he was acting so entitled at the start was because he seems to have convinced himself that he has a debt and obligation to save and protect Emilia and that by doing all of these actions in return he is owed to be allowed a place by their side. But the problem is that they do not remember a lot of the things he has sacrificed for the people in the mansion, and also in this life they did not have the interaction that started this debt. Until he realizes that he has to start again from what everyone can remember he will continue to struggle
I agree Luke Subaru really is just a well written MC. Its like I been saying since you started your journey of Re:Zero he just is someone you can relate to and is much more humanistic and realistic in that sense that you may know someone like him or relate to him in some situations he's been in. I also love Rem too she is such a sweetheart! Its so funny how only several episodes ago she was bashing Subaru with her spiked ball & chain and now she's comforting him. 💖 I do think Rem does love him more than just friends, but I also think she understands Subaru's feelings for Emilia enough that she will be fine with him being with Subaru because she just wants him to be happy.
Subaru is basically one if the best-written characters *ever.* not even just in anime, but possibly in fiction. he's rude, he's insecure, he's inept, he's a mess, (physically and emotionally.) he constantly believes that he's right despite all other evidence pointing to the contrary. we as viewers continue to watch him building castles out of cardboard as he completely disregards the storm heading ever closer. and it's horrifying. it's terrible. we scream through our screens at him to look up, look up. if only he'd see those heavy clouds! but he never hears us, and he never learns. it's excruciating, it's infuriating. at the most extreme points, we may even find ourselves hating him.
but the best of us realize...Subaru isn't just a character. he's a mirror. a mirror that's reflecting back to us the worst and most ugly parts of ourselves. and THAT'S why Subaru is an amazingly written character. he's flawed. he's imperfect. he's stubborn. he's weak. he's a coward. he's annoying. *he is all of us.*
and we hate it... but yet we still root for him. why? because deep down, we all want to see the worst of ourselves improve, no matter how ugly or painful it is to watch. we root for Subaru because within him we see ourselves.

I've never hated Subaru, the only questionable thing he's ever done until this point is picking up a fight with that knight guy knowing that he won't win. As for everything else he has the right to be cringe. He IS right, he DID save her, she IS in his debt and he could as well take a dump in front of everyone in that court and it still should be respected by her BECAUSE HE FRICKING SAVED HER LIFE.

I absolutely love it because he's so human. A lot of shows have a main character who is just undeniably good and flawless. Subaru is a bad person... but he doesnt *want* to be a bad person. That's INSANELY good writing. I see people say like, "I dont like Subaru because his choices are bad". And the thing is that's 100% intentional. It's not like he's *accidentally* a bad person that would just be bad writing. Even the other characters in the show comment on how dumb he's being. But every shitty step he takes forwards he becomes a stronger and better person. He deserves to be called a good person IMO more than most main characters because he wasnt born good, all knowing, strong, etc. He worked for it.
Requiem Of Silence will always hit hard in this one 😭

Yes! For sure. He manages to land roles where the characters are hype af like betelgeuse. He also portrayed Matsouke in Bluelock, another character that was hype af.
That song in the closing credits is SO powerful. What an amazing musical piece to pair with such an emotional and heartbreaking sequence. As horrible as it is, this episode evokes so much emotion, and I love it. It's not what happens in the episode specifically, but the way it can make you feel is what is so powerful. ReZero is one of the few HANDFUL animes I know so far that adapted a light novel to PERFECTION! and this episode proves this statement.

It's not the word special that got a strong reaction, it's how strongly and sincerely Rem said it, despite being such an abstract word.
Being special doesn't really mean anything, it can be referring to all kinds of things. And yet after taking the time to think on how she felt, she said it in such a determined way, as if it meant everything. That's what stunned them, it makes it glaringly clear that there is very deep emotion behind it, and yet something that is impossible to explain in words.
That creature at the end is Puck. Remember how he 'joked' about destroying the world should something happen to Emelia, yeah, wasn't a joke.
The fun, happiness only gets better from here.

Glad you already realize how amazingly written subaru is as a character you can argue about his decision making but he’s acting like a real person would the things he went through and the trauma despite him eventually pulling through won’t just disappear and just like everyone he has an ugly side. I also hate when people say he should just restart which means he’d had to kill himself while he doesn’t even know how many resets he has and how the checkpoints are set
I think it was revealed in a side story that Rem being Rem made several of the same tracksuits for Subaru in the 2 month break between the mabeast incident and the return to the capital ☠️

Foreshadowing I’ll point out more of it when we get to the episodes. There’s another nod to Subaru touching the door knob of Emilia’s room and it being freezing cold this time it was so cold his finger froze to it and stuck to it. Also won’t say who the creature is since the anime will reveal it in due time (everyone please be nice and don’t spoil things that the anime is Gina explain later on anyways)
This episode and ending credit scene made Re:Zero jump up Form a good anime to a masterpiece to me. The directing, voice acting, ost and unsettling animation of Betelgeuse was just something on a whole other level

There's a reason why Shakespeare's tragedies are usually considered masterpieces by literature scholars. THIS. This episode perfectly shows why. Episode 15 of Re:Zero is by far the most effective and masterful work of tragedy I've ever seen in fictional media to this day. Absolutely bone-chilling and incredible imo.

