- I was a radio and tv broadcaster for Armed Forces Radio and TV in Madrid, Spain. This was my first interview... and a great lesson in what NOT to do when interviewing a leading rock band! Great fun!!
Alex has me rolling in laughter. He was just so blunt. 😂
Along with Michael and the endless Jack Daniels jokes.
It's the president of the math club interviewing the band
Chess Club and D&D
Lol...
I'm 56 and remember buying the first album at 15. I want my money back . . I'm kidding. Thanks for all the great music and good times!
Rock on!
I concur!
Thank you so much for releasing! Pre-'82 video interviews are sooooo fuckin' rare in the VH bootleg world. Thanks again man!
Wow, this is very cool! MIss those days with Mikey. Thanks for posting!!
The Van Halen members are very down to earth, that's why they're so well liked.
only michael Anthony is

This was awesome and a blast to watch, thanks for sharing it.✌🏻
Glad you enjoyed it! There were some other parts that never made UA-cam.
VH could have taught an improv comedy master class.
Thanks for posting this!!! Great off the cuff interview! As a military member I think it’s great that this was AFN!!!
Thanks. It was a blast doing it, and more so for the USAF :-)
..thanks man, this makes my day. just turned 50...i saw almost all of the shows with Roth except diver down (us festival) couple buddies started trouble and we ended up in lockup for a couple days. made up for it in Houston when i saw the jump concert twice (they sold out 3 shows in about an hour apiece. these guys were fuckin monsters! good times. once again, thanks seth.
Very cool vintage interview! Thanks for uploading!
Cuts out before the best question though!
+NostalgiaVHS I'm planning on adding that later 😀
Let me introduce to you Mr Michael Anthony and Mr Jack Daniels.
LOL! They were inseparable that night
and the cradle started rockin
Alex is possibly more intimidating than James Hetfield. And nearly as much as Tony Iommi.
Eddie van halen won best guitarist 4 years in a row and still going.
5:01 his laugh gives me life 😭♥✨
SAME
This is awesome lol
Cool. Never saw that before. Interesting Big Al listed Little Richard as influence. Who knew?
little dick inspired alot of rockers including the Beatles
Right Alex, variety IS the spice of life!!!
Wow AFN interviewing Van Halen................crazy!
They were a band of all stars. As the years pass i pay way more attention to Alex and Mikes phenomenal musicianship in VH. What a great producer on those early albums also. The perfect sound. Wish it would of lasted into the 90’s with Dave.
Mike was treated like shyte
I am guessing that it gets really old getting asked the same questions over and over and over again, day after day after day...and yet it would also be tough being the one interviewing people that get tired of being interviewed.
Could you imagine if Michael did that" room service accent" of an immigrant stereotype, there would be riots in the streets. Which is why a sense of humour in the 80s is considered systemic racism in 2020, because people take themselves way too seriously. I'm glad I grew up in that generation. Remember they are half Asian, their mother was Indonesian. I miss lightheartedness. These guys are so humble.
Michael Anthony reminds me a lot of my brother. how interesting....
Alex actually resembles Eddie in this...I always thought that they had different paternal units
Units?? 🙄
The Boys got Seth HAMMERD
Hard to believe but not at this point in the interview. Dinner and drinks followed. ;-)
Lol, that's SO Cool Seth.... I guess you were just tired, but ya gotta admit your looking very close to slightly toasted, lol... God Bless you man !
Holy cow dude I admire you for having the guts to put this online but if I didn't know better I'd swear this was a parody about the "worst camera crew on the planet". From that voice..to getting their names wrong to the camera guy just turning the camera off Michael Anthony while he's talking multiple times.. lol and I'm only 3 mins in! I'm not sure I can handle another 18 mins of this.
Wow 14:20. Cant believe it came out lol. LMAO 😂.
I had the original converted to an MP4. Who would have thought it would get over 50,000 views! LOL! Still one of the best moments I can remember
You can sort of see this was the beginning of the end here
Alex's Robbie Robbertson phase.
yep
♥️♥️♥️♥️
So high! Hahhaahahahahaaa
Seth - how were you able to arrange an interview with Van Halen? Was it normal for AFN to be able to get those kinds of interviews? Did any of this ever make it on air?
Thanks for the questions. I was stationed in Madrid at Torrejon Air Base from 1981-1983 working for the Armed Forces Radio and Television Service. At the time I was 20 and heard Van Halen was coming to town. My rationale was simple... I spoke English, they spoke English, and their management was willing to set up the interview. It was my first interview as you can tell from my handling of the questions. Alex enjoyed driving the interview and Michael was a lot of fun as well. Following this I interviewed Joey and Dee Dee Ramone when they came into Madrid for a concert.
And yes, an edited version was aired 😀
please post ALL of this. Its
cut off the end. Thanks
Hi Matt. Still looking for the master on this. As soon as I have it, I'll upload the end.
thanks!
1:09 yes 👌😫
Yo Seth. What's up? I worked with you at Astro in East Windsor.
wow! that's a while back
I guarantee you, this is what should have aired over whatever saccharin thing they did air, MTV would have,
The Essential Van Halen Goofiness!
Wait a minute i got some browns m&m's for you guys
Too funny! What a bunch of shits they were for doing that. They must have thought, & just roared with laughter, "I can't believe someone will actually do this!"
“That’s my rum and coke” “ hey asshole”😂
Is that Jack Daniels? and give me that Run and coke....
This interview was weeks before Van Halen had Mikey sign a contract excluding him from royalties on songs written on prior albums AND the 1984 album AFTER it was released and on tour for. He was given a set fee and a few dollars for t-shirt and program sales. His contract was rewritten on the road. They BENT HIM OVER, SMH
@James H Agree 100% - He's doing "Just Fine!" Odds are, he would NEVER have had his current life without Ed & Al, end of story.
@James H I don't know what made them change their mind about that...but at the end of the day, from a creative input perspective, Ed was certainly entitled. It appears to me, after time, & really putting in the majority of the work creatively, which is 90% of everything, Ed simply regretted that decision. It would appear Mike didn't feel the need to put up any kind of a fight, probably because he knew Ed was right & he would feel the same if he were in Ed's shoes. When there is such a disparity in the workload, in that regard, why would they be paid the same? Again, with multi-millions in the bank, many awards & accolades over the years, a Grammy & induction into the R & R Hall of Fame, Mike came out just fine in the end. I can't imagine he has any complaints right now.
You’re almost right man. It was for 1984 and all releases after while cutting back his share of the previous records also. Cocaine and drink heavily altered the thinking process of the brothers and Dave about everything around that time. Per they’re manager Noel Monk’s book
I don't think Michael Anthony had a problem with it, he has about 100 million reasons not to
Is this thing on"? Snatch!!!!!!!!!!!!
16:21 MEEE
Hey Seth do you know where Edward and David were when this interview happened? I think it would have been even funnier if they were there too
They were both in their hotel rooms. Eddie was really cool about saying hello, while David Lee wasn't available.
What other bands have you met besides the ramones and van halen?
TheRealFantasy I met the original Lynyrd Skynyrd band, seals and crofts, the Charlie Daniels band, Sanford and Townsend and a number of other groups.
Thats pretty cool. Ive never met any bands but i actually do want to meet Van Halen. Sorry for all the questions :) but are you more of a Van Halen Sammy Hagar fan or a Van Halen Dave Roth fan? I won't judge, I'm just wondering.
TheRealFantasy I’m a fan of David Lee. Sammy is good but the original group was the reason they became a success
79-80?? man they r...coked.. n bonged up😀😀😀
Where’s Dave when you need him
Cocaine was and still is, a hell of a drug.🤣

