I think part of the reason it is so powerful even to those outside Wales is because every Welsh person knows the timing for the crescendo perfectly so when a choir or crowd sing it, it goes from quiet and reverent to sounding like a battle cry.

I am of mixed ancestry and my mother's family are mostly Welsh. I have felt a connection to my Welsh blood all my life and although I have never lived in Wales, my Gran did and my parents retired there. Moving around England all my life, Talgarth and Bronllys were the closest thing I had to a home.
Some years ago, my mother, sister and I attended a concert by a male voice choir on St David's Day in Didcot, Oxfordshire. Lots of old Welsh songs were sung and when they got to the national anthem, they invited the audience to sing it in English or in Welsh. I knew it in Welsh and as we started to sing, the hall filled with proud Welsh folk, singing loudly in their own language. It was incredible.

The Welsh National Anthem was created by a father who was a poet and his son who was a composer, and it was created in 1856 to be performed at an Eisteddfod. An Eisteddfod is a huge festival/competition in Wales that typically happens every year, and it goes to a different town or city each year. It's a competition of Welsh culture such as poets, musicians, dancers, writers, artists, etc. The Eisteddfod started in 1176 by a Lord Rhys in his castle in Cardigan, inviting poets and musicians all across Wales to perform and be awarded in their own categories with a chair at the Lords table, although it gained huge popularity in the 19th century, and become an official National competition across Wales in 1880, and since then there has been an Eisteddfod in Wales every year except for 1914, 1940 & 2020.
There are also Eisteddfod's held twice a year in Patagonia, Argentina as there was a huge migration of Welsh people who moved there in the late 1800's due to the belief that the Welsh language and culture was being threatened in Wales due to the English. Although the Eisteddfod's in Patagonia are influenced by the many different cultures and languages that are used daily in Patagonia and Argentina such as Welsh, English & Spanish.

Great that you played a gutsy version of God Save The Queen with two verses sung. One of the problems with the national anthem is it's often played too slow, one verse and mumbled, when it should be sung with gusto. That said, it is the Queen's preference that only one verse is sung in her presence, after all, she has to hear a lot more than the rest of us. :-)

Northern Ireland doesn't have a national anthem, but the closest thing to it is Londonderry Air, which they play at the Commonwealth games to represent them.

The Welsh actually invented the concept of singing national anthems at the start of sporting events in 1905. The visiting New Zealand All Blacks rugby team, made up of all Maori NZ natives who had been introduced to the sport were touring the home nations of England, Scotland, Ireland and Wales. However at the start of each match they performed the previously unheard of Haka wardance (still done today). This helped contribute to an aura of invincibility about them (they were already pretty amazing). The 1st 3 matches against England, Scotland and Ireland they won deciesively. Observing this the Welsh team organised to respond to the haka by having all 40,000 welsh fans in the stadium sing their anthem defiantly. They went on to beat the All Blacks and anthems at sport became a new thing!

Just one small comment, the anthem of Ireland is the Republic of Ireland which is not in the UK. The UK is England, Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland.

I enjoyed your reaction but though I love the Monarchy the general public, generally, prefer either of these 2 Anthems:
1/ "Land of Hope and Glory - Last Night of the Proms 2009" will demonstrate the power of that one if you put it in UA-cam search
    2/ Jerusalem

Personality I always preferred Rule Britannia to God save the Queen. Land of hope and glory is good but quite short. Jerusalem is quite England specific so works best as an English sub anthem

As an Englishman I would rank the UK anthems : Wales, Scotland, England. Even though the whole island of Ireland isn’t all in the, Ireland’s Call is bloody awesome. I love my country but want to see the monarchy abolished so I don’t sing God Save The Queen.

OK You asked for a bit more information so here goes.
The four parts that make up the United Kingdom are England, Northern Ireland, Scotland and Wales; of those, only one (Wales) has it's own National Anthem, the rest have a choice of a couple of patriotic songs that are used at sporting events.
Details of the national songs & anthems:
ENGLAND they use either "Jerusalem" or "Land of Hope and Glory" at the Commonwealth Games, otherwise its God Save the Queen.
NORTHERN IRELAND use the Londonderry Air ("Danny Boy") at the Commonwealth Games. The anthem you played is only for southern Ireland and was adopted from a rebel song of 1910. When a team is playing from the whole of Ireland (cricket, rugby) they use "Ireland's Call".
SCOTLAND mostly use Flower of Scotland, which was written by the Corries in the 1960s. Its all about beating the English at the Battle of Bannockburn in the 14th century. They used to use "Scotland the Brave".
WALES has a proper national anthem, Hen Wlad Fy Nhadau, which dates from 1856 and is all about the land, the nation and our bardic heritage.
The practice of singing a national anthem was begun in Wales in 1905, when "Hen Wlad Fy Nhadau" was sung as a response to the Haka (ceremonial war chant) performed by the visiting All Blacks (New Zealand) rugby team.
"God Save the Queen/King" is very old: a version can be found in the time of James I/VI in the early 17th century. The current version dates from 1745 (words), the tune is possibly by Thomas Arne.
