I've read somewhere that the "I love you" isn't just for the romantics, but because it has more significance- like it held so much more emotions- than Taki's name, and that's why it worked. Because if he just wrote his name, Mitsuha's memories of it would be taken by the moon too. It would mean literally nothing to her, something like that. Kinda like what happened to Taki.

It's because in Japanese folklore messages of love are protected by the moon. If he wrote his name it would have been erased. Much of this movie is rooted in returning to Japanese tradition. I literally went to all the places that was shown in the movie in Tokyo. I followed one of the guides on the internet and managed to go to the final scene of the staircase. Fun fact, at the top of the staircase, there's a small shrine and you can see all the tributes to this movie by fans around the world. If you guys go back to Japan again, I highly recommend doing the Your Name tourist guide. You'll be going off the beaten path on some areas but it's worth it. Taki wrote "I Love You" on Mitsuha's hand instead of his name because Taki knew that if he did wrote his name then Mitsuha will only forget it just like how he immediately forgot her name in the in the mountains and possibly erased just like the notes Mitsuha left in His phone. There's a saying "Love is too Powerful of a Force to be Bound by Memory". I'm pretty sure Sheera's right about this happening every 1200 years, that's why there's multiple craters near the village (the one where they leave the offering, the lake) and there's that cave painting of the comet Taki saw when he fell after drinking the sake.

Mitsuha actually waited 8 years technically since the comet hit 3 years prior to Taki's timeline and the ending was 5 years from that time. Imagine waiting that long, and something is just bugging you from your subconscious thinking that you were missing a piece of yourself and didnt know what it was. And at that moment when they locked eyes on the train, the feelings finally clicked. At the end, they almost missed each other because they weren't sure if it was one another. They lost their memories of each other after all, thats why they didnt recognize each other
I think Mitsuha's reactions during that final staircase scene was done beautifully. Her face was filled with hope when she saw someone else on the bottom of the stairs, almost drawn by some kind of unseen force. Then uncertainty when she realizes it may just be someone random and not who she was looking for. As they pass each other, her uncertainty turned to sadness, since Taki didnt respond, thinking that he wasnt the one. But when Taki called out, her face was filled with hope again. And then when he finally asked if they've met, she started crying out of happiness because she knew she finally found him. Jesus this movie ending was happy but with a slight touch of sadness that they couldnt remember all the times they had before and that they were literally unconsciously waiting for one another all this time.
Also the editor and roshi savage for that last comet comment LOL. I can imagine Madara Uchiha just popping out of nowhere and be like "Yall survived the first one. But how about the second one eh?"
    And then credits roll...

When Taki entered the underworld in order to change time, the condition was that they had to leave the most important/precious thing for them behind: the names and memories of the one they loved. That is why Taki wrote "I love you", because according to japanese folklore love is protected by the moon goddess (pay attention that there is a full moon when they meet each other at kataware-doki)...after they forget about each other the love message and the feelings were protected..inside their hearts they always knew that somewhere there was someone that loved them..the other half of their souls. And when they saw each other again their hearts told them that they finally found the person they were looking for all those years. It is said that a red thread connect our destinies. Btw Mitsuha cut her hair after going to Tokyo, because she thought that Taki had rejected her, her heart was broken, but she didnt know that they were switching bodies through space and time.

One of the things the show assumes is that most people are familiar with dreams... Ever tried to remember a dream? It's fleeting, and the memory usually fades within 10-20 mins. It's pretty hard to do, which is why I believe they aren't initially so aware of the body swap... Like a dream, it fades fast unless you really try to remember.

I see a lot of people saying that even if they wrote their names they would forget it. I think everybody is forgetting that the messages on Taki's phone disappeared. Time is correcting itself after the swapping ends which is why they're forgetting in the first place. Their names would have disappeared but something as vague as "I Love You" isn't a danger to the timeline so it remained.

Love this movie more than silent voice (I do think silent voice is better) but there are way too many plot holes, unanswered questions, and it just feels more like a final draft overall (But still good). I think the creator/director even says he wanted more time to make the movie (Unsure about this one). But some of the plot holes can be answered I at least remember one:
When taki wrote "I love you" instead of his name it was actually more than just a romantic moment. Remember that by the time they got out of the "edge between the worlds" (or something like that) they immediately started to forget each other's names. And from what we saw earlier with takis phone erasing everything about mitsuha, writing his name on her hand would have gotten it erased. I'm pretty sure this situation is also based on Japanese folklore or stories. But I'm pretty sure someone else can say it.
Edit: I would also love to recommend "I want to eat your pancreas" (Just like everyone else) and "The anthem of the heart" (A personal recommendation that is under the rocks). I also noticed your channel didn't have "Classroom of the elite" but Idk if its on Patreon or not.
