The answer is in short, absolutely, without a doubt, 100% yes. We have so much to thank BG1&2 for when it comes to modern RPGs in general. So stoked to say 1-3 are ALL dope as hell.
Agreed! I'm so happy BG3 is good because the legacy of BG1&2 is incredibly strong and has stood the test of time for 20+ years. That legacy now will live on and be as one of the very greatest trilogies ever created in gaming.
Agreed! Legacy? Yep, you bet!! Also, DA Origins Was a Spiritual Successor” to BG 1&2, Devs even said as much. Can’t wait to play BG3 myself (I need an X series Xbox).
Baulders Gate series is great, but the real gem is Planescape Torment. It is fantastic and is some of the best philosophical writing in gaming. I wish we could get a remake of that with the BG3 engine🙏
I've never played a Baldurs Gate game but seeing how BG3 was received I downloaded BG1 to try it out and it's really neat! Excited to dive into the lore and etc. (I've heard you can just jump into 3 buuut I like playing all of the previous games first haha).
As said in this excellent video, he really did a great job of explaining it to new players. BG1 and 2 are not casual games though! lol It's quite an accomplishment to go through these games as a new player compared to most modern games. These are complex, extremely challenging and massively long games, but some of the greatest games ever, and probably the best CRPG series ever made if you like the genre!
Aye, I started bg1 recently and got hooked. With quick loading times it really helps compared to play Pillar of Eternity. It may take awhile to learn the rules of THAC0 and Armor Class but don't give up. It does get better. I found bg1s beginning was rather boring but push through and you'll be rewarded
The reason why Irenicus's VA is iconic, is because they got at the time a fairly known actor in the late great David Warner. He's been in numerous films and TV shows at the time, from Tron to Star Trek VI. Rest in Peace, David.
I know Dragon spear was divisive, but going back to play it recently (for the first time) allowed me to hear David Warner and David Ogden Stires for one last time. At least for me, that alone was worth the price of admission.
Baldur's gate 2 was my favorite game ever until elden ring came. I'm glad to say larian has crafted what seemed impossible to me: a game that can actually claim that throne while building on the legacy of the series. I'm so damn happy with it
Even buying them when they came out, I was IMPRESSED with how many feelies came with BG 1 and 2 as REGULAR editions. Blizzard was about to start doing their "Collector's Editions" with Diablo 2 and Warcraft 3 where if you wanted all the fun extras, you were gonna pay. This is one of the last PC games I remember buying that didn't try to upcharge for the additional documentation. I even had those maps on my wall for years in college. Even the manual was practically an AD&D PHB with all of the information it contained for the game. GOG used to have the original versions of BG 1 and 2 with scans of all the documentation but it looks like it's the Enhanced version only now ☹
Respect for giving Champions of Norrath some love! That's one of my favorite games of all time! I've seen some good graphical increases with mods.. so I'd like to see more of an increase in graphics than the dark alliance re-release..
My Forgotten Realms loving heart is so happy seeing the success of BG3 and the recent D and D movie. So excited to see what Acts 2 and 3 have in store in BG3 because Act 1 was amazing.
I think loot vomit is the point of games like Diablo. Not just the constant flow of dopamine, but that feeling of finding The Sword From The Stories among your shop food.
BG1 and 2 were amazing back in the day. Still worth playing, but keep in mind these games are over 20 years old. The way they made games back then is much different from how they make them now. What is there is absolute gold, just go in there knowing there will be things that feel jank these days. BG3 is a masterpiece, if you love RPGs buy it now.
Bought the switch version the day it was released...finally after 6 attempts(?) I pushed through and fell in love. Just beat BG SoD (1.5) can't wait to start bg2 but I'm currently going through Pillars of Eternity (was on sale).
How come you haven’t made a video for either Champions games? Those were the games you described in this video as one I went over to my best friends house to play as often as I could since this game was near impossible to find used
There were a ton of moments throughout my first playthrough of BG3 that reminded me of Dragon Age Origins. Larian really captured the feel of the old BioWare.
