  • Established in 1953 and named after its founder, Ascot Chang is one of Hong Kong’s most famous shirt and suit makers. Besides its exceptional workmanship and quality, the business has also come to be known for a speciality - its Shanghai style that fuses Russian, British, Japanese and Chinese tailoring techniques.
    “My grandfather originally was from Shanghai. When he got to Hong Kong, he basically was living in a relative’s balcony area and started to go door-to-door measuring people for shirts. Back then, there were a lot of Shanghainese businessmen, who were accustomed to getting bespoke shirts made to certain standards that they wouldn’t find in Hong Kong,” said Justin Chang, who represents the third generation of the family-run business as deputy managing director. I spent my earliest days in Hong Kong. My parents were college professors in Clear Water Bay. Now, I live in Chicago, but Hong Kong is my home . One day I will have a bespoke tailor such this one in Hong Kong make a dark blue suit for me.

    This is what tailoring is about, hard work gaining knowledge developing skills and character. This is real. Love it.

    I like this, family owned traditions handed down from generation to generation. I respect that. If I were a wealthy man, I would patronize.

      You don't have to be wealthy to owned a piece of custom tailored suits. Although it costs more to manufacture, but it fits well to your body and you will stand out from the crowd of people. Also, it lasts a long time. I'm still wearing tailored shirts from High School. What I like the most about tailored shirt is attention to details and old-school craftsmanship.

      @@anthonychan3483 It depends where you live. In Greece for example. A bespoke garment costs at around 1000-1500. In America a bespoke garment starts from 3000. In England it starts from around 4000-5000. So it is expensive. Most people would rather buy six suits that cost, let's say 200 euros. Rather than 1 of 1200. People now prefer quantity over quality

    absolutely impressed. the big southeast asian metro has quality merchandise vendors and craftsmen since british days. a pleasure to be in the neon lighted city. notable that south china morning post/scmp endorses the iconic bespoke tailor of HK.

    Imagine going in there to get a shirt, then coming back 14 years and 11 months later and asking for some more shirts and they go into some room and pull out a folder with your measurements!!

    Another fun fact, the earliest suit tailors in Hongkong were Shanghainese
    During the peak of the Hongkong economy in the 80s, the best and more famous tailors were Shanghainese

      As long as your not running around naked ( nothing wrong with that) and it fits good then who cares where your cloths come from.... it’s you and your personality character that makes it!

      Slightly more expensive than mass-produced. A tailored shirt runs approximately US$100; suits costs roughly US$1200 to make. You select the fabric (imported versus domestic); style / fabrication; body measurement. Takes about a week to make.

      @@anthonychan3483 I see. So actually not that expensive. Are u referring to this brand?

    • @anthonychan3483
      @anthonychan3483 5 років тому

      @@dryolddesert Not really; tailored fitting normally costs around that much. Anywhere other than in the United States, tailored fitting is quite common. We grew up having custom tailored fitting; from normal casual wear to formal wear. Even our school's uniforms (from K-12) were tailored fitted. We attended private school; not sure about public school though.

    Doesn't look like the business is going onto good hands. He's not even a master tailor. A suit maker brand is no fashion brand. Without a master tailor at the top putting his touches into everything. Customers will go elsewhere. And the brand will fall

      He is basing his skill on the legacy from his father. That’s what the customer is trusting on, regardless of his background. Discerning customers in Hong Kong factor this in their purchase, not just aesthetic and taste like you westerners.
