Hi Paul, I'm a biologist from Spain , I discovered your work during my degree thanks to one of my botanics teachers and I'm very glad of that. Let me make a guess about this chlorine-like smell. I've read something about the iron smell, don't remember where, there said that iron cations are not the actual triggers of the neurological response that "means" the smell we know as "iron scent", but the organic products of a reaction that happens in our nose. It is posible that something similar is happening here, maybe the chlorine scent as we percive it, is ultimately triggered by organic molecules, maybe these Mycena spp. randomly produce a structural analoge. Well, that's my guess hahaha. Damn, I'd really like to do research on this.
My kids love smelling mushrooms we find. We discuss how it smells to each of us (fruity, spicy, no smell, etc.) It's a fun family activity and full of learning.
@@gerardochinchilla2899 In case you're still interested in an answer a whole year later: Poisonous mushrooms are safe to be smelled. In fact, most deadly poisonous mushrooms are safe to be chewed for a taste-test as long as you spit it out afterwards.
I love those short and fun Videos. Those, JRE and some speaches of you gave me a deep facination for fungi. Now I grow some on my own and I am hoping to find some way to specialice on fungi in buildings. (I am studying construction engineering) Thank you for that :).
I have a swimming pool, and I read somewhere that when my pool reeks of chlorine that what i am actually smelling is “Chlor-amines”, that is the free chlorine is binding with junk in the water and so the stench of chlorine from a swimming pool is actually chlorine that has been used up. Therefore, when a swimming pool reeks of chlorine, it actually means that the owner needs to add more chlorine. Fresh chlorine in a pool is relatively odorless. Only when it has bonded with junk does it start giving off a strong noxious odor.
Most of the Mycena I found here in Oregon this past year seemed to be Mycena galopus, atleast thats what I seemed to have found on my video. I will make sure to check smell next year and for future identification videos! Thank you paul.
Hi, I've just found this article: Peters, S. and Spiteller, P. (2006) "Chloro-and Bromophenols from cultures of Mycena alcalina" J. Nat. Prod. 69, 1809-1812. Where it is described the isolation of some chlorophenols from a mycelial culture of Mycena alcalina. These molecules, if volatile, might be the causal agents in the bleach-scent phenomenon.
I was at the Ace Hardware Store about 5 hours ago selling one of the ACE Guys on Paul Stamets. I take 4 different Stamet preparations of Mycelium for their benefit to the Microbiome. They work like Magic, only they are Big Medicine.
The reason for the smell must be the same why benzaldehyde and hydrogen cyanide smells the same. Our receptors supposed to "feel" molecular resonances, and it is possible for totally different things to resonate on the same frequency. (Sorry, I couldn't find the source for this, my Google-fu let me down.)
Hehe, sure, I guess? They smell of chlorine, ie, they taste of chlorine. They are very small and would cook to a mush. A chlorine smelling and tasting mush. Not appetizing nor worth the effort to pick enough to even do anything with em, but they won't kill you. But there are about a dozen other mushrooms looking just like these. Im not sure about the edibility of all of those, yet.
Paul, i ate deadly mushrooms, and gone to the doctor, and i told him i took a risk, and ate mushrooms which i suspect to be deadly, i ate them because i did think it were psychedelic ones, and Told my doctor! Guess his answer, ahh that's not a problem he said haha

Just keep in mind that smelling enough pores of a ripe giant puffball can be deadly.
How do you know these found mushrooms are not poised?

Chlorine mimicking scent... Fascinating.
can't wait to see Paul on JRE again in the near future
Make that happen again pls
Ooooo When could that be?!
JRE is an idiot. Paul Stamets has his own channel.

So much knowledge but such short videos.
Please make longer videos. I could watch and listen to this stuff for hours
Watching your brain work is like watching a freaggin rock concert. Absolutely impressed by your knowledge (mastery) of this science.
Thank you Mr. Stamets, wish I could help.
Please update on question if answered .
Awesome. Love the little laugh at the end! way to go paul.
There you go , Paul just dropped your doctorate degree project. Awesome taking up to the edge of what is known

What analysis did you guys use to test for chlorine? If your test was specific to free chlorine then maybe it gave you a false negative

You were talking to Mario maybe?
Could it have an abundant amount of hypochlorous acid?
Perhaps look into Pyrus calleryana
I found some of these today I can’t find if they are edible or not
Do you happen to know?
What’s your books called
Peace and love to you and to all.🙏🏼✌️❤️
But are they edible
What about omitting bromine? It has a similar chlorine smell
Why do some mushrooms smell like seafood ?

Very nice👌🏾
Do mushrooms exude terpenes?
Yes, absolutely, some fungus (some insects too) contain sterols and terpenes, It's not just your weed! 😜💜 terpenes be in everything with a scent.
Weed you say? 🤔😗💨
Thank you