Taking me back to when my friends and I would play Dark Alliance for hours and sit around the 4 player plug for Champions of Norath 1 and import our characters from 1 into 2. Good times. BG3 is so epic.
@@majorgear1021 I assume that the Console version is just as amazing as the PC version. I'll know eventually once my PS5 Deluxe Edition Physical copy arrives in the mail.
Great Video! Wow this was a great briefing of the History, of which I’ve experienced all from the originals! Yep I’m that old. There’s gotta be a lot of Easter eggs, I’m sure. I watched the opening act and those water drops you hear in the background are sound bites from BG 1&2! Yep, that echoed sound of water dropping in a cave is in BG3! I think the door opening too, where the Mind Flayer comes from, I thinks that’s an original sound as well. I also noticed that spells “nearly” look the same as they did in the originals I.E. a cure light wounds is a blue cross, Grease is a Pig, etc …Very cool stuff. Subbed!
If i ever get into hell im pretty sure it would consist of the demons and devils laughing while having me play these fantastic games with a controller.
I absolutely plan to revisit BG1 for the 25th anniversary of me buying the game back in February 1999. Then do the same for BG2 one year and a half later. Meanwhile I'm having a blast with BG3.
Hell yes...when Matty states the following: "BG3 is the sequel to Dragon Age Origins that I always wished for but never got", that comment hit me like gospel 😊.
As someone who grew up with it, I wouldn't pay more than $20 for it nowadays, especially the first one which is very barebones. *Mean this from the perspective of someone who did not grow up with the games.
Dark Alliance 2 was the first one I played on the ps2. Played it co-op with a friend a lot the only problem we had was the game never saved at times so most of the time we would have to play from the beginning all the time
Yes it has finally transpired, you would have had a better time playing the PC versions though. Still it's cool seeing you finally experience the origins of the Bioware formula you love in KoTOR, DA, and ME. Also fun fact for you as a Turtles fan. Irenicus is voiced by David Warner who played the TGRI scientist in the TMNT 2 live action film from 1991.
Baldur's gate 2 is one of those games, i can fire up at any time. Happy or sad and play the entire game all the way through with a big stupid grin on my face the entire time and have tons of fun, no matter how many times i beat it, it's always there for me. It's timeless, utterly timeless.
Beamdog have a very spotty reputation on remasters. Planescape Torment of ps4 has never been fixed sadly. Rumour has it Beamdog wanted to make Baldurs Gate 3. Thank god it was given to Larian.
Would be for me if it were not so difficult. I am barely into it at 10 hours and I find I cannot proceed because a very early mission has enemies that wipe the floor with me. One hit kills. Have not figured out how to proceed after dozen tries. This close to quitting for good. I think I may have bitten off more than I can chew with this game. But I do acknowledge it is amazing in many ways.
I've been watching since before fallout 4 came out and I thought you fell off because UA-cam never suggests your videos but it's good to see you're still making good videos consistently
Something about dice reminds me of Culdcept. Have you ever tried thay series? That game will invite you, and knife you shortly after if you pay attention. Brutal game on the 3DS too.
BG3 is unquestioningly my 2023 GotY but I don't think you should have done comparisons with BG1 or 2 or Dragon Age, rather you should have compared them to Divinity Original Sin 1 and 2. BG3 is a Larian game and you can see past Larian influences heavily in BG3. If you haven't played DOS games, please do so and witness everything Larian learned and brought to BG3. They have quietly been CRPG gods for the past nine years and BG3 is their breakout hit with a big-name brand.
If you manage to get into the RTWP, which is a system almost everybody despises at first glance, BG 1 and 2 are amazing games. I love RTWP as much as turn based so it's easy for me to say. You play games like Witcher 3, Dragon Age, Pathfinder Wrath of the Righteous, then you go back and play BG2, everything these games do had already been done before in BG2, it's crazy. Either BG2 "figured out" and and this specific genre peaked early OR studios have failed to come up with something new. Larian might be the most innovative CRPG studio but their evolution has been on the gameplay mechanics (elemental and physics based combat) but they're still very lackluster when it comes to story, writing and systems. I would say a joint effort between Larian and Obsidian would probably result in the CRPG that would truly breach the boundaries of this genre. Put Josh Sawyer and Leonard Boyarsky, hire Chris Avellone and Tim Cain to tell the story and write the dialog and let Larian cook on the gameplay front. That would be a dream.
