The Return of the Shadow, Session 1 - In Search of a Sequel

Dr. Corey Olsen begins a new Mythgard Academy class, this time on the sixth volume of The History of Middle-earth, The Return of the Shadow. Dr. Olsen starts the journey with an examination of the Forward and Chapter 1.
Having written The Hobbit, Tolkien returned to what he saw as his more important writing, The Quenta Silmarillion. But his publisher wanted to capitalize on the success of The Hobbit by bringing out a sequel. With the start of 'the new Hobbit', the worlds of the Silmarillion and Bilbo Baggins began to converge. From the first sentence The Lord of the Rings was for Tolkien a voyage of discovery. After general discussion of this point, Professor Olsen moved on to examine the development of 'A Long-expected Party.'
