I remember playing the Spies vs. Mercs mode on Double Agent. Even when you were playing as the merc, it honestly felt like a horror game with all the lights going out, vague scuffling in the air ducts above you, trying to desperately find this one guy who could sneak up on you and snap your neck. Best multiplayer experience ever, my mind cannot be changed.

Used to link up 4 xboxs and 4 TVs to play this as a kid. Legendary experiences I will never forget. We played 16 player Halo as well, but the 4 most hardcore of us would play this afterwards. So hard to make a game happen, but so good when it finally manifested.
The best part about this mode is it's tied to the single player campaign, particularly in Pandora Tomorrow where it first appears. The Spies are hunting down the pox boxes that Sadono distributed, and ARGUS (the Mercs) doesn't ask questions so it makes sense they guard the things. (It's confirmed in a cutscene near the end of the game at 9:42 in this vid here: ua-cam.com/video/TkwCjCJpFm4/v-deo.htmlsi=4dVNNuDCvBlhynwP. ) In future games the connection is not so evident but it's easy to speculate there is (save for Double Agent, it's a whole different time from what I saw.) It's one of those things that really make you appreciate how it all influences one another. And therefore makes it much more frustrating when people do it again in more recent games with arguably brainless ramifications. (Looking at you and your Esports *"training sessions,"* Siege.)
yeah it's a great detail. hell it's one of the few that found its way into Conviction funnily enough, since the Deniable Ops do get a moment that ties into one of the levels.
this shit was so peak back on the 360, i remember managing to do the hardest difficulty campaign with a random when we both didnt have mics purely through sheer determination and miming to eachother. new gamers missed out on the old "becoming best friends with a guy even though neither of you have ever spoken a single word"

Literally didn’t have internet to play multiplayer as a kid but I used to load in and just explore solo. Loved replaying the Splinter Cell series as an adult.
Super grateful to have had the opportunity to play this game during its peak. It was so much fun and at times a horror game if the spies were good enough. The in game voice chat made it hilarious and terrifying at times as well
Great video. Love the Badger Style editing and "animations". Honestly, if you want to you could omit actual smooth animations completely and do what Badger did earlier on, just stop-motion stuff. Very entertaining.
I remember playing this every night- Glitching through the aquarium tunnel, bugging the grapple and running around the map with a merc inside of you, there were so many fun bugs to abuse.

It's great you talked about this, there are so many older age games that I fell in love with some time ago that were great to play with friends. Halo 3 is everybody's first pick, and yeah, custom games like that are incredibly enjoyable, but I often think about Splinter Cell and Metal Gear Online.. I played so much of both and I just miss when multiplayer games were solely for the game with so much attention to detail rather than "How do we peddle new skins, DLCs, and battlepasses?"
When watching this video I remembered that I played a multiplayer game a long time ago when I was a kid (with bots as I didn't have internet back then), and to this day I never have seen anything quite like it. It's a modern military shooter, mostly your usual deathmatch mode. But the catch is that there are two teams playing DM against each other, and there' ALSO A THIRD team consisting of one to three players whose objective is to steal some vital intel usually located somewhere in the middle of the map, dangerously near the battlezone. If I remember correctly, should that third team exfil with that intel they win, and both other teams lose. Also there was some great multiplayer mode fun to be had in AC Brotherhood.
Erm, Sin & Punishment: Star Successor for the Wii has a better multiplayer mode (it blows) This is Wubbzymon from the Act Clan, and I'm glad seeing you take off now Paragon, and with a video of Splinter Cell no less.
I remember getting the multiplayer running with a few friends. Took us some time to understand how to play, then slowly getting better and more efficient as we played. Fun times.