I still have the cheats for dark alliance burned into my brain r2 L1 < triangle start 😂 toggles invulnerability and level warp. I sometimes forget my own date of birth but that thing is burnt in for life
The correct way to play these is the enhanced editions on PC, they are 75% off currently on GOG. While you are at it grab Planescape: Torment. The Icewind Dales are skippable imo.
Im always surpriswd by the negativity towards the Enhanced Editions. Its not true that 'alot is lost in translation'. It is a very good high res, some tweaks, implementation of the originals. I dont mind that they added BG2's kits and classes and the ability to pause game while in inventory. New characters are unnecassary but not horrible. I mean after playing the originals ten times I appreciated some new content.
Hey Matty im thinking of getting Baulders gate 3 but what’s holding me back is the gameplay. It’s just not much my thing but I did absolutely love kotor 1&2 as well as dragon age inquisition which is definitely not my cup of tea gameplay wise so im wondering if I liked those because of the story would I like baulders gate 3?
Baldur's Gate 3s story is amazing, and even though the gameplay may be off-putting at first if you're not a fan of turn-based rpgs or are new to it, it becomes very addicting how many ways you can approach a fight. Definitely give it a shot, I highly doubt you'll regret it.
If nothing else, the combat is brutal but rewarding. If you don't like the combat? Put it on easy and go to town with the funny/weird dialogue options. I was the same way, I play it more and more and just enjoy the exploration and role playing, then I started to love the combat.
I love how you always go above and beyond with the complete and boxed copies Matt! Especially from this side of the pond in the UK, as you know a lot of the Pal copies have different art / theme (like you mentioned in one of your FF Vids) So it's refreshing to see the differences in artworks and print etc. Keep up the great work dude, love your videos :)
I played BG1 and 2 recently and it made me realize just how incompetent and untalented devs are these days, there is no passion or vision, we’re just shoveled uninspired shit

I started playing 2 … but there is a glitch early on- i hope its been fixed, i think its like i defeat a guard.. then a 🚪 appears… but the 🚪 is not appearing … So now im not playing it…
Baldurs Gate 3 is way better than Dragon Age Origins, BG3 feels more like they were influenced by Planescape torment and the Black Isle RPGs of old. Absolutely legendary.
It translates very well on PS5 tbh. It's quite good, and if ya have it on PC also you can transfer saves ect between platforms so ya don't lose stuff. It is a great port and very well optimized so far (in act 2)

Why though, Dark Alliance has nothing to do with BG 3, BG 3 is sequel to BG 1 and 2. Dark Alliance was spinoff Diablo clone.
@@Spr1ggan87 it was cheaper at the time. I got BG 1 & 2 now though
I started playing 2 … but there is a glitch early on- i hope its been fixed, i think its like i defeat a guard.. then a 🚪 appears… but the 🚪 is not appearing …
So now im not playing it…
Keep going Matty. You're great at your presentations. 🍻
YOOOOOO I WAS WAITING FOR THIS REVIEW
Baldurs Gate 3 is way better than Dragon Age Origins, BG3 feels more like they were influenced by Planescape torment and the Black Isle RPGs of old. Absolutely legendary.
3 is amazing on PC. idk how itll translate to PS5. dark alliance on the PS2 was fucking epic for its time
It translates very well on PS5 tbh. It's quite good, and if ya have it on PC also you can transfer saves ect between platforms so ya don't lose stuff. It is a great port and very well optimized so far (in act 2)
Biggest problem is how the DnD system translates into real time. A system fully made for turn based. + the Edition its based in is....eh
