I've recently gotten the old Hasegawa 1/48 F-14A and F-14A+ kits dirt cheap from someone who is selling his old stash. Both came with yellowed decals. Otherwise, the rest looks good, especially the detail and condition of the parts. I would say, for a model kit nearly 10 years older my age, that certainly is impressive. I believe the kit used in this video is a newer rebox with extra parts for making a D variant. Even so, I still cannot believe most of this tooling dates back to 1988. Absolutely amazing.

Knocked it out of the ballpark! I especially like the masking on the panel lines technique!! Many people don't realize that when certain panels were removed, they had to be RE-SEALED. Don't know about the Air Force birds, but that is very important for a lot of naval aircraft.

Yes, Fighting 31, my favorite squadron. Well done on the build. I personally like the weathering and the creative process you applied. These cats took quite the beating. I particularly like the way you recreated the variation in paint on the spine panels; gives it that patchy mottled look. I have a long-term project on the back burner where I wanna build all the VF-31 cats and their different markings from the beginning to the last flight. Again, great job!

    • @markr8820
      @markr8820 Рік тому

I don't know about this one, but the Hasegawa F-14 kits I've seen (Hasegawa 1/48 F-14A Tomcat Pacific Fleet Squadrons 07018) were pretty much unbuildable. The intakes were not molded properly to fit without major surgery, cockpit fit issues, front fuselage to rear fit issues, and wheel well issues. I buy them now just to salvage the white metal wheels, decals and vinyl tires. I'm partial to the VF-21 Freelancers as an AOCS classmate of mine was a VF-21 RIO. I've built three of the Tamiya F-14s (two A's for my friend "Doom" and his front seater "Bear" and a D model for my son.) Everything just fits. Best model kits I've put together in any scale of any subject in over 50 years of modeling. Expensive, yes, but worth every penny.

Would you say the Tamiya F-14D kit is better or is the Hasegawa still pretty good?
Too bad I've never seen anyone build a D-model kit as the Seventh F-14 prototype (BuAer 157986) or a VF-1 Wolf Pack F-14D with the classic red paint scheme.
The Seventh F-14 wasn't a true F-14D but it had the GE F110 engines and an aerodynamic test dummy mockup of the twin pod IRST/TCS unit the operational F-14D's used. It still has the prototype twin pod mounted under its nose. The F110 engines were removed when its flight career was over; TF30 exhausts nozzles were installed creating the false impression this Tomcat flew as an A-model! It was always a designated powerplant testbed and called F-14B (original), F-14A+ prototype, later F-14B (GE version). Didn't really fly that much, though. I doubt it flew 1,000 hrs for its entire career as test plane. It was in storage most of that time until it was turned over to the control of the National Museum of Naval Aviation (they handle all retired naval aviation airframes) and gifted it to the USS Intrepid Museum. This F-14 never left New York!
Likewise, while VF-1 Wolf Pack was disestablished in September 1993, at one time they had been scheduled to transition from the F-14A model to the F-14D but that didn't happen after new F-14 production was cancelled in the middle of the defense industry scaledown in the early 1990s.
That seventh prototype and the VF-1 classic red are among the prettiest paint jobs I've seen on Tomcats. The iconic paint F-14 scheme is still the VF-84 Jolly Rogers with the black and yellow striping and skull and crossbones insignia.

Tha tamiya kit is a bettered engineered kit you put glue in the box you shake it and the model is done
The hasegawa is a more challenging kit but offers the option of dropped flaps and slats
Personally I would go with tamiya

      @@PerisModels Thanks!
The more expensive later kit is SLIGHTLY better! Figures! I really haven't heard anything bad about the Tamiya F-14 kits. Supposed to be the best for that plane, period.
At least there's not much difference if you decided to build a D-model as B-model; the only major exterior difference is that B-model only mounts the TCS system under the nose. It's closer to the nose on the B-model than the twin-pod is on the D-model. I noticed recently the dual sensor pod (TCS/IRST) is mounted a bit further from the nose on the F-14D; I'm guessing the twin pod was set up this way to give the IRST a wider field of view without picking up the F-14D airframe in its scans. That's one way to tell it apart from a B-model other than head-on.
I think several of the F-14 kits do give you the option to build B or D-model, and some also give the option of all 3 (A/B/D) but not many kits have both the TF30 and F110 nozzles in the kit. Compared to previous planes (F-4, for example), there are far fewer identifying exterior cues for F-14 models aside from the exhaust nozzles and the chin pod sensors.

just one question!!! where do you get so much patience my friend??? your too good at this!!! I have been looking for pre built fighter jet models in scale size no less than 1/48 scale!!! when it comes to aircraft models I prefer highly detailed 1/32 & 1/24 scale models with functionality such as folding front/rear landing gear, movable flaps & ailerons, opening canopy & folding wings (incase of naval carrier borne fighter) etc!!! I'm not really into those wooden static display models that looks good on a table!!! when your so good with building models might I suggest you try actual prototyping & conceptual modelling of real life size cars & fighter jets!!! big aero corps like HYUNDAI Heavy Industries, Rockwell Collins, Boeing & Embraer are always on the lookout for good modelling & prototyping experts like you!!! it could be something as simple as prototyping a new canopy design for the carrier borne F/A-18E Super Hornet (Block III) multi role interdictor strike fighter or it could be prototyping an entirely new fighter jet altogether!!! aviation firms frequently undertake open prototyping & design competitions worldwide where your concept or design will rival some of the best aeronautic engineers in the world!!! just a thought!!! wish you the best!!!

Evidently Hasegawa corrected this, because your video didn't mention it. You would have definitely noticed. Personally, I think the weathering is perfect! Every Tomcat weathers differently and I have seen F-14's in person that are weathered that bad...and even worse. The last F-14D Tomcat that ever flew is in an air museum in my hometown. Model builders have an artistic lisence when it comes to weathering and I think you did an awesome job!

Chris Huffman That particular aircraft with those markings was from the 1994 cruise. It was a new production D less than 5 years old. I was there. IMO most modelers overdo weathering. Don't get me wrong, overall a great model.