Splinter Cell was my childhood game. I was there from the first all the way to Conviction (Black List can KMA. How dare they take away Michael Ironside...). Seeing this brings back memories of what us OGs have lost over the years.... I wish people still played this on console
One of my earliest online gaming memories was Double agent. I remember I had snuck into what must have been a spawn point for the other team. I was exploring under a catwalk when all of a sudden there must have been 3-4 of them above me. I must not have been very stealthy because they all started looking for me! I could see the rays of light from their flashlights shining through the grating in the catwalk. I remember being both terrified and exhilarated as I hid in a shadow right below their feet and watched the flashlights pan back-and-forth. Eventually they were satisfied and left. I had successfully evaded detection from real human beings! It was an admittedly small moment, but it had stuck with me all the way into my 30’s 😌
Dude on this one sandbox game me and some friends basically made our own gamemode which was basically this. I gotta play this now and tell my friends about it
I played splinter cell blacklist multiplayer and it was the best version of spies v mercs in my opinion. I just loved being able to literally have mercs walk around me as I stay completely still to avoid being shot by a adrenaline Induced rageing merc
Love this and Intruder as well. But this one is above and it's almost 20 years old! Playing with friends using the in game voice chat so you can spy enemy voice coms when they are marked is gold! Pretty sure it will grow up this year thanks to that 3.4 version!
Reminds me of the long ago gary's mod game: "the hunt" One monster vs a team of mercenaries. The monster is invisible and can jump around, while the the mercs have to hunt it down and complete objectives.

Asymmetrical multiplayer games need to make a come back. They were great, creative and fun. I don't see anyone ever really complaining or saying it was a frustrating experience, so I think they just died off due to other styles of games becoming more popular. Regardless I enjoyed the handful that were still on life support in the 360 days. Also I wish I had friends who weren't of the opinion none hyper competitive games are dumb and a waste of time. Makes me sad I don't have anyone to play this with.
I enjoyed original SvM, but I think Double Agent's mobility for the spies made it peak for me. Chaos Theory vibe/maps with Double Agent movement would be the dream.
I only found this game mode once Double Agent came out - played loads of that on my PS3 (even if the singleplayer campaign was hot garbage). I remember watching some Let's Plays of the Blacklist verion, and it seemed stupid fun too. Not sure if it's still possible to play either of those - so very glad to hear that it's still possible to play a version of it.
My favorite game ever. Played the coop mode with my best friends at school back in the day. Wish there was a remaster of this game with the same dynamic but better graphics and a bit more realism.

I played a coupe hundred hours of this back in the day, it was so much damn fun! Too bad no games today do anything quite like this. Would love to play this with a modern engine that allows for greater fluidity of motion for the spies and modern lighting techniques.

Spies VS Mercs is one of most unique multiplayer modes, unlike the modern multiplayer industry, unfortunate it doesn't have much players nowadays.
The only way I have fun with games is hitting the Time Machine.

Team sneak game mode was similar, asymmetrical, one sneaky team, one defensive more heavily armed team.

I remember watching some Let's Plays of the Blacklist verion, and it seemed stupid fun too. Not sure if it's still possible to play either of those - so very glad to hear that it's still possible to play a version of it.
I was playing Spies vs Mercs on double agent last week on pc. Same community modded it to work too.
Still one of the most intense multiplayer experiences to date. This brought back so many memories.
My favorite game ever. Played the coop mode with my best friends at school back in the day. Wish there was a remaster of this game with the same dynamic but better graphics and a bit more realism.

Tbh splinter cell needs a remake or remaster so bad cuz i miss doing spys vs mercs on double agent or at least port all the games to the consoles like bundle pack kinda like they did for doom or devil may cry cuz i really enjoyed the stories of spinter cell 🙏

Double Agents Spies vs Mercs holds a special place in my heart as the FIRST online game I ever played.
I'd love if an indie developer made a spiritual successor to this. It'd be such a good game for friends.

I played a coupe hundred hours of this back in the day, it was so much damn fun! Too bad no games today do anything quite like this. Would love to play this with a modern engine that allows for greater fluidity of motion for the spies and modern lighting techniques.
played this online for hundreds of hours me and a buddy where top 5 on one map for like two weeks :) in the first months of the game ... this is PERFECT online gameplay !

My friends and I play Chaos Theory SvM occasionally during our LAN parties. It was nice being able to play the Blacklist one online before Ubi nuked the servers.