It still hits hard on a rewatch. Rem is great in this episode. The voice actors do an amazing work too. And that credits roll scene with the snow piling up on Subaru's body... chef's kiss.
“I don’t think this guy knows what sloth means.” I think he has a pretty firm grasp of sloth. To not act, wasted potential, to be able to do something but chose not to. Often compared to laziness.

Yes, this episode! I've been waiting for this reaction video lol. When people say Re:Zero has a lot of suffering, this is probably one of the things that'd come to mind. I love seeing people's reaction to this one. There are amazing episodes after this one but this is one of the most shocking ones this season.

Because they're not wrong. Most of them wouldn't act like Subaru, at least not to the same degree. Subaru's characteristics definitely exist in a lot of viewers but most viewers don't manifest his good or bad qualities to the same degree he does. So its absolutely reasonable for most people to denounce Subaru for his flaws because they see themselves as better than him. And its reasonable for most people to belittle his strengths, because his strengths are so unbelievably unrealistic. Many people in his shoes would have long since given up maybe even after the first instance of Return by Death.
And to bring it back to what Luke said at the timestamp you mentioned: Nah, he's mostly right there but it IS a human thing to be able to forgive, forget and move on. It's just not a common human trait unfortunately.
@@Jaxter0987 I guess what he's trying to say is how some people tend to overestimate themselves and belittle Subaru for his actions. Of course as a viewer watching the whole picture from the outside you can see all the logical and best actions to take, but I doubt many would be able to do that if they were in Subaru's shoe. Saying stuff like "just kill yourself and fix the day" I know I wouldnt be able to kill myself over an argument or some bad decisions especially when I'm not sure if it'll even work. Subaru is a good written character because he is so human, he has his good and bad side he has big flaws and sometimes contradicts himself and everything does effect him which makes him realistic.

If you think back the show briefly discussed multiple witches but the worst being The Witch of Envy which brought calamity to the world. From there we can reasonably assume the other witches are named after the other sins.
I really love the voice acting along with the music in this episode, also knowing others like it too just adds to it

Subarus Voice actor also won an award for voice acting, Subaru is the best voice acted character I heard so far, its just mostly screaming in pain, yeah, but imagine how many times he had to shout like that to capture the pain.. uff
And yeah, Satella, "the witch of envy", who consumed(means killed) other 6 witches of sin(sloth,greed,pride,etc...) (it was in a book subaru was reading in earlier episodes) is very, very powerful, she was indeed sealed by a master swordsman, a sage and a dragon, everyone in the world knows that,well, since, she DESTROYED half of the world and they still werent able to kill her, only to seal her in a place... Master swordsman is the first swordsman from Van Astrea family, where Reinhard(current master swordsman) is from and Wilhelm, Sage - people just know he/she exists/existed, and the dragon mentioned is the dragon Lugunica, the one thanks to which the current country lugunica exists

The directors cut ruins one of the most memorable scenes of the season IMO by replacing the ending song with less impactful OST. The scene is MASSIVELY downgraded without it, I really dont want you to miss out on how good the scene original was

To explain the thing Wilhelm was saying about not teaching Subaru the sword:
Basically the decision Subaru had made at that point, "If i just get the chance i can make any problem go away" was basically that he can just throw his life at any problem without needing to ever actually develop as a person, thus abandoning the idea of ever gettting stronger.
Wilhelm realizes that Subaru is no longer actually trying to improve, he's just going through the motions because he doesnt believe he actually needs to change. If Subaru doesnt even want to get stronger, then its a waste of time to teach him

When I saw that ending (for episode 15) for the first time, seeing those credits roll with an amazing OST playing and snow falling, my impression was basically "Oh wow, this felt more like an ending to a movie trilogy", or something like that. I'd say my top 3 favorite episodes from the first season of Re:Zero are 11, 15 and 18 (not necessarily in that order). Those three episodes just stood out to me that much, not that any of the later episodes in this season are bad or anything because I think many of them are excellent episodes. But it would be hard to deny how amazing (and brutal in many ways) episode 15 is. What I personally like the most about episode 14 is probably Rem's letter to Subaru. It just hits so much harder when you see what happened to Rem. Also, in the cave Rem crawling towards Subaru, freeing him, telling him to live and saying she loves him is just a beautiful but sad scene. Just think about it, after these events when Subaru returns by death at the end of the episode Rem never wrote that letter to Subaru or told him she loves him, and only Subaru remembers those events happened although that doesn't change how Rem feels about Subaru at the start of Subaru's new cycle.