That must have been when they came over to lip-sync on a tv show, since VH didn’t play Spain until the Balance tour. And, unfortunately, that was the one and only time they played Spain. Ever.
Check out at 3:42 where Alex calls Michael an a##hole for taking his beer... and he means it...
Pushing that alcohol.
Hey Seth, what year was this from? I want to say 81 or 82? Thanks, boss!
P G Thanks for the question. I think it was 1983. Funny stuff
Awesome thanks! 83 looks about right for the length of Alex's hair haha
Year?

Al, drunk and in the shadow of Ed? Michael, drunk and nice...
Just saying.
/👍😘🇸🇪
I don't think Al minded one bit of ever being in Ed's shadow, if you can even call it that. He loved his brother, he looked out for him & they were the best of friends. Al is not only incredibly talented himself, but also very intelligent, so he was fully aware of Ed's extra special magic & was more than happy to let him shine. I am heartbroken for Al that he has lost Ed far too young, with so much more music left to make. How do you see one without the other after being together for 65 years? I wish them all peace. 💔🎶
Alex was the chief in Van Halen. Anthony was the jack in the stack.🥕🇩🇰🚬
14:28 - 14:32 OwOwOwO
LMAOOOO
I fell out of my chair. Lol. They were drinking lol😅

Alex jinxed Eddie here, he only won that poll 4 times. On a side note Eddie still hates Joe Satriani because he won that poll 5 times in a row and ever since Eddie has never worked with Joe live or in the studio. Very petty of Eddie...
Joe who?
"Buddy Rich is an excellent drummer but very limited in his style." haha.
coming from alex too LOL
@@OpethTheater3 Alex easily the most underrated drummer of all time~

Almost fell off my seat when Alex said Buddy Rich was limited.
True. He was. He was the world's best jazz drummer but he couldn't do anything else.
+Blastfrom thepast and he HATED cuntry music...excellent taste
@@blastfromthepast8344 Limited maybe, but putting 'best jazz drummer' and limited doesn't make sense. Jazz players are anything but limited.
Hahaha Buddy didn't take offense 🤣

82/3
No Eddie that blows
Like Zeppelin meets the Marx Bros lol
Alex was pretty crude back then.
They have watched Dave doing his thing.. Trying to copycat that, fake, but funny in its own way:-)..
and the "F" word rears its' ugly trumphead once again...so SAD and tired...like the Dongaloid
Alex is drunk and a bit crude not that funny really. He keeps repeating himself .
Are you serious you drunk ding ding,.....Oxymoron dude!----> 17:00 (BTW your music was far from "impeccable" Alex,...& Eddie was darn right sloppy almost every live show. No need to mention Dave's unbelievable talent. lol)
Where the hell is Eddie & Dave
Eddie was up in his room. Talked with him for a few. Dave was MIA.
