I followed your video to teardown my Brute 650. I just finished. Thanks for your detail and saying what size sockets are needed. Mine is like this one the front rod bearing is bad. I'm taking the crank tomorrow to have it reworked. I will be following your reassembly video too once I get all the parts.
Excellent video , I have a customer's 2014 Brute force 650 (this model seems to be Canada only, no 2014 's any where else ) with spun rod bearings , the engine is in good shape otherwise , the 17yr old owner really abused this thing and is likely the cause but I need to be sure it is not the bushing/oil pressure. the manual gives ranges for the bushing and journal but no acceptable tolerance . I measured them and the clearance is about .0035 . the manual says journal service limit is 1.652 and the bushing service limit is1.6567 so I assume the clearance here would be .0047 if I am reading this right ???? your thoughts would be appreciated. I swamp my bike. I'm looking into splitting the cases to clean it all out. Im guessing flushing it won't be as good. How deep do I gotta tear things down to clean it out so sand don't tear things up?
You mentioned the Phillips bolts getting the heads pulled through the plates holding the crank bearing. I pressed mine out and it pulled the them through.. threads are good in the case just messed up the head when they pulled through what did you do to fix ... if you simply replaced bolts where did you find them?
This is a great video, lots of detail and I really like that you explain everything very well. I just bought an 06 Brute 650 not running. Guy showed me a video of it running it smokes and a knocking noise. I have low compression on front head 28 psi and 90 psi on rear. I think it was sunk in water just guessing. I know it needs rings and once I pull heads I will check the crank bearings like you showed and see what else it needs. Your video was great at showing how to tear it all down. First question is what symptom would a spun crank bearing be? Second question when I picked this atv up it rolled easy put it on trailer set parking brake and the guy put it in gear and I strapped it down. Strap came loose and the atv moved on trailer a little. Now I put it in neutral and release park brake and can hardly move it. I jacked up rear end and its real hard to turn rear wheels. Have you seen this before and could it be the rear wet brake stuck or something in transmission? I know when I remove the engine I can try and turn the rear wheels and I will know then if it is problem in rearend or transmission at that time.
The spun bearings often times show different symptoms. I will just list all the the ones I can think of. Bottom end knock, loss of power, starter dragging/ hard to turn over. I would about bet your front rod bearing is spun. As far as your brakes go. I would guess your cable was sized for the rear brake. See if you can get the arm where the cables attach to the front of the diff to move. It should release the brake. I doubt it has transmission trouble.
@@FourwheelerDoctor Thank you for the information. Thanks for the tip on getting the brakes released. I'm eager to tear into the motor after watching your video. I will be subscribing.
@@FourwheelerDoctor I finally got the motor pulled and pulled the heads. You were right on it with what you thought was wrong with mine. I found the front rod bearing is bad that thing moves all over the place. Also the cable for hand brake rear was froze up. I'm going to be following the rest of your video to open the case later this week. Thanks again for your great videos.
If I have a knock in the transmission and I split the case just for transmission repair should I have to adjust the valves due to new seals or will it be fine. And when I do reassemble is there a special procedure to get it back to running like lining it in top dead center on the front piston or does any of that matter. Trying to do it myself and learn along the way
You may have to adjust the valves. I have a reassembly video I will have uploaded this weekend that tells the top dead center steps. There is a pattern you have to follow.
I have a 2014 brute force 750 gotta get a clutch and flywheel puller then i get things on the ball. But until then I'm just making sure I don't dive in to deep and get lost.
Thanks for the video! About to pick one up in a few hours, already know engine is “bad”, but no actual specifics so not sure what I am about to get into, lol. This video helps a lot. Sounds like spun bearings are typical for this specific engine design if people are wheeling a lot?
Great video man. Can I remove my tensioners on the outside of the engine (rear tensioner) and reinstall them without it jumping time? I’m hearing a light chain slide coming from right where the tensioner is.
I have an 08 650 that has low compression after getting water in the air intake do you have any idea what are some possible problem parts? Also where did you source your parts? First time doing anything this deep so any information would be helpful!
Sometimes it can make a ring stick on the piston.Try and put some oil in the spark plug hole and see if will make the compression get up enough to allow it to crank.
Hey man my 07 prairie 700 which is basically the same motor blew the front head gasket and while I have the motor pulled I’d figured I’d replace all the chains because they where bound to go out anyway. Do I need new headbolts when I reinstall the heads?
Four wheeler Doctor that’s awesome I bought 2 of these for $1300 and I think one has a blown head gasket the other runs but this video would help a lot in case the one has to be tore down further or if it needs new chains
Instead of buying a new crank I have my cranks machined where they cut down the rod journal and use aftermarket oversized bearings to get the play out of the rod. I have a guy at a machine shop that does it for me.
@@FourwheelerDoctor thanks for getting back to me,.. I do not mean to ask stupid questions,.. so basically you have two options then,,.new crank or get it done, you can’t just put new rods and bearings? On the crank? Cheers
@@Dfarnham100yes those are your two options. normally the crank is damaged by the bearing spinning and you either have to have it machined or replaced. hey just a question so i just bought a bruteforce and behind the dip stick oil cover their is whole in the side of the case do you know what can cause that to happen. just wondering
There is a gear behind the dipstick cover that drives the output shaft. There is a chance a piece of metal from something else broken inside the engine getting under that gear and popping a hole in the case. It's not hard to pull off the dipstick cover to inspect.
@@FourwheelerDoctor ok thanks i was just wanting some input. im about too. i went ahead and ordered a new crankcase since their is a whole on the side of it. thanks again!

The pickup beside the stator is the sensor that controls when it fires. I didn't get a picture of it in my video but it is just out of the top of the frame at 9:43. There are really only three places to get water in the oil on these bikes. it could be your mechanical seal and oil seal on the water pump shaft. Both of those would have to be bad for water to get in the oil. Not real likely that's the problem. The other two places to get it in there is either the head gasket. Or your head could have a crack in it. I've never had a problem with head gaskets leaking on these but I have replaced a few cracked heads from time to time
